The Viewing Machine, Alice Minsoo Chun Mar 2002

The Viewing Machine, Alice Minsoo Chun

Proceedings of the 18th National Conference on the Beginning Design Student

Technology in architecture. rhetoric of construction. often expresses an erotic search for knowledge. As Marco Frascari explains, "Technology is the fertile factor for the architectural production of elegant meanings, it deals with both the construction- the logos of techne (elegant art)- and the construing- the techne of logos (rhetoric)." 1 In this case technology translates from figures of thought into figures of site, and figures of making. It may be construed as a condition that attempts to answer the question: How does one begin? The curriculum developed for the Undergraduate Architecture Program at the University of Pennsylvania provides a place …

Musical Beginnings: Musings On Teaching With Music In The Fundamental Design Studio, John Maze Mar 2002

Musical Beginnings: Musings On Teaching With Music In The Fundamental Design Studio, John Maze

Proceedings of the 18th National Conference on the Beginning Design Student

The beginning design student, like any other. is confronted with a world riddled with a multiplicity of physical, sociological, and psychological conditions that can thwart efforts to objectify contextual design determinants. Given the complexity of the twenty-first century environment, students should perhaps be given a non-building t ype of environment to hone their analytic abilities prior to taking on such a proliferation of perceptual stimuli. Physical environments such as urban settings that typically make up the sites for early design problems are simply too complex for students to first learn to perceive their surroundings in an objective manner. Too many …

Gesamtkunstwerk: Architecture/Interior Architecture - Elemental Integration As A Pedagogical Foundation For Design Education, Rebecca O'Neal Dagg Mar 2002

Gesamtkunstwerk: Architecture/Interior Architecture - Elemental Integration As A Pedagogical Foundation For Design Education, Rebecca O'Neal Dagg

Proceedings of the 18th National Conference on the Beginning Design Student

The Architecture/ Interior Architecture [ARIA] duel degree program at Auburn University's School of Architecture is a unique design education model that offers a holistic approach to the relationship between interior and exterior space early in the design student's education. This program's mission at a fundamental pedagogical basis incorporates Architecture and Interior Architecture within Auburn's architecture curriculum model, allowing the development of the concept of "total design" into the design mentality of students. Gesamtkunstwerk, the German word most commonly interpreted in reference to Modem Architecture historical discourse to mean "total work of art:' offers inspiration to the ARIA program model via …

Setting A Baby Into The Grass: A Biological Model Of Interactions Between Concrete And Abstract Learning Experiences, Stephen Temple Mar 2002

Setting A Baby Into The Grass: A Biological Model Of Interactions Between Concrete And Abstract Learning Experiences, Stephen Temple

Proceedings of the 18th National Conference on the Beginning Design Student

Give a baby its first experience in a grassy lawn and it will roll and frolic in the grass, reveling in its presence against its skin, in its hand. Its fingers will fondle and finesse the blades, press into the mass of roots, break and tear. Learning takes place literally at the fingertips, in the direct experience of the feel of each blade. New connections to the physicality of the world are formed and, in so doing, corresponding new representations of that world are created. Each new contact with the world becomes then an experiment, a test of these representations …

Rhetorical Investigations: A General Theory Of Design And Architectural Education, Simon Tomkinson Mar 2002

Rhetorical Investigations: A General Theory Of Design And Architectural Education, Simon Tomkinson

Proceedings of the 18th National Conference on the Beginning Design Student

This paper focuses on the common difficulties in architectural education - its role, and its motives. The construction industry has consistently needed more qualified project managers, more technicians, and better business practices. Yet, a primary tenet of architectural education is that the industry is more qualified to train the student in the intricacies of practice. The education about practice is limited primarily due to the emphasis on design education. What is it that we, as educators, teach in design education?

Intelligent Shape Sorting, Esther Dudley Mar 2002

Intelligent Shape Sorting, Esther Dudley

Proceedings of the 18th National Conference on the Beginning Design Student

It is a familiar scene. Each September brings its new crop of would-be graphic designers, diverse in their experiences and ambitions, brought together in the lecture theatre by an appointment on their induction calendar; indicating an introduction to design research. It is my task to explain the pattern that this study will take in the opening modules. In this first year of study design research will take place on Wednesdays, regardless of studio projects It will constitute a certain number of lectures and tutorials, concluding with a specified brief which represents the first phase of assessment. As the routine unfolds …

Turkish Student Teachers' Early Experiences In Schools: Critical Incidents, Reflection, And A New Teacher Education Program, Dannelle D. Stevens, Serap Sarigul, Hulya Deger Jan 2002

Turkish Student Teachers' Early Experiences In Schools: Critical Incidents, Reflection, And A New Teacher Education Program, Dannelle D. Stevens, Serap Sarigul, Hulya Deger

Education Faculty Publications and Presentations

In Turkey there is an old saying about how parents feel about the role of schools: "The bones are mine, but the flesh is yours." Turkish parents want schools to not only educate but to mold and shape the values of their children in ways that the educators think appropriate. Ever since Turkey became a republic in 1923 under the leadership of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, education has been highly valued. In 1924, Ataturk invited John Dewey to assess and report on the situation in Turkish schools. In Turkish villages, anyone with an education was highly respected. Old people stood up …

The Silence Of The Studio Lambs: How To Hear Your Students' Voices In A Postmodern Design Studio, Elijah Mirochnik Jan 2002

The Silence Of The Studio Lambs: How To Hear Your Students' Voices In A Postmodern Design Studio, Elijah Mirochnik

Proceedings of the 18th National Conference on the Beginning Design Student

Ideas that underlie postmodern thoght are rarely used in conversations about archrtectural education the way that philosophers and lrterary crrtics have used it since the early 1970s: as a call to abandon that portion of modern vocabulary that sustains Plato's story that Truth is something that already exists, that our own human capacrties are not enough to get us a glimpse of Truth, and therefore, that some method that is detached from our own inadequate capacrties is needed if we are ever to extract the Real Truth from our mortal inclinations toward deceiving ourselves by believing in mere opinion, felt …

The Pedagogics Of Play, Jay Mcclure Jan 2002

The Pedagogics Of Play, Jay Mcclure

Proceedings of the 18th National Conference on the Beginning Design Student

Teachers should emphasize the importance of play to a student's development, noting their individual talents they need to explore, tryout, take apart and investigate which is fundamental to learning. Design fundamental programs should develop pedagogies that guide student's play into progressive learning experiences in the essentials of form, mathematics, geometry, and creativity.

Teaching Mathematical Problem Solving In The Context Of Oregon's Educational Reform, Nicole R. Rigelman Jan 2002

Teaching Mathematical Problem Solving In The Context Of Oregon's Educational Reform, Nicole R. Rigelman

Dissertations and Theses

Implementation of Oregon’s Educational Reform Act (HB 3565 and HB 2991) provides the context for this inquiry as its emphasis on problem solving has impacted mathematics teaching and learning throughout the state. Even though all Oregon teachers are responding to the same policy, their goals in teaching problem solving vary. These goals and these practices are influenced by the way teachers view the role of problem solving in the curriculum. Further, their practice is influenced by their knowledge and beliefs about mathematics content, teaching, learning, and the reform policy. The questions addressed in this study are: (1) What do exemplary …

In Situ Hydraulic Testing And Water Quality Sampling In The Hyporheic Zone Of The Columbia River, Hanford Reach, Washington, Evan V. Arntzen Jan 2002

In Situ Hydraulic Testing And Water Quality Sampling In The Hyporheic Zone Of The Columbia River, Hanford Reach, Washington, Evan V. Arntzen

Dissertations and Theses

Several chemical and radiological contaminants are present in an unconfined aquifer underlying the U.S. Department of Energy's Hanford Site in southeast Washington State. Hexavalent chromium [Cr(VI)], previously used as an anticorrosive in plutonium production reactors on the shoreline of the Columbia River, is of particular concern because of its conservative nature, toxicity to humans and aquatic life, and proximity to protected salmon spawning habitat. Hydrogeologic data are abundant from the unconfined aquifer, but are lacking from the hyporheic zone through which Cr(VI) is transported into the river. A hydrogeologic study was conducted near one known Cr(VI) plume to determine the …

A Review Of Systems: New Paradigms For The Human Sciences, Martin Zwick Jan 2002

A Review Of Systems: New Paradigms For The Human Sciences, Martin Zwick

Complex Systems Faculty Publications and Presentations

This essay is a selective review of Systems: New Paradigms for the Human Sciences, edited by Gabriel Altmann and Walter A. Koch (Berlin: Walter de Gryter, 1998). It is selective because it is impossible to engage such a varied collection of systems-theoretic essays in a review of reasonable length. To invoke a relevant dialectical idea: the characteristic strength of any system is often also its characteristic weakness. One strength and weakness of the systems field is its great diversity, and this diversity is reflected in this volume by the range of subjects addressed in its 27 articles. I will not …

Computer-Based Testing In Vocational Assessment And Evaluation: A Primer For Rehabilitation Professionals, Tina M. Anctil Peterman, Nancy J. Adams Jan 2002

Computer-Based Testing In Vocational Assessment And Evaluation: A Primer For Rehabilitation Professionals, Tina M. Anctil Peterman, Nancy J. Adams

Counselor Education Faculty Publications and Presentations

Current technologies, including computerized assessments, assistive technology, and information/resource technology, are effective tools that offer the rehabilitation professional a variety of applications for vocational evaluation and work assessment. "The ability of vocational evaluators to effectively utilize computers to obtain useful information (e.g. availability of specific electronic devices, job accommodation techniques, job-matching) for vocational recommendations could ultimately affect the outcome goals achieved in the rehabilitation process" (Chan, Lam, Leahy, Parker, & Wong; 1989, p. 113). In order to appropriately use these technologies, rehabilitation professionals need to understand the issues surrounding the use of these tools (e.g., reliability, validity) and ethical concerns …

Classroom Instruction In Gates Grantee Schools A Baseline Report, Jeffrey T. Fouts, Carol Brown, Gayle Yvonne Thieman

Education Faculty Publications and Presentations

This study is part of the on-going program evaluation of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation’s Model Schools Initiative and Model Districts Initiative in the state of Washington. In developing the Teaching Attributes Observation Protocol (TAOP) a conceptual framework was identified based on extensive literature on constructivist teaching. From this framework and the foundation’s written materials we identified important components and indicators of constructivist teaching and implications for the classroom. We then produced an observation protocol with 7 lesson components and a number of indicators under each component. The content validity of the instrument was then checked against the literature …

Writing In The Contact Zone: Three Portraits Of Reflexivity And Transformation, Laurene L. Christensen Jan 2002

Writing In The Contact Zone: Three Portraits Of Reflexivity And Transformation, Laurene L. Christensen

Dissertations and Theses

Culture is at the core of language teaching. Because classrooms are contact zones (Pratt 1991), teachers must have a well-developed sense of their own intercultural competence so that they may better facilitate the cross-cultural discovery inherent in language teaching. Teacher preparation programs need to provide opportunities for new teachers to increase their intercultural awareness. The purpose of this research was to qualitatively understand the experiences of pre-service teachers in a required culture-learning class at a large urban university. Specifically, the focus of this study was the completion of a mini-ethnography project designed to give the students a cross-cultural exchange. Since …

Public Outreach And The "Hows" Of Archaeology : Archaeology As A Model For Education, Jon Darin Daehnke Jan 2002

Public Outreach And The "Hows" Of Archaeology : Archaeology As A Model For Education, Jon Darin Daehnke

Dissertations and Theses

There is growing awareness of the importance of public outreach in archaeology. Many professional archaeologists argue that in order to ensure continued funding we must communicate the relevance of our discipline to the public in a more effective manner. Furthermore, it is often argued that public outreach and education provides perhaps the only reliable defense against looting and rampant psuedoarchaeology.

Current outreach activities, however, tend to focus on what archaeologists have discovered about the past. While this type of outreach is important, a more effective model for public outreach would focus on the methods of archaeology, rather than the results. …

Allusion, Illusion And The Beginning Design Student, Albert C. Smith, Kendra Schank Smith Jan 2002

Allusion, Illusion And The Beginning Design Student, Albert C. Smith, Kendra Schank Smith

Proceedings of the 18th National Conference on the Beginning Design Student

This paper explores aspects of media that concern illusion and allusion. It will present some examples of beginning design student projects to question and elucidate both the inherent differences of these potentially dichotomous terms and how they might lead us in a more concordant direction for teaching beginning design and visual communications in architecture. In recent history, we have seen examples of drawings such as those published by Zaha Hadid and Daniel Libeskind that have had an inclination to place archrtecture into a greater state of allusion. These drawings are exciting and provoke the thoughtful references to the poss ibi …

Spatial Themes In A Three Week Project, Corey Saft Jan 2002

Spatial Themes In A Three Week Project, Corey Saft

Proceedings of the 18th National Conference on the Beginning Design Student

In speaking to The Enigma of the First Assignment. the premise of this paper is explained with a studio in which a design project is addressed through sets of rules. Rules fall into three categories: for program, for site, and for assembly. These rules were left open-ended and they provided the first footholds for a student to get to work designing and not ponder the much larger problem of design itself.

The Parallel Projection, As Flights Of Fancy, Mary Nixon Jan 2002

The Parallel Projection, As Flights Of Fancy, Mary Nixon

Proceedings of the 18th National Conference on the Beginning Design Student

For a student of architecture, developing imaginative points-of-view and drawing acumen, is a must. The parallel projection is one such drawing type that aptly addresses point-of-view. Its three-dimensional properties and simple methodology make it a standard of beginning designers. Its inclination toward aerial adventures is an especially important feature to understanding its use. This paper examines the long history and sometimes-parallel track to architecture the parallel projection has enjoyed.

Preservice Teachers' Perceptions Of Service-Learning, Kim Flottemesch, Tuula Heide, Melvin Pedras Jan 2002

Preservice Teachers' Perceptions Of Service-Learning, Kim Flottemesch, Tuula Heide, Melvin Pedras

Northwest Journal of Teacher Education

The study explored preservice teachers' experiences and perceptions of implementation of service-learning into the teacher preparation progrcun and its use as a teaching methodology in their own teaching. Through quantitative data generated from a survey instrument, the concept of a service-learning as a viable teaching method was well received. After an initial introduction to the concept of service-learning methhodology, a moderate percentage of preservice teachers stated they would likely use it in their own teaching. Data suggests no systematic relationship between certainty of teaching as a career choice and perceptions of service-learning. However, the data does suggest significant differences in …
