Gscope: A Visualization Tool For Time-Sensitive Software, Ashvin Goel, Jonathan Walpole Jun 2002

Gscope: A Visualization Tool For Time-Sensitive Software, Ashvin Goel, Jonathan Walpole

Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

This paper describes gscope, a visualization tool for time-sensitive applications. Gscope provides an oscilloscope-like interface that can be integrated with applications. It focuses on software visualization and is thus designed to handle various types of signal waveforms, periodic or event-driven, in single or multithreaded environments as well as local or distributed applications. Gscope helps in visually verifying system correctness and modifying system parameters and thus can complement standard debugging techniques and be used to build compelling software demos. Initial experiments with using gscope show that the library has low overhead.

Provisioning On-Line Games: A Traffic Analysis Of A Busy Counter-Strike Server, Wu-Chang Feng, Francis Chang, Wu-Chi Feng, Jonathan Walpole

Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

This paper describes the results of a 500 million packet trace of a popular on-line, multi-player, game server. The results show that the traffic behavior of this heavily loaded game server is highly predictable and can be attributed to the fact that current game designs target the saturation of the narrowest, last-mile link. Specifically, in order to maximize the interactivity of the game itself and to provide relatively uniform experiences between players playing over different network speeds, on-line games typically fix their usage requirements in such a way as to saturate the network link of their lowest speed players. While …

Supporting Low-Latency Tcp-Based Media Streams, Ashvin Goel, Charles Krasic, Kang Li, Jonathan Walpole May 2002

Supporting Low-Latency Tcp-Based Media Streams, Ashvin Goel, Charles Krasic, Kang Li, Jonathan Walpole

Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

The dominance of the TCP protocol on the Internet and its success in maintaining Internet stability has led to several TCP-based stored media-streaming approaches. The success of these approaches raises the question whether TCP can be used for low-latency streaming. Low latency streaming allows responsive control operations for media streaming and can make interactive applications feasible. We examined adapting the TCP send buffer size based on TCP's congestion window to reduce application perceived network latency. Our results show that this simple idea significantly improves the number of packets that can be delivered within 200 ms and 500 ms thresholds.

Chemistry Faculty Publications and Presentations

The magnetic-field, temperature, and angular dependence of the interlayer magnetoresistance of two different quasi-two-dimensional (2D) organic superconductors is reported. For k -BEDT-TTF)₂I₃, where BEDTTTF is bisethylenedithio-tetrathiafulvalene, we find a well-resolved peak in the angle-dependent magnetoresistance at Q590°(field parallel to the layers). This clear-cut proof for the coherent nature of the interlayer transport is absent for β″–(BEDT-TTF)₂SF₅CH₂CF₂SO₃. This and the nonmetallic behavior of the magnetoresistance suggest an incoherent quasiparticle motion for the latter 2D metal.

The Effects Of Parent Care And Child Care Role Quality On Work Outcomes Among Dual-Earner Couples In The Sandwiched Generation, Angela Rickard Apr 2002

The Effects Of Parent Care And Child Care Role Quality On Work Outcomes Among Dual-Earner Couples In The Sandwiched Generation, Angela Rickard

Dissertations and Theses

Research has shown that more men and women are occupying multiple roles as employees and caregivers to a child or an elder. The proliferation of women in the U.S. workforce since the 1960's has resulted in a “typical” American family that no longer consists of an employed father and stay-at-home mother, but rather one in which the father and mother both work outside the home. Indeed, the “dual-earner” family is the dominant family form in the U.S. today and into the foreseeable future. The aging and increased longevity of the American population, coupled with changes in the level and timing …

Automatic Passenger Counter Evaluation: Implications For National Transit Database Reporting, Thomas J. Kimpel, James G. Strathman, David Griffin, Steve Callas, Rick Gerhart

Center for Urban Studies Publications and Reports

This paper presents findings from a study assessing the accuracy and precision of automatic passenger counter (APC) technology at Tri-County Metropolitan Transportation District of Oregon (Tri-Met). Video surveillance cameras, rather than ride checkers, were used to establish reference values for determining APC accuracy and precision. Analysis of data collection, processing and reporting methods at Tri-Met indicates that APC data, along with a properly designed sampling plan, can be used for internal monthly ridership reporting and annual National Transit Database (NTD) reporting. Presently, NTD sampling plans require that bus trips be randomly selected prior to manual data collection efforts. The sampling …

The Crisis Of Scientific Information Dissemination In North America, Gretta E. Siegel Apr 2002

The Crisis Of Scientific Information Dissemination In North America, Gretta E. Siegel

Library Faculty and Staff Publications and Presentations

Today, I wish to speak a little bit about my observations and concerns about what is happening in North America and in Europe in the area of scientific publishing. Part of my talk will touch upon economic and political environments as well, so a few disclaimers are needed: I am not an economist, I am not a political scientist, and I am not a publisher. I used to be a scientist, but I am not one now. I am a librarian, and my remarks are based on 17 years of observation and experience as a librarian. However, libraries exist in …

Research and Training Center - Focal Point

Strengths-based practice is not just about supporting consumers as they identify and use their own positive capacities and assets. It is also about finding community assets which help link the consumer to these potential informal and community supports. For many people—consumers and providers alike—there is a great appeal to the idea of building an individual’s strengths while drawing on the community to build a supportive, individualized network of relationships and involvements. Yet when it comes down to planning and providing services and supports for children with emotional and behavioral disorders and their families, it is often difficult to see whether …

White Paper On Issues And Strategies For Building A State Transportation Framework, Kenneth Dueker, Paul Bender Apr 2002

White Paper On Issues And Strategies For Building A State Transportation Framework, Kenneth Dueker, Paul Bender

Center for Urban Studies Publications and Reports

The purpose of this white paper is to systematically re-examine transportation data sharing issues that have been discussed at length, but in a manner to foster final decisions and closure. In some cases, choices among alternatives may require more detailed analysis or pilot studies. The development of this document has benefited from discussion at the Interorganizational Resource Information Coordinating Council (IRICC) Roads Committee, which has led to this consensus document. This sixth and final version serves to draw the process to a close and recommends a twofold approach to the development of a Transportation Framework. It also recommends six pilot …

Infopipes: An Abstraction For Multimedia Streaming, Andrew P. Black, Huang Jie, Rainer Koster, Jonathan Walpole, Calton Pu Apr 2002

Infopipes: An Abstraction For Multimedia Streaming, Andrew P. Black, Huang Jie, Rainer Koster, Jonathan Walpole, Calton Pu

Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

To simplify the task of building distributed streaming applications, we propose a new abstraction for information flow – Infopipes. Infopipes make information flow primary, not an auxiliary mechanism that is hidden away. Systems are built by connecting predefined component Infopipes such as sources, sinks, buffers, filters, broadcasting pipes, and multiplexing pipes. The goal of Infopipes is not to hide communication, like an RPC system, but to reify it: to represent communication explicitly as objects that the program can interrogate and manipulate. Moreover, these objects represent communication in application-level terms, not in terms of network or process implementation.

Keynote Address Towards Sustainable Oer Creation For Ethnic Studies, Tatiana Bryant Mar 2002

Keynote Address Towards Sustainable Oer Creation For Ethnic Studies, Tatiana Bryant

Open Education Week 2022

Tatiana Bryant’s current research focuses on perceptions of Open Educational Resources (OER) and Open Access amongst scholars who identify as Black, Indigenous, and people of color, with an emphasis on Ethnic Studies faculty and graduate students. Ethnic Studies is a discipline founded with a unique ethos centered in community building, public scholarship, and racial and social justice. This mission aligns with the philosophy of Open, specifically the creation and accessibility of OER. Despite this ideological alignment, there is a substantial lack of OER for Ethnic Studies. In this keynote, she will discuss her latest study on the barriers to sustainable …

Rethinking Studio Pedagogy: Teaching Introductory Architectural Design At The Graduate Level, Michael E. Gamble, Richard Dagenhart, Chris Jarrett Mar 2002

Rethinking Studio Pedagogy: Teaching Introductory Architectural Design At The Graduate Level, Michael E. Gamble, Richard Dagenhart, Chris Jarrett

Proceedings of the 18th National Conference on the Beginning Design Student

Over the last two years, our Architecture Program committed considerable intellectual capital to the rethinking of graduate level introductory design studio pedagogy for students entering our Masters of Architecture 1/3? year program. This reevaluation concentrates on several unique challenges intrinsic to the graduate level introductory design curriculum, which include:

The inherent differences between the age and personality profiles of undergraduate and graduate students. Many programs treat the curricula as equal, with graduate students executing the same exercises as undergraduates, only at a faster pace.

The developmental gap that exists in the second year of most M. Arch 1 programs between …

While Mind Dances With Heart: Nurturing Design Vocabularies Through Personal And Cultural Identities, Shenglin Chang Mar 2002

While Mind Dances With Heart: Nurturing Design Vocabularies Through Personal And Cultural Identities, Shenglin Chang

Proceedings of the 18th National Conference on the Beginning Design Student

Although there are many ways of approaching design. my aims "in teaching young student designers was to have them understand the importance of finding the balance between the intuitive with the rational." (Mirochnik, 2000: 65) The approach that I take in teaching my beginning landscape design studio is one in which I draw upon my former career as a dancer/ choreographer. I have found that within the process of creating and performing dance, the rational and the visceral constantly intersect: choreography and performance are processes in which the mind dances with the heart. I educate my beginning design students to …

Feng Shui And Chinese Rituals Of Death Across The Oregon Landscape, Andrew Ryall Briggs Mar 2002

Feng Shui And Chinese Rituals Of Death Across The Oregon Landscape, Andrew Ryall Briggs

Geography Masters Research Papers

Paper 2: Upwards of 20,000 Chinese migrated to Oregon before 1890. Upon their deaths many were interred in "Chinese cemeteries." In China, the placement of cemeteries is an important aspect of the traditional Chinese religion. This paper asks if the early Chinese practiced the same Feng Shui in the placement of the Oregon gravesites. While Feng Shui is not codified, there are a few general principles to determine graveyard placement, and by comparing Oregon Chinese gravesites with that required for proper Feng Shui placement, concluded that the early Chinese immigrants may have followed the precepts of traditional Chinese religion in …

Design's Community Of Knowledge: Identifying And Organizing Design's Fundamental Concepts To Support Teaching And Learning, William R. Benedict Mar 2002

Design's Community Of Knowledge: Identifying And Organizing Design's Fundamental Concepts To Support Teaching And Learning, William R. Benedict

Proceedings of the 18th National Conference on the Beginning Design Student

The words we use and the concepts they represent affect how we see, think and talk about the world. Each community of knowledge (e.g., Architecture, Physics, Sociology, etc.) has a language that is specific to that community or discipline. Membership in a community of knowledge involves learning the community's language and developing an understanding of the concepts that it identifies. Our level of understanding of a community's language can either obscure or clarify-it can help or hinder communication. The degree to which we understand the language and concepts of a community of knowledge is directly related to our ability to …

An Architectural Exhibition: "Bench With The Film Of Its Own Making", Jonathan A. Hale Mar 2002

An Architectural Exhibition: "Bench With The Film Of Its Own Making", Jonathan A. Hale

Proceedings of the 18th National Conference on the Beginning Design Student

This paper describes a design-and-build studio project carried out at the University of Nottingham with students in their fourth year - although elements of it could also be considered appropriate for the 'Beginning Design Student'. The programme for the project is based on the premise that there is a fundamental continuity between the human body and the rest of the world. This idea has been around for some time and appears in a variety of forms: The Biblical quotation above which suggests a material connection between body and earth; the early medical theories of Hippocrates which describe the influence of …

Ordinary Unfamiliarity: Foundation Pedagogy Through The Critique Of The Everyday, Kevin R. Klinger, Marc Swackhamer Mar 2002

Ordinary Unfamiliarity: Foundation Pedagogy Through The Critique Of The Everyday, Kevin R. Klinger, Marc Swackhamer

Proceedings of the 18th National Conference on the Beginning Design Student

In our new foundation program, we proceed from two principles of instruction: first, we direct the focus of work away from conventional architectural topics and use analogy to awaken native critical insight; second, we postpone traditional "design" activity by strictly emphasizing observation skills and critical analysis. We delay design activity until the first quarter of the second year, in preparation for which we organize firstyear \tudio workshops around short iterative exercises that capitalize on the students' familiarity with the everyday world. We then structure these problems to render the everyday world in unfamiliar terms. This oscillation between the ordinary and …

Design As A Liberating Practice: Design-Build With First Years, Eduardo Aquino Mar 2002

Design As A Liberating Practice: Design-Build With First Years, Eduardo Aquino

Proceedings of the 18th National Conference on the Beginning Design Student

The academy is not paradise. But learning is a place where paradise can be created. The classroom [studio], with all its limitations, remains a location of possibilrt.y. In that field of possibility we have the opportunity to labor for freedom, to demand of ourselves and our comrades, an openness of mind and heart that allows us to face realrty even as we collectively imagine ways to move beyond boundaries, to transgress. This is education as the practice of freedom.
