Immigrant Students And The College Classroom Climate In Higher Education, Becky Appley Boesch Jan 2008

Immigrant Students And The College Classroom Climate In Higher Education, Becky Appley Boesch

Dissertations and Theses

In recent years, the immigrant population in the U.S. has increased dramatically. This increase has caused educational institutions to try to understand this population and their needs in order to aid in their academic success. While this awareness has surfaced in K-12 education, higher education continues, partly because of a lack of research on these students, to render these students and their needs insignificant. While this paper cannot begin to explore all the questions needed to be answered in terms of this population, it can provide an initial glimpse into one important aspect of education for the immigrant, the university …

Modulation Of Water Exchange In Europium(Iii) Dota–Tetraamide Complexes Via Electronic Substituent Effects, S. James Ratnakar, Mark Woods, Angelo J.M. Lubag, Zoltan Kovacs, A. Dean Sherry Jan 2008

Modulation Of Water Exchange In Europium(Iii) Dota–Tetraamide Complexes Via Electronic Substituent Effects, S. James Ratnakar, Mark Woods, Angelo J.M. Lubag, Zoltan Kovacs, A. Dean Sherry

Chemistry Faculty Publications and Presentations

The chemical exchange saturation transfer (CEST) efficiency for a series Eu3+-based tetraamide complexes bearing p-substituents on a single coordinating pendant arm is highly sensitive to water exchange rates. The CEST effect increases in the order Me < MeO < F ∼ CO2tBu < CN ≪ H. These results show that CEST contrast can be modulated by changes in electron density at a single ligating atom, and this forms the basis of creating imaging agents that respond to chemical oxidation and reduction.

Head Start Parents' Perceptions Of Parental Involvement During Their Children's Transition To Kindergarten : A Phenomenological Study, Dawn Angela Barberis Jan 2008

Head Start Parents' Perceptions Of Parental Involvement During Their Children's Transition To Kindergarten : A Phenomenological Study, Dawn Angela Barberis

Dissertations and Theses

Schools are recognizing the importance of parent involvement in children's education, but they often struggle to work with families living in poverty whose definition of parent partnership may differ from that of school staff (Lareau, 1987). Parents who live in poverty may feel inferior to school staff due to their lack of economic and educational resources. They may lack the expertise to be able to effectively communicate and work with school staff in making decisions that affect their children. With the increased expectations that schools place on families in supporting their children's education, this mismatch between the resources and experiences …

Police Organizations : An Empricial Examination Of American Sheriff's Offices And Municipal Police Agencies, Matthew Adam Jones Jan 2008

Police Organizations : An Empricial Examination Of American Sheriff's Offices And Municipal Police Agencies, Matthew Adam Jones

Dissertations and Theses

The landscape of American policing is comprised of a myriad of police organizations, each serving a distinct function and populace. Yet, police reformers rarely recognize this and continue to disseminate 'umbrella' policy prescriptions to all policing organizations. This body of research argues that public and police administrators must take into account the nature of the organization and its constraining forces before prescribing change or initiating policy. I argue that to intelligently construct police agencies, prescribe policy, and accurately diagnose police organization behavior we must first have a strong idea, if not solid understanding, of the factors that shape and constrain …

Reconciling Japan And China, Mel Gurtov Jan 2008

Reconciling Japan And China, Mel Gurtov

Political Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

The conflict-resolution literature offers new insights to reconciling parties in conflict. This article applies that literature, along with political-science approaches, to the seemingly intractable China-Japan rivalry. Proceeding from the standpoint that China and Japan need one another, and should manage their conflict for mutual benefit, the article suggests several steps they may take—bilaterally, in multilateral settings, and in civil society—to reduce tensions and promote better understanding.

Being There: University Faculty, School Administrators, And Teachers Engaged In School Improvement, David Townsend, Pamela Adams Jan 2008

Being There: University Faculty, School Administrators, And Teachers Engaged In School Improvement, David Townsend, Pamela Adams

Northwest Journal of Teacher Education

University faculty members, district and school administrators, and teams of teachers from seven rural schools worked together for 18 months, seeking to accomplish clearly identified school improvement goals using a collaborative inquiry approach. Five of seven school teams demonstrated increases in collaborative behavior that, in turn, enhanced their ability to accomplish their goals. Four schools showed improvements in student achievement on external exams that were identified as measures related to their goals. Two schools showed minimal improvement on any measures. Lack of improvement was mostly related to changes in team membership, changes in leadership, unresolved conflict, or an inability to …

E-portfolios that function as collaborative, personalized learning spaces rather than just showcases offer a means of assessment that can support generative learning and build the skills essential for 21st century students. Gary Brown, Nils Peterson, Adrian Wilson, and Jim Ptaszynski identify the challenges and discuss some lessons learned in the Washington State University effort to adopt an e-portfolio program based on Microsoft® Office SharePoint Server 2007. The emerging technology supporting e-portfolios and personal learning environments present opportunities to engage students and external stakeholders more fully by making learning visible.

Long Form Improvisation - Creating Spontaneous Communities Through Collaborative Comedic Performance, Brad Fortier Jan 2008

Long Form Improvisation - Creating Spontaneous Communities Through Collaborative Comedic Performance, Brad Fortier

Dissertations and Theses

Improvisational theater can tell us much about the driving social and cultural forces behind collaboration and collective constructions of reality, as well as the sorts of behaviors and practices that bolster their efficacy. The collaboration of the performers on generating a comedic piece of theater spontaneously from audience suggestions in a long improvisation creates a sense of what Victor Turner called communitas for the performers. That phenomenon can create a larger sense of socio-emotional unity between the audience and performers. Turning an anthropological lens on comedy theater, this presentation explores the performer-audience dynamic and its impact on the success of …

Job Satisfaction Of Us Medical School Faculty With A Focus On Internal Medicine Departments, April Corrice, Sarah A. Bunton Jan 2008

Job Satisfaction Of Us Medical School Faculty With A Focus On Internal Medicine Departments, April Corrice, Sarah A. Bunton

Educational Leadership and Policy Faculty Publications and Presentations

As demands on academic medical faculty have risen, medical school leaders and researchers have raised awareness about and attention to job satisfaction, faculty stress and burnout, and struggles with recruitment and retention. This increased attention is important because researchers have consistently demonstrated an empirical link between job satisfaction and retention as well as between job dissatisfaction and intent to leave an organization (1–4). Given the high costs of faculty turnover (5–7), it is essential to understand the factors that contribute to the satisfaction of medical school faculty. Using responses from a faculty satisfaction survey administered to full-time faculty at 10 …

A Profile Of Teacher Development In Literacy Instruction From Preservice Education To Beginning Teaching, Dixie D. Massey Jan 2008

A Profile Of Teacher Development In Literacy Instruction From Preservice Education To Beginning Teaching, Dixie D. Massey

Northwest Journal of Teacher Education

The purpose of this research was to better understand and describe how three teachers navigated the transition from preservice teaching to the beginning years of teaching. I followed three teachers through their junior and senior years of undergraduate education and into their first four years of teaching. While the context of their entire teaching experience was important, particular attention was given to their literacy instruction, first as they conceptualized it in reading and language arts methods coursework, second as they practiced it in their student teaching experiences, and third as they practiced it in their own classrooms. A Profile of …

Embedded Library, Embedded Librarian: Strategies For Providing Reference Services In Online Courseware, Meredith G. Farkas Jan 2008

Embedded Library, Embedded Librarian: Strategies For Providing Reference Services In Online Courseware, Meredith G. Farkas

Library Faculty and Staff Publications and Presentations

This chapter explores the possibilities for embedding library services in online course management systems, including the creation of portals to library services for online learners. While technology is always an issue, many of these strategies are decidedly low-tech, but “high-touch,” putting a human face on what was before a faceless edifice. Embedding the library within the course management system streamlines access for online learners, making it more likely that they will utilize library resources and services.

In this article we propose the pedagogical model bridging activities to address advanced foreign language proficiency in the context of existing and emerging internet communication and information tools and communities. The article begins by establishing the need for language and genre-focused activities at the advanced level that attend to the shifting social practices and emerging literacies associated with digital media. Grounded in principles of language awareness and the concept of multiliteracies, the bridging activities model centers on guided exploration and analysis of student selected or created digital vernacular texts originating in Web 2.0 and other technologies/practices such as instant messaging …

Daily Forecasts Of Columbia River Plume Circulation: A Tale Of Spring/Summer Cruises, Yinglong J. Zhang, Antonio M. Baptista, Barbara M. Hickey, Byron C. Crump, David A. Jay, Michael Wilkin, Charles Seaton Jan 2008

Daily Forecasts Of Columbia River Plume Circulation: A Tale Of Spring/Summer Cruises, Yinglong J. Zhang, Antonio M. Baptista, Barbara M. Hickey, Byron C. Crump, David A. Jay, Michael Wilkin, Charles Seaton

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Semi-operational daily forecasts of circulation from an observatory for the Columbia River estuary-plume-shelf system routinely support oceanographic cruises, by providing 24h-ahead estimates of plume location and structure for planning purposes and for near real-time interpretation of observations. This paper analyzes forecast skill during spring/summer cruises in 2004-2007. Assessment addresses both qualitative descriptions of major plume trends and features and quantitative representation of data from (primarily) vessel-based flow-through, cast and towed systems. Forecasts emerge as robust predictors of plume location and variability, with skill that has grown over time, at least in part due to improvements in model algorithms. When the …

Patterns Of Aspect-Oriented Design, Black P. Andrew, James Noble, David J. Pearce, Arno Scmidmeir Jan 2008

Patterns Of Aspect-Oriented Design, Black P. Andrew, James Noble, David J. Pearce, Arno Scmidmeir

Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

Aspect-oriented programming languages are becoming commonplace, and programmers are accumulating experience in building and maintaining aspect-oriented systems. This paper addresses how the use of these languages affects program design: how aspect-oriented languages change the design space, which designs should be emulated and which avoided, and the strengths and weaknesses of particular kinds of design. We identify five patterns of aspect-oriented design: Spectator, Regulator, Patch, Extension, and Heterarchical Design. For each pattern, we describe the problem it solves, show how aspect-oriented language features are used in the pattern, give characteristic examples of the pattern’s use, and assess its benefits and liabilities. …

Scalable Concurrent Hash Tables Via Relativistic Programming, Josh Triplett Jan 2008

Scalable Concurrent Hash Tables Via Relativistic Programming, Josh Triplett

Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

Existing approaches to concurrent programming often fail to account for synchronization costs on modern shared-memory multipro- cessor architectures. A new approach to concurrent programming, known as relativistic programming, can reduce or in some cases eliminate synchronization overhead on such architectures. This approach avoids the costs of inter-processor communication and memory access by permitting processors to operate from a relativistic view of memory provided by their own caches, rather than from an absolute reference frame of memory as seen by all processors. This research shows how relativistic programming techniques can provide the perceived advantages of optimistic synchronization without the useless parallelism …

The Indefinite Metric Of R. Mrugala And The Geometry Of The Thermodynamical Phase Space, Serge Preston, James Vargo Jan 2008

The Indefinite Metric Of R. Mrugala And The Geometry Of The Thermodynamical Phase Space, Serge Preston, James Vargo

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications and Presentations

We study an indefinite metric G which was introduced by R. Mrugala and is defined on the contact phase space (P, θ) of a homogeneous thermodynamical system. We describe the curvature properties and the isometry group of the metric G. We established an isomorphism of the space (P, θ, G) with the Heisenberg Lie group Hn, endowed with the right invariant contact structure and the right invariant indefinite metric. The lift of the metric G to the symplectization of contact space (P, θ) and its properties are studied. Finally we introduce the "hyperbolic projectivization" of the space …
