An Assessment Of Four-Hour Sample Durations Used To Determine Full-Shift Noise Exposures In A Foundry, Vince Marlo Fleming
An Assessment Of Four-Hour Sample Durations Used To Determine Full-Shift Noise Exposures In A Foundry, Vince Marlo Fleming
Community & Environmental Health Theses & Dissertations
Full-shift sampling, usually eight hours, is traditionally performed to assess daily occupational noise exposure. This sampling approach is inefficient, and costly for repeated, long-term exposure evaluations. This study assessed the use of four-hour sample durations and subsequent data analysis to determine daily occupational noise exposures in a foundry. The four-hour sample durations were extracted from full-shift samples and analyzed on their ability to provide valid data for estimating mean daily noise exposure levels without significantly affecting sampling precision or accuracy. Results of this study indicate four-hour sample durations can be used successfully to estimate full-shift noise exposures provided certain criteria …
Biosystematics And Diversification In The Genus Striga Lour. (Scrophulariaceae) In Africa, Kamal-Eldin Ibrahim Mohamed
Biosystematics And Diversification In The Genus Striga Lour. (Scrophulariaceae) In Africa, Kamal-Eldin Ibrahim Mohamed
Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations
Of the 34 taxa of Striga (29 species) that occur in Africa, 25 are endemic. Species diversity differs from region to region. The subtropical zone has 74% of the taxa including 41% endemics. Within this region, the West African part (from Senegal to eastern Nigeria) has 62% of the total taxa including 24% endemics. South of the equator the number of taxa is 56% of the total with 21% endemics, a proportion slightly less than that for West Africa. I recognize 29 species based on extensive herbarium and field studies. A new species from Angola is described. Striga yemenica previously …
Analysis Of Human Sperm Chromatin Integrity, Silvina M. Bocca
Analysis Of Human Sperm Chromatin Integrity, Silvina M. Bocca
Theses and Dissertations in Biomedical Sciences
Determining potential maternal or paternal sources of abnormal chromosomal constitution gives opportunity for preconception genetic counseling. The most direct determination is achieved by analyzing the nuclear constitution of the gametes.
The present study evaluated the integrity of human spermatozoal nuclear material in the two condensation stages of chromatin and chromosomes. Original semen samples (ORI) and their swim-up fractions (SW, selected for motility) from men of known (donors) and unknown (patients) fertility were analyzed. The extent of chromatin condensation was assessed by light microscopy and flow cytometry during the time course of a chemically-induced decondensation reaction.
Motile spermatozoa were used to …
The Speciation Of Dissolved Uranium In Marine Waters, Darrin Kent Mann
The Speciation Of Dissolved Uranium In Marine Waters, Darrin Kent Mann
OES Theses and Dissertations
Uranium has been used extensively for quantifying geochemical processes in the marine environment. Due to its low concentration, about 3.3 μg/1, some form of preconcentration is required for analysis. The two most widely used pre-concentration schemes are co-precipitation with iron hydroxide, and chelating ion exchange chromatography. These methods were developed by following the behavior of inorganic uranium isotopes and seemed to give identical results. However, when used for trace metal analysis, these methods have been shown to extract different fractions from the same sample. Chelex-100 resin removes only inorganic or weakly bound trace metals from a solution, while the precipitates …
Iodate Transformation By Marine Phytoplankton, Ajcharaporn Udomkit
Iodate Transformation By Marine Phytoplankton, Ajcharaporn Udomkit
OES Theses and Dissertations
The speciation and distribution of iodine in the oceans are partly under biological control. Phytoplankton are suspected to mediate the transformation of iodate to iodide via reduction by the enzyme nitrate reductase. However, there has been no direct evidence to support this hypothesis.
The influence of phytoplankton on the speciation of iodine was examined with emphasis on the transformation of iodate to iodide. Six cultures of marine phytoplankton: Skeletonema costatum, Dunaliella tertiolecta, Amphidinium carterae, Tetraselmis levis, Emiliania huxleyi, and Synechococcus sp. , have been examined for their ability to take up and reduce iodate under a reduced nitrate environment. In …
On The Low-Frequency Current And Temperature Fluctuations Along The Shelf Break In The South Atlantic Bight, Sunny Yu Wu
On The Low-Frequency Current And Temperature Fluctuations Along The Shelf Break In The South Atlantic Bight, Sunny Yu Wu
OES Theses and Dissertations
Current and temperature data collected along the shelf edge in the South Atlantic Bight were analyzed using a spectral analysis technique. The power spectra of both alongshore currents and temperatures (upon removal of seasonal trends) in the mid- to lower water column suggest a significant energy peak at 28 days. The spatial characteristics of the fluctuations around this period band were determined using the frequency domain empirical orthogonal function (EOF) analysis applied to the concurrent current and temperature records. Consistent results were obtained from the upstream side of the Charleston Bump. Around the 28-day period, temperature seems to have little …
Diamond Thin Film Sensors For Hypersonic Flow Studies, Bhaskar Kumar Bulusu
Diamond Thin Film Sensors For Hypersonic Flow Studies, Bhaskar Kumar Bulusu
Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations
Conventional metal film sensors can measure flow instabilities of the order of 60 kHz. The turbulence fluctuations in the hypersonic regime are of the order of 200- 400 kHz. To measure these fluctuations, sensors with an enhanced frequency response are required. Therefore, it is required to identify the parameters to enhance the frequency response. These include parameters such as the temperature sensitivity, the resistivity, the thermal conductivity, the diffusivity, specific heat capacity and the geometric size and shape of the film and the substrate. A selection of materials was then carried out to maximize the frequency response. Diamond was identified …

Investigation Of Selenium Status In Hypo-, Hyper- And Euthyroid Children, Ping Sun
Chemistry & Biochemistry Theses & Dissertations
Recently, it has been reported that human type I iodothyronine deiodinase, an enzyme important in the conversion of T4 to T3 , is a selenoenzyme. Several studies have reported alterations in plasma selenium level in hypo- and hyperthyroid patients.
Using polarized Zeeman-effect atomic absorption spectroscopy, we measured selenium, zinc, copper and manganese concentrations in the plasma and/or red blood cells in children with or without thyroid disease being seen at the outpatient clinic at Children's Hospital of the King's Daughters. Children with thyroid disease were subdivided into untreated, treated and nonresponsive groups. Data were analyzed using Student's t-test …
Premature Infant Attractiveness And Temperament In The Prediction Of Maternal Sensitivity, Cheryl L. Shiflett
Premature Infant Attractiveness And Temperament In The Prediction Of Maternal Sensitivity, Cheryl L. Shiflett
Psychology Theses & Dissertations
The influence of infant attractiveness and temperament on maternal sensitivity is important to examine in infants born prematurely because many characteristics associated with prematurity, such as postnatal cranial molding, may negatively impact maternal response. The present study investigated maternal perceptions of preterm infant development, attractiveness, age, and temperament, and examined the influence of attractiveness and temperament on maternal sensitivity. Twenty-nine mothers of preterms completed questionnaires on infant behavior, development, temperament, rated photographs for attractiveness and age, and were videotaped with their infant to measure maternal sensitivity according to CARE-Index procedures (Crittenden, 1988). Results indicated that mothers have more negative expectancies …
Translational Regulation Of The C-Jun Proto-Oncogene, Anil Sehgal
Translational Regulation Of The C-Jun Proto-Oncogene, Anil Sehgal
Theses and Dissertations in Biomedical Sciences
The v-jun oncogene was originally isolated from the ASV17 virus in 1987. Ever since its isolation, extensive work has been done to understand the role of the v-jun oncogene in cell transformation. The c-Jun protein is a transcription factor which binds to the DNA target TGACTCA. The c-Jun protein binds to DNA in the form of dimers. It can form homodimers with itself and heterodimers with Jun family (JunB and JunD), Fos family (FosB, Fra1 and Fra2), or with CREB family members through the leucine zipper motif. Because the c-jun proto-oncogene plays an important role in cell transformation, extensive work …
Estimation Of Diversity And Community Structure Through Restriction-Fragment-Length-Polymorphism Distribution Analysis Of Bacterial 16s Ribosomal-Rna Genes From A Microbial Mat At An Active, Hydrothermal Vent System, Loihi Seamount, Hawaii, Craig L. Moyer, Fred C. Dobbs, David M. Karl
Estimation Of Diversity And Community Structure Through Restriction-Fragment-Length-Polymorphism Distribution Analysis Of Bacterial 16s Ribosomal-Rna Genes From A Microbial Mat At An Active, Hydrothermal Vent System, Loihi Seamount, Hawaii, Craig L. Moyer, Fred C. Dobbs, David M. Karl
OES Faculty Publications
PCR was used to amplify (eu)bacterial small-subunit (16S) rRNA genes from total-community genomic DNA. The source of total-community genomic DNA used for this culture-independent analysis was the microbial mats from a deep-sea, hydrothermal vent system, Pele's Vents, located at Loihi Seamount, Hawaii. Oligonucleotides complementary to conserved regions in the 16S rRNA-encoding DNA (rDNA) of bacteria were used to direct the synthesis of PCR products, which were then subcloned by blunt-end ligation into phagemid vector pBluescript II. Restriction fragment length polymorphism patterns, created by using tandem tetrameric restriction endonucleases, revealed the presence of 12 groups of 16S rRNA genes representing discrete …

Neuropsychological Functioning Among Violent And Nonviolent Sex Offenders, Pamela Knox-Jones
Psychology Theses & Dissertations
Violent sex offenders, nonviolent sex offenders, violent non-sex offenders, and nonviolent non-sex offenders were compared on neuropsychological testing and on personality testing. A neuropsychological test battery and the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory - 2 (MMPI-2) were administered to 93 and 50 male felons respectively. Subjects were drawn from a data base provided by the state Department of Corrections. Potential indicators of neuropsychological impairment were controlled during the selection process. Analyses of Variance (alpha =.05) found that violent sex offenders scored significantly lower than the other three groups on two measures that are sensitive to left hemisphere impairment and one that …
The Role Of Nitrogen Availability, Hydroperiod And Litter Quality In Root Decomposition Along A Barrier Island Chronosequence, Christine Elizabeth Conn
The Role Of Nitrogen Availability, Hydroperiod And Litter Quality In Root Decomposition Along A Barrier Island Chronosequence, Christine Elizabeth Conn
Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations
The decomposition of organic matter regulates carbon and nutrient flux between biotic and abiotic pools. Traditional research emphasizes above ground decomposition processes and, by inference, extends these findings to below ground systems. The study, conducted along a southeastern Atlantic Coast barrier island dune and swale chronosequence (Virginia Coast Reserve Long Term Ecological Research site), addressed how hydroperiod, litter quality and nitrogen availability influenced below ground root decay in response to gradients associated with site age and topographic position and in the context of a nitrogen limited ecosystem. Effects on rates of mass loss and nitrogen and phosphorus dynamics during decomposition …

A Comparison Of A Validated Otolith Method To Age Weakfish, Cynoscion Regalis, With The Traditional Scale Method, Susan K. Lowerre-Barbieri, Mark E. Chittenden Jr., Cynthia M. Jones
OES Faculty Publications
Otoliths, scales, dorsal spines, and pectoral-fin rays were compared to ascertain the best hardpart for determining the age of weakfish, Cynoscion regalis. Each showed concentric marks, which could be interpreted as annuli. Sectioned otoliths, however, consistently showed the clearest marks, had 100% agreement between and within readers, and were validated by the marginal increment method for ages 1-5. This validated method of ageing weakfish was then compared with the traditionally used scale method. The scale method was less precise, as demonstrated by lower percent agreement, and generally assigned younger ages for fish older than age 6 (as determined by …

The Biogeochemistry Of Hydrogen Sulfide: Phytoplankton Production In The Surface Ocean, Russell S. Walsh, Gregory A. Cutter, William M. Dunstan, Joel Radford-Knoery, Jennifer T. Elder
OES Faculty Publications
Hydrogen sulfide can exist in oxic waters in the form of a dissolved gas, dissociated ions, dissolved metal sulfide complexes, and particulate metal sulfides. The sum of the dissolved species is termed total dissolved sulfide (TDS). In addition to the hydrolysis of carbonyl sulfide, it has been speculated that phytoplankton may produce TDS. We present results from preliminary culture studies which demonstrate that phytoplankton produce TDS and particulate acid-volatile sulfide (pAVS). The phylogenetic order of TDS + pAVS production (per unit cell volume) for the oceanic species examined is Synechococcus sp. > Emiliania huxleyi ≈ Pyramimonas obovata > Thalassiosira oceanica. Moreover, …

A 3-yr study in Lake Michigan has shown a 27 mmol P m-2 increase in the mass of total P (TP) in the water during spring when the lake is mixed from surface to sediment. This value is an order of magnitude greater than the annual P input from external sources. TP changed in concert with increases in chlorophyll a and organic N and decreases in nitrate and soluble Si. The concentration of soluble reactive PO4-3 (SRP) remained relatively constant throughout the study. We hypothesize that the SRP concentration is maintained by a chemical equilibrium with calcium-phosphate …

Populations of the temperate seagrass, Zostera marina L. (eelgrass), often exist as discontinuous beds in estuaries, harbors, and bays where they can reproduce sexually or vegetatively through clonal propagation. We examined the genetic structure of three geographically and morphologically distinct populations from central California (Elkhorn Slough, Tomales Bay, and Del Monte Beach), using multilocus restriction fragment length polymorphisms (DNA fingerprints). Within-population genetic similarity (Sw) values for the three eelgrass populations ranged from 0.44 to 0.68. The Tomales Bay population located in an undisturbed, littoral site possessed a within-population genetic similarity (Sw = 0.44) that was significantly lower …

Modeling Daily Production Of Aquatic Macrophytes From Irradiance Measurements: A Comparative Analysis, Richard C. Zimmerman, Alejandro C. Pasini, Randall S. Alberte
OES Faculty Publications
The importance of submerged aquatic macrophytes to coastal ecosystems has generated a need for knowledge of minimum light levels that will support the maintenance and restoration of healthy populations. Our goals were (1) to evaluate the sensitivity to natural, non-sinusoidal fluctuations in irradiance I of analytical integration techniques for calculating daily carbon gain, (2) to evaluate the Hsat (the daily period of I-saturated photosynthesis) model of daily production relative to models based on instantaneous photosynthesis vs irradiance (P vs I) and (3) to provide some guidance for the temporal density of irradiance data required for accurate estimation of …

Contribution Of Zooplankton Lipids To The Flux Of Organic Matter In The Northern Adriatic Sea, Mirjana Najdek, Staša Puškarić, Alexander B. Bochdansky
OES Faculty Publications
Analyses of particulate material collected by sediment traps moored at a location in the northern Adriatic Sea in 1991 revealed the presence of zooplankton fatty acids, even though zooplankton and other 'swimmers' killed by the trap's preservative were carefully removed. Laboratory experiments were conducted to (1) prove the existence of zooplankton lipids within fecal pellets, (2) exclude the possibility of incomplete separation of swimmers and other material as eventual contamination with polyunsaturated fatty acids in fecal pellets, (3) evaluate the importance of zooplankton lipids to mass flux and (4) reveal the mechanisms which lead to excretion of undigested organic matter, …

The Oceanographer's Toolkit: Oceanatlas And Atlast, Larry P. Atkinson
CCPO Publications
Most of us spend a great deal of time looking at data, visualizing it in our mind, and interpreting it for others. I am sure we all have also often realized how much time we spend on the unproductive part of these tasks. How often have you said, “I could have done this faster by hand!” I looked at two free software packages, OceanAtlas (OA) and Atlast, with success, but I wondered what longtime users thought of them. OceanAtlas is for the Mac and Atlast for the PC. Both have extensive data visualization capability and both come with large datasets: …

Modeling Oyster Populations. Iv. Rates Of Mortality, Population Crashes, And Management, E. N. Powell, J. M. Klinck, E. E. Hofmann, S. M. Ray
CCPO Publications
A time-dependent energy-flow model was used to examine how mortality affects oyster populations over the latitudinal gradient from Galveston Bay, Texas, to Chesapeake Bay, Virginia. Simulations using different mortality rates showed that mortality is required for market-site oysters to be a component of the population's size-frequency distribution; otherwise a population of stunted individuals results. As mortality extends into the juvenile sizes, the population's size frequency shifts toward the larger sizes. In many cases adults increase despite a decrease in overall population abundance. Simulations, in which the timing of mortality varied, showed that oyster populations are more susceptible to population declines …

Modeling Oyster Populations Ii. Adult Size And Reproductive Effort, E. E. Hofmann, J. M. Klinck, E. N. Powell, S. Boyles, M. Ellis
CCPO Publications
A time-dependent model of energy flow in post-settlement oyster populations is used to examine the factors that influence adult size and reproductive effort in a particular habitat, Galveston Bay, Texas, and in habitats that extend from Laguna Madre, Texas to Chesapeake Bay. The simulated populations show that adult size and reproductive effort are determined by the allocation of net production to somatic or reproductive tissue development and the rate of food acquisition, both of which are temperature dependent. For similar food conditions, increased temperature reduces the allocation of net production to somatic tissue and increases the rate of food acquisition. …

Despite a wealth of information on the growth and population dynamics of sub-adult and adult Caribbean spiny lobsters (Panulirus argus), there is far less information about younger juveniles under natural conditions. Here we describe growth and population dynamics of juvenile spiny lobsters (12-68 mm carapace length, CL) that we have studied for 14 months (October 1988-December 1989) using mark-recapture techniques in a hardbottom community in Florida Bay, Florida. We also monitored the supply of postlarvae into the region in 1988 and 1989 using Witham-type surface collectors in an effort to link peak periods of settlement of postlarvae with subsequent cohorts …

Subunit Interactions Of Recombinant Hiv-1 Reverse Transcriptase With Mutations At L289, Jacquelyn R. Smith
Subunit Interactions Of Recombinant Hiv-1 Reverse Transcriptase With Mutations At L289, Jacquelyn R. Smith
Theses and Dissertations in Biomedical Sciences
Reverse transcriptase (RT) is a dimeric enzyme required for replication of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). If the subunits of the RT dimer are dissociated, the enzyme is no longer active; therefore, identification of subunit binding sites could lead to potential targets for antiviral therapy. In order to identify where subunit binding of RT occurs, mutations were made at leucine (L) 289, a residue believed to be involved in dimerization through hydrophobic interactions with other leucines. L289 is the central leucine of a leucine repeat sequence which resembles a leucine zipper protein-DNA binding motif. Two mutations, leucine to arginine (L289R) …

Landfill Leachate Production And Gas Generation Numerical Model, John Edward Riester Jr.
Landfill Leachate Production And Gas Generation Numerical Model, John Edward Riester Jr.
Civil & Environmental Engineering Theses & Dissertations
Numerous processes occur in landfills which lend themselves to modeling. Many of the processes are mutually interdependent. An unsteady numerical model is developed combining the major processes. The three-dimensional moisture transport equations and boundary conditions are solved using an implicit finite difference scheme. The boundaries are determined through a two-dimensional runoff model for the landfill surface and a one-dimensional leachate liner flow model at the bottom of the landfill. The runoff model accounts for evapotranspiration, runoff, infiltration, and leachate recirculation. Richard's equation is solved for saturated and unsaturated vertical flows and Darcy's Equation is solved for lateral flow between adjacent …
Electrodermal Activity As A Function Of Name Stimulus Match And Facial Familiarity, Donald Cherry
Electrodermal Activity As A Function Of Name Stimulus Match And Facial Familiarity, Donald Cherry
Psychology Theses & Dissertations
The present experiment examines the relationship between name stimulus match and facial familiarity using electrodermal activity (EDA) as a dependent measure. Twenty male and 20 female undergraduate students from Old Dominion University were used as subjects. A within-subjects design allowed subjects in the experimental conditions to view familiar written names and faces which varied on the dimension of naming (name-face pairings). Three combinations of naming conditions were incorporated: (1) match, (2) mismatch, and (3) no name. As a control, subjects experienced the same naming conditions, but the names and faces were unfamiliar. Results based on EDA amplitudes revealed that familiar …
