The Innovation Paradox: How Innovation Products Threaten The Innovation Process, Scott Francisco
The Innovation Paradox: How Innovation Products Threaten The Innovation Process, Scott Francisco
Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture
Innovation is a growing trend and real concern for the economy, environment, human health and national security. Innovation outputs are prolific, while continuous research advances strategies for innovation success. Little if any research, however, connects the products>/i> and the process of innovation, and explores the impact each is having on the other. This paper proposes that the products of innovation today, particularly ICT devices, networks, databases and analytics, are themselves attacking the foundations of innovation process and skills. Research on these core innovation skills, creativity, risk-taking and mental development find them best cultivated in a hands-on, socio-spatial environments. This …
Literary Quests In Sachar's Holes: A Middle & High School Game For Literary Learning, John V. Knapp
Literary Quests In Sachar's Holes: A Middle & High School Game For Literary Learning, John V. Knapp
Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture
Gaming is a heuristically useful alternative in the literature classroom to such pedagogies as whole-group class discussion, worksheets, and small group arguments. By asking students to play the game titled, Literary Quests, after finishing Louis Sachar's novel, Holes, the teacher employs his/her students' ready-made interest in the computer and board games to the tasks of learning how to read literature. Based on student pairs questioning one another in competitive fashion, quiz-show style, this game includes sets of increasingly difficult literary questions about the novel, and a writing component aimed at student expressiveness concerned both with their understanding of …
Maturing International Cooperation To Address The Cyberspace Attack Attribution Problem, Jeff J. Mcneil
Maturing International Cooperation To Address The Cyberspace Attack Attribution Problem, Jeff J. Mcneil
Graduate Program in International Studies Theses & Dissertations
One of the most significant challenges to deterring attacks in cyberspace is the difficulty of identifying and attributing attacks to specific state or non-state actors. The lack of technical detection capability moves the problem into the legal realm; however, the lack of domestic and international cyberspace legislation makes the problem one of international cooperation. Past assessments have led to collective paralysis pending improved technical and legal advancements. This paper demonstrates, however, that any plausible path to meaningful defense in cyberspace must include a significant element of international cooperation and regime formation.
The analytical approach diverges from past utilitarian-based assessments to …
Cd1d-Dependent B-Cell Help By Nk-Like T Cells Leads To Enhanced And Sustained Production Of Bacillus Anthracis Lethal Toxin-Neutralizing Antibodies, T. Scott Devera, Lindsay M. Aye, Gillian A. Lang, Sunil K. Joshi, Jimmy D. Ballard, Mark L. Lang
Cd1d-Dependent B-Cell Help By Nk-Like T Cells Leads To Enhanced And Sustained Production Of Bacillus Anthracis Lethal Toxin-Neutralizing Antibodies, T. Scott Devera, Lindsay M. Aye, Gillian A. Lang, Sunil K. Joshi, Jimmy D. Ballard, Mark L. Lang
Bioelectrics Publications
The current Bacillus anthracis vaccine consists largely of protective antigen (PA), the protein of anthrax toxin that mediates entry of edema factor (EF) or lethal factor (LF) into cells. PA induces protective antibody (Ab)-mediated immunity against Bacillus anthracis but has limited efficacy and duration. We previously demonstrated that activation of CD1d-restricted natural killer-like T cells (NKT) with a CD1d-binding glycolipid led to enhanced Ab titers specific for foreign antigen (Ag). We therefore tested the hypothesis that activation of NKT cells with the CD1d ligand (alpha-galactosylceramide [alpha-GC]) at the time of immunization improves PA-specific Ab responses. We observed that alpha-GC enhanced …

The Ontogeny Of Muscle Structure And Locomotory Function In The Long-Finned Squid Doryteuthis Pealeii, J. T. Thompson, I. K. Bartol, A. E. Baksi, P. S. Krueger
Biological Sciences Faculty Publications
Understanding the extent to which changes in muscle form and function underlie ontogenetic changes in locomotory behaviors and performance is important in understanding the evolution of musculoskeletal systems and also the ecology of different life stages. We explored ontogenetic changes in the structure, myosin heavy chain (MHC) expression and contractile properties of the circular muscles that provide power for jet locomotion in the long-finned squid Doryteuthis pealeii. The circular muscle fibers of newly hatched paralarvae had different sizes, shapes, thick filament lengths, thin: thick filament ratio, myofilament organization and sarcoplasmic reticulum (SR) distribution than those of adults. Viewed in …
The Effects Of Cocaine And Ecstasy On Cardiac Myocytes And The Intact Myocardium, David A. Tiangco
The Effects Of Cocaine And Ecstasy On Cardiac Myocytes And The Intact Myocardium, David A. Tiangco
Theses and Dissertations in Biomedical Sciences
Cocaine and ecstasy are widely used illicit drugs. Both drugs have undergone intense scrutiny as information regarding their side-effects has become available. One important yet incomplete area of investigation pertains to their effects on the heart. The purpose of the current studies was to test the hypothesis that exposure to cocaine or ecstasy will adversely affect cellular homeostasis and normal heart function. Cultured cardiac myocytes (H9c2) and New Zealand White rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus) were used to measure the responses to various concentrations of cocaine or ecstasy at both the cellular and intact organ system levels. We observed that cocaine and …

A Phenomenological Exploration Of School Counselors' Conceptualization And Implementation Of Multicultural Competence, Jasmine Knight
A Phenomenological Exploration Of School Counselors' Conceptualization And Implementation Of Multicultural Competence, Jasmine Knight
Counseling & Human Services Theses & Dissertations
School counselors need multicultural competence to implement comprehensive school counseling programs that promote the academic achievement of all students. Prior research demonstrates that school counselors have reported high levels of multicultural competence. However, there is no evidence that this self-perceived competence translates into practice. The purpose of this phenomenological study was to explore the lived experiences of how practicing professional school counselors conceptualize multicultural competence and how they implement it into their work. To explore this topic, 12 practicing school counselors from a southeastern, urban school district participated in individual interviews, focus groups, and documents reviews. A research team analyzed …
Interisland Variability Of Dune Plant Community Structure On Virginia's Barrier Islands, Justin K. Shafer
Interisland Variability Of Dune Plant Community Structure On Virginia's Barrier Islands, Justin K. Shafer
Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations
The barrier islands of the Virginia Coast Reserve LTER site provide an opportunity to study interisland variability of dune plant communities. My research focused on the variation in biomass and diversity of communities among islands and dune positions. Grassy dunes of young, intermediate and old age were sampled on Smith, Hog, and Parramore Islands. Aboveground biomass was obtained from harvest plots, and roots were extracted from cores. Data were collected on depth to groundwater and total soil nitrogen. Variation in mean aboveground biomass was evident among the islands with the highest values on Hog Island, followed by Smith, then Parramore …
Rao's Quadratic Entropy And Some New Applications, Yueqin Zhao
Rao's Quadratic Entropy And Some New Applications, Yueqin Zhao
Mathematics & Statistics Theses & Dissertations
Many problems in statistical inference are formulated as testing the diversity of populations. The entropy functions measure the similarity of a distribution function to the uniform distribution and hence can be used as a measure of diversity. Rao (1982a) proposed the concept of quadratic entropy. Its concavity property makes the decomposition similar to ANOVA for categorical data feasible. In this thesis, after reviewing the properties and providing a modification to quadratic entropy, various applications of quadratic entropy are explored. First, analysis of quadratic entropy with the suggested modification to analyze the contingency table data is explored. Then its application to …
Body Size And Growth Patterns Of Microtus Pennsylvanicus (Ord.) In Chesapeake, Virginia, Sara E. Bell
Body Size And Growth Patterns Of Microtus Pennsylvanicus (Ord.) In Chesapeake, Virginia, Sara E. Bell
Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations
From Dec 2002-Feb 2008, a capture-mark-release study was conducted on 2 Chesapeake, Virginia populations of meadow voles (Microtus pennsylvanicus). The study sites were effectively 1 ha grids in old fields. Two modified live Fitch-type traps were placed at 12.5 m intervals on grids that were trapped for 3 days each month. In northern North America, voles have distinct breeding cohorts (spring and autumn), experience autumn and winter weight loss, demonstrate both delayed growth and sexual maturation in autumn-born young, have lifespans less than 15 weeks, and average about 35-50 g as adults. Chesapeake voles bred year-round, experienced no …
Inter-Island Variability In Above And Belowground Plant Biomass In Interior Marshes On The Virginia Barrier Islands, Staci B. Blecha
Inter-Island Variability In Above And Belowground Plant Biomass In Interior Marshes On The Virginia Barrier Islands, Staci B. Blecha
Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations
The Virginia Coast Reserve's Long Term Ecological Research (LTER) site is of great interest because the barrier islands have been migrating, rapidly at times, and are exceptionally dynamic. The barrier islands have tidal saltwater marshes on the lagoon side and freshwater marshes on the island interiors. In these interior marshes on North Hog Island, South Smith Island, and North Parramore Island, salinity and depth to water table were measured to determine if these factors were influencing biomass and biomass allocation patterns in the marsh. Hog Island had the freshest interior marshes (0 and 0.7 ppm), and the most diverse (H'=0.84 …
Human Osteoblast Proliferation In Culture Following A Nanosecond Pulsed Electric Field (Nspef), Leonard Joseph Carinci Jr.
Human Osteoblast Proliferation In Culture Following A Nanosecond Pulsed Electric Field (Nspef), Leonard Joseph Carinci Jr.
Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations
Osteoblasts are mononucleate bone forming cells responsible for the deposition of new bone. Application of mechanical stress on bone reveals its ability to produce and release electric potentials across the cell membrane called piezoelectricity. The electric potentials produced in response to mechanical stress may have a direct correlation on osseous cells and the signaling pathways that regulate proliferation. Nanosecond pulsed electric fields (nsPEFs) are high intensity, ultrashort pulses which have the ability to maintain the integrity of the cell membrane by avoiding traditional electroporation. We delivered 8 nsPEFs (0.5 Hz) of a 25 kV/cm or 35 kV/cm electric field strength …
Genre, Database, And The Anatomy Of The Digital Archive, Elizabeth J. Vincelette
Genre, Database, And The Anatomy Of The Digital Archive, Elizabeth J. Vincelette
English Theses & Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to define shared characteristics of literary digital archives, specifically to explore how conceptual and structural qualities of such archives express generic qualities. In order to describe digital media such as database or digital archives, scholars resort to metaphors, and this study offers the metaphor of anatomy as a generic inscription with historical and methodological implications. The definition of the anatomy genre draws from Northrop Frye's in Anatomy of Criticism, in which Frye describes how anatomies are characterized by proliferating lists, the mixing of prose and non-prose forms, and self-reflexivity--under the guise of knowledge …
Molecular Characterization Of The Soluble Fraction Of Atmospheric Particulate Matter Obtained By Chemical Oxidation With Nitric Acid, Amanda Susan Priest
Molecular Characterization Of The Soluble Fraction Of Atmospheric Particulate Matter Obtained By Chemical Oxidation With Nitric Acid, Amanda Susan Priest
Chemistry & Biochemistry Theses & Dissertations
The availability of information regarding the composition of ambient atmospheric particulate matter and the transformations that these compounds may undergo upon atmospheric transit is surprisingly absent. Electrospray ionization Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry is used in this study to rapidly evaluate the composition of the water-soluble organic fraction of standard and collected atmospheric particulate matter samples, and the changes that these mixtures undergo upon oxidation with nitric acid. The standard samples include representative particulate matter collected over the course of a year in Washington, D.C. and particulate matter from the exhaust of a diesel-powered engine. The collected sample …
The Way Of Sinners, Mary Westbrook
The Way Of Sinners, Mary Westbrook
English Theses & Dissertations
The Way of Sinners is a collection of short stories united by place and themes. The stories, most of which are told in first-person, take place in fictional and real towns around Virginia, in Tidewater, the Shenandoah Valley and the western part of the commonwealth, near Blacksburg. The stories concern women and girls who feel they have failed, who fear they cannot be redeemed. The characters want to be restored to dignity — to be whole again, good. Human nature stands in their way. The characters are keenly aware of slights and sins committed by and against them, and as …
Hybrid Intelligent Optimization Methods For Engineering Problems, Yasin Volkan Pehlivanoglu
Hybrid Intelligent Optimization Methods For Engineering Problems, Yasin Volkan Pehlivanoglu
Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations
The purpose of optimization is to obtain the best solution under certain conditions. There are numerous optimization methods because different problems need different solution methodologies; therefore, it is difficult to construct patterns. Also mathematical modeling of a natural phenomenon is almost based on differentials. Differential equations are constructed with relative increments among the factors related to yield. Therefore, the gradients of these increments are essential to search the yield space. However, the landscape of yield is not a simple one and mostly multi-modal. Another issue is differentiability. Engineering design problems are usually nonlinear and they sometimes exhibit discontinuous derivatives for …
A Decision Making Construct For Complex Situations, Van Edward Brewer
A Decision Making Construct For Complex Situations, Van Edward Brewer
Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Theses & Dissertations
The uncertainty inherently associated with complexity challenges decision-making processes, indicating a need for a construct for decision making in complex situations. A review of the literature on systems, complexity, and paradigms indicates that such a construct must be internally consistent with well-defined philosophical foundations and further that systems and complexity (as used in complex situations) are not necessarily internally consistent with traditional philosophical foundations. Therefore, a decision making construct for complex situations requires research into different foundations. This research addresses these gaps, deriving axiological and methodological components based on a set of principles consistent with the ontology and epistemology of …
The Influence Of Mechanical Circulation On Water Column Stability And Dissolved Oxygen In Stratified Lakes, Paal Engebrigtsen
The Influence Of Mechanical Circulation On Water Column Stability And Dissolved Oxygen In Stratified Lakes, Paal Engebrigtsen
Civil & Environmental Engineering Theses & Dissertations
Surface circulators have been used in wastewater and industrial lagoons for many years, but only recently have they been designed for lakes and reservoirs as a water quality management tool. Their relatively low capital investment and operational costs make them an attractive chemical free option for ameliorating the symptoms of eutrophication. Little research has been conducted on their effectiveness in impacting water quality. Today many lake managers are waiting for independent research on surface circulators' performance before installing such systems.
The Occoquan Reservoir was the primary site for a study conducted to examine the influence of surface circulation on water …

Combining Molecular And Imaging Biomarkers To Enhance Maldi Biomarker Analysis, Ayyappa Chowdary Vadlamudi
Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations
This thesis presents a three-step method to predict prostate cancer (PCa) regions on biopsy tissue samples based on high confident, low resolution PCa regions marked by a pathologist. First, a prediction model is designed to predict PCa regions using matrix-assisted laser desorption mass spectrometry (MALDI-MS) tissue imaging data from one prostate tissue slice. Second, a texture analysis technique is applied to a high magnification optical image for the same purpose from an adjacent tissue slice. Finally, those two results are fused to obtain the PCa regions that will assist MALDI imaging biomarker analysis. Experiments show that the texture analysis based …
Multi-Element Airfoil Optimization Using Computational Fluid Dynamics, Mustafa Kubilay Ictuzer
Multi-Element Airfoil Optimization Using Computational Fluid Dynamics, Mustafa Kubilay Ictuzer
Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations
High-lift systems are frequently used on commercial transport aircrafts to obtain low speed performance, in terms of take-off and landing field lengths and approach speed. To maximize the take-off and landing performance within the critical restrictions required by the new generation transport wing designs, enhanced high-lift technologies are needed. Moreover, the economic realities faced by the airlines require a design that is mechanically simple and effective. These facts lead us to the optimization of the high lift systems.
Optimizing a high-lift system improves an aircraft's take-off and landing performance. The weight of the system, the advantages and the disadvantages all …
A Gis Analysis Of The Environmental Variables Related To Rift Valley Fever Outbreaks, Jacqueline Florette Jackson
A Gis Analysis Of The Environmental Variables Related To Rift Valley Fever Outbreaks, Jacqueline Florette Jackson
Health Services Research Dissertations
Rift Valley fever is a mosquito-borne disease that causes widespread febrile illness and mortality in domestic animals as well as humans (Gaff, 2007). Rift Valley fever virus was first isolated in 1931 (Daubney, 1931), and since then, outbreaks have occurred in sub-Saharan Africa, southern Africa, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Yemen and Madagascar, proving it to be a virus able to invade ecologically diverse regions (Gaff, 2007). The potential introduction of Rift Valley fever into the United States suggests the potential for human infection and major economic disruption. It is important to understand the role environmental variables have played in historical outbreaks …
A Test Of The Area Of Refuge Hypothesis In Indo-Pacific Marine Biogeography, Jonnell C. Sanciangco
A Test Of The Area Of Refuge Hypothesis In Indo-Pacific Marine Biogeography, Jonnell C. Sanciangco
Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations
Many hypotheses have been proposed to explain the marine biogeographic patterns of species richness of the Indo-Pacific. One of these hypotheses suggests that available habitat area is the main predictor of species richness. This is the basis for the area of refuge hypothesis that attempts to explain the global maxima of species richness found in the Coral Triangle, the area encompassing mostly the Philippines, Indonesia, and Malaysia. This species-area effect also has habitat heterogeneity as a potential component. The purpose of this study is to test the effects of habitat availability predictors, such as shallow water area and coastline length …

Electrically Mediated Delivery Of Plasmid Dna To The Skin, Using A Multielectrode Array, Richard Heller, Yolmari Criz, Loree C. Heller, Richard A. Gilbert, Mark J. Jaroszeski
Bioelectrics Publications
The easy accessibility of skin makes it an excellent target for gene transfer protocols. To take full advantage of skin as a target for gene transfer, it is important to establish an efficient and reproducible delivery system. Electroporation is a strong candidate to meet this delivery criterion. Electroporation of the skin is a simple, direct, in vivo method to deliver genes for therapy. Previously, delivery to the skin was performed by means of applicators with relatively large distances between electrodes, resulting in significant muscle stimulation and pain. These applicators also had limitations in controlling the directionality of the applied field. …

A Habitat Model For The Detection Of Two-Lined Salamanders At C. F. Phelps Wildlife Management Area, Fauquier And Culpeper Counties, Virginia, Jay Mcghee, Michael D. Killian
Virginia Journal of Science
Aquatic salamanders represent an important component of Virginia river watersheds, but despite potential declines, few specifics are known about their habitat preferences. We surveyed the habitats of the northern two-lined salamander and collected data on an array of habitat variables associated with the species. We used a logistic regression analysis to develop a model predicting its presence or absence for a given 50m-transect. Our final model incorporated the variation in stream depth and direction of stream flow and accounted for 25% of the variation in our data. We conclude that stream depth variation is an important feature of salamander habitat …

Hierarchical Linear Modeling Of Drinking To Cope With Anxiety Among College Students, Bradley Wetzell, Matthew R. Pearson, James Henson
Hierarchical Linear Modeling Of Drinking To Cope With Anxiety Among College Students, Bradley Wetzell, Matthew R. Pearson, James Henson
OUR Journal: ODU Undergraduate Research Journal
Previous research has assumed that drinking motives (reasons for drinking) remain fairly stable over time (traits). The current study examines how drinking motives of college students may vary over time (states). Weekly measures were completed by 125 undergraduates at Old Dominion University, which examined how average levels of anxiety interacted with anxiety coping motives to influence drinking. Using Hierarchical Linear Modeling, it was found that anxiety coping motives were less predictive for participants with elevated average anxiety levels, as opposed to participants with normal to low anxiety levels. Implications and possible explanations are discussed.
