Reactive Attachment Disorder: Challenges For Early Identification And Intervention Within The Schools, Kimberly K. Floyd, Peggy Hester, Harold C. Griffin, Jeannie Golden, Lora Lee Smith Canter
Communication Disorders & Special Education Faculty Publications
Attachment is of key importance in childhood development. The quality of attachment relationship between the child and parent/primary caregiver may have an effect on the child and future relationships and social success (Rubin, Bukowski, & Parker, 1998). When a child fails to bond with a caring adult, attachment becomes disordered and children may not be able to bond appropriately or at all with other people. This inability to relate and connect with others may disrupt or arrest not only children's social development, but also their overall development. The purpose of this review is to synthesize information and research on characteristics, …

Technology-Mediated Instruction In Distance Education And Teacher Preparation In Special Education, Lyndal M. Bullock, Robert A. Gable, J. Darrell Mohr
Communication Disorders & Special Education Faculty Publications
In this article, the authors examine the literature on distance education and offer a brief chronology of its past-to-present development, with special attention to the evolution of technology-mediated instruction. They document some of the major trends related to both theoretical and practical aspects of distance education. In particular, they look at the significance of the design of instruction and the importance of preserving faculty-student communication. Next, they look at the challenges as well as opportunities that distance education affords students, faculty, and institutions of higher education. Finally, the authors summarize what they believe to be major issues to be resolved …
The New York Intellectuals, The Johnson-Forest Tendency, And The Crisis Of Public Intellectuals, Manuel Yang
The New York Intellectuals, The Johnson-Forest Tendency, And The Crisis Of Public Intellectuals, Manuel Yang
Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture
For too long now the very notion of a public intellectual relies on a missionary model, of going out to the masses with a view to enlightening them. The essay analyzes past and present praxis which would abolish this approach altogether, based on close readings of the experiences of the New York Intellectuals and the Forest-Johnson Tendency.
Reading Forward' From The Left: An Interview With Barbara Foley, Joseph G. Ramsey
Reading Forward' From The Left: An Interview With Barbara Foley, Joseph G. Ramsey
Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture
Barbara Clare Foley teaches in the English Department at Rutgers University-Newark Campus and has written extensively about literary radicalism, African American literature, Marxist theory, and the politics of the academy. Her 1993 study Radical Representation: Politics and Form in U.S. Proletarian Fiction 1929-1940, has exerted considerable influence on emerging scholars of left-wing literature. Her most recent books are Spectres of 1919: Class and Nation in the Making of the New Negro (2003) and Wrestling with Prometheus: Ralph Ellison, the Left, and the Making of "Invisible Man", her forthcoming work, which she discusses below. Foley is also a member …

Posthumanism Of The New Intermedia: The Cellphone Named Desire, Tomek Kitlinski, Joe Lockard, Stéphane Symons
Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture
[First paragraph]
The mobile phone networks promise global communication, wholeness, plethora, safety, and romance. Instead, cellphones silence us. In a repressive pseudo-democracy, we are silenced.

Defending Left Pedagogy: U.S. Communist Schools Fight Back Against The Sacb . . . And Lose (1953-1957), Marvin E. Gettleman
Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture
[First paragraph]
During the 1940s and 1950s the U.S. Communist Party upgraded and broadened its adult education schools, abandoning or ideologically modifying the militant pedagogical centers that had sprung up during the 1920s and 1930s in many American cities. In New York the transformation was complicated as two Party schools (the Workers School and the School for Democracy) merged with each other to create in 1943 the Thomas Jefferson School of Social Science. The California Labor School in San Francisco was the West Coast counterpart of the Jefferson School. [2] I shall try to argue later in this paper that …

Before Moynihan: Stanley Elkins's Slavery(1959), Psychoanalytic Discourse And The Cold War, Mark J. Goodman
Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture
[First paragraph]
Drawing on the neglected connection between racial politics and the Cold War, Mary Dudziak (379, quoted in Mullen, 378-380) emphasizes that the Justice Department in this period urged an end to segregation "because of its use in Soviet propaganda". But if the Brown decision (1954) served that need, broadcasting abroad America's democratic intentions - and perhaps stimulating, inadvertently, the Southern movement - it proved otherwise ineffectual. Despite the long and thorough legal preparation by NAACP and other groups, through the mid-1960s, Southern schools remained racially divided; and segregation in the North was not challenged until a decade later. …
The Name Of The Mother: Modernity, Maternity, And The (Bi)Racialized Failure Of Relational Female Subjectivity In Nella Larsen's Quicksand, Yolanda M. Manora
The Name Of The Mother: Modernity, Maternity, And The (Bi)Racialized Failure Of Relational Female Subjectivity In Nella Larsen's Quicksand, Yolanda M. Manora
Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture
The major ideological and political agenda of the aesthetic movement that was the Harlem Renaissance, namely the (re)negotiation of African American subjectivity/identity and social place, was worked out by African American Modernist writers, in part, through discourses and dialectics related to maternity. This essay is an examination of the present absence of the maternal in Nella Larsen's Quicksand and the negotiation of the maternal feminine as a principle in both the construction of female subjectivity in the novel and within themodernist/Harlem Renaissance project of cultural revision.
John Dos Passos, Mike Gold, And The Birth Of The New Masses, Rich Hancuff
John Dos Passos, Mike Gold, And The Birth Of The New Masses, Rich Hancuff
Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture
This article uses the work of two New Masses editors, John Dos Passos, and Mike Gold, to examine the competing visions for the future of the then-new magazine, including the concepts of audience, contributors, and subject matter, within a framework of widespread anti-immigration sentiment in the United States and a large immigrant working class. This seemingly insular literary debate between early leaders of the magazine echoes in the culture-at-large, as Dos Passos' involvement in the Sacco-Vanzetti case reveals. Dos Passos' rhetoric works to assimilate recent immigrants to the prevailing discourse of American exceptionalism, while Gold's vision seeks to "internationalize" recent …

L'America: Woman, Artist, Landscape - Frida Kahlo, Georgia O'Keeffe And Emily Carr, Painters As Theorists Of The National Imaginary, Paula Rabinowitz
Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture
Visual artists are open to assessment as progressive public intellectuals. Drawing on three case studies – Frida Kahlo, Georgia O’Keeffe and Emily Carr – this essay considers the strategies of rhetoric and (self)-representation used to position the artist as a personification of a range of political and social identities, including historically specific forms of nationalism.
Intellectual Influences On The New Left In America: C Wright Mills And Herbert Marcuse, James Panton
Intellectual Influences On The New Left In America: C Wright Mills And Herbert Marcuse, James Panton
Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture
The commonalities between C. Wright Mills and Herbert Marcuse – both social theorists who enjoyed a considerable public audience – are charted in this essay. Despite apparent fundamental differences over Marxism and "Big Theory", their parallel theoretical engagements with the linked questions of post-war political agency and the impact of U.S. mass media, are mapped out. A specific limitation of their "New Left" philosophies and politics is each thinker's problematic tendency to locate potential "freedom" in an increasingly narrow "private" sphere.
Hungry Realism: Style And Subjecthood In Meridel Le Sueur's The Girl, Amy Gentry
Hungry Realism: Style And Subjecthood In Meridel Le Sueur's The Girl, Amy Gentry
Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture
[First paragraph]
Meridel Le Sueur's 1939 novel The Girl occupies a troubled place within the history of American genres. Situated within several different subgenres—at once proletarian literature, feminist complaint, and sentimental melodrama—the novel sits comfortably in none. Written in 1939 but only published in 1978, it entered the public sphere almost forty years out of context, in a moment of radical feminism which, while it often resonated with Le Sueur's politics, could not but offer important dissonances as well. This long silence and late revision have partially obscured the book's original depiction of hunger as a force that destabilizes subjectivity …
Dirty Industrial Dawn: Alienation And Its Discontents In Harvey Swados' On The Line, Robert Niemi
Dirty Industrial Dawn: Alienation And Its Discontents In Harvey Swados' On The Line, Robert Niemi
Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture
[First paragraph]
Rankled by mid-Fifties media cant that characterized American blue-collar workers as essentially and happily middle class in situation and outlook, radical novelist/labor journalist Harvey Swados wrote an angry retort entitled "The Myth of the Happy Worker" (The Nation, August 17, 1957). Therein Swados sardonically noted that "there is one thing the worker doesn't do like the middle class: he works like a worker. The steel mill puddler does not yet sort memos; the coal miner does not yet sit in conferences; the cotton mill-hand does not yet sip martinis from his lunch box. The worker's attitude …

The New Yorker's 'Hiroshima': Tiffany Diamonds, Caribbean Cruises, And The Atomic Bomb, Christopher D. Craig
The New Yorker's 'Hiroshima': Tiffany Diamonds, Caribbean Cruises, And The Atomic Bomb, Christopher D. Craig
Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture
This article explores the limitations of John Hersey's influential account of the effects of the dropping of the atomic bomb on Japan. This is done by foregrounding the consumerist iconography of New Yorker advertisements, which ran alongside "Hiroshima" in August 1946, as a symbol of the contradictions of post-war liberalism. Hersey’s journalistic ethic and aesthetic of "immediacy" runs up against a dominant discourse capable of framing even socially critical sentiment as but one more commodity.

Public Recreation And Neighborhood Sense Of Community: An Exploration Of A Hypothesized Relationship, Svetoslav D. Gueorguiev, Edwin Gómez, Eddie Hill
Human Movement Studies & Special Education Faculty Publications
This study explores the relationship between park attributes (perceived safety and perceived benefits) and their relationship to sense of community in urban neighborhoods. The study finds that the perception of benefits derived from park use has a direct relationship with sense of community, and that park safety is indirectly related to sense of community, with the perception of park benefits mediating the relationship between park safety and sense of community. Theoretical and practical considerations are discussed.

The Relationships Among Age, Physical Activity, And Working Memory, Ellen M. Carpenter
The Relationships Among Age, Physical Activity, And Working Memory, Ellen M. Carpenter
Psychology Theses & Dissertations
As our population ages, determining exogenous factors that may offset cognitive decline become increasingly important. The primary goal of the present study was to determine whether older individuals who engage in regular physical activity demonstrate superior working memory performance relative to older sedentary individuals. Forty young (20 active, 20 sedentary) and forty older (20 active, 20 sedentary) individuals engaged in cognitive measures of information processing speed, inhibitory function, and verbal and visuospatial working memory. Age differences in recall were found for verbal and visuospatial span tasks, as well as for recall reaction time on verbal and visuospatial n-back tasks, and …

The Non-Cognitive Attributes Of First-Year At-Risk Students Who Are Academically Successful And Retained At Old Dominion University, Tisha M. Paredes
Educational Leadership & Workforce Development Theses & Dissertations
With a decrease in state and federal funding, higher educational institutions need to focus on retaining students. However, student retention is a multifaceted problem that requires varied solutions. Traditional measures, or cognitive measures, of student success, such as pre-college knowledge (SAT and high school grade point average) have not explained how higher education institutions retained students, especially students who are considered at-risk. Since the nature of student retention is idiosyncratic, research needs to focus on other measures, such as students' non-cognitive factors. Tinto has outlined non-cognitive factors, such as pre-college characteristics, goals and commitments, and institutional experiences, which influence students' …
The Relationship Between Rural Middle School Student Mathematics Achievement And Classroom Sense Of Community, John E. Donlan
The Relationship Between Rural Middle School Student Mathematics Achievement And Classroom Sense Of Community, John E. Donlan
Educational Leadership & Workforce Development Theses & Dissertations
This study addressed the need for more information about academic growth and achievement in mathematics, and how it relates to sense of community in middle school settings. This was accomplished by applying the Classroom and School Community Inventory (CSCI) construct (Rovai, Wighting, & Lucking, 2004) to all three middle schools in one rural county. The CSCI was utilized to measure sense of community in mathematics classes to determine if differences existed between grades six, seven, and eight, including gender subgroups, among the three middle schools in the same rural county. This study examined academic growth in the subject of mathematics …
Shifts And Continuities: The Ideological Evolution Of José Rodríguez Feo, Robert Lesman
Shifts And Continuities: The Ideological Evolution Of José Rodríguez Feo, Robert Lesman
Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture
Cuban editor, translator and literary critic José Rodríguez Feo (1920-93) has received insufficient attention from scholars of Cuban cultural history. Though he was wealthy, fluent in English, and educated at Harvard, he decided to stay in Cuba and commit to Castro's revolutionary cultural agenda. Though this fact is surprising, the seeds of Rodríguez Feo's Marxist commitments can be seen in the early stages of his career, when he was co-editor of the literary magazine Orígenes (1944-56). Rodríguez Feo's knowledge of U.S. history instilled in him a distaste for the injustices of imperialism. His education and fluency in English did not …
Hindsight Bias In Insight And Mathematical Problem Solving: Evidence Of Different Reconstruction Mechanisms For Metacognitive Versus Situational Judgments, Ivan K. Ash, Jennifer Wiley
Hindsight Bias In Insight And Mathematical Problem Solving: Evidence Of Different Reconstruction Mechanisms For Metacognitive Versus Situational Judgments, Ivan K. Ash, Jennifer Wiley
Psychology Faculty Publications
This article presents two experiments that used insight and mathematical problems to investigate whether different factors would affect hindsight bias on metacognitive and situational judgments. In both studies, participants initially rated their likelihood of solving each problem within a certain amount of time (metacognitive judgments) and rated the importance of each component of the problem for finding the solution (situational judgments). Next, participants attempted to solve each problem. In Experiment 1, all participants were given solution feedback information, but in Experiment 2, participants were not given any solution feedback. After 1 week, participants were asked to recall their original judgments. …
Democratic Failure: Tracking The Ebb Of Democracy's Flow, 1800–2006, Sanja E. Sray
Democratic Failure: Tracking The Ebb Of Democracy's Flow, 1800–2006, Sanja E. Sray
Graduate Program in International Studies Theses & Dissertations
Scant attention has focused on the systematic study of democratic failure. This dissertation partially corrects this oversight. Tracing the roots of antidemocratic sentiment across the centuries, it first argues that the advance of institutions, fueled by underlying shifts in values and innovation in political philosophy, was key to freeing democracy from its bondage as a most disparaged form of governance. Focusing on the measurable aspects of these institutions, the study focuses on describing patterns of behavior when democracies fail. First, it shows that there have been clusters of democratic failure. These clusters, or counterwaves, find their roots in ancient antidemocratic …
Marketing First Impressions: Academic Libraries Creating Partnerships And Connections At New Student Orientations, James G. Rhoades Jr., Arianne Hartsell
Marketing First Impressions: Academic Libraries Creating Partnerships And Connections At New Student Orientations, James G. Rhoades Jr., Arianne Hartsell
Libraries Faculty & Staff Publications
Academic libraries look for successful marketing strategies to promote positive perceptions among students. To do this, librarians need to find venues and partnerships outside the library. Florida State University Libraries discovered that participating in new student orientation networking sessions creates opportunities to generate lasting first impressions among incoming freshmen and their families. After analyzing three years of successive student and family evaluations, which measured presentation rankings and attendance, the library was able to determine the utility and effectiveness of participating in the orientation program. Related literature and an analysis of the evaluations both indicate that universities and students benefit when …

[First paragraph] A review (in the pages of this journal) of a book published nearly fifty years ago may appear unusual; not unless the book has become a “classic”. Indeed, many organizational scholars (e.g, Pitelis, 2002) view it as a seminal text for the resource-based view of the firm - arguably one of the dominant theoretical perspectives in strategic management research today.
Balancing Hamiltonian And Jeffersonian Contradictions Within Organizations, Anil Nair, David Ahlstrom
Balancing Hamiltonian And Jeffersonian Contradictions Within Organizations, Anil Nair, David Ahlstrom
Management Faculty Publications
This article describes how institutions get infused with competing logics and analyzes how such competing logics might aid the design of contemporary organizations. It does so by exploring the contrasting views of American founders Alexander Hamilton and Thomas Jefferson on the issues they confronted in the years leading up to and after the United States' independence from the British. Their views have had a lasting influence on the character and efficacy of the U.S. government. Although Hamilton and Jefferson contemplated issues related to the governance of the United States, the authors argue that their writings offer insights that can be …
