Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
This practicum was designed, through a cross-age tutoring program, to increase emergent literacy skills of at-risk kindergarten children. In a structured program, the fifth and sixth grade tutors met with the tutees for 30 minutes twice a week for a three month period.
The writer administered qualitative and quantitative pretests which documented the lack of literacy development of at-risk kindergartners. The writer held workshops to train the tutors in reading and writing strategies, developed a schedule of structured activities to complete …
Developing An In-School Suspension Program In An Elementary School As An Alternative To Home-Bound Suspension, Jerry Guindon
Developing An In-School Suspension Program In An Elementary School As An Alternative To Home-Bound Suspension, Jerry Guindon
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
This practicum was developed to address the staff concerns at an elementary school of frequent out-of-school suspensions (OSS) resulting from misbehavior referrals to the principal's office. The staff felt that suspended students were often rewarded by OSS, at risk on the streets, interrupted in their schooling and that they often continued to be repeatedly suspended.
With the school principal's permission, the writer developed an in-school suspension program (ISS) which served as a better alternative to sending students home. ISS was more punitive, safer, more instructive and more rehabilitative.
Collected data over a four-month period reveal that the school principal suspended …

A Cross-Age Tutoring Program To Raise Self-Esteem In Learning Disabled, Regular And Gifted Elementary School Students, Marian J. King
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
This practicum was originally designed to provide teachers with a means of enhancing the self-esteem of learning disabled (LD) students by using them as cross-age tutors in a Kindergarten class. It was assumed that, by engaging them to help younger students, LD tutors would experience a feeling of accomplishment and self-worth, and therefore develop a sense of being capable, useful, and appreciated. It was further assumed that this more positive self-esteem would lead to a healthier social, emotional and intellectual self-perception and behavior. As the project developed, other students (regular and gifted, including whole 5th and 6th grade classes) asked …

Designing And Implementing A Development Program At Roanoke Valley Christian School., Philip H. Graybeal
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
As a ministry of Shenandoah Baptist Church, Roanoke Valley Christian Schools (RVCS), grew since its founding in 1973 to a size of 535 students (K-12) and 31 teachers. The administrative team consisted of the administrator, elementary principal, secondary principal, and part-time learning disability director.
RVCS reached a plateau in its growth pattern as seen in enrollment statistics that showed a difference of no more than 18 students during any one year from the 1983-88 mean enrollment of 535. Records indicated that development was needed in public relations and recruitment materials, facility expansion, and non-tuition funding.
During the process of the …

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
The idea of examining the initial orientation of Job Cops students had been discussed at some length by the North Carolina Department of Human Resources (NCDHR) Job Corps staff. It was of primary importance to the Department to do an investigation of this orientation, since it was directly related to the overall adjustment and satisfaction of the students, once they were actually enrolled at a particular: Job Corps center. In order to address the initial orientation, the proposed research study utilized data from several populations in the design and creation of a new formalized model orientation that alleviated disparities which …
