Genetic Mapping Of Endogenous Rd-114 Retroviral Sequences Of Domestic Cats, Roger H. Reeves, William G. Nash, Stephen J. O'Brien Oct 1985

Genetic Mapping Of Endogenous Rd-114 Retroviral Sequences Of Domestic Cats, Roger H. Reeves, William G. Nash, Stephen J. O'Brien

Biology Faculty Articles

The RD-114 family of endogenous retroviral sequences in domestic cats has been shown to consist of approximately 20 copies of genetically divergent virogenes per haploid genome. The chromosomal localization for four endogenous sequences (RDV1-4) was accomplished by correlating the occurrence of specific feline chromosomes with diagnostic viral DNA fragments in a panel of cat x rodent somatic cell hybrids. Analysis of the hybrid panel revealed that endogenous RD-114 sequences are dispersed on multiple cat chromosomes, that certain proviral segments are polymorphic with respect to the presence or absence of virus, and that a restriction fragment characteristic of inducible RD-114 resides …

Twenty-Seven Protein Polymorphisms By Two-Dimensional Electrophoresis Of Serum, Erythrocytes, And Fibroblasts In Two Pedigrees, David Goldman, Lynn R. Goldin, P. Rathnagiri, Stephen J. O'Brien, Janice A. Egeland, Carl R. Merril Sep 1985

Twenty-Seven Protein Polymorphisms By Two-Dimensional Electrophoresis Of Serum, Erythrocytes, And Fibroblasts In Two Pedigrees, David Goldman, Lynn R. Goldin, P. Rathnagiri, Stephen J. O'Brien, Janice A. Egeland, Carl R. Merril

Biology Faculty Articles

Twenty-seven independent polymorphic loci were detected by two-dimensional electrophoresis (2DE) of serum, erythrocytes, and fibroblasts in two large families and analyzed for linkage to classical genetic markers. We detected seven serum, four erythrocyte, and 17 fibroblast protein loci that exhibited charge variation in these two families and in a sample of unrelated individuals. The genetic basis of protein variants was confirmed by quantitative gene-dosage dependence and by conformance to Mendelian transmission in the two families, except for four rare variants for which transmission analysis was not possible. Linkage analysis demonstrated that each of the variants represent products of independent loci, …

Using Instruction In Sentence Combining To Improve Syntactic Maturity In Student Writing, Judith B. Willig Aug 1985

Using Instruction In Sentence Combining To Improve Syntactic Maturity In Student Writing, Judith B. Willig

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

Tenth grade students in two English Honors classes were given direct instruction on sentence combining. The goal of the program was to increase the syntactic complexity of student writing, to have them express more in each sentence.

Instruction was approached from different aspects. The students worked with two textbooks on sentence combining. They worked with sentences from the newspaper and a magazine. There were lessons in sentence combining as a means to understanding the style of two authors. Sentences combining was used as a means to encourage substantial revision of essays. Writing an abstract of the research paper was approached …

The Training And Supervision Of Practicum Students To Utilize Precision Teaching With Exceptional Children, Shelley Cindy Obrand Jul 1985

The Training And Supervision Of Practicum Students To Utilize Precision Teaching With Exceptional Children, Shelley Cindy Obrand

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

Graduate students were given the opportunity to become involved in a teacher training program as a practicum experience toward advanced degrees in elementary education, learning disabilities, emotional handicaps or reading. The major focus of the practicum dealt with the training and supervision of practicum students in utilizing precision teaching to instruct children (grades K-6) within the framework of a specialized program. The aims were to increase teachers' repertoires of instructional methods, behavioral management techniques, and to develop a training manual to have teachers utilize precision teaching.

The program contained three pre-service workshops and seven in-service workshops. The format for each …

Increasing The Mathematics Performance Of Learning Disabled Children Through Self-Monitoring Of Attention Span, Geraldine B. Newton Jun 1985

Increasing The Mathematics Performance Of Learning Disabled Children Through Self-Monitoring Of Attention Span, Geraldine B. Newton

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

A program to self-monitor attention spans for learning disabled students in grades three through six was implemented to aid them in remaining on task while in math class. A recorded “beeper” was set up to remind students to stay on task. Students marked a checksheet to indicate whether or not they were on task when the “beep” went off. The program’s aims were to help the students increase his mathematics performance as demonstrated by an increase of achievement on the math section of the Wide Range Achievement Test.

The Program consisted of a pretest, implementation of self-monitoring for 10 weeks …

A Plan To Reduce Library Book Losses, Darlene S. Craig Jun 1985

A Plan To Reduce Library Book Losses, Darlene S. Craig

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

The author researched and adapted ways to promote responsibility for library books. The program's aims were to reduce and retrieve lost library books that were reported on the inventory check and to make students, parents, and teachers aware of the problems and the importance of being responsible library users.

Introduction to the project was done in three stages. Presentations were made to staff (team) leaders who presented the plan to team members. Intercom announcements were made to the student body. Project intentions were explained to parents via the school newsletters. By the end of the project fewer books were missing …

The Identification Of Right Brain Children And The Application Of Teaching Strategies To Improve Their Academic Achievement, Barbara B. Stutes Jun 1985

The Identification Of Right Brain Children And The Application Of Teaching Strategies To Improve Their Academic Achievement, Barbara B. Stutes

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

The author identified students with a right brain dominance through surveys and questionnaires. These students' past academic records were scrutinized and on the basis of repetitive low test scores, poor social and scholastic achievement and a pattern of apathetic behavior, a target group of five students was compiled for this study. Based on their mode dominance, a series of teaching strategies were created to strengthen the dominant mode and stretch the subdominant mode. The strategies were formulated for daily implementation and were specific activities that called on reaction from either the left or right hemisphere of the brain, and the …
