Flings And Things: The Effects Of Men's Tattoos And Companions On Women's Short- And Long-Term Romantic Interests, Tair Dar Perl, Fanny Shuster Apr 2015

Flings And Things: The Effects Of Men's Tattoos And Companions On Women's Short- And Long-Term Romantic Interests, Tair Dar Perl, Fanny Shuster

Undergraduate Student Symposium

Women use available cues to determine men’s fitness as long and short term mates. Previous studies have shown that men with tattoos are perceived as more dominant and prone to risk taking. In study 1, women rated men who were electronically manipulated to either have or not have visible tattoos. We hypothesize that tattooed men will be preferred for short-term mating strategies, but less-preferred for long-term mating. Further, a woman’s impression of a taken man includes pre-conceived assumptions that he has compelling qualities as a potential mate. These impressions, however, may be attenuated by how attractive the man’s romantic partner …

Journey Of A Thousand Miles, Cerone White Apr 2015

Journey Of A Thousand Miles, Cerone White

Undergraduate Student Symposium

“Journey of a Thousand Miles” is a short documentary film about two gay African-American men who have been living with HIV for over 30 years combined. This documentary will serve to highlight the journey of these two men, focusing on their triumphs and struggles endured when they were first diagnosed. This film will also take us on a journey documenting the progress on the HIV/AIDS epidemic then and now, examining how far we as a society have travelled over time. The hope for this film is to shine a spotlight on men who are HIV-positive and living life to the …

Retention Of Enzymatic Activity Of A Proteinase K-Peg Silica Nanoparticle Conjugate For Use On A Biomedical Point Of Care Device, Nicholas Ledra

Undergraduate Student Symposium

We wish to report the successful assembly of a nanoparticle silica with proteinase K enzyme using a PEG bridge. The bridge is a hetero-bi-functional activated material which reacts with free amino groups on one end (SVA) and Sulfydryl groups on the other (MAL). This 20,000 molecular weight cross linker was selected to allow for the retention of enzymatic activity.

The nanoparticles that were created are intended for use in clinical diagnostic devices, such that the enzyme is active on large substrates and can be immobilized according to device architecture. We report here that the enzymatic activity of this nanoparticle silica …

Morphological Variation Of The Penis And Cirral As Well As Potential Denticulated Bristle Function In The Barnacle, Chthamalus Stellatus, Dan Schneck Apr 2015

Morphological Variation Of The Penis And Cirral As Well As Potential Denticulated Bristle Function In The Barnacle, Chthamalus Stellatus, Dan Schneck

Undergraduate Student Symposium

Many barnacles have phenotypically plastic cirri and penises. We studied this ability in Chthamalus stellatus over a range of wave exposure, height and population density along the John U. Lloyd State Park jetty. We also examined specialized, serrated bristles found on the cirri to determine functionality of these bristles, as well as to document any variation. We observed no meaningful variation in penis or cirrus morphology with wave exposure, height or crowding. However both correlate with body size, which is greatest in the middle of their vertical range. Barnacles in the middle of their vertical range also had more denticulate …

Undergraduate Student Symposium

Major components of the brain Renin‐Angiotensin System may provide modes of therapy for impaired neurons. Angiotensin II via its receptors, AT1 and AT2, induces proliferation and differentiation of rodent neural stem cells. This study was undertaken to determine if AT1 and AT2 receptor stimulation by Angiotensin II induces proliferation and differentiation of human neural stem cells (hNSC). This study will assess whether selective agonism of AT1 and AT2 receptors on hNSC could possibly induce proliferation and differentiation in damaged areas of the brain caused by stroke, traumatic brain injury, and several neurodegenerative diseases in a therapeutic manner. Using hNSC, this …

Estimating Growth And Mortality In Elasmobranchs: Are We Doing It Correctly?, Brian J. Moe Apr 2015

Estimating Growth And Mortality In Elasmobranchs: Are We Doing It Correctly?, Brian J. Moe

HCNSO Student Theses and Dissertations

The instantaneous mortality rate (M) is an important parameter in elasmobranch management and conservation, but is difficult to estimate directly. Thus, indirect estimates based on relatively easily obtained life history parameters are commonly used. Many indirect methods incorporate one or more parameters from the von Bertalanffy growth model (VBGM), which is often criticized for its inability to describe changes in growth associated with maturity. The Lester growth model (LGM) is a biphasic alternative to the VBGM that incorporates trade-offs between reproduction, growth, and survival, and may therefore more accurately estimate M. I used published data from 29 …

Positive Psychology’S Character Strengths In Addiction-Spirituality Research: A Qualitative Systematic Literature Review, Sahaya G. Selvam Apr 2015

Positive Psychology’S Character Strengths In Addiction-Spirituality Research: A Qualitative Systematic Literature Review, Sahaya G. Selvam

The Qualitative Report

There is an increasing interest in the scientific study of the association between spirituality and recovery from addiction. While most of these studies have provided evidence for a possible relationship, others have explored the underlying mechanisms and meditators in the relationship. However, generally, many studies and reviews have not approached the issue within a specific theoretical framework of mainstream psychology. In an attempt to fill this gap, the review being reported here undertook a Qualitative Systematic Literature Review (QSLR) of addiction-spirituality literature. QSLR is an orderly manner of searching for academic literature, selecting relevant literature following a set of inclusion/exclusion …

HCNSO Student Theses and Dissertations

The largest Florida manatee (Trichechus manatus latirostris) aggregation at a natural warm-water refuge occurs in Kings Bay, Crystal River, FL. Over the last 32 years, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the State of Florida have created a network of manatee protection areas within Kings Bay including a year-round refuge designation and seven Federal manatee sanctuaries during the winter manatee season (November 15 – March 31). Aerial survey data collected between 1983 and 2012 was used to examine the seasonal change in manatee distribution within Kings Bay in order to assess the effectiveness of current sanctuary sizes …

Evaluation Of Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals In The Florida Coastal Pelagic Fish Complex Following The Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill Event, Rachel Hickey Apr 2015

Evaluation Of Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals In The Florida Coastal Pelagic Fish Complex Following The Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill Event, Rachel Hickey

HCNSO Student Theses and Dissertations

Following the BP Deepwater Horizon oil spill event, there was a critical need to assess the effects of the oil and dispersant chemicals on the coastal pelagic fish complex in the Gulf of Mexico and the Florida Straits. The objective of this study was to determine if spilled crude oil and dispersant chemicals have posed an ecological risk to the coastal pelagic fish complex through the detection of vitellogenesis. Crude oil containing polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), dispersant chemicals and other estrogen-mimicking compounds are suspected to induce vitellogenin production in male and immature female fish, normally only produced by sexually mature …

Land-Based Coral Nurseries: A Valuable Tool For Production And Transplantation Of Acropora Cervicornis, Keri L. O'Neil Apr 2015

Land-Based Coral Nurseries: A Valuable Tool For Production And Transplantation Of Acropora Cervicornis, Keri L. O'Neil

HCNSO Student Theses and Dissertations

Coral nurseries have become a popular and successful method to produce coral fragments for reef-restocking and restoration projects worldwide. Numerous in-situ coral nurseries have been established and many studies have focused on the most effective way to produce coral fragments in offshore nurseries. In contrast, production of coral fragments in land-based nurseries is rarely studied despite a growing knowledge of coral husbandry and coral aquaculture. Little data exist on the success of tank-raised corals when transplanted back into reef environments. This thesis presents the results of a study designed to assess the use of land-based coral nurseries in production of …

Immunology Inspired Detection Of Data Theft From Autonomous Network Activity, Theodore O. Cochran Apr 2015

Immunology Inspired Detection Of Data Theft From Autonomous Network Activity, Theodore O. Cochran

CCAC Theses and Dissertations

The threat of data theft posed by self-propagating, remotely controlled bot malware is increasing. Cyber criminals are motivated to steal sensitive data, such as user names, passwords, account numbers, and credit card numbers, because these items can be parlayed into cash. For anonymity and economy of scale, bot networks have become the cyber criminal’s weapon of choice. In 2010 a single botnet included over one million compromised host computers, and one of the largest botnets in 2011 was specifically designed to harvest financial data from its victims. Unfortunately, current intrusion detection methods are unable to effectively detect data extraction techniques …

Histology And Ultrastructure Of Montastraea Cavernosa And Porites Astreiodes During Regeneration And Recruitment: Anthropogenic Stressors And Transplant Success, Dorothy-Ellen A. Renegar

HCNSO Student Theses and Dissertations

Corals combine photosynthesis and calcification in an intricate and delicately balanced relationship to form large biomineralized structures that are dominant features of tropical coastlines worldwide. Coral reefs have great scientific and economic importance but have recently experienced widespread decline attributed to increasing anthropogenic pressure on reef systems. Physical damage events, such as ship groundings, when coupled with existing nutrient stress and changing global climate present a poor outlook for successful natural recovery of reef communities. The main goal of the proposed research is to better understand how environmental factors, both local and global, affect the coral holobiont and influence overall …

Origins Of An Unmarked Georgia Cemetery Using Ancient Dna Analysis, Andrew T. Ozga, Raul Y. Tito, Brian M. Kemp, Hugh Matternes, Alexandra J. Obregon-Tito, Leslie Neal, Cecil M. Lewis Jr.

Biology Faculty Articles

Determining the origins of those buried within undocumented cemeteries is of incredible importance to historical archaeologists and, in many cases, the nearby communities. In the case of Avondale Burial Place, a cemetery in Bibb County, Georgia, in use from 1820 to 1950, all written documentation of those interred within it has been lost. Osteological and archaeological evidence alone could not describe, with confidence, the ancestral origins of the 101 individuals buried there. In the present study, we used ancient DNA extraction methods in well-preserved skeletal fragments from 20 individuals buried in Avondale Burial Place to investigate the origins of the …

Recent studies suggest that gut microbiomes of urban-industrialized societies are different from those of traditional peoples. Here we examine the relationship between lifeways and gut microbiota through taxonomic and functional potential characterization of faecal samples from hunter-gatherer and traditional agriculturalist communities in Peru and an urban-industrialized community from the US. We find that in addition to taxonomic and metabolic differences between urban and traditional lifestyles, hunter-gatherers form a distinct sub-group among traditional peoples. As observed in previous studies, we find that Treponema are characteristic of traditional gut microbiomes. Moreover, through genome reconstruction (2.2–2.5 MB, coverage depth × 26–513) and functional …
