Pathophysiological Relevance Of Astroglial Angiotensin And The Endocannabinoid Signaling Systems In Shrs, Dhanush Haspula
Pathophysiological Relevance Of Astroglial Angiotensin And The Endocannabinoid Signaling Systems In Shrs, Dhanush Haspula
Student Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
BACKGROUND: Spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHRs), an essential hypertension model, are characterized by pro-inflammatory states in brainstems. While Angiotensin (Ang) II, via activation of glial Ang Type 1 receptors (AT1Rs), has been shown to trigger a significant upsurge in pro-inflammatory cytokines, activation of astroglial Cannabinoid Type 1 Receptors (CB1Rs), elicits a potent anti-inflammatory response in the brain. Both brainstem AT1Rs and CB1Rs have also been reported to alter cardiovascular parameters in SHRs. Evidence of crosstalk between CB1Rs and AT1Rs has also emerged, further highlighting a need to understand their signaling interaction in cardiovascular diseases. APPROACH: The purpose of this study was …
Investigating Lip Protrusion Aesthetics By Comparing The Facial Profile View With An Oblique View, Barak Jones
Investigating Lip Protrusion Aesthetics By Comparing The Facial Profile View With An Oblique View, Barak Jones
Student Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Introduction: Orthodontists strive to enhance facial esthetics. Notable orthodontists including Holdaway, Ricketts, Merrifield and more each made contributions to help diagnose facial disharmonies and improve treatment outcomes. Numerous studies have evaluated the face from two perspectives, frontal and profile. Orthodontic treatment can significantly transform a facial profile. Orthodontic literature has time and again compared photos, line drawings and silhouettes in order to define a harmonious profile. Some have concluded that a more protrusive lip profile than what had been outlined traditionally is now preferred. However, while this debate continues, in this dynamic world the profile perspective is not the most …
Evaluation Of Microshear Bond Strength Of Light-Cured Composite For Cementation Of Ceramic Veneer, Khalid Motlaq
Evaluation Of Microshear Bond Strength Of Light-Cured Composite For Cementation Of Ceramic Veneer, Khalid Motlaq
Student Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Brief background and goal/ research question: Ceramic restorations were introduced as indirect restorative materials that combine high esthetics with superior mechanical properties. However, an important requirement for successful function of these restorations is adequate adhesion between the restoration material and tooth structure. The use of CAD/CAM restorations is steadily increasing, proper function and longevity of these restorations depends on good adhesion to the underlying substrate as well as operator technique. Preheated composite has been recommended by some clinicians and investigators for the adhesive luting of porcelain laminate veneers based on its good marginal adaptation and perceived superior mechanical durability when …

Spectral Properties Of A Sequence Of Matrices Connected To Each Other Via Schur Complement And Arising In A Compartmental Model, Evan Haskell, Vehbi Emrah Paksoy
Mathematics Faculty Articles
We consider a sequence of real matrices An which is characterized by the rule that An−1 is the Schur complement in An of the (1,1) entry of An, namely −en, where en is a positive real number. This sequence is closely related to linear compartmental ordinary differential equations. We study the spectrum of An. In particular,we show that An has a unique positive eigenvalue λn and {λn} is a decreasing convergent sequence. We also study the stability of An for small n using the Routh-Hurwitz criterion.

Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles
Previous research evaluating hydrocarbon toxicity to corals and coral reefs has generally focused on community-level effects, and results often are not comparable between studies because of variability in hydrocarbon exposure characterization and evaluation of coral health and mortality during exposure. Toxicity of the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon 1-methylnaphthalene to the coral Porites divaricata was assessed in a constant exposure toxicity test utilizing a novel toxicity testing protocol uniquely applicable to shallow-water corals, which considered multiple assessment metrics and evaluated the potential for post-exposure mortality and/or recovery. Acute and subacute effects (gross morphological changes, photosynthetic efficiency, mortality, and histologic cellular changes) were …

This study documents the distribution and habitat preferences of the golden crab, a commercially fished species, in relation to deep-sea coral/sponge ecosystems (DSCEs) at 200-900 m depths off eastern Florida. A total of 386 h of videotapes from 94 submersible and remotely operated vehicle (ROV) dives from 1999 to 2009, covering a total distance of 376 km, were reviewed and characterized for habitat type and presence of crabs. The DSCEs surveyed included Lophelia coral mounds, Miami Terrace, Pourtalès Terrace, and Tortugas Valleys. Video transect data also included environmental surveys of proposed deep-water routes for Liquid Natural Gas (LNG) pipelines, LNG …

The damping of short gravity-capillary waves (Bragg waves) due to surfactant accumulation under low wind speed conditions results in the formation of natural sea slicks. These slicks are detectable visually and in synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imagery. Surfactants are produced by natural life processes of many organisms, such as bacteria, phytoplankton, seaweed, and zooplankton. By using DNA analysis, we are able to determine the relative abundance of surfactant-associated bacteria in the sea surface microlayer and the subsurface water column. A method to reduce contamination of samples during collection, storage, and analysis (Kurata et al., 2016; Hamilton et al., 2015) has …

Pop-up satellite archival tag (PSAT) technology that records depth, temperature, and light-level data has expanded the understanding of free-swimming behavior for numerous pelagic animals. Astronomical algorithms using these light-level data have allowed geolocation estimates of daily longitude and latitude. However, many pelagic animals have a crepuscular behavior pattern in which individuals are at depths below the photic layer during the day, thus precluding the use of traditional light-based movement algorithms for geolocation in such species as swordfish. A principal component analysis (PCA) of temperature profiles is described herein that utilizes depth and temperature data rather than light to estimate the …

Age Of Language Acquisition And Prevalence Of Suicidal Behavior In A Deaf Population With Co-Occurring Substance Use Disorder, Jared A. Embree, Nicole R. Kinzeler, Susan Fraker, Sandra Castle, Josephine F. Wilson
JADARA
If language is delayed through developmental milestones in childhood, individuals may have less access to the resiliency tools necessary to build social support and positive social identity. Suicide attempts may represent a maladaptive form of communication stemming from delayed ability to express unmet emotional needs. To evaluate the relationship between age of language acquisition and suicidality, analysis was conducted on self-reported data from prelingual deaf adults in substance use disorder treatment. Suicidal ideation was reported by 50.5% of consumers, and lifetime suicide attempts were reported by 42.1%. Individuals with significantly delayed language acquisition presented with the highest rates (61.1%) of …

Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Reports
Records of the fishes from the northern Mid-Atlantic Ridge (MAR) (41⁰N - 60⁰N) sampled during two research cruises conducted in summer 2004 on the R/V G.O. Sars and M/S Loran are presented. The cruises were major sampling efforts carried out for the MAR-ECO project, i.e. the Census of Marine Life field project entitled “Patterns and Processes of the Ecosystems of the Northern Mid-Atlantic”. The investigation included sampling with several midwater nets, bottom trawl and longlines from surface waters to about 4000 m. The list comprises around 300 species of fishes from 82 families. Many records were new to the northern …

In aquatic environments, what one observes during the day can differ substantially by night. The species composition and associated ecological processes that occur during the day are often different than night. In polar seas and at great depths, “night” can span, months, years, and beyond. Teleosts and elasmobranchs have evolved unique sensory and behavioral modalities for living in darkness. As a consequence, fishers have adopted unique strategies for exploiting fish at night or in dark systems. We propose that neglecting the night has led to an incomplete understanding of aquatic organismal ecology, population/community dynamics, and ecosystem function with consequences for …

Commercial fisheries are recognized as one of the greatest threats to shark populations worldwide, but factors affecting the likelihood of shark mortality during fishery capture are poorly understood. We used the U.S. pelagic fishery logbook data from 1992 through 2008 to quantify the effects of several variables (fisheries regulatory periods, geographic zone, target catch, and sea surface temperature) on mortality of blue sharks (Prionace glauca) and tiger sharks (Galeocerdo cuvier). Mortality rates and trends in both species closely matched those recorded from other sources, and therefore indicated that the data on sharks discarded dead and discarded …
The Influence Of Innate Behavioral Predispositions On Conflict Stakeholder Interactions In Mediation: The Camp David Accords Of 1978, Stephen D. Merson
The Influence Of Innate Behavioral Predispositions On Conflict Stakeholder Interactions In Mediation: The Camp David Accords Of 1978, Stephen D. Merson
Department of Conflict Resolution Studies Theses and Dissertations
This constructivist grounded theory study will explore the possibility that early socio-cultural experience in concert with innate cognitive mechanisms are essential components of a dual process of decision-making. Each element may influence conflict actors toward predictable predispositional behaviors manifest as bias. Specifically, we are concerned that these biases will influence the perceived and actual neutrality of the principle mediator thus compromising a mediation success. The presence of these predispositions in both mediators and conflict stakeholder challenges the validity of the conclusions in other research that does not consider the true impact of cultural dissonance on more than a superficial insinuation …

Members of the LGBT community have historically been victims of marginalization and alienation to various degrees. Incidents such as the Stonewall Riots, pride marches, and manifestos, among others, have served as a way for the LGBTQ community to attempt to take a stand against the systems in place that perpetuate inequality. Factors such as identity and gender have directly impacted the level to which individuals are shunned from their families, communities and social nexus. The purpose of this dissertation is to explore how factors such as identity and gender impact a sense of integration in the LGBTQ community. In addition, …

Caecidae (Mollusca: Gastropoda) In Broward County, Florida, Andres S. Lester-Coll
HCNSO Student Theses and Dissertations
Caecidae is a widespread family of minute gastropod snails. Although a few species have previously been found in abundance in a few localized studies in Broward County waters, little is known about their richness, diversity, abundance and distribution in different habitats throughout local waters. This project examined species assemblages both qualitatively and quantitatively in a range of benthic habitats across Broward County. Samples were collected from five different habitat types from northern and southern Broward Country, and included two of each of the following five sites: mangrove, Intracoastal Waterway, creek, reef and rubble. Caecid specimens were removed from general samples, …
