Perceptions Of Barriers In Prosecuting Human Trafficking Cases, Jennifer Nelms
Theses and Dissertations
Human trafficking is a world-wide problem with many barriers. Human trafficking cases are criminal but are also a violation of human rights. Human trafficking victims are lured from their homes based on the allusion from the trafficker of a better life. The victims are then beaten, forces to use drugs, and essentially broken. Once the victim is broken they are forced to perform sexual acts. Due to the initial promises and threats the victims endure, they also suffered from fear of trusting others especially law enforcement as well as other psychological issues similar to that of a domestic violence victim. …

Self-Service Technology In A Library System: An Examination Of Potential Library Member Adoption Of Self-Service Checkout At A Southeastern County Library System, Grace Keisha Phillips-Daley
Theses and Dissertations
This applied dissertation examined potential library member adoption of self-service technology (SST) in a southeastern county library system. The research framework of this study was based on the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM). More distinctively, this study explored the significance of motivation factors, to include both intrinsic and extrinsic factors, for choosing to use SST in a library environment as the reasonable effect of familiarity in influencing the possibility of its adoption.
The researcher used a non-probability sampling method to identify participants for the study. Edmonds and Kennedy (2013) suggested that surveys were primarily utilized to observe trends, personal attitudes, or …

Diversity In School Leadership: Re-Conceptualizing The Narrative Of Black Male School Principals And Assistant Principals For Recruitment And Retention, James Avery
Theses and Dissertations
Educational leadership is one of the most vastly explored topics in education. School principals and assistant principals make up a substantial portion of those in leadership positions. Experiences in educational leadership have been chronicled for a number of years; however, the diversity in the recorded lived experiences is lacking. To that end, the purpose of this study was to contribute to the literature by developing an understanding of and recording the essence of Black males’ experiences working in K-12 school leadership positions.
The intersection of race and gender has been proven to create dynamics which impact the enactment of leadership …

Female Psychopathy And The Personality Assessment Inventory (Pai): A Study With Incarcerated Women, Jason M. Smith, Carl B. Gacono, Ted B. Cunliffe
Archives of Assessment Psychology
In this study, PCL-R scores were used in correlational analyses with PAI scales in a sample of incarcerated women (N = 133). The total PCL-R score was significantly correlated with many PAI scales including ANT, DRG, and AGG. Categorical analyses were also used where the psychopathic women (N = 71; PCL-R ≥ 30) were significantly higher on the PAI scales of MAN, VPI, PAR, BOR, ANT, AGG, DOM; the non-psychopathic women (N = 28; PCL-R total score ≤ 24) scored higher on the RXR scale. These results further elucidate the conceptualization of female psychopathy (borderline and histrionic personality traits) and …
Developmental Implications Of Child Maltreatment: Rorschach Assessment Of Object Representations, David Joubert, Linda Webster
Developmental Implications Of Child Maltreatment: Rorschach Assessment Of Object Representations, David Joubert, Linda Webster
Archives of Assessment Psychology
Child maltreatment is associated with a variety of negative psychological, social, and health outcomes. It is particularly important for healthcare professionals to assess psychosocial functioning in children and adolescents in foster care in order to facilitate optimal levels of adjustment in this population. The relative validity of two developmentally-based scales applied to Rorschach data, the Primitive Object Relations scheme (Kwawer, 1979) and the Developmental Object Relations Scale (Ipp, 1986), was investigated in a sample of 71 youth in foster care. Results from dimension reduction analyses suggest that the POR captures specific elements of primitive object relations, characterized by themes of …

Accessibility Of Interpreting Services For Deaf Prisons Inmates At Arrest And In Court: A Matter Of Basic Constitutional Rights, Katrina R. Miller, Mccay Vernon
JADARA
Self-reports of 72 profoundly deaf, signing inmates incarcerated in the state of Texas post-ADA revealed that only 27.8% had been provided a sign language interpreter at arrest. Furthermore, almost 20% reported that they received no interpreting services in the courtroom, despite being charged with felony offenses. The average educational achievement of these 72 individuals was second grade. Specific barriers to due process that deaf suspects and defendants face when interacting with the criminal justice system are stereotypes that all deaf people can speech read (read lips) and read written English proficiently enough to preclude the use of sign language interpreters. …

Anxiety Symptoms And Sleep Disturbance In Veterans With Posttraumatic Stress Disorder: The Impact Of Receiving And Training A Service Dog, Diane Scotland-Coogan
The Qualitative Report
The impact of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) on our combat veterans and their families is extensive. Symptoms of anxiety and the effects of sleep disturbance have a negative impact on daily functioning (Wright et al., 2011). The presence of a dog has demonstrated a reduction in anxiety symptoms, which may have a positive influence on improved sleep (Shearer, Hunt, Chowdhury, & Nicol, 2016). The Veterans Administration (VA) has been using canines to assist combat veterans in reintegrating into civilian life, and most currently, as a part of psychological therapy (Rubenstein, 2012). This research examined the impact on combat veterans with …

An Overview Of The Legal Rights Of Culturally Deaf Criminal Suspects, Katrina R. Miller, Mccay Vernon
An Overview Of The Legal Rights Of Culturally Deaf Criminal Suspects, Katrina R. Miller, Mccay Vernon
JADARA
The majority of culturally deaf individuals who become suspects in a criminal investigation are persons who have limited understanding of legal terminology and procedures. Despite legal safeguards such as the Miranda Warnings and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), Mirandizing these individuals continues to present unique challenges to law enforcement due to the diverse educational and communication abilities of the deaf population. This discussion will focus on legally established civil rights of signing deaf suspects in relation to the administration of the Miranda Warnings and other legal proceedings.

A Sikh Boy’S Exclusion In Australian School: A Phenomenological Study Of Parent’S Response, Kanwarjeet Singh, Jane Southcott
A Sikh Boy’S Exclusion In Australian School: A Phenomenological Study Of Parent’S Response, Kanwarjeet Singh, Jane Southcott
The Qualitative Report
Diasporic relocation and resettlement ideally generate new experiences for diasporic communities and their host societies. At times, host societies (in general) and education (in concomitance) could remain impervious towards the unique cultural practices of diasporic communities, fostering a cultural gap. Such gaps may result in conflicts that impact social engagement, including education, posing cultural and educational challenges for diasporic people. Towards realisation of social justice and whilst balancing diversity, contemporary multi-cultural Australian society and educational institutions may cultivate the enactment of exclusion for students with unique diasporic cultural backgrounds. Hence, the search for equity within Australian education may remain elusive. …
Hope, Courage, And Resilience In The Lives Of Transgender Women Of Color, Nadine Ruff, Amy B. Smoyer, Jean Breny
Hope, Courage, And Resilience In The Lives Of Transgender Women Of Color, Nadine Ruff, Amy B. Smoyer, Jean Breny
The Qualitative Report
There is a lack of qualitative and strengths-based knowledge about the lived experience of transgender women of color in the US. To address this research gap, a Photovoice project was undertaken with five transgender women living in a small urban area. Thematic analysis of the participants’ discussion of their photographs identified three major themes: hope, courage, and resilience. Analysis suggests a framework for understanding these women’s lived experiences and the psychosocial tools that they use to negotiate their daily lives and persevere in the face of interpersonal and structural oppression.

Professional Interaction In Mental Health Courts: Processing Defendants With Mental Illness, Monte D. Staton
The Qualitative Report
In this paper, the author presents ethnographic research and analysis of how criminal justice and mental health professionals interact with each other and with criminal defendants with mental illness in running a mental health court (MHC) program. Ethnographic field research included observations of court programs, interviews of professionals, and gathering of textual documents, at nine MHCs in a Midwestern state. In MHC criminal defendants with mental illness participate in a program of regular court appearances, probation supervision, and mandated treatment, rather than being incarcerated in jail or prison. The author utilized the symbolic interaction perspective and examined how the professionals …

Relationships, Socialization And Combat Veterans: The Impact Of Receiving And Training A Service Dog, Diane Scotland-Coogan 2386126
The Qualitative Report
The impact of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) on our combat veterans and their families is extensive. Without support, negative outlook, lack of trust in others, negative perception of self, and lack of trust in one’s judgment persist. The support of loved ones is essential to treatment adherence and rehabilitation (Meis, Barry, Kehle, Erbes, & Polusny, 2010). The Veterans Administration (VA) has been using canines to assist combat veterans in reintegrating into civilian life, and most currently as a part of psychological therapy (Rubenstein, 2012).
