Major Depressive Disorder Among Individuals Who Are Deaf: Implications For Rehabilitation Professionals, Sandra Hansmann, Shawn P. Saladin, Diana Fraser-Mendez

Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) is a potentially disabling condition which adversely affects psychosocial functioning in the lives of many people. Individuals who are prelingually and/or profoundly Deaf are especially at risk of misdiagnoses, which in turn may prevent them from receiving the treatment needed to reach their full potential in independent living or vocational rehabilitation. This article reviews general depressive symptomology, followed by a discussion of challenges associated with diagnosing MDD in individuals who are Deaf. Suggestions for therapeutic interventions are also included. The article concludes with a summary of the implications of Deafness and MDD for independent living and …

Peer Counseling Programs For Hearing Impaired Persons, Michael Strong, Carol Day-Drummer

Peer counselors and program directors from eight agencies in Northern and Southern California were interviewed in order to determine how their programs differed from other services for
hearing impaired persons, and how these programs compared with peer counseling programs in other settings. It was concluded that peer counselors provide a unique service by meeting a wide variety of needs in a supportive setting characterized by a shared background with the client. It was also apparent that the programs surveyed here had some features that were startlingly unlike peer counseling programs in other settings while in other ways they were similar. …

As a consequence of limited access to health information, Deaf and hard of hearing (Deaf/ hh)’ individuals may be at higher risk for health complications and tobacco-related diseases. To address this issue, Communication Service for the Deaf (CSD) of Oklahoma sought funding from the Oklahoma Tobacco Settlement Endowment Trust to implement the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Tobacco Use and Cessation Program. The five-year project began in 2006; it was the first major health education initiative in the state that focused on the Deaf community. Practical Implications Of The 2008 Americans With Disabilities Act Amendments (Title I) For Rehabilitation Counselors And Deaf Job Seekers, William P. Mccrone

The Americans with Disabilities Act Amendments of2008 rescued many qualified deaf job seekers and deaf workers from U.S. Supreme Court decisions that significantly limited the definition of disability for the purposes of ADA Title I private employment rights. The Title I amendments and decisions are described; practical implications and actions are suggested.
