Gotta Go Right Now: Assessing And Educating College Women About Utis, Nabiha Atiquzzaman

Undergraduate Student Symposium

Urinary tract infections (UTIs) affect 50% of women in their lifetime (Hhs.gov). The prevalence of UTIs increases with age, except for a spike seen in women aged 18-39 (Medina, 2019). UTIs cause significant psychological distress, financial impact, and scientific implications (Richtel, 2019). Previous studies have found support of UTI education enhancement interventions changing participants behavioral intention; a positive association between UTI knowledge and prevention practices was demonstrated. However, there are no studies investigating impact of educational programs on health behavior of university students and their knowledge of UTIs. The purpose of this study is to assess knowledge of UTIs among …

The Role Of Glutamine In Supporting Gut Health And Neuropsychiatric Factors, Brett J. Deters, Mir Saleem Mar 2021

The Role Of Glutamine In Supporting Gut Health And Neuropsychiatric Factors, Brett J. Deters, Mir Saleem

Biology Faculty Articles

Recent research has shown that the amino acid glutamine can positively affect gut health by supporting the gut microbiome, gut mucosal wall integrity, and by modulating inflammatory responses. As modulated by the vagus nerve, via the enteric nervous system, the gut-brain connection can impact the brain's neurochemical environment. Poor gut health can disrupt the balance of neurotransmitters, which can result in neuropsychiatric based conditions such as depression. Glutamine supplementation may provide significant adjunctive nutritional support in cases of depression by promoting proper gut health and function.

Highlighting How The Structure Of Marine Bacterial Laminarinase Can Improve Biogeochemical Cycling During Global Climate Change, Heidi Hellenbrand, Rachel Harris, Chino Villanueva

Protein Modeling Reports

Marine bacterial laminarinase cuts polysaccharides in the process of remineralization, a key process in the ocean biogeochemical cycling of nutrients. We reviewed the protein model of 6JH5 in Jmol to highlight the important areas of the model that relate to thermostability and function and the effects of global climate change on the protein. The catalytic cleft of Glu135 and Glu140 was vital to the depolymerization mechanism. Substrate chain positions 130-143, specifically Trp130 being used for recognition, were important to the proficiency of the structure. The calcium ion on the opposite side of the β-sheet from catalytic cleft increased its degrading …
