Surface Associated Amoebae On The Ctenophore, Mnemiopsis Sp., Connie S. Versteeg Jan 2007

Surface Associated Amoebae On The Ctenophore, Mnemiopsis Sp., Connie S. Versteeg

HCNSO Student Theses and Dissertations

Previous work by Moss et al. (2001) reported surface associated protists on the ctenophore Mnemiopsis sp. They frequently observed the ciliate Trichodina ctenophorii and a Flabellula-like amoeba attached to the comb plate surface. They noted that the ciliate and the amoeba were found on the subsagittal, subtentacular, and the auricular comb plates. The amoeba had a maximum width of about 15 μm and cells were crescent shaped. Ultrastructural evidence suggested that these protists were parasites although the exact nature of the association remained to be determined. This was the background for the present study.

The present investigation documented the …

Interdisciplinary Management Of Diabetic Eye Disease: A Global Approach To Care, Annette Bade, Joseph J. Pizzimenti Jan 2007

Interdisciplinary Management Of Diabetic Eye Disease: A Global Approach To Care, Annette Bade, Joseph J. Pizzimenti

Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice

Diabetic eye disease is a leading cause of acquired blindness in the United States. Most cases of blindness secondary to diabetes mellitus are preventable. In addition to exercise, proper diet, and aggressive glycemic control, patients with diabetes mellitus should be educated to adhere to established guidelines for an annual dilated retinal evaluation. The ideal model of care for patients with diabetic eye disease is an interdisciplinary, team-oriented approach with the patient as the central member of the healthcare team. The primary purpose of this paper is to present an interdisciplinary approach to management of the ocular complications of diabetes mellitus …

How Does A Child With Sensory Processing Problems Play?, Jeryl D. Benson, Meghana N. Nicka, Perri Stern Oct 2006

How Does A Child With Sensory Processing Problems Play?, Jeryl D. Benson, Meghana N. Nicka, Perri Stern

Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice

The occupation of play during one’s childhood years serves as a foundation for the development of future occupations in an individual’s life. By understanding a child’s extant play skills and deficits, one may then provide the necessary interventions needed to promote development and successful growth into new occupations. The purpose of this paper was to understand how a child with sensory processing deficits plays in a naturalistic environment. The findings revealed an interplay between the child’s underlying sensory processing deficits and his play skills and behaviors. Increased understanding of how a child with sensory processing deficits plays will provide information …

The Nature Of Career Advice Provided To Undergraduate Allied Health Sciences Students At The University Of South Australia, Marie Williams

Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the nature of career advice, especially advice concerning postgraduate research training degrees, provided to and by students in five health professional bachelor’s degree programs at the University of South Australia. In addition, differences between professional disciplines in terms of career advice and knowledge of current research activities of staff and research degree students were explored. Method: A cross-sectional survey of final year students in five disciplines within the School of Health Sciences was used in this study. Insuring The Uninsured: Reducing The Barriers To Public Insurance, Cynthia M. Saunders Sep 2006

Insuring The Uninsured: Reducing The Barriers To Public Insurance, Cynthia M. Saunders

The Qualitative Report

Health insurance is one of the essential enabling resources to gain access to medical care and ultimately increase health status. Over 11 million or one quarter of the nation’s uninsured individuals are eligible for Medicaid or the State Children’s Health Insurance Program (SCHIP), but are not enrolled. Interviews with 368 individuals from 1999 through 2003 identify eight primary barriers to enrollment in public insurance. These include: economic aspects of qualifying, lack of knowledge, benefit design of public programs, poor experiences and stigma, complexity and literacy, immigration status, poor customer service, and fear of fraud. These results suggest policy options alone …

Focused Group Interviews As An Innovative Quanti- Qualitative Methodology (Qqm ): Integrating Quantitative Elements Into A Qualitative Methodology, Brian J. Grim, Alison H. Harmon, Judy C. Gromis

The Qualitative Report

There is a sharp divide between quantitative and qualitative methodologies in the social sciences. We investigate an innovative way to bridge this gap that incorporates quantitative techniques into a qualitative method, the “quanti-qualitative method” (QQM). Specifically, our research utilized small survey questionnaires and experiment-like activities as part of the question rout e in a series of five focused group interviews on nutrition education. We show how these quantitative-type activities fit naturally with our question route and contributed to testing the hypotheses within the context of the five important characteristics of focused group interviews. The innovative use of QQM in focused …

Biology Faculty Articles

Background: With the completion of the genome sequence for rice (Oryza sativa L.), the focus of rice genomics research has shifted to the comparison of the rice genome with genomes of other species for gene cloning, breeding, and evolutionary studies. The genus Oryza includes 23 species that shared a common ancestor 8–10 million years ago making this an ideal model for investigations into the processes underlying domestication, as many of the Oryza species are still undergoing domestication. This study integrates high-throughput, hybridization-based markers with BAC end sequence and fingerprint data to construct physical maps of rice chromosome 1 orthologues in …

Some Preservation Techniques For (Deep Water) Coral Samples For Subsequent Molecular Studies: A Special Supplement From Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute, Jose V. Lopez

Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Reports

Around the time that the thirteen original Atlantic colonies were fighting for independence from Britain, there existed little agreement among naturalists as to the nature of corals. Were they inanimate (stones), plants, animals, or intermediate between the latter two (zoophytes)? This diversity of definition and opinions undoubtedly produced considerable confusion and disagreement among naturalists interested in such things. The symbiotic nature of algal cells in the tissues of some corals was also not well understood. It was not until the Darwinian period in the nineteenth century that little doubt remained, and therefore it was generally agreed, that corals were actually …

Developing An Ethics Curriculum Using Learner-Centered Pedagogy, Alice Fornari

Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice

Objective: Ethics education is an essential component of educational preparation for health care professionals. Learner-centered pedagogy can assist in the development of curricula that actively engage and challenge learners appropriately. This article describes a method for developing a case-based ethics curriculum that highlights the 5 areas of dietetics practice. Methods: A critical incident reporting technique was adapted to solicit real ethical dilemmas facing nutrition professionals in their daily practices. Educators ranked the reported dilemmas for importance in a nutrition curriculum, discussed appropriate use in selected courses, and linked the dilemmas to the American Dietetic Association’s Code of Ethics. Critical Essay: Musings On The Need To Convince Some People With Disabilities That End-Of-Life-Decision-Making-Advocates Are Not Out To Get Them, Kathy L. Cerminara

Faculty Scholarship

Kathy Cerminara, Critical Essay: Musings on the Need to Convince Some People with Disabilities That End-of-Life-Decision-Making Advocates are Not Out to Get Them, 37 Loyola University of Chicago Law Journal 343 (2006). As others have noted, the importance of the Terri Schiavo case is not legal; the various Schiavo opinions broke no new legal ground other than the constitutional questions raised when legislatures began intervening to attempt to change the outcome of the end-of-life decision-making rulings. Rather, it was activism by certain disability rights and vitalist groups that so caught the attention of the public, the politicians and the …
