The Colonial Zoanthid Palythoa Caribaeorum: Population Dynamics On Southeast Florida Reefs, Joanna C. Walczak
The Colonial Zoanthid Palythoa Caribaeorum: Population Dynamics On Southeast Florida Reefs, Joanna C. Walczak
HCNSO Student Theses and Dissertations
The colonial zoanthid Palythoa caribaeorum (Cnidaria, Zoanthidea) (Duchassaing and Michelotti 1861) is a major benthic component of most Caribbean reefs and is an extremely aggressive spatial competitor (Suchanek and Green 1981). This study looks at annual visits to 16 permanent monitoring sites over 3 reef designations (Inshore Ridge Complex, Middle Reef, and Outer Reef) in Broward County, Florida from 2002-2006. The data obtained in this study fills an informational void regarding the role of zoanthids in the southeast Florida reef benthic community. The study was conducted in two parts. Part One used digital imagery analysis to quantify the spatial cover …

Developing Interdisciplinary Team Competencies In A Blended Learning Course: Impact On Student Learning, Sharla King, Elizabeth Taylor, Franziska Satzinger, Mike Carbonaro, Elaine Greidanus
Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice
Purpose: Health science educators increasingly focus on preparing health science students to work in interdisciplinary environments. Interdisciplinary communication is often hindered by geographic distances, creating barriers to effective interdisciplinary practice. Information and communication technologies are tools that can help reduce these barriers. Therefore, it is critical to ensure that students learn to communicate and collaborate with other disciplines in both face-to-face and on-line settings. The purpose of this article is to describe students’ perceptions of developing team skills in an interdisciplinary team context using a blended learning format. Understanding the students’ experiences will help health science educators prepare students effectively …

Effects Of Participation In An Aging Game Simulation Activity On The Attitudes Of Allied Health Students Toward Older Adults, Beverly W. Henry, Carolinda Douglass, Irene M. Kostiwa
Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice
The Aging Game simulation activity was designed to improve medical students’ attitudes toward older adults. This study was conducted to determine if the Aging Game, adapted for use with allied health students, could yield positive results in the students’ levels of anxiety about aging and attitudes toward aging. The modified Aging Game was implemented at a large Midwestern university with 156 students from three allied health areas – nutrition and dietetics, physical therapy, and long-term care administration. All students actively engaged in the simulation activity and completed pre- and posttest questionnaires containing the Anxiety about Aging Scale (AAS) and the …

Purpose: This study involved the conduct of a descriptive and process evaluation to examine the implementation and maintenance of an existing local shared care program: The Hamilton Health Service Organization Mental Health and Nutrition Program located in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. The program was organized to strengthen links between mental health, nutrition, and primary care services, to improve access to mental health and nutrition care, and to realize the benefits of improved communication, collaboration and mutual support among multiple practitioners, increased continuity of care, and increased family physicians’ comfort and skill in handling more complex problems. Method: A mixed-method, multi-measures evaluation …
Social Support In Elderly Nursing Home Populations: Manifestations And Influences, Elizabeth M. Rash
Social Support In Elderly Nursing Home Populations: Manifestations And Influences, Elizabeth M. Rash
The Qualitative Report
The purpose of this study was to describe the characteristics of social support and the influencing factors on social support in nursing home environments. Observations and staff questionnaires from two central Florida nursing homes were used in this grounded theory study to answer the following questions: (1) How is social support manifested? and (2) What are influences on social support? Social support manifestations seemed predominantly superficial and did not appear to involve complex reciprocal relationships, however, when reciprocal resident tasks were observed, they appeared to have significant value and were sources of pride for the residents. Facility behaviors and policies …

Purpose: To explore the relationship between migraine and incidence of stroke in young women by analyzing variables of oral contraceptive use, hypercoagulability, cardiac abnormalities, and silent brain infarcts. Method:Variables were reviewed through computerized databases and current literature examining evidence-based medicine studies specific to analyzing the incidence of strokes in women with migraines. Results: Six recent studies, four case control and two cohort studies, were identified. Research outcomes indicate that the risk of stroke is greater in women less than 35 years of age who had migraine with aura and who used oral contraceptives. Other pathophysiologic variables, which may link migraine …
Regulation Of Cell Diameter, For3p Localization, And Cell Symmetry By Fission Yeast Rho-Gap Rga4p, Maitreyi Das, David J. Wiley, Saskia Medina, Helen A. Vincent, Michelle D. Larrea, Andrea Oriolo, Fulvia Verde
Regulation Of Cell Diameter, For3p Localization, And Cell Symmetry By Fission Yeast Rho-Gap Rga4p, Maitreyi Das, David J. Wiley, Saskia Medina, Helen A. Vincent, Michelle D. Larrea, Andrea Oriolo, Fulvia Verde
Chemistry and Physics Faculty Articles
Control of cellular dimensions and cell symmetry are critical for development and differentiation. Here we provide evidence that the putative Rho-GAP Rga4p of Schizosaccharomyces pombe controls cellular dimensions. rga4Δ cells are wider in diameter and shorter in length, whereas Rga4p overexpression leads to reduced diameter of the growing cell tip. Consistent with a negative role in cell growth control, Rga4p protein localizes to the cell sides in a “corset” pattern, and to the nongrowing cell tips. Additionally, rga4Δ cells show an altered growth pattern similar to that observed in mutants of the formin homology protein For3p. Consistent with …

A Hierarchy Of Medicine: Health Strategies Of Elder Khmer Refugees In The United States, Denise C. Lewis
The Qualitative Report
This study addresses ways Khmer refugee elders utilize traditional herbal medicine with Western biomedicine in the treatment and prevention of illnesses. Methods include semi-structured and informal interviews with elders and family members, semi-structured interviews with local health care providers and Khmer physicians, and participant observation of everyday life and actions specific to health beliefs and behaviors. Data reveal a reliance on traditional medical ideology for understanding and treating illnesses. Utilizing a traditional ideology, Khmer elders rely heavily on traditional treatments and use Western biomedicine as supplements or adjuncts to traditional preventive and curative practices. This research has important implications for …

Reconciling Dichotomous Demands: Telemarketing Agents In Bangalore And Mumbai, India, Ernesto Noronha, Premilla D'Cruz
The Qualitative Report
Though outsourcing has created enormous employment potential in India’s information technology enabled services/business process outsourcing (ITES/BPO) sector, the implications for employees remain to be understood. The present paper describes employee experiences in telemarketing outbound call centers in Bangalore and Mumbai, India. Following van Manen’s (1998) hermeneutic phenomenological approach, data were collected through unstructured conversational interviews with 18 telemarketing agents identified vi a snowball sampling and were subject to holistic and sententious thematic analyses. Reconciling dichotomous experiences at work was the label used to capture participants’ core experiences and indicated that while participants’ simultaneous positive and negative experiences contributed to a …
