Understanding Student Self-Disclosure Typology Through Blogging, Vernon B. Harper, Erika J. Harper

The Qualitative Report

Significant research indicates that student self-disclosure plays an important role in the learning experience and producing positive learning outcomes. Blogging is an increasingly popular web tool that can potentially aid educators by encouraging student self-disclosure. Both content analysis and focus groups were used to assess whether student self-disclosure reveals in descriptive, topical, and evaluative categories. The results indicate that blogging encourages student self-disclosure, and the implications of these findings are also discussed.

Ring Of Silence: African American Women’S Experiences Related To Their Breasts And Breast Cancer Screening, Eileen Thomas Jun 2006

Ring Of Silence: African American Women’S Experiences Related To Their Breasts And Breast Cancer Screening, Eileen Thomas

The Qualitative Report

The purpose of this study was to explore women’s memories and feelings concerning their breasts and breast cancer screening experiences in relation to their current breast cancer screening behaviors. Twelve African American women shared stories that were generated in written narratives and individual interviews. Two core themes emerged from the data analysis: silence and societal contradictions. On further review and interpretation of the core themes, one integrative theme became apparent: Ring of silence. Contradictory messages women receive from society, both voiced and unvoiced, can have a long- term effect on how some women perceive their bodies, and how they value …

Studying Hiv Risk In Vulnerable Communities: Methodological And Reporting Shortcomings In The Young Men’S Study In New York City, Ananya Mukherjea, Salvador Vidal-Oritz Jun 2006

Studying Hiv Risk In Vulnerable Communities: Methodological And Reporting Shortcomings In The Young Men’S Study In New York City, Ananya Mukherjea, Salvador Vidal-Oritz

The Qualitative Report

This article considers demographic categories used in the Young Men’s Study on HIV risk for men who have sex with men. We critique oversimplified pan-ethnic categories and the polarization of US racial discourse. We also interrogate the use of certain gender and sexuality markers that produced confusing results in this study. We use a critical standpoint derived from cultural studies to suggest that quantitative and qualitative methods of studying health risks and intimate behaviors in vulnerable populations require reorganization to more accurately represent the lives of members of these groups. Interviews, surveys, and statistics can be crude and lacking in …

The Photo Essay: A Visual Research Method For Educating Obstetricians And Other Health Care Professionals, Gwendolyn P. Quinn, Terrance L. Albrecht, Charles Mahan, Bethany A. Bell-Ellison, Tabia Henry Akintobi, Beth Reynolds, Delores Jeffers

The Qualitative Report

When it comes to issues related to low-income women seeking early, adequate, or continuous prenatal ca re, the public health and medical communities continue to tell women to take responsibility for their actions. Rarely are messages aimed at providers. To help physicians see how factors in their offices and clinics can affect service utilization, the photo essay, a visual qualitative research strategy was developed using low- income minority and disenfranchised women who had recently given birth or were near to giving birth. Eight photo essays were completed. Together, the narratives, in collaboration with the photos, provided an opportunity for physicians …

Contextualising The Research Process: Using Interviewer Notes In The Secondary Analysis Of Qualitative Data, John Goodwin, Henrietta O'Connor Jun 2006

Contextualising The Research Process: Using Interviewer Notes In The Secondary Analysis Of Qualitative Data, John Goodwin, Henrietta O'Connor

The Qualitative Report

In this paper we argue that for the secondary analysis of qualitative data to be effective, researchers need to subject any accompanying interviewer notes to the secondary analysis process. The secondary analysis of interviewer notes can provide important insight into the research process and the attitudes, experiences, and expectations of those collecting the data. Such information is essential if meaningful analyses are to be offered. Using interviewer notes from a little known research project on youth transitions form the 1960s, this paper explores how the interviewers’ experiences of the research process and their perceptions are documented in the interviewer notes.

Culture, Rhetoric, And Reconciliation: The Place Of Language In The Northern Irish Conflict And Peace Process (1998-2002), Jennifer Dougherty May 2006

Culture, Rhetoric, And Reconciliation: The Place Of Language In The Northern Irish Conflict And Peace Process (1998-2002), Jennifer Dougherty

Peace and Conflict Studies

Alterations in public discourse towards multiculturalism, reconciliation and liberal democracy at the national level in Northern Ireland are evident from 1998 - 2002, but to what end? To what extent did language play a positive role in the Northern Ireland peace process? Recognizing that language does not tell the whole story of the Northern Irish experience of the Troubles or current peace process, the author highlights how language, as a transmitter and constitutor of culture, has played a role as a signifier of potential conflict, peace and progress (or lack thereof). In particular, the author considers several texts including excerpts …

Assessing Past Strategies For Countering Terrorism, In Lebanon And By Libya, Louis Kriesberg May 2006

Assessing Past Strategies For Countering Terrorism, In Lebanon And By Libya, Louis Kriesberg

Peace and Conflict Studies

American strategies to deal with terrorist attacks against Americans in Lebanon in the 1980s and by Libya since the beginning of the 1980s are examined. The consequences of the various strategies employed by U.S. government officials over time and the strategies employed by American non-governmental actors and by international organizations are compared. In addition, alternative strategies that might plausibly have been employed are also discussed. Official actions that relied largely on military methods and were conducted unilaterally tended to be less effective, even counterproductive, compared to actions that were multilateral and relied significantly on diplomatic approaches, often aided by intermediaries.

Synthesis Of New Ruthenium (Ii) Complex With A Long Excited State Lifetime For Its Use As A Dna Probing Biosensor, Terry-Ann Dawes Apr 2006

Synthesis Of New Ruthenium (Ii) Complex With A Long Excited State Lifetime For Its Use As A Dna Probing Biosensor, Terry-Ann Dawes

Undergraduate Student Symposium

Due to the degree of instrumentation needed for DNA diagnostic procedures, it has become considerably expensive for the public and independent laboratories to conduct research on genetic diseases and to probe DNA. Even though myriad technologies are available for detection and measurement of modified target molecules, DNA probing techniques are involved and complex processes. To remedy the problem, researchers have developed methods of molecular binding detection by using fluorometric assays because they are more sensitive than colormetric ones. However, these have proved to be inefficient because of complications due to background fluorescence and light scattering. Additionally, current methods of chemiluminescence …

Induction Of Apoptosis By Resveratrol In Cancer Cells During Combination Treatment With Nutlin-3 And Tgf—β, Kamal Kaur, Farheen F. Pervez, Vandana Jasani, Nida Bukhari, Madhusudhanan Narasimhan Apr 2006

Induction Of Apoptosis By Resveratrol In Cancer Cells During Combination Treatment With Nutlin-3 And Tgf—β, Kamal Kaur, Farheen F. Pervez, Vandana Jasani, Nida Bukhari, Madhusudhanan Narasimhan

Undergraduate Student Symposium

Resveratrol (3, 4’, 5-trihydroxy-trans-stilbene) is a naturally occurring compound found mainly in the skins of grapes and various other fruits and nuts. Resveratrol (RV) has been previously studied and found to work through various mechanisms and produce anti- inflammatory, antiviral and anticancer effects (1,2,3). Previous studies have shown that RV promotes p53-dependent apoptosis via a Ras-MAPK signal transduction pathway by increasing the phosphorylation of serine residues on p53 (4). In the current study we have investigated the induction of apoptosis by RV in A2780/CP-70 cells in combination with Nutlin-3 and TGF-β. The combination treatments with Nutlin-3 and TGF- β were …

Priceless Passage, Amy Harvey Apr 2006

Priceless Passage, Amy Harvey

Undergraduate Student Symposium

Written by Amy Harvey in 1993, the poem will be performed as a monolog by the author. The poem is about a young and vulnerable woman who has come to realize that she has the courage to liberate herself from a deceitful boyfriend, and confronts him. This piece is easily applicable for most young women and men. Many of us have had a partner or perhaps a friend who has betrayed a trust or compromised a friendship in some way. This poem is based on a true experience, and is emotionally driven. The emotional responses begin as enlightenment and acknowledgement …

Effects Of Social Cognition On Children With Language Impairment And Connections For Classroom Practice To Address No Child Left Behind, Arlisha Canion, Stacey Gonzalez Apr 2006

Effects Of Social Cognition On Children With Language Impairment And Connections For Classroom Practice To Address No Child Left Behind, Arlisha Canion, Stacey Gonzalez

Undergraduate Student Symposium

Language impairment is a communication disorder in which children experience difficulty in the ability to understand and/or use words in context. Children with language impairments are not able to relate to others receptively or expressively, thereby creating an affect on the children’s development of social cognition. Social cognition refers to children’s perception and interpretation of the world around them. For children with language impairments, the inability to relate to others in the world around them both verbally and nonverbally facilitates a breakdown of language development and social communication. Therefore, children with language impairments require the use of best practices in …

Trinidad Carnival: “The Greatest Show On Earth”, Marissa S. Dass Apr 2006

Trinidad Carnival: “The Greatest Show On Earth”, Marissa S. Dass

Undergraduate Student Symposium

Trinidad Carnival is the oldest and greatest of them all, the mother of all carnivals, often imitated, never equaled. Billed as “The Greatest Show on Earth”, Trinidad Carnival is far more than two days of masquerading, it is a whole explosive season in itself; and the seeds of brilliance that blossom during the carnival season have been germinating in the minds of designers, composers and pan-men, well before Christmas. Trinidad Carnival is dubbed “The Greatest Show on Earth” because it is recognition of the human need to recreate, to play and to learn about the truth, joy and art of …

The Formation Of A New Gadolinium Dendrimer And Its Potential Use As An Mri Contrast Agent, Karoline Korah Apr 2006

The Formation Of A New Gadolinium Dendrimer And Its Potential Use As An Mri Contrast Agent, Karoline Korah

Undergraduate Student Symposium

The search for a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) contrast agent that enhances the images of the body’s bloodstream, tissues, or organs is currently continued. There are several known gadolinium compounds that are used as MRI agents. The use of dendrimers as an MRI contrast agent is being investigated, but the recent focus on the applications of dendrimers allows much of the developments of research to be fairly new. This research project will involve creating a new gadolinium compound and studying the possibility of using it as an MRI contrast agent.

Strengthening Silicate Coatings On Quartz Particles With The Addition Of Aluminum Phosphate, Moataz Behairy, Maria Bernal, Kamaljit Kaur, Mark Monroe, Jennifer Novek, Farheen Parvez, Shweta Shah, Vien Tran Apr 2006

Strengthening Silicate Coatings On Quartz Particles With The Addition Of Aluminum Phosphate, Moataz Behairy, Maria Bernal, Kamaljit Kaur, Mark Monroe, Jennifer Novek, Farheen Parvez, Shweta Shah, Vien Tran

Undergraduate Student Symposium

For aesthetic purposes, quartz particles are coated to provide a wide array of colored sands. These colored sands are used extensively in roofing shingles and pool plasters. The coating is a proprietary mixture whose base is sodium silicate. Sodium silicate solutions are also referred to as water glass. Upon heating to remove water, a hard amorphous silicon dioxide coating is left behind. This coating is rugged but not a tough as crystalline quartz. This study investigates the use of Goldschmidt’s rules of substitution, a fundamental theory from geochemistry, to enhance the coating of the quartz particles. Aluminum phosphate was chosen …

Media Images, Self-Reconstructions, And Young American Women’S Quest For Perfection, Danielle Garcia Apr 2006

Media Images, Self-Reconstructions, And Young American Women’S Quest For Perfection, Danielle Garcia

Undergraduate Student Symposium

The late 20th and early 21st centuries produced a new variety of female adolescent who was reared on a heavy diet of popular images, especially through consumer magazines and television programming. Now entering into adulthood, these young women continue to negotiate their self-identity within the context of cultural apparatuses that instruct them in everything from life-style choices to the ideal body image. According to the National Institute on Media and the Family, some fifty-three percent of thirteen year-old girls are unhappy with their physical appearance, and by age seventeen, body dissatisfaction in this population escalates to seventy-eight percent …

Fail One Test, Fail For The Year: Florida Education And The Fcat, Michael Bergbauer Apr 2006

Fail One Test, Fail For The Year: Florida Education And The Fcat, Michael Bergbauer

Undergraduate Student Symposium

Imagine working hard all school year and managing decent A and B grades. Imagine, too, that failing a single test nullifies all that hard work and results in grade

retention. This experience happens to hundreds of students each year and the test they fail is the FCAT. Relying on test scores to make critical educational decisions about students or schools, otherwise known as high-stakes testing, has become commonplace in Florida education. So much so, that curriculum become dedicated to one objective - pass the state test. However, the FCAT should not be used to determine promotion and retention in grade …

Adhesion Of Transferrin To Fda Group Ii Contact Lenses, Viviana Sumi Lee, Shweta Shah, Rafia Chodhry

Undergraduate Student Symposium

Approximately 75 million people worldwide use contact lenses for vision correction. Tears contain roughly 60 different proteins that accumulate on the lens, contributing to lens deterioration, and leading to vision problems and ocular pathology. We examined the adhesion of transferrin FDA Group II contact lenses, and compared these results to previous results examining the adhesion of lysozyme, albumin, and transferrin to lenses from the other FDA material groups: Group I - Optima FW disposable lenses (Bausch and Lomb, Inc. Rochester NY, U.S.A.); Group II - Soflens one-day disposables (Bausch and Lomb, Inc.); Group III - PureVision continuous wear disposables (Baush …

The Way It Has Been, Louis D'Lando Apr 2006

The Way It Has Been, Louis D'Lando

Undergraduate Student Symposium

This poem explains the duality of being part of a certain ethnic background and at the same time being part of a generation in the United States where everyone wants to be seen as one. It reflects both, the need to belong and the fear of losing one’s sense of “identity” as time wears on.

It Takes True Grit To Challenge Gender Stereotypes, Deborah Z. Greenbaum Apr 2006

It Takes True Grit To Challenge Gender Stereotypes, Deborah Z. Greenbaum

Undergraduate Student Symposium

This paper evaluates the film True Grit as representative of Westerns that challenge traditional gender roles. The argument is made that Westerns have been unduly dismissed by gender theorists for being monolithic affirmations of traditional masculine hegemony.True Grit, a film from 1969, shows that unorthodox gender portrayals are not a new concept. Focus is placed on analyzing the female character, Mattie Ross. Mattie is revealed to debunk the traditional female role through her appearance, interests, personality traits and behavior. Mattie flouts Laura Mulvey’s assertion that women are in film to pander to the “male gaze” by exhibiting a …
