Effects Of A Dispersed And Undispersed Crude Oil On Mangroves, Seagrasses And Corals, T. G. Ballou, Richard E. Dodge, S. C. Hess, A. H. Knap, Thomas D. Sleeter

Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Reports

The primary objective of this study was to evaluate the application of dispersant to spilled oil as a means of reducing adverse environmental effects of oil spills in nearshore, tropical waters. The results of numerous laboratory and field studies have suggested that dispersants may play a useful role in reducing adverse impacts on sensitive and valued environments such as mangroves, seagrasses, and corals. However, the use of dispersants has not been allowed thus far in most situations because of a lack of direct experimental data on the various effects of dispersants and the environmental trade-offs presumed to occur as a …

An Affective Strategy To Teach Self-Monitoring Study Skills To Secondary Severely Emotionally Disturbed (Sed) Students., William T. Roach Jr.

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

This author developed and implemented a self-monitoring study strategy with an affective focus. It was designed to address eight target behaviors that interfered with classroom performance. Based on a questionnaire and inventory administered to 34 students and eight teachers the problems identified were directly associated with the process of independent study. The targeted problems were demonstrating impatience, setting goals, allowing distractions to delay, reviewing paper before turning in, rushing through an assignment, expecting assignment to be difficult, requesting assistance appropriately and relying too much on others. The strategy was eventually used with 13 severely emotionally disturbed students at the secondary …

Growth Rate Of Stony Corals Of Broward County, Florida: Effects From Past Beach Renourishment Projects, Richard E. Dodge, Broward County Erosion Prevention District Environmental Quality Control Board Jun 1987

Growth Rate Of Stony Corals Of Broward County, Florida: Effects From Past Beach Renourishment Projects, Richard E. Dodge, Broward County Erosion Prevention District Environmental Quality Control Board

Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Reports

The skeletal growth of hermatypic (reef-building) corals is a sensitive indicator of environmental conditions and perturbations. In particular, excessive sedimentation and turbidity act to depress coral growth because energy expenditure is required to remove sediment and because turbidity reduces light energy necessary for coral health and nutrition.

Normalized annual growth (linear skeletal extension) rates of Broward County, Florida reef-building corals were over 16 years (1985-1970). Star corals (Montastrea annularis) and brain corals (Diploria labyrinthiformis) were collected from each of four reef sites at two depths (9m and 18m). Collection areas were located in the vicinity of …

Achieving Student Mastery Learning Of Fifth Grade Minimal Standards For Computer Literacy Through The Development And Use Of A Computer Literacy Program, Cheryl Temple Dafeldecker

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

At the practicum site classroom teachers were not teaching nor were they prepared to teach, the State Computer Literacy Minimal Standard objectives. Teachers were not including computer curriculum in their lesson plans and cited the lack of structured curricular materials, experience, and training as their rationale. The practicum targeted fourth and fifth grade students, with an objective of 85 percent attaining mastery on the tested minimal standards and related objectives after completion of a Computer Literacy Program (CLP), and measured by an objective-based posttest. In order to accomplish this, teachers needed exposure to the field of compute education, particularly computer …

The school personnel …

The Use Of Improvisation And Mapping To Teach A Dramatic Text, Denise Veronica Aloma May 1987

The Use Of Improvisation And Mapping To Teach A Dramatic Text, Denise Veronica Aloma

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

The majority of ninth grade students indicated a strong negative attitude toward the study of Shakespearean drama. The same students had difficulty comprehending the Shakespearean language, understanding the plot and characters and recalling important information in the play. The degree of difficulty which these students exhibited was indicated by the best average grades earned on a comprehensive pretest of the play, Merchant of Venice, by William Shakespeare. The teaching strategy used to correct the problem was script-based improvisation and mapping. This strategy involved much activity and utilization of all the senses. Students were involved both as actors and spectators. Recall …

The author developed a program to aid regular classroom teachers in development of lesson plans for substitute teachers and to assist the substitute teachers in the implementation of those plans. The program's objectives were to improve substitutes' performance, to have substitutes follow teacher's lesson and and leave summaries of their classroom activities for the regular teacher.

The strategy was directed to the administrators, the classroom teachers and the substitutes. Substitutes were given information packets giving them directions concerning attendance and other school-wide policies. Teachers were given model lesson plans and suggestions. Administrators assessed evaluations of the substitutes by the teachers …

Developing A Publication Containing Elementary Teachers’ Successful Mathematics Instruction Strategies, Susan M. Syster Mar 1987

Developing A Publication Containing Elementary Teachers’ Successful Mathematics Instruction Strategies, Susan M. Syster

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

Mathematics teachers are trained to assess students' abilities and instructional needs. Many teachers utilize creative teaching strategies, games, and various media to meet those needs. Surveys indicate that teachers are constantly searching for new skill instruction strategies, time savers, games, materials, and other ways to improve teaching in mathematics classrooms. In order to meet the needs expressed by educators concerning busy schedules and the lack of time to get together with fellow teachers to share ideas and visit each others' classrooms, a mathematics publication (to be distributed district-wide) was developed to address these needs. The publication was written by and …

Paleomagnetic Results From Luzon And The Central Philippines, Robert Mccabe, Eichi Kikawa, Jay T. Cole, Ariel J. Malicse, Paul E. Baldauf, Jun Yumul, Jose Almasco Jan 1987

Paleomagnetic Results From Luzon And The Central Philippines, Robert Mccabe, Eichi Kikawa, Jay T. Cole, Ariel J. Malicse, Paul E. Baldauf, Jun Yumul, Jose Almasco

Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles

Samples were collected from 86 paleomagnetic sites from the islands of Luzon, Marinduque, Mindoro, Panay, Negros, Cebu, and Mindanao in the Philippine Arc. The sampling sites range in age from Pleistocene to Jurassic. Characteristic directions of magnetization of the samples were determined by the use of vector plots. Curie temperature determinations, thin section studies, and hysteresis studies showed that remanence of these samples is carried by fine-grained (pseudo-single domain) magnetite. Positive fold tests from Miocene data from Panay, Jurassic data from Mindoro, and Cretaceous data from Cebu suggest that the magnetization of these regions was acquired prior to folding. Rotations …

A New Species Of Chevalia From The Caribbean Sea (Crustacea: Amphipoda), J. L. Barnard, James Darwin Thomas

Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles

A new Caribbean species, Chevalia carpenteri is described; heretofore only one species of the genus was known, but we have examined material that suggests morphs may represent distinct species or subspecies. We report C. mexicana and extend its range from the northern Gulf of Mexico to Belize. Our new species differs from the world complex of C. aviculae morphs in the ovate article 2 of pereopods 5-7 and the posteriorly flat epimera with large notches.

New Species Of Neomegamphopus From Tropical America (Crustacea: Marine Amphipoda), J. L. Barnard, James Darwin Thomas

Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles

Neomegamphopus hiatus is described from Venezuela and the Florida Keys, N. pachiatus and N. heardi from Pacific Panama, and N. kalanii from eastern Florida. Neomegamphopus hiatus and N. pachiatus differ from a close congener, N. roosevelti (tropical eastern Pacific), in the much larger coxa 1 of mature males, the less setose gnathopods, and the broader carpus of the first gnathopod bearing a much deeper incision defining the posterior tooth; the carpus is much shorter and stouter in N. hiatus and N. pachiatus than in N. roosevelti. Neomegamphopus heardi differs from the other species in the bifid tooth on the …

Coliphage As An Indicator Of Fecal Pollution In Marine Waters: Assay, Validation, And Application, Donald S. Mccorquodale Jr. Jan 1987

Coliphage As An Indicator Of Fecal Pollution In Marine Waters: Assay, Validation, And Application, Donald S. Mccorquodale Jr.

HCNSO Student Theses and Dissertations

Escherichia coli, the preferred bacterial indicator for fecal pollution in fresh waters, does not conform to the concept of an indicator microorganism because it is rapidly killed or inactivated by seawater. This series of papers investigated the value of coliphage, a virus which infects E. coli, as an indicator of pollution in saline waters. In order to be an accurate indicator an organism must (1) be ubiquitous in wastewater, (2) survive and be detectable at least as long as the harmful organisms, and (3) be easy to isolate and identify.

A review of the literature determined that coliphage …

A Comparison Of The Relative Sediment Transport Of Quartz And Aragonite Sand For Use As Beach Renourishment Materials In South Florida, Brian Lewis Lipsitz Jan 1987

A Comparison Of The Relative Sediment Transport Of Quartz And Aragonite Sand For Use As Beach Renourishment Materials In South Florida, Brian Lewis Lipsitz

HCNSO Student Theses and Dissertations

An evaluation of the relative rates of sediment transport of an oolitic aragonite sand and a quartz quarry sand as possible beach renourishment materials has been conducted. When comparing equal volumes, the aragonite experienced less transport than the quartz in both the longshore and in the onshore-offshore directions. When comparing equal size fractions, in sizes 0.35mm and smaller, aragonite was less transportable. The quartz was less transportable in the sizes greater than 0.35mm. This trend was observed in two separate experiments and is attributed to the effective density ratio of aragonite to quartz, dissimilarities in roundness and sphericity, and to …
