Nurturing Writing Attitudes Through Collaboration Across The Intermediate Grades, Flora I. Mckenzie
Nurturing Writing Attitudes Through Collaboration Across The Intermediate Grades, Flora I. Mckenzie
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
The problem for this eight-month practicum was that there were 30 intermediate students who had adverse feelings for writing. The problem was documented as a result of responses to a writing survey by Donato (1990). The survey was administered to a group of 71 students. The highest possible score was 30. Ten students from each grade level (third, fourth and fifth) with the lowest scores completed the practicum activities.
Students viewed a film for the first strategy. Following the film, the students were guided through a brainstorming activity. The students' reactions to the film served as the basis for a …
Using Science Related Professionals To Introduce Specific Career Techniques To Improve Interest, Attitude, And Motivation For Science And Science-Related Careers In Eighth-Grade Students, Jewell R. Smith
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
This practicum was designed to assist middle school students in evaluating personal interest, attitude, and motivation toward science and science-related careers. In minimizing the pervasive and prevalent procrastination, students engaged in activities to formulate both future academic and career plans.
The writer secured science-related professionals to introduce specific career techniques that involved student interaction to gain exposure to a science-related career. Through journal writing the students evaluated and synthesized information relative to personal likes, dislikes and interests to develop plans for high school science courses and a possible career path.
Analysis of the results revealed that (a) the interest, attitude, …

Developing And Implementing A Program To Improve Math Achievement At Pepperell Middle School, Benjamin W. Desper Jr
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
This final report describes the development and the implementation of a program to improve student math achievement at Pepperell Middle School. Analysis of academic records indicated 30 percent of the students received a "D" or "F" for the last semester of the 1989-1990 school year. Seventy-three percent of the students retained, were not promoted because of difficulties in math achievement. Total math scores on the Iowa Test of Basic Skills and the Georgia Criterion Referenced Test declined for each grade from the 1988-1989 school year.
Probable causes for the lack of achievement in math were identified as: a possible curriculum …
Revitalizing The Mathematics Program To Improve Student Achievement For First Through Sixth Grade Students, William J. Zipparo
Revitalizing The Mathematics Program To Improve Student Achievement For First Through Sixth Grade Students, William J. Zipparo
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
This report describes a program for improving mathematics achievement and test scores of first-through-sixth-grade students for the specific purpose of obtaining a predetermined state score level on the mathematics subtest of the Comprehensive Test of Basic Skills annual achievement test. Original problem evidence became apparent after the review of the district’s tasting results for students from 1988-89 school year. The Maurica River Township Board of Education voiced concern over the fact that the district students' mathematics achievement level was either below or just slightly above that of the Stata's minimum level of proficiency in mathematics.
An analysis of the problem …

Improving The Physical Fitness Of Fourth Grade Elementary Students, Marguerite D. Durr
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
This report describes the development of a pilot elementary school physical fitness program using six fourth graders as the targeted students. Extensive analysis of available programs was undertaken to determine the appropriate physical fitness program to use for the pilot program. The program selected was the Physical Best, American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (AAHPERO). Surveys were used to determine student perceptions, student knowledge, and teacher observations/perceptions of their students. The results of the surveys agreed with research and resulted in the 4th grade (147 students) being chosen to start the program.

A Cross-Age Tutoring Program To Raise Self-Esteem In Learning Disabled, Regular And Gifted Elementary School Students, Marian J. King
A Cross-Age Tutoring Program To Raise Self-Esteem In Learning Disabled, Regular And Gifted Elementary School Students, Marian J. King
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
This practicum was originally designed to provide teachers with a means of enhancing the self-esteem of learning disabled (LD) students by using them as cross-age tutors in a Kindergarten class. It was assumed that, by engaging them to help younger students, LD tutors would experience a feeling of accomplishment and self-worth, and therefore develop a sense of being capable, useful, and appreciated. It was further assumed that this more positive self-esteem would lead to a healthier social, emotional and intellectual self-perception and behavior. As the project developed, other students (regular and gifted, including whole 5th and 6th grade classes) asked …

This practicum was designed to integrate a Study Skills Program throughout special education classes in a middle school. The major objectives were to develop a variety of instructional strategies to meet the students’ needs in the area of study skills, to foster the teaching of study skills in each subject area by the special education teachers through direct instruction, and by providing specific segments of time for study skills awareness activities in each subject area of the students' core curriculum.
The writer designed and administered a study skills self-assessment inventory to the classified students involved and a staff needs assessment …
Using Educational Technology To Help Retain High-Risk Students In High School Science Class, Harry Ramjus
Using Educational Technology To Help Retain High-Risk Students In High School Science Class, Harry Ramjus
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
The problem to be solved in this practicum was how to assist 73 high-risk youths found in five, low-level, science classes. The problem was caused by academic under-achievement, inappropriate behavior and a low-economic status. The writer designed and implemented several intervention strategies to help retain high-risk students in high school science class. There were five corollary objectives to improve students' academic achievement, increase student attendance and punctuality, reduce student office-referrals, and improve their conduct in the classroom.
The writer used computer assisted instruction, laser video-disk, video-microcomputer, parental involvement and behavioral-modification techniques to help raise students' academic grades, improve their attendance …

A Case Study Of The Weaknesses In Postsecondary Mathematics Problem Solving And A Program To Eliminate Such Deficiencies, Robert E. Cinnamond
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
The purpose of this Major Applied Research Project was to investigate the weaknesses in post-secondary mathematics problem solving and to develop an instructional design that would help mathematics majors become better problem solvers. A case study was conducted including an extensive literary search to determine which strategies were needed to enhance problem solving. Three basic research restrictions were examined: 1. Why do Brescia mathematics majors fail to develop correct cognitive strategy selection during their normal course of study. 2. How can an appropriate course of study be designed to teach proper cognitive strategy selection? 3. How can an appropriate course …
Designing And Implementing A Development Program At Roanoke Valley Christian School., Philip H. Graybeal
Designing And Implementing A Development Program At Roanoke Valley Christian School., Philip H. Graybeal
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
As a ministry of Shenandoah Baptist Church, Roanoke Valley Christian Schools (RVCS), grew since its founding in 1973 to a size of 535 students (K-12) and 31 teachers. The administrative team consisted of the administrator, elementary principal, secondary principal, and part-time learning disability director.
RVCS reached a plateau in its growth pattern as seen in enrollment statistics that showed a difference of no more than 18 students during any one year from the 1983-88 mean enrollment of 535. Records indicated that development was needed in public relations and recruitment materials, facility expansion, and non-tuition funding.
During the process of the …
