Technical Reports
The goal of this project was to develop a clearer understanding of the role that the Gulf Stream system plays in larval fish survival and recruitment in Florida waters. The specific objectives of this study were to:
- Determine whether the biomass of fish larva, other zooplankton, microzooplankton and phytoplankton is higher at the shoreward front of the Gulf Stream than on either side of it.
- Characterize the assemblages of fish larvae predators and prey both at the front and on either side of it.
- Determine if the composition, abundance and size frequency distribution of larval and juvenile fishes in the …

A Plan To Improve Social Studies Curriculum And Attitudes Toward Social Studies Of Elementary School Students, Zara R. Barnhill
A Plan To Improve Social Studies Curriculum And Attitudes Toward Social Studies Of Elementary School Students, Zara R. Barnhill
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
This report describes a program that was designed to improve the social studies curriculum and the attitudes toward social studies in the fourth and fifth grades at J. Paul Beam Elementary School in South Carolina. The problem was that students' scores in these grades had declined or fluctuated in the classroom as evidenced by grades and performance on the Comprehensive Test of Basic Skills (CTBS). This disparity had been documented for the 1987, 1988, and 1989 school years.
Probable causes of the problem were identified as: outdated district curriculum guide, too much dependence on the textbook, lack of importance put …
Improving Reading Scores In The Primary Grades Through A Holistic Hands On Approach, Ronald P. Nordin
Improving Reading Scores In The Primary Grades Through A Holistic Hands On Approach, Ronald P. Nordin
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
This report describes a program for improving reading scores in kindergarten through second grade at elementary school located in a small rural community. Sixty to 70% of all kindergarten students left kindergarten with pronounced signs of developmental delay. These students were one and a half to two years behind in cognitive skills as measured by the San Francisco Children's Hospital Test of Kindergarten/First Grade Readiness Skills.
Analysis of the problem through formal and informal methods revealed students were falling behind in reading for three reasons: teachers' heavy reliance on the use of a skills-based, basal approach; students coming to school …
Improving The Academic Performance Of Low-Achieving Hispanic And Other Seventh Grade Students By Increasing Cultural Awareness And The Use Of Positive Interactions By Teachers, Daniel M. Hanigan
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
In a Southern California junior high school, 12% of the seventh grade class including 30% of the Hispanics enrolled failed to earn 47.5 credits required for promotion to the eighth grade. Probable causes of the failure rate included (a) low teacher expectations for Hispanic and other perceived low-achieving students, (b) instructional practices that failed to actively involve and motivate low-achievers, and (c) lack of awareness and understanding of cultural differences and the needs of Hispanic students.
As an intervention strategy, interdisciplinary teams of English, mathematics, and social studies teachers participated in staff development programs designed to increase awareness and understanding …

Sea Turtle Conservation Program, Broward County, Fl 1992 Report, Curtis M. Burney, Catherine A. Mattison
Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Reports
Since 1978, the Broward County Environmental Protection Department (BCEPD) has provided for the conservation of endangered and threatened sea turtle species within its area of responsibility. Broward County is within the normal nesting areas of three species of sea turtles: the loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta), the green sea turtle (Chelonia mydas) and the leatherback sea turtle (Dermochelys coriacea). The loggerhead is listed as a threatened species, while the green and leatherback are listed as endangered under the U.S. Endangered Species Act, 1973, and Chapter 370, F.S.
Since these statutes strictly forbid any disturbance …

Instructional Use Of Computers For Entry-Level Physical Therapy Education In The United States, Edmund M. Kosmahl
Instructional Use Of Computers For Entry-Level Physical Therapy Education In The United States, Edmund M. Kosmahl
CCAC Theses and Dissertations
Little was known about the value of computer assisted instruction (CAl) for entry-level physical therapy (PT) education. Factors that affect implementation and use of CAl in entry-level PT education had not been identified. Because of this paucity of information, decision-making about the implementation and use of CAl in entry-level PT education had been hampered.
This study used mail questionnaire survey methods to find:
- The extent of use of computer-assisted instruction (CAl) in entry-level physical therapy (PT) education.
- The perceived value of CAl compared to more traditional instructional methods for entry-level PT education.
- What factors affect implementation and use of CAl …
