How Maternal Education Impacts Child Health In Food-Insecure Households In Peru, Sydney Sansone
Undergraduate Student Symposium
Children living in food-insecure homes in poor areas of Peru experience poor health outcomes at greater rates than their counterparts with higher socioeconomic status. The factors that contribute to poor health outcomes can be viewed through the levels of the Socioecological Model. At the interpersonal level, mothers play a unique role in determining the health outcomes of their child(ren). This systematic review aims to synthesize findings from mixed methods studies conducted in poor areas of Peru to determine how maternal education impacts child health. Using data from ten exemplar studies, the level of education of mothers, child health, resources readily …
Improving Health Communication About Recognizing Pediatric Obstructive Sleep Apnea Associated With Down Syndrome, Mahima Dave
Improving Health Communication About Recognizing Pediatric Obstructive Sleep Apnea Associated With Down Syndrome, Mahima Dave
Undergraduate Student Symposium
Down syndrome (DS) is the most prevalent chromosomal disorder in which an extra copy of chromosome 21 disrupts the development of intellectual abilities. Every year, 6,000 babies in the United States are born with DS, which is approximately 1 in every 700 babies (Aagarwal et al., 2019). Their unique physical manifestations place them at high risk for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), a condition in which repeated blockage of the upper airway causes difficulty breathing during sleep (Olson et al., 2011). Nearly 80% of children with DS are afflicted with OSA compared to only 2-5% of the general pediatric population (Chamseddin …

Online Social Environment Impacts Feelings Of Social Connection In Older Adults During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Jade Kushner, Brittany Derynda, Mary Goodyear
Undergraduate Student Symposium
Evidence suggests that nearly one-third of older adults’ experience loneliness and/or social isolation; an increase in these rates during the current pandemic is anticipated. The Lifelong Learning Institute (LLI) at Nova Southeastern University (NSU) in South Florida has worked to engage seniors in fun learning activities and social opportunities since 1977. When “stay at home” orders went into effect in March 2020 the LLI moved to online program delivery via Zoom. To understand the implementation of zoom among LLI members, NSU students, researchers and LLI member advisory committee developed a cross-sectional research study using an online survey that was administered …

Survival And Development Of Zebra Longwing, Heliconius Charithonia, On Native And Non-Native Passion Vines, Passiflora Sp., In South Florida, Madelyn Rinka, Cassidy Loucks, Celina Nelson-Jordan
Undergraduate Student Symposium
Zebra longwing butterflies (Heliconius charithonia) are distributed throughout the southernmost regions of the United States to South America and are abundant across Florida. These heliconian butterflies not only consume nectar, but are also known to feed on pollen, resulting in a longer lifespan than most butterflies. In their larval stage, H. charithonia feed exclusively on Passiflora sp., however larval performance and survival across the diversity of Passion vine species is not well documented. We examined these criteria of zebra longwings from egg to adulthood on two passion vines native to Florida, corky stem (Passiflora suberosa) and …

The immersion and engagement offered throughout VR is demonstrated …
A Statistical Comparison Of Democratic Liberties, Socioeconomic Development, And Effectiveness Of Covid-19 Pandemic Response In Countries Around The World, Angel Vasquez
Undergraduate Student Symposium
The COVID-19 pandemic has shown in full display that state capacity to respond to crises is variable among countries. In this study, the relative performance of 165 countries in containing the pandemic within their borders is assessed and compared with their individual scores on the Freedom Index (FI) and the Human Development Index (HDI) to understand whether the indicators that these indices represent (political freedoms and socioeconomic development) explain the effectiveness of each country’s response to the pandemic. A pandemic performance coefficient (PPPC) was created to quantify their individual performance and treated as the independent variable. Bivariate correlation analyses and …

Effect Of Hdac Inhibitor On Mesenchymal To Epithelial Transition (Met) In Non-Small Lung Cancer Cells (Nsclc), Sanjana Mody, Grace Waldron
Effect Of Hdac Inhibitor On Mesenchymal To Epithelial Transition (Met) In Non-Small Lung Cancer Cells (Nsclc), Sanjana Mody, Grace Waldron
Undergraduate Student Symposium
The epithelial to mesenchymal transition (EMT) is a highly dynamic process. It is also involved in enhancing the tumor invasiveness and metastasis of the cancer cells. Therefore, the generation of tumor cells with stem cell properties plays a significant role in developing resistance to cancer treatment. The reversal of EMT to MET (mesenchymal to epithelial transition) is poorly understood at the present time. Increased mesenchymal marker levels have been associated with increased lung cancer risk. We hypothesized that suberoyl-anilide hydroxamic acid (SAHA, also known as Vorinostat) might promote MET through epigenetic modification such as acetylation and methylation. We analyzed both …
Diet Analysis Of Offshore Istiophorid Billfishes In The Western Atlantic, Emily Salonia
Diet Analysis Of Offshore Istiophorid Billfishes In The Western Atlantic, Emily Salonia
Undergraduate Student Symposium
Istiophorid billfishes are apex predators found in epipelagic tropical and temperate waters worldwide. Managed internationally following population declines due to overfishing, these fishes continue to be targeted by recreational anglers and are caught as bycatch by offshore commercial fisheries targeting tunas, resulting in a slow population recovery. Despite their ecological importance, knowledge of Western Atlantic billfish diets is lacking; no information exists regarding roundscale spearfish (Tetrapturus georgii), for white marlin (Kajikia albida) information is extremely limited, and the last Western Atlantic sailfish (Istiophorus platypterus) diet study was in 1977. To address this knowledge gap, Istiophorid diets …
Differences In Frontonasal Anomalies In Children With And Without An Autism, Matthew Arcona
Differences In Frontonasal Anomalies In Children With And Without An Autism, Matthew Arcona
Undergraduate Student Symposium
Symptoms of Autism Spectrum Disorders can vary by case; however, the core features consist of social and communication deficits, and restrictive or repetitive behaviors. Most research on the etiology of ASD focus on genetic factors and how chromosomal copy number variants (CNVs) affect neurocognitive development. There is much less research on how developmental disturbances could play a role in neurocognitive disorders, such as ASD. Research suggests that due to the synchronous and adjacent development of the frontonasal features and anterior brain, disturbances in one of these pathways affect the other. Frontonasal anomalies such as ear formation, forehead prominence, and eye …

Protonation Of Methyl Phenyl Porphyrin Isomers Using Uv Spectroscopy, Mamiko Swanson, Isabel De Angelis, Harsh Chheda, Rushi Patel, Raahil Shah, Shreya Patel, Maria Ballester Ph.D.
Chemistry and Physics Faculty Proceedings, Presentations, Speeches, Lectures
The protonation of methyl phenyl porphyrin isomers was studied through UV vis spectroscopy using trifluoroacetic acid (TFA), a strong organic acid. Protonation was achieved by titration of the porphyrin in toluene and toluene/methanol (90:10). A wavelength shift from the free base Soret to the protonated Soret confirms the formation of the dication. The resulting UV spectra was used to calculate an apparent pKa value of each free base porphyrin isomer. Addition of methanol to the porphyrin solution decreased the average pKa values of the Soret and Q-bands for each porphyrin. This could be an indication of a stabilizing monocation, not …

Widespread and large populations of the exotic eastern Pacific ophiuroid brittle star Opthiothela mirabilis now occur in southeastern Florida, extending the range of this recently introduced species from southern Brazil northward to the eastern Caribbean Sea and Florida. The Florida brittle stars, representing two lineages, are epibionts on shallow (3-18 m depth), tropical/subtropical plexaurid (e.g., Eunicea spp., Muricea elongata) and gorgoniid (Antillogorgia spp.) octocorals. The scope of this study includes recent distributional records of O. mirabilis in south Florida, field abundances in relation to the cohabiting endemic ctenophore Coeloplana waltoni, behavioral observations of the ophiuroid, ctenophore and …
Over-Complexifying Social Reality: A Critical Exploration Of Systematicity And Rigidification In Ethnographic Practice And Writing, Anson Au
The Qualitative Report
Qualitative methodological development has produced canonical tendencies that over-complexify and fix a fluid and lived social world. Meanwhile, critical theory has produced critiques on methodology but without enough attention to the qualitative tradition. I bridge these gaps by using an Adornoian position to interrogate the concepts of systematicity, rigidification, complexification, and their problems in ethnographic research and qualitative methodology. I conduct an urban ethnography and autoethnography of the metropolitan blasé as a public attitude of indifference to articulate an alternative, quotidian approach to ethnography that better captures social embeddedness, meaning-creation, and how contexts should drive data collection, analysis, and method-selection.

Creatine And Cognitive Functioning: What Is The Role Of Exercise Frequency?, Jonathan B. Banks, Jose Antonio, Amanda S. Holtzman, Mykola Marang, Catherine Weber, Alexsandra Alvarez-Beaton, Aysha Patel, Jaime Tartar
Journal for Sports Neuroscience
Creatine consumption appears to have a positive impact on cognitive function in different populations but the effects of creatine in a young, healthy population are mixed. Additionally, exercise appears to benefit cognitive processes in young and older adults. The present study explored the ways in which exercise frequency may moderate the effect of creatine consumption on working memory, sustained attention, mind wandering, and speed of processing, in a young, healthy, adult population. Forty-two individuals were randomly assigned to a creatine condition (n = 20) or a control condition (n = 22). For each session, participants completed the Symmetry …

The intermediate-sized midwater fauna (fishes, shrimps, and cephalopods; “micronekton” collectively) are dominant components of the pelagic ocean, which is by far the largest ecosystem type on Earth by several metrics (volume, organismal numbers, biomass, and productivity). Deep-pelagic micronekton, those animals residing in the water column below 200 m depth during the day, are the direct link between plankton and oceanic top predators, and through the linked processes of feeding and daily vertical migration facilitate one of Earth's most important ecosystem services to humans, carbon sequestration. Despite increasing recognition of this importance, a disconnect exists between stewardship and human impact; only …

Discovering dominant epitopes for T cells, particularly CD4+ T cells, in human immune-mediated diseases remains a significant challenge. Here, we used bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) cells from HLA-DP2-expressing patients with chronic beryllium disease (CBD), a debilitating granulomatous lung disorder characterized by accumulations of beryllium (Be)-specific CD4+ T cells in the lung. We discovered lung resident CD4+ T cells that expressed a disease-specific public CDR3β T cell receptor motif and were specific to Be-modified self-peptides derived from C-C motif ligands 4 (CCL4) and 3 (CCL3). HLA-DP2-CCL/Be tetramer staining confirmed that these chemokine-derived peptides represented major antigenic targets in CBD. …
State Of Satiation Partially Regulates The Dynamics Of Vertical Migration, Ryan P. Bos, Tracey Sutton, Tamara Frank
State Of Satiation Partially Regulates The Dynamics Of Vertical Migration, Ryan P. Bos, Tracey Sutton, Tamara Frank
Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles
Vertical migrations into shallower waters at night are beneficial for migrators as they reduce predation risk and allow migrators to encounter a higher density of prey. Nevertheless, ocean acoustics data and trawl data have shown that a portion of some vertically migrating populations remain at depth and do not migrate. One hypothesis for this phenomenon is the Hunger-Satiation hypothesis, which in part states that the non-migrating portion of the migrating species-assemblage refrains from migrating if they have full or partially full stomachs from daytime or nocturnal feeding. However, stomach fullness of the non-migrating subpopulation compared to the migrating portion has …

The accuracy and precision of satellite sea surface temperature (SST) products in nearshore coastal waters are not well known, owing to a lack of in-situ data available for validation. It has been suggested that recreational watersports enthusiasts, who immerse themselves in nearshore coastal waters, be used as a platform to improve sampling and fill this gap. One tool that has been used worldwide by surfers is the Smartfin, which contains a temperature sensor integrated into a surfboard fin. If tools such as the Smartfin are to be considered for satellite validation work, they must be carefully evaluated against state-of-the-art techniques …
The Pedagogical Representation Of Mass Functions With Lego And Their Origin, Stefan Kautsch
The Pedagogical Representation Of Mass Functions With Lego And Their Origin, Stefan Kautsch
Chemistry and Physics Faculty Articles
We promote the teaching of mass functions as an integral part of an interdisciplinary science education. Mass functions characterize the frequency distributions of objects with different masses on all cosmic scales. We intend to enhance experiential learning of this concept with a creative LEGO brick experiment for a diverse student audience. To our surprise, the LEGO mass function is not only qualitatively but also quantitatively comparable to mass functions found across the universe. We also discuss the relation between gravitation and mass distributions as a possible explanation for the continuity of the universal mass function.

Washback Of An English Language Assessment System In A Malaysian University Foundation Programme, Umed Bokiev, Arshad Abd. Samad
The Qualitative Report
Washback refers to the influence of language assessment on teaching and learning. In contrast to the wealth of studies involving external large-scale language examinations, scant research has been conducted to explore the influence of internal language assessment on instruction, particularly in the context of a university foundation programme. This qualitative study investigated the washback effects of an English language assessment system (ELAS) on the teaching and learning of English in a Malaysian university foundation programme. Apart from an in-depth analysis of official documents on the ELAS, we conducted individual semi-structured interviews with three curriculum and assessment developers, three English language …

A Composite Textual Phenomenological Approach To Cures Versus Traditional Laboratory Experiences, Amie S. Sommers, Dana Richter-Egger, Christine E. Cutucache
The Qualitative Report
Here we present unique perspectives from undergraduate students (n=3) in STEM who have taken both a traditional laboratory iteration and a Course-based Undergraduate Research Experience (CURE) iteration of the same introductory chemistry course. CUREs can be effective models for integrating research in courses and fostering student learning gains. Via phenomenological interviews, we asked students to describe the differences in their perspectives, feelings, and experiences between a traditional lab guided by a lab manual and a CURE. We found that (i.) critical thinking/problem solving, (ii.) group work/collaboration, (iii.) student-led research questions and activities, and (iv.) time management are the top four …

Atlantic Sailfish (Istiophorus Albicans) Distribution Off The East Coast Of Florida From 2003 To 2018 In Response To Sea Surface Temperature, Meredith M. Pratt
Mako: NSU Undergraduate Student Journal
The Atlantic sailfish (Istiophorus albicans) ranges from 40°N to 40°S in the Western Atlantic Ocean and has great economic and recreational value for sport fishers. Off the east coast of Florida, recreational fishing boats often target this species due to its size, speed and strength. This project aimed to determine the relationship between sea surface temperature (SST) and the distribution of Atlantic sailfish caught and released over a fifteen-year period (2003 to 2018). Tagging information was collected from The Billfish Foundation and NOAA who have the most extensive programs for billfish. Using the time and location of each …
