Survey Of Leadership Programs: Valued Characteristics Of Leadership Within The Deaf Community, Deborah Kamm-Larew, Marcia Lamkin

JADARA

This study surveyed leadership programs operating for and by the Deaf community through questionnaire and interview data. Three categories of leadership development were identified as currently operating in the United States for people who are Deaf and Hard of Hearing: youth leadership programs, special interest mentoring groups, and formal leadership training programs focused on professional development and leadership skills. In addition, this study identified common leadership traits and training methods within these programs. Using a randomized list of leadership traits, valued characteristics were identified. The traits chosen most often were empowerment, advocacy, and decision making skills.

Improving Knowledge Management Programs Using Marginal Utility In A Metric Space Generated By Conceptual Graphs, Jeffrey A. Schiffel Jan 2008

Improving Knowledge Management Programs Using Marginal Utility In A Metric Space Generated By Conceptual Graphs, Jeffrey A. Schiffel

CCAC Theses and Dissertations

Knowledge management has emerged as a field of endeavor that blends a systems approach with methods drawn from organizational management and learning. In contrast, knowledge representation, a branch of artificial intelligence, is grounded in formal methods. Research in the separate behavioral and the structural disciplines – knowledge management and knowledge engineering - has not traditionally cross-pollinated. This has prevented the development of many practical practices useful in organizations. Organization managers - line and senior - lack guidance in where to direct improvement efforts targeted at specific groups of company knowledge workers. Demonstrated here is Knowledge Improvement Measurement Space (KIMS), a …

The Qualitative Report

This inquiry examined graduate students ’ and preservice teachers’ e-mail communication as they made decisions about supporting the instructional needs of children at-risk in a community of practice summer literacy camp. The correspondence gradually evolved from impersonal to interpersonal communication over a ten-week time span, and influenced the preservice teachers’ responses. S even themes were identified in the graduate students’ messages that ranged from questioning and complaining to promoting collaboration. The study illuminates the developmental stages of interpersonal relationships and demonstrates the reciprocal nature of interactive dialogue through the medium of e-mail communication. Conclusions are that long-term e-mail exchanges can …

Linguistic Research Strategies Versus Quantitative Research Strategies--Different Roles, Different Results, Joseph Yeager, Linda Sommer Dec 2007

Linguistic Research Strategies Versus Quantitative Research Strategies--Different Roles, Different Results, Joseph Yeager, Linda Sommer

The Qualitative Report

Selecting a statistical framework for a behavioral study has profoundly different results than does a linguistically framed research strategy. The linguistic strategy overcomes many limitations inherent in statistical strategies and offers more meaningful results. Inferential statistical studies often discuss how the findings “explain” the results of the study. Seldom mentioned is the fact that statistical explanations occur in terms of the framework of statistical methodology. Statistical explanations do not explain anything in terms of the actual behavior at issue and do not lead to subsequent interventions about the motivated choices for a target group. Linguistic strategies work especially well if …

The Construction Of Ethnic Identity Of Balkan Muslim Immigrants: A Narrativization Of Personal Experiences, Maya Miskovic Sep 2007

The Construction Of Ethnic Identity Of Balkan Muslim Immigrants: A Narrativization Of Personal Experiences, Maya Miskovic

The Qualitative Report

This paper explores the construction of ethnic identity in the first generation of Balkan Muslim immigrants now living in the Chicago metropolitan area, with the aim of showing the intricacy of global events (civil wars in the homeland and war on terror in the host society) and local contexts (meaning- making occurring during the interviews). In-depth interviews conducted with three men were treated as a series of narratives in order to emphasize the importance of personal meaning-making. With awareness that “Muslim” can denote various subjectivities, this paper proposes research that theorizes the constant shift of identities, the interplay between ascribed …

Making Use Of Bilingual Interview Data: Some Experiences From The Field, Nelofer Halai Sep 2007

Making Use Of Bilingual Interview Data: Some Experiences From The Field, Nelofer Halai

The Qualitative Report

This paper describes the challenges faced, and rules devised, while dealing with bilingual interview data as part of a life history study of a female science teacher’s conceptions of the nature of science while teaching in a school in Karachi. The interview data generated was both in Urdu and English, which underwent a number of processes (transcription, translation, and transliteration) to evolve into “interim texts,” to finally become a part of the data analysis process. I have called these translated materials “transmuted texts,” as they reflect the original, but have been recreated. This paper is significant because as globalization connects …

Linguistic Alternatives To Quantitative Research Strategies Part One: How Linguistic Mechanisms Advance Research, Joseph Yeager, Linda Sommer Sep 2007

Linguistic Alternatives To Quantitative Research Strategies Part One: How Linguistic Mechanisms Advance Research, Joseph Yeager, Linda Sommer

The Qualitative Report

Combining psycholinguistic technologies and systems analysis created advances in motivational profiling and numerous new behavioral engineering applications. These advances leapfrog many mainstream statistical research methods, producing superior research results via cause-effect language mechanisms. Entire industries explore motives ranging from opinion polling to persuasive marketing campaigns, and individual psychotherapy to executive performance coaching. Qualitative research tools such as questionnaires, interviews, and focus groups are now transforming static language data into dynamic linguistic systems measurement technology. Motivational mechanisms, especially linguistic mechanisms, allow specific changes within a motive’s operations. This includes both the choices the intervention creates and its end-goal. Predictable behavior changes …

Linguistic Mechanisms Cause Rapid Behavior Change Part Two: How Linguistic Frames Affect Motivation, Joseph Yeager, Linda Sommer Sep 2007

Linguistic Mechanisms Cause Rapid Behavior Change Part Two: How Linguistic Frames Affect Motivation, Joseph Yeager, Linda Sommer

The Qualitative Report

Written and spoken language contains inherent mechanisms driving motivation. Accessing and modifying psycholinguistic mechanisms, links language frames to changes in behavior within the context of motivational profiling. For example, holding an object like an imported apple feels safe until one is informed it was grown in a toxic waste dump. Instantly linguistic processing changes the apple’s meaning to dangerous. Qualitative data change from static into dynamic measures of motivational changes. Linguistic cause-effect mechanisms dramatically enhance the results and meaning of qualitative research methods, resulting new applications for behavioral engineering, including opinion polling, persuasive marketing campaigns, individual psychotherapy and executive performance …

We present an empirical study of competency development in a new joint venture, between a western firm and a Russian firm. Using transaction cost and knowledge management approaches, we propose working models for exploring the competency development dimension of a market entry strategy of the western firm in Russia. We consider organizational competency as measurable know-how, skills, behaviors, and attitudes of key employees that allows the company to meet their performance goals. Using a triangular case study approach the paper focuses on the well-site supervisor competency building process within the joint venture. We observe the critical elements of the competency …

The Role Of Social Capital In Creating Effective Global Supply Chains, Susan I. Scott, Ruth Clarke Jun 2007

The Role Of Social Capital In Creating Effective Global Supply Chains, Susan I. Scott, Ruth Clarke

HCBE Faculty Presentations

In this paper we examine the relationship between the concept of social capital and the creation of effective global supply chains. Recent literature cites the effective global supply chain as a source of competitive advantage for firms competing in the global economy. Evidence exists that global firms now compete through the entire supply chain for each industry, raising the bar for strategic consideration. A global supply chain is comprised of multiple organizations, geographically dispersed, but linked by economic transactions, which enable the root firm to satisfy customer needs. The increase in information technology management is critical in coordinating the work …

E-Banking In Emerging Markets: Shifting The Competitive Landscape, Jennifer Isern, Ruth Clarke Jun 2007

E-Banking In Emerging Markets: Shifting The Competitive Landscape, Jennifer Isern, Ruth Clarke

HCBE Faculty Presentations

This paper discusses the dynamics of competition in the financial services industry, and theories of competition that explain sometimes counter-intuitive effects observed over the last fifty years. We present arguments here that new forces are taking hold in the financial services industry that may change existing competition paradigms. Electronic banking is thriving in Japan, Europe, and the U.S. as customers click their mouse, press telephone keys, and slide cards to conduct their banking. Increasingly, banks and other financial service providers are starting to launch many of these same innovations in developing countries. Emerging markets are in the position of developing …

Cranberries: The Use Of A Naturally Occurring Compound To Fight Against Periodontopathogens, Debbie L. Darius Mar 2007

Cranberries: The Use Of A Naturally Occurring Compound To Fight Against Periodontopathogens, Debbie L. Darius

Undergraduate Student Symposium

This literature review focuses on the use of a naturally occurring compound found in cranberries (proanthocyanidins) to fight against periodontopathogens and thus the development of periodontal disease. Periodontopathogens and their invasion in gingival tissues and periodontium is the usual cause of periodontitis. Oral microorganisms coaggregate to become major bacterial complexes, allowing their proteases to digest similar components of the gingival crevicular fluid located in subgingival sites. The most common microbe associated with this disease is P. gingivalis where its proteolytic enzymes gingipains and dipeptidyl peptidases IV break down collagen and create large supplements of iron for the bacteria. However, recent …

Utilization Of Passive Acoustic Tracking To Determine Artificial Habitat Use And Movement Of Nurse Sharks, Ginglymostoma Cirratum, Michael Palozzola Mar 2007

Utilization Of Passive Acoustic Tracking To Determine Artificial Habitat Use And Movement Of Nurse Sharks, Ginglymostoma Cirratum, Michael Palozzola

Undergraduate Student Symposium

The ecological characteristics of many cryptic and evasive marine vertebrates, such as sharks, are widely unknown, largely, due to the inability to efficiently monitor and track them over extended periods of time. Recent advances in ultrasonic acoustic telemetry now allow scientists to collect data on these highly elusive predators more efficiently then ever before. Marine animals, such as the nurse shark, Ginglymostoma cirratum, have been observed at artificial reefs, such as sunken vessels, but how long they spend at or near these habitats is unknown. This research aims to determine the habitat use of the nurse shark, Ginglymostoma cirratum …

The Synthesis Of Building Blocks For Metal-Organic Frameworks (Mof): Potential For Gaseous Fuel Storage, Richard C. Wheeler Mar 2007

The Synthesis Of Building Blocks For Metal-Organic Frameworks (Mof): Potential For Gaseous Fuel Storage, Richard C. Wheeler

Undergraduate Student Symposium

There is currently considerable interest in the use of hydrogen as an energy transport medium. While hydrogen provides clean combustion, storage and transport raises complex engineering challenges, resulting in potentially expensive design restraints. Current research indicates that transition metal complexes of mononucleating ligands, such as 1,3-bis(pyridylimino)benz(f)isoindoline (NBAII), spontaneously form uniform channels in the crystalline matrix that may be suitable for hydrogen storage. Furthermore, the alteration of the ligand substituents may yield the ability to tailor the shape and size of the crystalline channel to optimize the geometric configuration. Specifically, the x-ray crystallography of the divalent copper complex of NBAII indicates …

The Effects Of Academic Stress On Immune Functioning, Maureen Green, Lara Murphy Mar 2007

The Effects Of Academic Stress On Immune Functioning, Maureen Green, Lara Murphy

Undergraduate Student Symposium

Stress associated with academic examinations is thought to cause immunosuppression in students. However, it is currently unclear whether the immunosupression associated with academic pressure is related to increases in the stress hormone, cortisol. Indeed, it is possible that factors independent of cortisol may control the emotional and immune response. In the current study, we were interested in untangling the complex relationship between academic stress and immunusupression through comparing both subjective and objective measures of academic stress and immune functioning. Students were assessed before, during, and after an academic examination period. During each assessment, self-reported subjective reports of stress were collected …

Dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), a by-product of the wood industry, has been in used as a commercial solvent since 1953. It is also one of the most used but least understood pharmaceutical agents of our time. In the United States, DMSO has Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval only for use as a preservative of organs for transplant. In the research laboratories DMSO is commonly used as a vehicle to solubilize and water insoluble drugs and to increase the membrane permeability of drugs during in vitrotreatments. In cell culture laboratories DMSO is also used as a cryoprotectant to help protect the …

Post-Absurdism: Ionesco And The Juxtaposition Of Absurdism And Postmodernism, Elizabeth B. Harbaugh Mar 2007

Post-Absurdism: Ionesco And The Juxtaposition Of Absurdism And Postmodernism, Elizabeth B. Harbaugh

Undergraduate Student Symposium

The purpose of this paper is to situate Eugène Ionesco’s dramatic works within an historical, literary, and theoretical framework. By examining the influences of both absurdism and postmodernism on Eugène Ionesco’s work, we can discern specific cultural and philosophical issues concerning Europeans, artists, and the general world population following the Second World War. Eugène Ionesco’s works are ultimately extremely historically and theatrically significant and worthy of study, despite a contemporary distance from absurdism as a worthy field of study.
