"I Can See You": An Autoethnography Of My Teacher-Student Self, Erika França De Souza Vasconcelos Mar 2011

"I Can See You": An Autoethnography Of My Teacher-Student Self, Erika França De Souza Vasconcelos

The Qualitative Report

This article is an autoethnographic investigation of my second-nature teacher-student self. What has made me into the teacher I am? What makes me the teacher I am? In order to address these questions, I draw upon my memories of my own teachers and students. As I portray my teaching-learning experiences as textual "snapshots," I find that my most cherished memories come from when my teachers acknowledged my presence and listened to me, and when I have been in dialogue with my own students. My autoethnographic journey ends up linking the personal to pedagogical theory centering attention to relationships between teachers …

Clear And Engaging: A Review Of Sidnell's Conversation Analysis: An Introduction, Oksana Parylo Mar 2011

Clear And Engaging: A Review Of Sidnell's Conversation Analysis: An Introduction, Oksana Parylo

The Qualitative Report

Conversation Analysis: An Introduction by Jack Sidnell is a concise and clear primer to describing, analyzing, and understanding human talk. Combining theoretical descriptions and analysis of transcribed conversations, Sidnell (2010) explains the elements of conversational organization: turn-taking, action and understanding, preference, sequence, repair, turn construction, stories, and openings and closings. In addition, Sidnell opens the discussion about the role of topic and context in conversation analysis. Conversation Analysis: An Introduction is a good guide to conducting conversation analysis. This book is appropriate for those who are not familiar with conversation analysis and want to get a better understanding of this …

The Experiment-Based Knew-It-All-Along Effect In The Qualitative Light Of Narrativity, Marek Palasinski Mar 2011

The Experiment-Based Knew-It-All-Along Effect In The Qualitative Light Of Narrativity, Marek Palasinski

The Qualitative Report

In contrast to the extant quantitative studies on the hindsight effect, the present narrative analysis looks at it from a rare angle of talk-in-interaction. Fifty one-to-one interviews were done with five student groups, each of which was presented with a scenario ending with one factual outcome and three alternative outcomes that actually did not happen. Confirming the already proven role of the provided event outcome in overestimating the probability of its occurrence, this study expands the current understanding of the processes neglected by the research on the hindsight effect. It does so by highlighting the strategic use of vagueness, self-empowerment …

Is A Picture Worth A Thousand Words? Using Mind Maps To Facilitate Participant Recall In Qualitative Research, Johannes Wheeldon Mar 2011

Is A Picture Worth A Thousand Words? Using Mind Maps To Facilitate Participant Recall In Qualitative Research, Johannes Wheeldon

The Qualitative Report

Mind maps may provide a new means to gather unsolicited data through qualitative research designs. In this paper, I explore the utility of mind maps through a project designed to uncover the experiences of Latvians involved in a legal technical assistance project. Based on a sample of 19 respondents, the depth and detail of the responses between the groups were compared. Those who first completed mind maps identified a greater number of unique concepts and provided more in depth responses about their experience in later interviews. Participants suggested that by first completing a mind map, they were better able to …

Home Literacy Factors Affecting Emergent Literacy Skills, Robyn Valerie Cassel

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study is to identify factors in the home literacy environment using the Stony Brook Family Reading Survey (SBFRS) in order to understand the extent to which these factors predict phonemic awareness and other basic reading skills, as assessed by selected subtests from the Woodcock-Johnson III (WJ III). The present study used archival data to examine the home literacy habits of a sample of parents and preschool children ages 3-5 years (range in months= 36-67) from a private and a public preschool with a combination of high- and low-income backgrounds and various ethnicities. Using exploratory factor analyses …

Communicating Qualitative Analytical Results Following Grice's Conversational Maxims, Jan S. Chenail, Ronald J. Chenail Jan 2011

Communicating Qualitative Analytical Results Following Grice's Conversational Maxims, Jan S. Chenail, Ronald J. Chenail

The Qualitative Report

Conducting qualitative research can be seen as a developing communication act through which researchers engage in a variety of conversations. Articulating the results of qualitative data analysis results can be an especially challenging part of this scholarly discussion for qualitative researchers. To help guide investigators through this difficult communicative process, the authors suggest Grice's (1989) Conversational Maxims of Quantity, Quality, Relation, and Manner as general guidelines to follow when formulating and presenting findings in qualitative research products as well as basic assumptions to guide readers when judging the quality of result representations.

Facilitating Coherence Across Qualitative Research Papers, Ronald J. Chenail, Maureen Duffy, Sally St. George, Dan Wulff Jan 2011

Facilitating Coherence Across Qualitative Research Papers, Ronald J. Chenail, Maureen Duffy, Sally St. George, Dan Wulff

The Qualitative Report

Bringing the various elements of qualitative research papers into coherent textual patterns presents challenges for authors and editors alike. Although individual sections such as presentation of the problem, review of the literature, methodology, results, and discussion may each be constructed in a sound logical and structural sense, the alignment of these parts into a coherent mosaic may be lacking in many qualitative research manuscripts. In this paper, four editors of The Qualitative Report present how they collaborate with authors to facilitate improvement papers' coherence in such areas as co-relating title, abstract, and the paper proper; coordinating the method presented with …

Evaluation Of Response To Intervention As A Method Of Improving Student Achievement, Ronald Bruce Farquharson Jan 2011

Evaluation Of Response To Intervention As A Method Of Improving Student Achievement, Ronald Bruce Farquharson

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

This applied dissertation was designed to evaluate if implementation of the Response to Intervention (RTI) model had an effect on student academic gains at the target school. The problem that prompted this study was that information on the effectiveness of the RTI model had not yet been determined. The reauthorization of the Individuals With Disabilities Education Act allowed the use of the RTI model as a viable alternative for identifying students who may be experiencing academic difficulties rather than the traditional wait-and-fail model. Data and state assessment scores for sixth-grade students indicated that remediation was necessary. The RTI model allows …

Methodology In Seeking Stakeholder Perceptions Of Effective Technical Oral Presentations: An Exploratory Pilot Study, Ena Bhattacharyya, Arun Patil, Rajeswary Appacutty Sargunan Nov 2010

Methodology In Seeking Stakeholder Perceptions Of Effective Technical Oral Presentations: An Exploratory Pilot Study, Ena Bhattacharyya, Arun Patil, Rajeswary Appacutty Sargunan

The Qualitative Report

Engineering communication studies indicate the importance of oral presentations as an indispensable component of workplace oral communication activities; however, since there is limited literature regarding stakeholder perceptions of effective presentation skills and attributes in technical oral presentations or final year engineering project presentations, the authors conducted a mixed method to seek the perceptions of selected members of the academic and professional engineering community involved in technical oral presentations regarding effective presentation skills and attributes required in these technical oral presentations. The paper describes the quantitative and qualitative research methods employed to seek participant feedback involved in the study.

In Praise Of Irrationality: Self, "East" And "West" In Greek Teachers' Speeches On National Day Commemorations, Lucianna Benincasa Sep 2010

In Praise Of Irrationality: Self, "East" And "West" In Greek Teachers' Speeches On National Day Commemorations, Lucianna Benincasa

The Qualitative Report

In this qualitative study of school discourse on national day commemorations, focus is on the "social creativity strategies" through which group members can improve their social identity. Discourse analysis was carried out on thirty-nine teachers' speeches delivered in Greek schools between 1998 and 2004. The speakers scorn rationality and logic, stereotypically attributed to "the West" (a "West" which is perceived not to include Greece), as cold and not human. The Greeks' successful national struggles are presented instead as the result of irrationality. They claim irrationality to be the most human and thus the most valuable quality, which places Greece first …

The Four Key Factors That Drive Successful Decisions, Joseph Yeager, Linda Sommer Sep 2010

The Four Key Factors That Drive Successful Decisions, Joseph Yeager, Linda Sommer

The Qualitative Report

The mechanisms of language operate as the vehicles for motivation, thinking and deciding. Language is a replica, a model, a representational map of reality. In the same way that a flawed roadmap will misrepresent reality and mislead a traveler, a flawed linguistic rationale will mislead a decision maker in any situation. In high-stakes situations that occur in globalized organizations, such as the current economic meltdown, the importance and consequences of flawed linguistic rationales are obvious. Simple suggestions for self examination of linguistic rationales are offered.

“The Problem From Hell”: Examining The Role Of Peace And Conflict Studies For Genocide Intervention And Prevention, Paul Cormier, Peter Karari, Alka Kumar, Robin Neustaeter, Jodi Read, Jessica Senehi

Peace and Conflict Studies

Genocide is one of the most challenging problems of our age. In her book, “A Problem from Hell:” America and the Age of Genocide, Samantha Power (2002) argues that the United States, while in a position to intervene in genocide, has lacked the will to do so, and therefore it is incumbent on the U.S. citizenry to pressure their government to act. This article reviews how the topic of genocide raises questions along the fault lines of the field of Peace and Conflict Studies (PACS). In this article, a framework is provided to examine genocide and responses to it. This …

Innovative Data Collection Strategies In Qualitative Research, Anthony J. Onwuegbuzie, Nancy L. Leech, Kathleen M.T. Collins

The Qualitative Report

This article provides an innovative meta-framework comprising strategies designed to guide qualitative data collection in the 21st century. We present a meta-framework comprising strategies for collecting data from interviews, focus groups, observations, and documents/material culture. We present a template for collecting nonverbal data during interviews and discuss the concept of debriefing the interviewer. We identify types of data that can be collected in focus groups in addition to the actual statements made by the participants and provide templates for categorizing these data. Also, we outline the role that social networking websites can play in focus group interviews. Further, we provide …

A Qualitative Research On Portfolio Keeping In English As A Foreign Language Writing, Selami Aydin May 2010

A Qualitative Research On Portfolio Keeping In English As A Foreign Language Writing, Selami Aydin

The Qualitative Report

Little attention has been paid to the problems about portfolio keeping in English as a foreign language (EFL) writing, while the existing literature mostly focuses on the effects of portfolios on writing skills of learners, rather than those of teachers or pre-service teachers. This study aims to investigate the problems encountered and contributions of portfolios to the language skills of EFL pre-service teachers. The sample group consists of 39 pre-service teachers; a background questionnaire, interviews, a survey, and essays were used for data collection. The results indicate that portfolios significantly contribute to the writing skills, and that there exist potential …

Collage Life Story Elicitation Technique: A Representational Technique For Scaffolding Autobiographical Memories, Gertina J. Van Schalkwyk May 2010

Collage Life Story Elicitation Technique: A Representational Technique For Scaffolding Autobiographical Memories, Gertina J. Van Schalkwyk

The Qualitative Report

A basic premise in narrative therapy and inquiry is that life story telling is a mechanism by which experiences are rendered meaningful within some form of structure. However, narrative inquiry has to take cognisance of difficulties ensuing from discursive practices for different populations when eliciting their life stories. In this article I explicate a unique method, the Collage Life story Elicitation Technique (CLET), geared towards scaffolding life story remembering. Based on the theoretical underpinnings of social constructionism (Gergen, 2000), symbolic interactionism (Berg, 2009) and performative strategies in social science research the CLET provides a mode of expression and narrative performance …

Boxed In: Examining Faulkner's Linguistic Silhouette Of Addie's Interment, Amanda Allen Thompson Apr 2010

Boxed In: Examining Faulkner's Linguistic Silhouette Of Addie's Interment, Amanda Allen Thompson

Undergraduate Student Symposium

Known for his immensely multifunctional use of the English language, William Faulkner's As I Lay Dying is a novel of fractionalized perspectives and boundless dialectal imagery. This story is constructed around the death of Addie Bundren. Its chapters are stories, memories, and ruminations of the people surrounding her-both in life and the days after. Yet only one chapter is dedicated to her own words, her own account, her own voice. It is her chapter on which this paper focuses. By dissecting the few pages allotted for her, and by examining Faulkner's own linguistic and psychological construction, we may better understand …

Linguistics Out Loud: The Uses Of Jargon In Online Communities, Brittany Eisenhart Apr 2010

Linguistics Out Loud: The Uses Of Jargon In Online Communities, Brittany Eisenhart

Undergraduate Student Symposium

Jargon is community-specific language that is often criticized for being confusing and exclusionary. But it serves a useful social function as well, enabling easy identification of group members, conveying community values, and streamlining internal communication. Past research on jargon has focused on face-to-face communities, especially on occupational groups such as the military and on spatially concentrated populations such as prison inmates. This paper seeks to understand how online communication has affected the development and distribution of jargon, and how various online communities use jargon. New technologies are a common source of linguistic change. The New Oxford American Dictionary even named …

Speech And Language Characteristics In Kabuki Syndrome, Parul Malik, Anuradha Sharma, Sachin Sakhuja, Sanjay Munjal, Naresh K. Panda

Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice

The aim of this study was to delineate the language difficulties in Kabuki Syndrome. At presentation, the child with Kabuki Syndrome had waddling gait, dolicocephaly, and frontal bossing. On administering an Indian standardized test (Linguistic Profile Test), different aspects of spontaneous language production were analysed. Receptive language skills were within normal limits, but expressive language skills showed deficits in semantic and syntactic areas. Articulation errors appeared mainly due to poor oral-motor coordination and hypotonia. A dull flat pattern of speech was characteristic to the child.

Don't Tease Me, I'M Working: Examining Humor In A Midwestern Organization Using Ethnography Of Communication, Ajay K. Ojha, Taimmy L. Holmes Mar 2010

Don't Tease Me, I'M Working: Examining Humor In A Midwestern Organization Using Ethnography Of Communication, Ajay K. Ojha, Taimmy L. Holmes

The Qualitative Report

Within organizations, the communicative phenomenon of humor is commonplace. Humorous talk is just as important and frequent to regular discourse that takes place between organizational members. In this inquiry we examine humor as a particular way of communicating between members of a small Midwestern United States organization. Specifically, we examine how three functions of humor (i.e., joking, sarcasm, and teasing) are used amongst members during normal business hours (8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.). Using ethnography of communication, we conduct both fieldwork and interviews discovering that this organization exemplifies humor as a socially constructed phenomenon to complete the typical workday.
