Student Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

A thesis submitted to the College of Dental Medicine of Nova Southeastern University of the degree of Master of Science in Dentistry.

Objectives: To determine the amount of initial fluoride release from four orthodontic bonding systems over a period of four weeks, and then to subject these materials to an external source of fluoride for recharge in order to measure the amount of fluoride re-release over another four-week interval. Additionally the surface morphology of these materials was analyzed under the scanning electron microscope in order to identify microscopic changes in the materials that may have occurred during the experiment. Evaluation Of Critical Parameters Of Low Level Laser Irradiation On Human Osteoblast Cell Proliferation And Differentiation, Samuel Dean Waddoups Jan 2012

Evaluation Of Critical Parameters Of Low Level Laser Irradiation On Human Osteoblast Cell Proliferation And Differentiation, Samuel Dean Waddoups

Student Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Abstract

Orthodontic tooth movement is a biological response to a mechanical force. One of the challenges in orthodontics is obtaining desired tooth movement during treatment. Accelerating tooth movement and decreasing demands on anchorage can reduce treatment times and overall satisfaction for patient and doctor. Low-level laser therapy (LLLT) is emerging as a technology that may decrease orthodontic treatment time. Many in vitro and in vivo studies have reported the effects of low level lasers at random time points and energy densities. None of the studies have optimized the dose required for osteoblast proliferation and differentiation. The purpose of this study …

Ptsd And Women Warriors: Causes, Controls, And A Congressional Cure, Olympia Duhart

Faculty Scholarship

Women comprise the fastest growing segment of the veteran population. Among the 1.8 million female veterans, more than 230,000 women have served in Iraq or Afghanistan. More than 750 women have been wounded in action; 137 have been killed. By the military’s own estimates, almost 20 percent of female veterans are returning home with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (“PTSD”). Research suggests that women veterans returning from Iraq are more likely to report mental health concerns – including PTSD, depression and suicidal thoughts -- than their male counterparts. The prevalence of PTSD among women in the United States Armed Forces is …

Psychological Consultation In Rehabilitation, Jihong Park, Alan Nasypany Jan 2012

Psychological Consultation In Rehabilitation, Jihong Park, Alan Nasypany

Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice

Patients’ emotional well-being highly affects the outcomes of rehabilitation. Psychological interventions enhance the rehabilitation process. We describe a normal rehabilitation curve in which injured patients experience a cycle of emotional highs and lows. We also suggest a four-step consulting strategy to address these emotional changes during the rehabilitation process: (1) In which stage of change is the patient? (2) Does the clinician know the patient’s personality? (3) What are the goals of the patients and the clinicians? and (4) Does the patient adhere and stay motivated? Clinicians should explain the rehabilitation curve and use the four step strategy, so that …

Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice

Purpose. Undergraduate students interested in health careers often possess limited knowledge regarding the scope ofpractice of various health professions, particularly in allied health. Because of this, students sometimes enter a course of study in a field that is not compatible with their career plans or abilities. Ten Points To Address When Publishing A Manuscript, Angelia Gamer, Angela Morey, Gongchao Yang, Fazlay Faruque

Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice

The completion of a carefully planned and time consuming research project is a milestone for many researchers; however, the journey does not end there. The next phase involves sharing that knowledge with the scientific community at large. A published manuscript describing the research findings allows others to learn from and expound on that information so that society ultimately benefits. The preparation of a manuscript requires much time and careful consideration. There are many principles to apply in order to make sure that a manuscript is accepted for publication. Authors must maintain their sense of purpose throughout the publication process in …

A Comparison Of Users' Personal Information Sharing Awareness, Habits, And Practices In Social Networking Sites And E-Learning Systems, Albert Ball Jan 2012

A Comparison Of Users' Personal Information Sharing Awareness, Habits, And Practices In Social Networking Sites And E-Learning Systems, Albert Ball

CCAC Theses and Dissertations

Although reports of identity theft continue to be widely published, users continue to post an increasing amount of personal information online, especially within social networking sites (SNS) and e-learning systems (ELS). Research has suggested that many users lack awareness of the threats that risky online personal information sharing poses to their personal information. However, even among users who claim to be aware of security threats to their personal information, actual awareness of these security threats is often found to be lacking. Although attempts to raise users' awareness about the risks of sharing their personal information have become more common, it …

Incorporating Personal Health Records Into The Disease Management Of Rural Heart Failure Patients, Karen Baron Jan 2012

Incorporating Personal Health Records Into The Disease Management Of Rural Heart Failure Patients, Karen Baron

CCAC Theses and Dissertations

Personal Health Records (PHRs) allow patients to access and in some cases manage their own health records. Their potential benefits include access to health information, enhanced asynchronous communication between patients and clinicians, and convenience of online appointment scheduling and prescription refills. Potential barriers to PHR use include lack of computer and internet access, poor computer or health literacy, security concerns, and provider disengagement. PHRs may help those living in rural areas and those with chronic conditions such as heart failure, monitor and manage their disease, communicate with their health care team and adhere to clinical recommendations. To provide some much …

Exploring Email Letter Writing To Augment Therapy Relationships With Clients Who Self-Injure, Babette A. Rosabal

Department of Family Therapy Dissertations and Applied Clinical Projects

The use of social technologies continues to grow at a rapid pace. Such technologies free individuals to communicate with one another in a multitude of ways without the need to be face-to-face in the same room This study was designed to explore, based on a small sample of case studies, the usefulness of one way that social technology is employed today, collaborative email letter writing (CELW), when used in conjunction with live therapy sessions to counsel a self-injuring population. Currently, most email counseling consists of exchanging communications without live clinical intervention (Heinlein, Welfel, Richmond, & Rack, 2003). While self-injury behavior …
