Connectivity Of Reef Fishes Between Mangroves And Coral Reefs In Broward County, Florida, Jennifer Savaro
Connectivity Of Reef Fishes Between Mangroves And Coral Reefs In Broward County, Florida, Jennifer Savaro
HCNSO Student Theses and Dissertations
Many marine fishes use the mangrove ecosystem for foraging, protection, spawning, and as a nursery habitat. To develop a better understanding of energy flow between the coastal mangrove and coral reef ecosystems, the ontogentic migration and trophic connectivity of reef fishes were examined through the use of carbon (C), nitrogen (N), and oxygen (O) stable isotope ratios. Juvenile and adult gray snapper Lutjanus griseus, lane snapper L. synagris, bluestriped grunt Haemulon sciurus, French grunt H. flavolineatum, sailor’s choice H. parra, yellowfin mojarra Gerres cinereus, and great barracuda Sphyraena barracuda were collected from both mangrove …

Staghorn Coral, Acropora Cervicornis, Restoration In South Florida: Growth And Survivorship Of Outplanted Nursery Corals, Meaghan Johnson
HCNSO Student Theses and Dissertations
This thesis provides a detailed analysis of the growth and survivorship of outplanted Acropora cervicornis corals from underwater nurseries within three regions of the Florida Reef Tract. Substantial loss of stony coral cover on Florida’s coral reefs, including the branching staghorn coral, Acropora cervicornis, has occurred for decades due to disturbances such as disease, temperature induced bleaching, hurricanes, sedimentation, and pollution. This rapid population decline contributed to A. cervicornis being listed as a threatened species under the U.S. Endangered Species Act in May 2006. To aid in the recovery of the species, coral fragments were grown in underwater nurseries …
Cross-Shelf And Latitudinal Benthic Community Investigation In The Nearshore Habitats Of The Northern Florida Reef Tract, Katelyn Klug
Cross-Shelf And Latitudinal Benthic Community Investigation In The Nearshore Habitats Of The Northern Florida Reef Tract, Katelyn Klug
HCNSO Student Theses and Dissertations
The Florida Reef Tract (FRT) extends from the tropical Caribbean northward along the Florida coast into a warm temperate environment where tropical reef communities diminish with increasing latitude. This study was designed to map the nearshore benthic habitats including coral reefs and evaluate how the benthic communities differ between habitats and along the coast.
Benthic communities across the northern FRT from Key Biscayne to Hillsboro Inlet (25.5°-26.3° N) were digitized from aerial photography taken in 2013 at a 1:1,000 scale. Three main hard-bottom habitat types were identified that ran parallel to shore and consecutively further away from shore: Colonized Pavement, …
Thermal Preferences And Critical Temperature Regimes Of The Western North Atlantic Invasive Lionfish Complex (Pterois Spp.), Benjamin Barker
Thermal Preferences And Critical Temperature Regimes Of The Western North Atlantic Invasive Lionfish Complex (Pterois Spp.), Benjamin Barker
HCNSO Student Theses and Dissertations
Temperature preference, behavioral tolerance, and physiological tolerances were determined for locally captured, invasive juvenile lionfish at four different acclimation temperatures (13°C, 20°C, 25 °C and 32°C). Temperature preferences and avoidance temperatures were evaluated using an automated shuttlebox system that presents subject-driven temperature stimuli to subjects, who control the temperature with their movement throughout the tank for 12 hours. Subjects are tracked by a computer system, with data output approximately every second. Acute preference was calculated from the archived data as the mean temperature that the fish occupied during the first two hours of dynamic experimentation. Acute preference measurements were used …

Toll-Like Receptor 9-Mediated Inflammation Triggers Alveolar Bone Loss In Experimental Murine Periodontitis, Paul D. Kim, Xia Xia-Juan, Katie E. Crump, Toshiharu Abe, George Hajishengallis, Sinem E. Sahingur
Biology Faculty Articles
Chronic periodontitis is a local inflammatory disease induced by a dysbiotic microbiota and leading to destruction of the tooth-supporting structures. Microbial nucleic acids are abundantly present in the periodontium, derived through release after phagocytic uptake of microbes and/or from biofilm-associated extracellular DNA. Binding of microbial DNA to its cognate receptors, such as Toll-like receptor 9 (TLR9), can trigger inflammation. In this study, we utilized TLR9 knockout (TLR9−/−) mice and wild-type (WT) controls in a murine model of Porphyromonas gingivalis-induced periodontitis and report the first in vivo evidence that TLR9 signaling mediates the induction of periodontal bone loss.P. gingivalis-infected …

A Novel Approach To Lymphedema Management In Upper Extremity Amputations: A Case Report, Katie Polo, Gali Gamble
A Novel Approach To Lymphedema Management In Upper Extremity Amputations: A Case Report, Katie Polo, Gali Gamble
Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice
Many breast cancer survivors experience lymphedema complications from past medical management procedures such as axillary lymph node dissections and/or radiation therapy. These complications negatively affect the patient’s health and overall quality of life. Occupational therapists (OT) certified in lymphedema management can contribute to positive patient outcomes as part of a comprehensive medical team. A case is presented of a 73-year-old female post voluntary trans-humeral amputation due to radiation induced brachial plexopathy. This patient’s treatment was led by an OT certified in lymphedema management and included complete decongestive therapy and analysis of function with a focus on the development of a …

Trying Not To Lie...And Failing: Autoethnography, Memory, Malleability, John Freeman
Trying Not To Lie...And Failing: Autoethnography, Memory, Malleability, John Freeman
The Qualitative Report
All research is experiential, whether this is the experience of reading in the library or observing in the field. Autoethnographers take experience into narratives and are themselves key participants in their research, and often also its subject. For autoethnographers the idea of research as a neutral process is abandoned in favour of a self-reflective form that explores the researcher's perspective on the subject in question. Autoethnography inevitably negotiates the relationship between the stories we want to tell and the histories we have lived through; between the necessary fictions of publication/presentation and the real world experiences we draw upon. This article …

The Ideological Dilemmas Inherent In Informal Learning Spaces: A Discourse Analysis Of Preservice Teacher Talk, Jessica Nina Lester, Lisa Scherff, Trena M. Paulus
The Qualitative Report
Informal learning spaces, such as summer reading programs, have the potential to both motivate children and provide opportunities for preservice teachers to try out new practices. However, there is little research on the talk that occurs in these informal learning spaces, particularly those intended to function as third spaces. Audio recordings of meetings between preservice teachers and high school students talking together about young adult literature in a space intended to function as a third space were analyzed to explore how discourse choices shaped the participants' practices. We found that the participants both resisted and reproduced the traditional classroom in …
The Challenge Of Involvement And Detachment In Participant Observation, Enock Takyi
The Challenge Of Involvement And Detachment In Participant Observation, Enock Takyi
The Qualitative Report
The technique of participant observation, and the roles involved, have been widely discussed in the literature across a range of settings and topics. However, researchers rarely argue for a particular role that a participant observer should adopt. In this paper, I attempt to argue for the participant-as-observer role. I do so by reviewing existing literature on the topic. I argue that the complete observer and the complete participant roles are not applicable in today's research environment because, aside from their practical problems, they violate the ethical requirement of informed consent. I argued further that the observer-as-participant role, with its limited …

Borderlands: My Path To Becoming A Sex Therapist, G. Corey Carlisle
Borderlands: My Path To Becoming A Sex Therapist, G. Corey Carlisle
The Qualitative Report
Current studies focus on the practice of therapy more than the person of the therapist, which remains true in the practice of sex therapy. This study seeks to provide insight into the person-of-the-therapist by exploring the researcher’s personal journey to becoming a sex therapist. Using an autoethnography qualitative research approach, the researcher analyzed his inner experiences. The researcher demonstrated his life in the borderlands, how Eros reconciles his double-consciousness, and how this has led him to his work as a sex therapist. This study encourages readers to reflect and give voice to their own developmental experiences, adding to the collective …

Resisting Technical Rationality In Mental Health Nurse Higher Education: A Duoethnography, Alec J. Grant, Mark A. C. Radcliffe
The Qualitative Report
This duoethnographic study has three aims: the first is to coherently situate our emerging duoethnographic dialogue in relation to an overview of both its parent methodology and related approaches within the narrative inquiry paradigm. Our second aim is to then enable readers to make contextual sense of our dialogue. We do so by prefacing it with a brief, focused overview of our theoretical, empirical and fiction work, and related literature, selected for the purpose of clarification. Following this, our final aim is to demonstrate in our dialogue the differences between our respective attempts as academics to work against the neoliberal …

Giving A Face To Immigration And Integration Processes: The Use Of Photovoice With Italian Young Adults, Nadia Rania, Laura Migliorini, Paola Cardinali, Stefania Rebora
The Qualitative Report
This study used Photovoice to investigate the perspectives of majority youth in Italy about the immigration and integration processes. The participants were 99 Italian young adults living in two northwestern regions of Italy. Images produced by young adults and subsequent discussion focused on the benefits, challenges and possible solutions to foster intergroup integration. The proposed solutions involved intergroup contact, deepening knowledge of other cultures, and recognition of immigrants’ rights. These solutions demonstrate young adults’ openness toward immigrants and their attitude regarding intercultural integration.

Modeling Of Humoral Immune Response To Repeated Influenza A Virus Infections, Abbiana Arenas, Safiyah Muhammad, Ly Nguyen, Samita Andreansky, Evan Haskell
Mathematics Faculty Proceedings, Presentations, Speeches, Lectures
Seasonal infections by Influenza A virus (IAV) causes hundreds of thousands of deaths worldwide each year, with most individuals being infected multiple times throughout their lifetimes. The relative impact of the components of the host immune system in controlling the severity and duration of repeated challenges from an IAV infection remains unclear. In particular, the differential contribution of the humoral immune response in primary and secondary challenges from IAV are relatively little explored. We develop a parsimonious mathematical model of the humoral immune response to IAV infection with biologically meaningful and identifiable parameters. We show the relative sensitivity of the …

An International Assessment Of Mangrove Management: Incorporation In Integrated Coastal Zone Management, Haille N. Carter, Steffen W. Schmidt, Amy Hirons
Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles
Due to increasing recognition of the benefits provided by mangrove ecosystems, protection policies have emerged under both wetland and forestry programs. However, little consistency remains among these programs and inadequate coordination exists among sectors of government. With approximately 123 countries containing mangroves, the need for global management of these ecosystems is crucial to sustain the industries (i.e., fisheries, timber, and tourism) and coastal communities that mangroves support and protect. To determine the most effective form of mangrove management, this review examines management guidelines, particularly those associated with Integrated Coastal Zone Management (ICZM). Five case studies were reviewed to further explore …

Modeling The Geographic Spread Of Rabies In China, Jing Chen, Lan Zou, Shigui Ruan
Mathematics Faculty Articles
Abstract
In order to investigate how the movement of dogs affects the geographically inter-provincial spread of rabies in Mainland China, we propose a multi-patch model to describe the transmission dynamics of rabies between dogs and humans, in which each province is regarded as a patch. In each patch the submodel consists of susceptible, exposed, infectious, and vaccinated subpopulations of both dogs and humans and describes the spread of rabies among dogs and from infectious dogs to humans. The existence of the disease-free equilibrium is discussed, the basic reproduction number is calculated, and the effect of moving rates of dogs between …
Spirituality And The Sense Of Self: An Inductive Analysis, Louis F. Kavar
Spirituality And The Sense Of Self: An Inductive Analysis, Louis F. Kavar
The Qualitative Report
The investigation examined the understanding of spirituality as related to the sense of self. Self-reports from semi-structured interviews of participants with a stated value for spirituality are analyzed inductively. Using a Rogerian understanding of self, the analysis identified six themes related to how participants understand spirituality as related to their sense of self. The themes demonstrate that spirituality is a key dimension to self understanding and is part of relationships, social engagement, an understanding of meaning and purpose in life, and an overall sense of happiness and joy.
