Anita’S Plight: Challenging Low Expectations For A Black Girl In A Montreal High School, Lerona Dana Lewis Dr.
Anita’S Plight: Challenging Low Expectations For A Black Girl In A Montreal High School, Lerona Dana Lewis Dr.
The Qualitative Report
In this paper, I examine how a Black adolescent girl in a Montreal high school contests low teacher expectations that resulted in her being directed to a vocational program (Formation à un métier semi-spécialisé, FMS) in her high school. The FMS program prepares children for entry-level careers, defined in the Quebec curriculum as semi-skilled jobs. I (re)present her account in the form of a narrative found poem that explores how the use of found poetry as a heuristic device improves understanding of the school practices impacting the student’s placement in the FMS program. The found poem offers a critical reading …
Ziyyarah: Ethical And Intra-Active Space For Conducting Interviews With Muslim American Students, Wesam M. Salem
Ziyyarah: Ethical And Intra-Active Space For Conducting Interviews With Muslim American Students, Wesam M. Salem
The Qualitative Report
Conducting research with Muslim American participants, who have non-Western roots and are bound to their cultural, linguistic, and religious practices, the prescribed, Eurocentric, and power-laden interviewing practices appear to be unfit and essentializing. This paper extends the argument to de/colonize research practices to create realities that are inclusive of participants' ways of knowing and culture. It also draws from the call for an intra-active and entangled approach to research that emphasizes how researchers and their subjects mutually co-constitute knowledge through their entanglement in the research process. It is also rooted in postcolonial theory, and the concept of the nomadic subject …
Talking About Politics On Social Media?: Opinions Of Emerging Adults, Barbara Ruth Burke
Talking About Politics On Social Media?: Opinions Of Emerging Adults, Barbara Ruth Burke
The Qualitative Report
News stories say the Internet is filled with increasingly polarizing, politically strident speech. Looking beyond the headlines, this study investigates experiences of non-activist, emerging adults at a small college, to see in what ways their everyday social media communications reflect these conflict-oriented, argumentative extremes, and/or if they have internalized a version of the “spiral of silence.” Regarding active media engagement, this project describes how social media is used by a selected group of emerging adults and investigates the reasons these people give when explaining the risks they perceive are related to political communication on social media. Fifteen structured interviews from …

A Qualitative Study On The Barriers And Facilitators Of Integrating Women Into The Firefighting Workforce: Perspectives Of Men And Women, Helen Frazer Ph.D. Candidate, Ellie Lawrence-Wood Ph.D., Miranda Van Hooff Ph.D., Amelia Searle Ph.D.
The Qualitative Report
This study explores the barriers and facilitators of integrating women into the firefighting workforce, with insights drawn from both women and men firefighters in South Australia. The research focuses on challenges and supports encountered during recruitment and long-term retention of women in this male-dominated field. Data were gathered through semi-structured interviews with paid (career) firefighters, with a thematic analysis applied to transcriptions. Key themes identified included occupational challenges (barriers) such as lack of diversity, perception of women as “diversity hires,” ill-fitting uniforms and equipment, unconscious bias, and the hypermasculine culture of the workplace. Women also tended to cope with workplace …

The Qualitative Report
Given the increasing emergence of artificial intelligence (AI) in education, high school students' perspectives on ChatGPT are underrepresented in current research literature. As high school student researchers in an English Language Arts course, we approached this gap in literature by asking the question: In what ways do pressures within high school communities influence students’ perspectives on justifying or rejecting the use of ChatGPT? We interviewed 24 secondary students and conducted a thematic and discourse analysis, coding the interviews through the lenses of social goods (Gee, 2014), Figured Worlds (Holland et al., 1998), and positioning theory (Holland et al., 1998; Ingram …

Navigating Crisis: A Qualitative Exploration Of Parents' Journeys With Suicidal Adolescents In Australian Emergency Departments, Demee Rheinberger, Lauren Mcgillivray, Fiona Shand, Sally Ann Pollard, Susanne Oliver Armstrong, Julia Lessing, Katherine Boydell
The Qualitative Report
Rates of emergency department (ED) presentations for suicide crisis (thoughts, feelings, plans and behaviours) in adolescents are increasing. Parents play a key role in supporting adolescents during and after the ED presentation, however little is known about parental experiences in the ED. Interviews with 20 parents from across Australia were undertaken to help understand this experience. A reflexive thematic analysis was conducted, resulting in three themes which explore the impact of the suicide crisis and ED presentation on the parents’ sense of identity. First, parents’ identity was threatened as they were faced with the juxtaposition between the role of protector …

Teachers' Knowledge And Understanding Of Physical Literacy In Physical Education Learning: A Phenomenological Approach, Johan Irmansyah, Maulidin Maulidin, Herman Syah, Edi Kurniawan
The Qualitative Report
This study explores the knowledge and understanding of elementary school physical education (PE) teachers regarding the concept of physical literacy (PL) through a phenomenological approach. PL encompasses fundamental movement skills, as well as the knowledge, motivation, and confidence necessary for lifelong participation in physical activities. Ten PE teachers with over 10 years of teaching experience were selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected via in-depth interviews, observations, and documentation, and analyzed using inductive content analysis with the aid of ATLAS.ti software. The findings reveal that many teachers hold misconceptions about PL, often prioritizing the mastery of physical abilities while overlooking …
The Ethics Of Exploitation: How Social Media Profits From Attention, Addiction, And Data Manipulation, Laeila Scott
The Ethics Of Exploitation: How Social Media Profits From Attention, Addiction, And Data Manipulation, Laeila Scott
NSU Undergraduate Law Journal
The pervasive influence of social media platforms extends far beyond digital interaction, shaping human behavior, manipulating democratic processes, and exploiting user data with minimal oversight. Through the attention economy, these platforms employ algorithms designed to maximize engagement at the expense of users’ autonomy, fostering addiction and cognitive dependency. Manipulative terms and conditions further entrench corporate control, binding users to contracts with the very companies that obscure the extent of data collection and limit legal recourse. The Cambridge Analytica scandal laid bare the dangers of unregulated data harvesting, demonstrating how personal information can be weaponized for political and economic gain.

Discussing The Unconstitutionality Of The Dual Sovereign Doctrine, Kaden Collorafi
Discussing The Unconstitutionality Of The Dual Sovereign Doctrine, Kaden Collorafi
NSU Undergraduate Law Journal
This paper critically examines the United States Supreme Court’s long-standing endorsement of the Dual Sovereignty Doctrine, which permits successive prosecutions by both state and federal governments for the same underlying conduct. Rooted in dicta from Moore v. Illinois and formally adopted in United States v. Lanza, the doctrine, in the author’s opinion, has repeatedly undermined the Double Jeopardy Clause of the Fifth Amendment. Despite the incorporation of this clause to the states through the Fourteenth Amendment in Benton v. Maryland, the Court has maintained the doctrine on grounds of judicial practicality and sovereign independence.
Through an in-depth review …
Personalized Nutrition Program For Microbiome Restoration: A Functional Approach To Gut Health, Digestive Function, And Weight Management, Maria Camila Trujillo
Personalized Nutrition Program For Microbiome Restoration: A Functional Approach To Gut Health, Digestive Function, And Weight Management, Maria Camila Trujillo
Department of Nutrition Student Projects
The gut microbiome has emerged as a fundamental influencer of digestion, metabolism, human health, and weight management. Dysbiosis and imbalance in gut microbial composition are associated with various health disorders, including obesity, metabolic dysfunction, and gastrointestinal disturbances. Considering the high incidence of weight-related health concerns among dietary clients, personalized microbiome interventions offer a promising therapeutic approach. This project aimed to develop evidence-based medical nutrition therapy guidelines grounded in individualized microbiome analysis via stool testing. As a structured protocol, the RISE method (reset, identify, support, excel) was established based on the current literature review and specialized microbiome training. The methodology incorporates …
Transnational Methodological Engagements With Artistic Narratives: Challenging Hierarchies And Building Community, Lauren Stetz
Transnational Methodological Engagements With Artistic Narratives: Challenging Hierarchies And Building Community, Lauren Stetz
The Qualitative Report
Through the analysis Violence Against Women Art Map Project, a publicly accessible online platform that utilizes data visualization to understand the contextual complexities of violence against women (VAW), this article explores how comics and narrative artworks can be utilized to provide voice on sensitive or controversial subject matter, challenge accepted societal hierarchies and norms and build community. Considering social media as a transnational dialogic space, graphic works within online spaces can provide qualitative researchers with the potential to expose the multilayered and entangled experiences of individuals across cultures and to interrupt frequently silenced issues that often go unwitnessed and unspoken. …
Biomarkers That Could Explain Parasite-Induced Behavioral Alterations In The Golden Shiner (Notemigonus Crysoleucas) – Posthodiplostomum System, Laura D. Nicolas
Biomarkers That Could Explain Parasite-Induced Behavioral Alterations In The Golden Shiner (Notemigonus Crysoleucas) – Posthodiplostomum System, Laura D. Nicolas
All HCAS Student Capstones, Theses, and Dissertations
Trophically transmitted parasites require an intermediate host to be consumed and often manipulate host phenotype (i.e., morphology, physiology, and/or behavior) to increase predation risk by definitive hosts. Posthodiplostomum is a trematode with a complex life cycle involving snails as first hosts, fish as second intermediate hosts, and piscivorous birds as definitive hosts. In fish hosts, Posthodiplostomum infection has been linked to increased predation, suggesting suppression of antipredator behaviors. However, the specific physiological pathways remained unexplored and changes in the host’s neural, endocrine, and immune systems could be involved. Thus, I examined whether Posthodiplostomum infection intensity was associated with brain serotonin …
Microbial Community And Water Quality Assessment Of Crassostrea Virginica Habitats In Southeast Florida, Stacy Brown
Microbial Community And Water Quality Assessment Of Crassostrea Virginica Habitats In Southeast Florida, Stacy Brown
All HCAS Student Capstones, Theses, and Dissertations
Eastern oysters (Crassostrea virginica) are essential habitat-forming species that contribute significantly to coastal water quality due to their filter-feeding behavior. Unlike other coastal regions in the Gulf of Mexico and Northeastern United States, oysters are not commercially managed in Southeast Florida and as a result sparse data exists on locations of the Eastern oyster habitat. Similarly, the benefits of oyster reefs to water quality are also not fully documented in Southeast Florida. Although beneficial and often referred to as keystone habitat building species, populations of C. virginica are not currently listed as protected species so little work has …

The Qualitative Report
Anyone who was trained in Italy in the last decades of the 20th century will recall how central the debate around "quali(tative)" and "quanti(tative)" was at that time, when quantitative methods seemed to offer reassurance regarding the scientific credentials of a discipline still young and insecure in terms of its identity. The supremacy of the quantitative even though it is already from the 1970s that we witness a slow, and often contested, "revival of qualitative research linked to profound epistemological changes [...], to the crisis of the objectivist paradigm [...] and the recognition of the centrality of language [...] (Frisina, …
Factors That Contribute To An Increased Risk For Dental Caries And Prevention Methods, Allen Lee
Factors That Contribute To An Increased Risk For Dental Caries And Prevention Methods, Allen Lee
BIO4960: Practicum in Biology I
This health literacy project focuses on identifying effective strategies for preventing dental caries by analyzing various aspects of an individual’s daily habits. Key lifestyle factors such as sleep patterns, dietary choices, and physical activity were explored in relation to their impact on oral health. The motivation for this project arose from direct observations of the high prevalence of cavities during clinical shadowing experiences, as well as growing evidence in the literature, highlighting an increasing trend in dental caries. Dental caries represent significant public health concern, as untreated caries can lead to serious complications such as tooth abscesses and extractions. Despite …
Psychological Assessment Is Here To Stay, Irving B. Weiner
Psychological Assessment Is Here To Stay, Irving B. Weiner
Archives of Assessment Psychology
Psychological assessment is based on the psychology of individual differences and dates back to the beginnings of scientific psychology. Clinical psychology began as a profession that provided psychological assessment, and through the 1950s assessment was what most clinical psychologists did most of the time. The value and propriety of psychological assessment was subsequently challenged on various grounds, and other activities gradually supplanted diagnostic testing as a preferred career role among clinical psychologists. Despite predictions of its demise, assessment has continued to be the second most frequent professional activity of clinical psychologists, after psychotherapy. Instead of fading away, psychological assessment has …

Standard scoring methods for the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale, Fourth Edition (WAIS-IV) require that all core subtests be used to compute index scores, yet it is possible to prorate certain indices using a reduced number of subtests. The purpose of this study is to explore differences in WAIS-IV Verbal Comprehension, Perceptual Reasoning, and Full Scale IQ Index scores as a result of using standard versus prorated scoring methods. Participants were 149 adults, ages 18 to 84 who were previously administered the WAIS-IV. Protocols were scored using standard scoring methods and then re-scored using each alternate proration combination for Verbal Comprehension, …

Objective: To explore the psychometric properties of MMPI-adapted versions of the MMPI-2-RF’s RC and factor scales when applied to archival adolescent MMPI data. Method: We explored the internal consistency, temporal stability, and convergent and criterion validity of newly derived MMPI-adapted RC scales and MMPI-adapted higher-order factors (MMPI-ARC and MMPI-AF) using data from the first normative adolescent MMPI samples: 3,971 ninth graders assessed in Minneapolis public schools in 1947-1948 and 11,329 ninth graders assessed statewide in 1954. Results: Most MMPI-ARC and MMPI-AF scales showed good internal reliability, which did not vary uniformly with the proportion of available items. The MMPI-ARC scales …
