Optimizing Restoration Site Selection Along The Florida Reef Tract For The Coral Species Acropora Cervicornis And Acropora Palmata, Samantha King Apr 2019

Optimizing Restoration Site Selection Along The Florida Reef Tract For The Coral Species Acropora Cervicornis And Acropora Palmata, Samantha King

HCNSO Student Theses and Dissertations

The decline of Acropora cervicornis and Acropora palmata populations and consequent listing as endangered species has prompted the need for restoration. Since financial resources are limited, optimal sites for restoration should not only be environmentally suitable for outplant survival, but also have a greater capacity to replenish surrounding reefs with larvae. However, in Florida coral larval dispersal patterns and reef connectivity remain poorly studied. Here, we measured long term larval survival and competency of A. cervicornis to calibrate a high resolution (100m) biophysical larval dispersal model of Acropora in the Florida Reef Tract (FRT). This model revealed that there is …

Most academics are trained to do rigorous research in their field, and view teaching responsibilities as disconnected from their research agenda. This session will merge these activities and provide participants with a primer on the scholarship of teaching and learning (SOTL). This PDW will help those interested in developing what they do in the classroom into teaching and learning academic conference presentations, publishable classroom activities, peerreviewed journal publications, and other intellectual contributions.

Advocating For The Use Of Poetry And Mixed Media Work In Analytic Processes, Jason D. Dehart Apr 2019

Advocating For The Use Of Poetry And Mixed Media Work In Analytic Processes, Jason D. Dehart

The Qualitative Report

As part of my analytical process of looking at data collected from a pilot study on the use of film in the classroom, I discovered that I had the space to engage in a creative analysis process. In this article, I propose that creative methods be employed when analyzing data. An arts-based approach to research (Barone & Eisner, 1997) led to two creative products for my research: Poetry, which has been used with research in the past (Cahnmann, 2003; McCullis, 2013) and mixed media. This article explores relevant literature about integrating poetry and other arts into analysis and serves to …

So You Want To Do Post-Intentional Phenomenological Research?, Katherine E. Soule, Melissa Freeman Apr 2019

So You Want To Do Post-Intentional Phenomenological Research?, Katherine E. Soule, Melissa Freeman

The Qualitative Report

In this article, phenomenology, both in its philosophical and methodological variants, is introduced in the form of a fictional dialogue between a student justifying her interest in using a post-intentional phenomenological approach in her dissertation to her major professor. The dialogue tackles founding philosophers, notably Husserl, Heidegger, and Merleau-Ponty; contemporary researchers, including A. Giorgi, B. Giorgi, van Manen, and Vagle; several phenomenological concepts, such as intentionality, bracketing, and bridling; and provides examples of three distinct approaches to phenomenological research.

Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles

With compelling evidence that half the world’s coral reefs have been lost over the last four decades, there is urgent motivation to understand where reefs are located and their health. Without such basic baseline information, it is challenging to mount a response to the reef crisis on the global scale at which it is occurring. To combat this lack of baseline data, the Khaled bin Sultan Living Oceans Foundation embarked on a 10-yr survey of a broad selection of Earth’s remotest reef sites—the Global Reef Expedition. This paper focuses on one output of this expedition, which is meter-resolution seafloor habitat …

How Do We Like To Learn Qualitative Data Analysis Software?, Fábio Freitas, Jaime Ribeiro, Catarina Brandão, Carla Azevedo De Almeida, Francislê Neri De Souza, António Pedro Costa

The Qualitative Report

The learning of Computer Assisted Qualitative Data Analysis Software (CAQDAS) can represent a great challenge and obstacle to the adoption of these tools in support of research. Thus, it seems imperative that CAQDAS developers devise strategies and tools that stimulate and support researchers in the learning process of their applications. To this end, this study focuses on the learning preferences of CAQDAS users. A focus group was conducted with experienced CAQDAS users and an online questionnaire was administered to 232 users from 29 different countries and representing a diversity of 26 CAQDAS. The obtained data allow to infer that the …

Stories Matter: Reaffirming The Value Of Qualitative Research, Samantha Mcaleese, Jennifer M. Kilty Apr 2019

Stories Matter: Reaffirming The Value Of Qualitative Research, Samantha Mcaleese, Jennifer M. Kilty

The Qualitative Report

While the social sciences are experiencing narrative and emotional turns that are largely based on exploratory and theoretical qualitative research, the problematic dismissal of qualitative research approaches continues to loom large outside academia. Frequently described as a collection of “anecdotal stories,” qualitative research is dismissed as unscientific and unreliable— comments that limit the perceived usefulness of qualitative findings, especially in terms of policy reform. This article problematizes evaluating qualitative research according to quantitative measures of rigour and explores the richness and value of documenting experiential stories and the process of storying in social science research. Notably, we take up the …

Avatar Kinect: Drama In The Virtual Classroom Among L2 Learners Of English, Robert Bianchi, Byrad Yyelland, Joseph John Yang, Molly Mcharg

The Qualitative Report

This study presents a qualitative approach to exploring classroom behaviour using dramaturgical analysis of student interactions in relation with, and as mediated through, a gesture-based gaming software among L2 learners of English at two international branch campuses in the Arabian Gulf where face-to-face interactions between unrelated members of the opposite sex are generally discouraged. We investigated whether Avatar Kinect might provide a safe way for young males and females to interact while discussing social issues in a composition course. Data were collected through personal observation and survey. Five key themes emerged from the study. First, some participants chose to perform …

A Call For Enhancing Saturation At The Qualitative Data Analysis Stage Via The Use Of Multiple Qualitative Data Analysis Approaches, Amber N. Sechelski, Anthony J. Onwuegbuzie Apr 2019

A Call For Enhancing Saturation At The Qualitative Data Analysis Stage Via The Use Of Multiple Qualitative Data Analysis Approaches, Amber N. Sechelski, Anthony J. Onwuegbuzie

The Qualitative Report

The analysis of data represents the most important and difficult step in the qualitative research process. Thus, recently, a few authors have written methodological works that contain discussion of an array of qualitative data analysis approaches. Yet, despite the call of Leech and Onwuegbuzie (2007) a decade ago for qualitative researchers to analyze a given set of qualitative data in multiple ways, this practice has been largely ignored. Thus, in this article, we bolster the argument for conducting multiple data analyses. In particular, we use data stemming from an interview to demonstrate how using five qualitative data analysis approaches (e.g., …

Developing Interactive Elicitation: Social Desirability Bias And Capturing Play, Matthew Spokes, Jack Denham Apr 2019

Developing Interactive Elicitation: Social Desirability Bias And Capturing Play, Matthew Spokes, Jack Denham

The Qualitative Report

Drawing on research from a mixed-methods project on gaming we argue for a qualitative methodological approach called “interactive elicitation,” a form of data collection that combines elements of photo elicitation, interviewing and vignettes. After situating our broader research project exploring young people’s experiences of violent open-world video games, we outline the process of conducting interactive elicitation, arguing for a mixed-methods approach where participants are observed and interviewed both during and immediately after interacting with particular cultural artefacts, in this case the game GTA V. We reflect on the initial design of the research methodology, the problematic aspects of conducting the …

“Through The Looking Glass”: The Emotional Journey Of The Volunteer Ethnographer When Researching Sensitive Topics With Vulnerable Populations, Fábio Rafael Augusto, Ana Patrícia Hilário

The Qualitative Report

This paper extends further research on being both a volunteer and ethnographic researcher and intends to offer some insights on the emotional challenges of adopting this dual role when conducting research on sensitive topics and with vulnerable populations. The discussion presented here draws upon an ethnographic participant observation study of a food redistribution organization (Re-food) held in Lisbon, the capital of Portugal. The paper builds awareness on the emotional challenges in the field and discusses potential self-reflective strategies for researchers to cope with the extraordinary demands posed on them by specific circumstances and subjects. The volunteer ethnographer, when developing their …

Using Web Forums For Qualitative Inquiries: Empirical Findings On The Conditions And Techniques For Asynchronous Online Group Discussions, Daniela Schiek, Carsten G. Ullrich Apr 2019

Using Web Forums For Qualitative Inquiries: Empirical Findings On The Conditions And Techniques For Asynchronous Online Group Discussions, Daniela Schiek, Carsten G. Ullrich

The Qualitative Report

This paper presents findings from an experimental empirical study about web forum discussions as instruments for qualitative research inquiries. It focuses on written, asynchronous group discussions between absent communication partners and deals with autonomous group discussions instead of strongly structured focus groups. The autonomous development of subtopics by the group using written communication between absent partners is a particular challenge for both the researcher and the debaters. Under which conditions and using which techniques do qualitative group discussions using a web forum work successfully? Three aspects of running such discussions can be clarified: a surprisingly modest group size, a duration …

“Listen To Your Gut”: A Reflexive Approach To Data Analysis, Nicole Brown Apr 2019

“Listen To Your Gut”: A Reflexive Approach To Data Analysis, Nicole Brown

The Qualitative Report

Over the last two decades qualitative research has seen significant shifts towards the narrative, reflexive and creative. And yet, analytical frameworks do not seem to have stayed abreast of these developments. Using research into the construction of identity under the influence of fibromyalgia as an example, this paper seeks to exemplify a reflexive approach to data analysis that accounts for the researcher’s positionality as well as the increasingly untraditional, unconventional data stemming from creative data collection methods. The paper provides insight into data analysis and reflexivity and offers two practical examples of reflexive data analysis—an illustrated poem and an installation. …

Evaluation Of The Socio Emotional Learning (Sel) Activities On Self-Regulation Skills Among Primary School Children, Kerem Coskun Apr 2019

Evaluation Of The Socio Emotional Learning (Sel) Activities On Self-Regulation Skills Among Primary School Children, Kerem Coskun

The Qualitative Report

I seek the experience of the primary school children who participated in the SEL Activities instructing self-regulation skill. I designed the SEL Activities and conducted them with the participant students’ classroom teacher. I used phenomenological methods (Moustakas, 1994) to collect data through semi-structured interviews with primary school children who are 10-years-old and analysed the data by identifying significant statements and then clustering the significant statements into themes, writing textural and structural descriptions, before finally arriving at a composite description. Findings demonstrate that through the SEL Activities, the participant children became more competent in realizing the influence of emotions on their …

Interviewing Criminal Justice Populations Without Electronic Recording Devices: A Guide, Phaik Kin Cheah, N. Prabha Unnithan, Annie Margaret Sandela Raran Apr 2019

Interviewing Criminal Justice Populations Without Electronic Recording Devices: A Guide, Phaik Kin Cheah, N. Prabha Unnithan, Annie Margaret Sandela Raran

The Qualitative Report

We outline a guide for facilitating face-to-face in-depth interviews without the use of electronic recording devices in criminal justice research. It is designed to provide researchers with step-by-step directions they can follow to conduct interviews when recording equipment is not available, not allowed, or not used due to other reasons. In-depth interviews are common in qualitative criminal justice research but require researchers to be highly flexible and adaptive. When interviews are conducted on sensitive issues or carried out in high security environments, recording devices may not be permitted or welcomed. This protocol aims to make the interviews more structured, systematic …

Vulnerable Vets? How Gatekeeping And Stereotypes Shape Access To Student-Veterans In The Qualitative Interview Process, Erica Morales, Anjana Narayan, William Atienza Apr 2019

Vulnerable Vets? How Gatekeeping And Stereotypes Shape Access To Student-Veterans In The Qualitative Interview Process, Erica Morales, Anjana Narayan, William Atienza

The Qualitative Report

Based on in-depth interviews we conducted with more than 30 student-veterans enrolled in higher education institutions, in this paper we examine the methodological challenges of collecting qualitative interview data from this population. Situated within the larger interdisciplinary literature of doing qualitative research with vulnerable groups, we explore the implications of student-veterans being labeled as vulnerable by ethics review boards and institutional agents such as veteran’s organizations. Based on our research experience, we argue that framing student-veterans as vulnerable can lead to further stereotyping of this group and to difficulties in accessing an already under-researched population. In addition, our inability to …

A Fat Mass And Obesity-Associated Gene Polymorphism Influences Fat Mass In Exercise-Trained Individuals, Sarah Knafo, Alina Ali Apr 2019

A Fat Mass And Obesity-Associated Gene Polymorphism Influences Fat Mass In Exercise-Trained Individuals, Sarah Knafo, Alina Ali

Undergraduate Student Symposium

A single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) in the fat mass and obesity-associated (FTO) gene is a strong predictor of obesity in humans. The FTO SNP (rs1421085) results in a T to C nucleotide substitution that may result in an increased risk for obesity in individuals who carry at least one C allele. The purpose of this investigation was to characterize the FTO genotype in a cohort of exercise-trained men and women. We tested 108 exercise-trained individuals that included professional mixed martial arts fighters, competitive distance runners, collegiate swimmers, stand-up paddlers as well as a cohort of recreational bodybuilders. Body composition was …

Am I #Metoo?, Maha Barakat

Undergraduate Student Symposium

In this documentary film, “Am I #MeToo?,” women of three different cultures, religions, and ethnicities will be interviewed regarding their view of the Me Too Movement. I will focus on whether they feel included and/or represented when it comes to modern social movements. The film will also question whether certain communities get left out because of the stereotypes surrounding their identities. The goal of this project is to shed light on which people are actually receiving the help they seek in these social movements. I want to provide an understanding of what empowerment is being sought through these ideologies, and …

Bilingualism And Inhibitory Control: The Advantage Of Speaking A Second Language, Maria Morales Apr 2019

Bilingualism And Inhibitory Control: The Advantage Of Speaking A Second Language, Maria Morales

Undergraduate Student Symposium

Researchers speculate that speaking a second language has benefits that go beyond communicative abilities. Bilingualism has been linked to enhanced performance on executive function (EF) tasks, particularly, those that require inhibitory control. Inhibition is the ability to ignore salient, but distracting, information which may occupy and divert attention from the task at hand. To date, however, the findings have been inconsistent, and one major limitation in the literature is that most studies do not objectively quantify second language proficiency. This study, therefore, used an objective measure of language proficiency and compared bilinguals and monolinguals on tasks that require different levels …

Bittersweet Dreams (Are Made Of This): Unripe Fruit And Women, Vivian Dang Apr 2019

Bittersweet Dreams (Are Made Of This): Unripe Fruit And Women, Vivian Dang

Undergraduate Student Symposium

This paper investigates the role of woman as a medicinal mother in Christina Rossetti’s 1862 Christian epic poem “Goblin Market” in which two young sisters, Laura and Lizzie, struggle with temptation as wicked goblin men attempt to coerce them into consuming their forbidden fruit. The marriage market, called the “Goblin Market” in this poem, highlights the inequities between marriage expectations for men and women and the disadvantages faced by the archetypal medicinal mother in the early development of modern medicine. While men are the producers in this misogynistic marriage market, women are not the true consumers because they are the …

Comparative Investigation Of Coupling Methods To Create 2,2'-Bipyridine Adducts, Sabrina Vazquez, Kylie Wilkinson Apr 2019

Comparative Investigation Of Coupling Methods To Create 2,2'-Bipyridine Adducts, Sabrina Vazquez, Kylie Wilkinson

Undergraduate Student Symposium

The project aims to streamline the synthesis of 2,2’-bipyridine adducts, so they can be efficiently synthesized as precursors for ligands in novel organometallic ruthenium complexes. Specifically, the compounds being synthesized are 4,4’-methylated, 4-methylated, 5,5’-methylated, and 5-methylated, 2,2’-bipyridines. Three different synthetic methods will be explored including homo-coupling and crosscoupling reactions as well as the use of a turbo-Grignard reagent. The homo-coupling reaction with or without the turbo-Grignard reagent uses 2-bromo-4-methyl or 2-bromo-5-methyl pyridine as the starting material to produce the 4,4’-methylated adduct or 5,5’-methylated adduct respectively. This is in contrast to the cross-coupling reaction which utilizes a combination of the 2-bromo-4-methyl …

The CREST (Connecting Researchers, Educators, and STudents) team at Nova Southeastern University created two physical models depicting the mechanism of endonuclease cleavage by the HigB protein, as described in the literature. Details of the HigB-ribosome complex and its residues for mRNA cleavage were found in the Protein Data Bank file, 4ZSN, and imported into Jmol, a protein visualization software. Specific program commands were developed to manipulate the original file into a format that was later 3D-printed. The models highlight the small ribosomal subunit, ribosomal proteins, tRNA, rRNA, the mRNA strand, and HigB protein along with its residues involved in mRNA …

Disentangling The Effects Of Ptsd From Gwi Via A Network Analysis Of Cell-Cytokine-Symptom Interactions For Improved Diagnostics And Treatments, Jacob Hardy, Ricardo Castellanos Apr 2019

Disentangling The Effects Of Ptsd From Gwi Via A Network Analysis Of Cell-Cytokine-Symptom Interactions For Improved Diagnostics And Treatments, Jacob Hardy, Ricardo Castellanos

Undergraduate Student Symposium

A third of the veterans returning from Operation Desert Storm/Shield in the 1990-91 Gulf War reported cognitive dysfunction, skin rashes, musculoskeletal discomfort, and fatigue. This led to the designation of the unique stress-mediated condition Gulf War Illness (GWI). GWI is similar to other known stressmediated illnesses such as Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome in clinical presentation, but as yet we know no concrete understanding of the underlying mechanisms mediating the disease. As such, there are no biological diagnostic to predict the presentation of GWI. Confounding this is the high prevalence of co-morbidity with another war related condition, namely post-traumatic stress disorder …

Effect Of Standardizing Kick Plate Position On Track Start Biomechanics In Elite Swimmers, Angela Cicenia, Caroline Oster

Undergraduate Student Symposium

In the swimming track start the kick plate position on the starting block is chosen by the level of comfort of the swimmer but may influence performance. Hundredths of a second often determine the winner of short distance races. Therefore, it is crucial for a swimmer to produce a biomechanically sound start. The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of standardizing kick plate positioning based on shin length on selected biomechanics. 15 swimmers (males, 10; females, 5; age, 21.3 ± 1.7 yrs; height, 1.79 ± 0.08 m; mass, 77.4 ± 10.4 kg) participated in the study. Shin …
