School-To-Work Transitions For Deaf And Hard-Of-Hearing Students In America, Bobbie Gale Bonds

JADARA

Transition from school into the world of work can be difficult. Literacy, communication, and technology skills must be well-developed to enter and remain on the job. Strong school preparation opportunities can help ease the transition. In 1994, as part of the national movement for educational reform. Congress passed the School-to-Work Opportunities Act (STWOA), which recognized the importance of including every student from kindergarten through grade 12, with special focus on the needs of women, minorities, and disabled individuals. The Act, linked with the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), requires that educational programs develop school to work (STW) transition plans …

Effects Of Social-Cognitive Intervention For Aggressive Deaf Children: The Coping Power Program, John E. Lochmann, David P. Fitzgerald, Stephen M. Gage, Kassie M. Kanaly, Janet M. Whidby, Tammy D. Barry, Dustin H. Pardini, Heather Mcelory

JADARA

A substantial knowledge base exists regarding the social-cognitive and behavioral correlates of aggression among hearing children; however, less is known regarding these relationships among deaf children. Among aggressive hearing children, social-cognitive deficits result in poor social problem solving and increased aggressive behavior. Among aggressive deaf children, both poor social problem solving and communication difficulties are thought to lead to aggressive behavior. The Coping Power Program has demonstrated effectiveness as an intervention for aggressive hearing children. This year-long multicomponent program was adapted for use with deaf children and included both child groups and teacher and dormitory staff consultation. Study participants were …

A Comparison Of The Rehabilitation Outcomes Of Persons Who Are Deaf And Hard-Of-Hearing And Persons With Other Disabilities, Corey L. Moore

JADARA

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the rates of closure success (i.e., status 26) and level of income (i.e., weekly earnings at closure) for consumers with hearing loss (i.e., deaf and hard-of-hearing) and consumers with other disabilities. A random sample of case records (N=34,911) obtained from the RSA 911 database for fiscal year 1997 was evaluated. A series of logistic and multiple linear regression analysis, chi-square analysis, and t-tests were utilized to investigate potential relationships. Results indicated that consumers with hearing loss achieved closure success more often, and possessed higher levels of income when compared to consumers with …

Work Attitudes Of Students Who Are Deaf And Their Potential Employers, Virginia G. Lott, Susan R. Easterbrooks, Kathryn Wolff Heller, Colleen M. O’Rourke

JADARA

This study examined the attitudes held by high school students who are deaf and their potential employers regarding employees who are deaf. The subjects of this study were 30 employers from a large metropolitan area in the southeast and 30 high school students who are deaf. Subjects responded to a Likert scale that focused on how each group perceived the others' opinions of work-related issues and attitudes. Results indicated three individual areas of significance (i.e., writing, intelligence, and inability to use a telephone) and one significant aggregate group (i.e., communication). The authors discuss these results from the perspective of providing …

An Overview Of The Legal Rights Of Culturally Deaf Criminal Suspects, Katrina R. Miller, Mccay Vernon Oct 2019

An Overview Of The Legal Rights Of Culturally Deaf Criminal Suspects, Katrina R. Miller, Mccay Vernon

JADARA

The majority of culturally deaf individuals who become suspects in a criminal investigation are persons who have limited understanding of legal terminology and procedures. Despite legal safeguards such as the Miranda Warnings and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), Mirandizing these individuals continues to present unique challenges to law enforcement due to the diverse educational and communication abilities of the deaf population. This discussion will focus on legally established civil rights of signing deaf suspects in relation to the administration of the Miranda Warnings and other legal proceedings.

Antibiotics Overuse And Bacterial Resistance, Mir Saleem, Brett Deters, Adam De La Bastide, Martha Korzen Oct 2019

Antibiotics Overuse And Bacterial Resistance, Mir Saleem, Brett Deters, Adam De La Bastide, Martha Korzen

Biology Faculty Articles

Antibiotic usage has become very widespread, as they are used to treat so many infectious diseases today. Antimicrobial agents exert their actions via different mechanisms including blockage of cell wall synthesis, interference of protein and/or nucleic acid synthesis, interruption of cell membrane structure, and inhibition of a metabolic pathway. The treatment of bacterial infections with antimicrobial agents has become more difficult due to the capability of bacteria to develop resistance to antibiotics. Erroneous diagnosing, misconceptions, and improper physician-patient dynamics have led to overuse of antibiotics and the emergence of drug-resistant bacteria. Bacterial colonies have been shown to confer advantageous genetic …

Technology Applications To Enhance The Interpreter Referral Process And Address Changes In The Industry, Cindy Walsh Oct 2019

Technology Applications To Enhance The Interpreter Referral Process And Address Changes In The Industry, Cindy Walsh

JADARA

With the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act, sign language interpreter demands have dramatically increased and non-profit agencies for the Deaf have been inundated with requests for interpreting services. Paper and pencil systems to track interpreter requests, bill for services, and pay the interpreters have quickly become ineffective for handling large volumes of interpreter requests. As Eighinger (1999) asserts, "It is…incumbent upon agencies in order to maintain a competitive advantage to invest in technology." Valley Center of the Deaf (VCD) and Community Outreach Program for the Deaf (COPD) have developed customized software to handle the needs of their interpreter …
