The aim for this practicum was to increase parent, child, and caregiver satisfaction with the site’s extended day care program through training of caregivers and development of appropriate activities. Two groups participated, one for preschoolers through first graders, the other for second through fifth graders.
Three training sessions designed to improve the caregivers’ understanding of the school’s philosophy and goals, basic developmental characteristics of children in the various age groups, and a strategy for effective disciplinary action were implemented. This practicum was designed to provide an alternative setting for those 9 to 16-year-old handicapped, adjudicated youths who, because of anti-social acts, behavioral/emotional problems, learning disabilities, attendance problems, and other reasons, were excluded from the mainstreamed setting. This practicum aimed to provide intervention to preschoolers found at-risk for academic difficulties using a developmentally appropriate curriculum to increase their developmental levels; training for their parents to enhance their parenting skills and knowledge to ensure stability of their children's developmental gains.
The writer coordinated three preschool units in two school districts involving three teachers, three aides, and a speech and hearing specialist providing high quality preschool education to 157 preschoolers; 67 of whom were identified as academically at-risk. Two broad aims were to increase teacher knowledge regarding the transmission of AIDS and to teach them how to protect themselves and others with regards to this disease.

This practicum was designed to provide K-6 grade children with peace making tools. The curriculum was piloted in a public school for one year. The goal was to teach children how to make peace with themselves and with others.
The writer used a combination of strategies in the curriculum to meet the needs of the children; provided self-esteem lessons; utilized conflict resolution techniques, including new approach to group consultation; utilized parent participation/moral education lessons designed to involve the family; and emphasized social skills training.

National Education Corporation, boulder College Campus of Fort Lauderdale, Florida has recently been required to eliminate three degree grinding programs. National Education Corporation, on October 1989, began an extensive reorganization and adjustment program, which included cutbacks, school, closings, and the elimination of various programs at several schools. This reorganization and adjustment was considered essential by the corporation because of the financial difficulties encountered by many of the schools and the drastic decline in the corporate stock values from $30.00 per share to less than $6.00 per share.

This Major Applied Research Project proposed three specific ways to improve the Critical Thinking Skills of students at the Carrie Downie Elementary School as measured by standardized achievement test results, increased placement of students in the Colonial School District's program for the gifted, and the inclusion of critical thinking skills in teacher's daily lessons. During the course of this project, 50 underachieving students were given a learning styles inventory to assess their specific learning needs. The number of homeless persons in the United States has been increasing rapidly over the past few years. Nationwide estimates range between three hundred thousand and three million homeless, with a ten to thirty percent annual increase. Efforts to reduce homelessness consist primarily of the provision of housing and employment.
Dade County Public Schools initiated educational programs for homeless adults in February of 1988. Between 1988 and 1991, over three thousand homeless adults were enrolled in part-time and full-time academic and vocational programs. Practicum aimed to reduce absences, stimulate responsibility for assignments, and increase participation in extracurricular activities among disengaged ninth-grade students. Older students served as role models and peer mentors as they sought to establish that freshmen could control their own success or failure in the high school arena.
Five Intensive after-school workshops trained 20 volunteer 11th-grade students to serve as peer counselors. Emphasis was placed on a positive attitude toward helping others and confidently skills presented with basic counseling skills, active listening, effective message sending, values clarification, decision-making, and goal setting. The Florida International University School of Hospitality Management program has been in existence since 1973. It is the only university program rated by Florida's Board of Regents as a "Distinguished Program" and is consistently ranked by educational and industry leaders as one or the top four programs of its kind in the United States.

The number of Black students enrolled in associate degree nursing programs across the country, including California Community Colleges, is not in proportion to the general population. It is critical that educators pay attention to the need to recruit the minority student and providing measures to retain these students.
