Assimilating Intensive Writing Into Respiratory Therapy Instruction: One Baccalaureate Program’S Experience, Lynda Thomas Goodfellow, Meghana Patil
Assimilating Intensive Writing Into Respiratory Therapy Instruction: One Baccalaureate Program’S Experience, Lynda Thomas Goodfellow, Meghana Patil
Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice
Writing is an important tool in the process of learning and communication. Many universities across the United States recognize the importance of implementing writing into respective learning disciplines through a number of approaches. A respiratory therapy program at a large urban university recently assimilated a writing intensive course into their baccalaureate curriculum over a two-year period. A faculty member and a graduate teaching assistant planned as co-instructors various writing assignments that would incorporate writing as an activity to promote critical thinking and learning. The instructors made a dedicated effort to improve professional communication skills through various writing-to-learn strategies and observed …
Necessity Of Leadership Development In Allied Health Education Programs, Matthew R. Kutz
Necessity Of Leadership Development In Allied Health Education Programs, Matthew R. Kutz
Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice
Why should educational programs teach leadership, and why should universities and colleges who offer allied health care programs be concerned with training future clinicians to be leaders? Leadership development is a topic wrought with passion among business professionals and educators alike. Leadership is something everybody needs and it remains vague and ambiguous. Leadership is a mystical, almost ethereal, quality that you cannot define, yet know when you see. Advancing the allied health care professions and the members of the allied health care community is proving to be difficult without the necessary leadership skills.
An Evaluation Of The Online Learning Program At Middle Georgia Technical College, Ivan Allen
An Evaluation Of The Online Learning Program At Middle Georgia Technical College, Ivan Allen
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
This applied dissertation was designed to evaluate the Online Learning Program at Middle Georgia Technical College, a public technical college in Georgia. Despite the continued proliferation of Internet-based distance education courses at Middle Georgia Technical College, many questions continued to arise about the quality of the program. The Middle Georgia Technical College Online Learning Program had never been evaluated to determine its quality, and the purpose of this study was to accomplish an evaluation of the program.
Subjects in this study included faculty, administrators, and students who participated in the Online Learning Program. The author developed two surveys based on …
Improving Performance On Standardized Tests Through Planned Interventions At Independence Alternative High School, Josephine Bell Jones
Improving Performance On Standardized Tests Through Planned Interventions At Independence Alternative High School, Josephine Bell Jones
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
This study was an investigation of the effects of a tutorial intervention on the grades and standardized test scores of low-performing students in an alternative school setting in the Winston-Salem Forsyth County System. Students in this study attended Independence Alternative High School (IAHSP) because of low test scores, declining grades, and behavioral problems. There had been a continuous decline in the end-of-course tests scores for these students for 3 consecutive years.
During the 1998-2000 school years, the academic performance of these students declined by 10.8%. These students were discouraged learners who did not achieve in the standard high school program. …
Evaluation Of The Influence Of Prior Health Care Experience On Physician Assistant Student Academic Performance, Salvatore Barese
Evaluation Of The Influence Of Prior Health Care Experience On Physician Assistant Student Academic Performance, Salvatore Barese
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
Considerable variability exists in the use of prior health care experience (HCE) as an admission criterion by physician assistant (PA) educational programs. The problem was to justify the current amount and type of HCE required by the New York Institute of Technology PA Program.
The purpose of this project was to determine how PA programs use and define prior HCE and to determine whether the type and/or amount of HCE influence academic performance.
Research questions include how PA programs utilize and define HCE; whether the type and/or amount of HCE predicts academic performance in PA programs, performance on summative and …

Indicators Of Resiliency Among Urban Elementary School Students At-Risk, John L. Rausch, Cheryl R. Lovett, Christopher O. Walker
Indicators Of Resiliency Among Urban Elementary School Students At-Risk, John L. Rausch, Cheryl R. Lovett, Christopher O. Walker
The Qualitative Report
This study was designed to investigate the phenomenon of resiliency among urban elementary school students in an at-risk environment. In contrast with previous studies narrowly focused upon the identification of risk factors, this study utilized a phenomenological qualitative approach to investigate indicators of resiliency from both individual and contextual perspectives. The narrative descriptions of 25 elementary school students in an at-risk environment were analyzed. The results indicated that the participants had strong individual and contextual resiliency indicators through the fifth grade despite being educated in a school district with almost a 60% drop-out rate before high school graduation.
Understanding Reliability And Validity In Qualitative Research, Nahid Golafshani
Understanding Reliability And Validity In Qualitative Research, Nahid Golafshani
The Qualitative Report
The use of reliability and validity are common in quantitative research and now it is reconsidered in the qualitative research paradigm. Since reliability and validity are rooted in positivist perspective then they should be redefined for their use in a naturalistic approach. Like reliability and validity as used in quantitative research are providing springboard to examine what these two terms mean in the qualitative research paradigm, triangulation as used in quantitative research to test the reliability and validity can also illuminate some ways to test or maximize the validity and reliability of a qualitative study. Therefore, reliability, validity and triangulation, …
Joint Stories And Layered Tales: Support, Contradiction And Me Aning Construction In Focus Group Research, Agnieszka Kosny
Joint Stories And Layered Tales: Support, Contradiction And Me Aning Construction In Focus Group Research, Agnieszka Kosny
The Qualitative Report
This paper uses focus group data about women’s work experiences gathered in five Canadian east coast communities to examine some of the strengths and weakness associated with focus group research. I explore the case made against the use of focus group methods and the basis for some of the critiques aimed at focus group research. By examining the evolving discussions between focus group members, it is possible to understand some of the benefits of group-talk, including the creation of a unique opportunity for interaction, joint meaning creation and contradiction.
The Impact Of Devolution On Organizational Effectiveness: An Exploratory Case Study Of Faith-Based Child Care, Javier Stanziola, Tania Schmitz
The Impact Of Devolution On Organizational Effectiveness: An Exploratory Case Study Of Faith-Based Child Care, Javier Stanziola, Tania Schmitz
The Qualitative Report
Although the foundations of President Bush’s faith-based initiative could be traced back at least to Colonial times, the re-packaging of this idea has raised concerns about the role of the federal government in the affairs of faith based organizations, the professionalization of social services, rent seeking, and the crowding out of private funding. This paper aims to examine the local implications of decentralizing the provision of social services in Lee County, Florida. More specifically, we will identify how devolution has affected the organizational effectiveness of faith-based organizations in the day care sector. For this paper, organizational effectiveness was defined in …

Objective: Two major strategies have typically been used to assess recent drinking: (1) Daily Estimation (DE) measures such as the Timeline Followback (TLFB) and (2) Quantity-Frequency (QF) summary measures. Although QF measures provide a quick and easy measure of consumption, they have been criticized as not being able to capture sporadic and unpatterned drinking (e.g., days that reflect important social and/or health risks). The TLFB, a psychometrically sound drinking assessment method, is able to capture all drinking, including sporadic heavy days and unpatterned drinking. In some situations, however, recall of daily drinking may not be possible or practical (e.g., limited …
Editor’S Reflections: Peacemaking Among Helping Parties, Honggang Yang
Editor’S Reflections: Peacemaking Among Helping Parties, Honggang Yang
Peace and Conflict Studies
Excerpt
I would like to take this opportunity to initiate a dialogue over some issues of conflict management among ourselves as third parties or helping professionals. The challenges of managing interpersonal conflicts or performing internal peacemaking are as real and relevant as the challenges of our professional undertaking in handling “outside” disputes. While recognizing there are no ready formulae to address these challenges, I invite you to join in the open-minded dialogues to examine expectations and premises often assumed among helping professionals in the fields.
The Prospect Of Multi-Level Voting In Post-Peace Accord Northern Ireland, Roger Mac Ginty
The Prospect Of Multi-Level Voting In Post-Peace Accord Northern Ireland, Roger Mac Ginty
Peace and Conflict Studies
This article reviews the possibility of multi-level voting in Northern Ireland in the wake of the 1998 peace accord. Post-peace accord elections can act as powerful indicators of the fate of a peace. Using Reif and Schmitt’s framework of second-order elections, it finds some evidence of varying electoral behaviour according to the electoral arena. The article also uses original data from a major opinion survey to assess public attitudes towards the suite of governing institutions with powers in or over a devolved Northern Ireland. The evidence of multi-level voting is limited and does not extend to electors abandoning ethnic voting …

Following an acute hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection, clearance or persistence is determined in part by the vigor and breadth of the host immune response. Since the human leukocyte antigen system (HLA) is an integral component of the immune response, we hypothesized that the highly polymorphic HLA genes are key determinants of viral clearance. HLA class I and II genes were molecularly typed in 194 Caucasian individuals with viral persistence and 342 matched controls who had cleared the virus. A single class I allele, A*0301 (odds ratio [OR], 0.47; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.30 to 0.72; P = 0.0005) was …

Reconstructing The Genomic Architecture Of Mammalian Ancestors Using Multispecies Comparative Maps, William J. Murphy, Guillaume Bourque, Glenn Tesler, Pavel Pevzner, Stephen J. O'Brien
Biology Faculty Articles
Rapidly developing comparative gene maps in selected mammal species are providing an opportunity to reconstruct the genomic architecture of mammalian ancestors and study rearrangements that transformed this ancestral genome into existing mammalian genomes. Here, the recently developed Multiple Genome Rearrangement (MGR) algorithm is applied to human, mouse, cat and cattle comparative maps (with 311-470 shared markers) to impute the ancestral mammalian genome. Reconstructed ancestors consist of 70-100 conserved segments shared across the genomes that have been exchanged by rearrangement events along the ordinal lineages leading to modern species genomes. Genomic distances between species, dominated by inversions (reversals) and translocations, are …

Vertical profiles in the lower troposphere of temperature, relative humidity, sulfur dioxide (SO2), ozone (O3), condensation nuclei (CN), and carbon monoxide (CO), and horizontal distributions of twenty gaseous and particulate species, are presented for five regions of southern Africa during the dry biomass burning season of 2000. The regions are the semiarid savannas of northeast South Africa and northern Botswana, the savanna-forest mosaic of coastal Mozambique, the humid savanna of southern Zambia, and the desert of western Namibia. The highest average concentrations of carbon dioxide (CO2), CO, methane (CH4), O3, …
