Third-Wave Feminism In Legally Blonde, Lauren Butler
Third-Wave Feminism In Legally Blonde, Lauren Butler
Undergraduate Student Symposium
Both Amanda Brown’s novel, Legally Blonde, and the film version based on her chick-lit book, emphasize key elements of feminism and seek to empower women. Legally Blonde exemplifies the “strand” of feminism known as the “third-wave” (Dole 87). Third wave feminists seek to reclaim their femininity, and as Carol M. Dole put it, “reclaim pink” (89). The film and novel portray the epitome of a true third-wave feminist, Elle Woods (Reese Witherspoon). She is a woman who proudly flashes her girlie appearance, refuses to conform to society’s expectations of women, achieves greatness though her determination and diligence, and celebrates …

Positron Emission Tomography, Stephanie Sultan, Kenrick Raza, Tania Lopez
Undergraduate Student Symposium
The research project created was done in order to discuss a particular imaging technology known as Positron Emission Tomography (PET). Many aspects of PET were included in. The research covered the history of PET from the 1950’s, discussed the advantages and disadvantages of the radioactivity used in PET, as well as the various medical applications of the technology. PET was compared to other imaging techniques such as Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and Computerized Tomography (CT), and was found to more accurate in diagnostic procedures than the two. The economic aspects and practicality of PET were also touched upon. Overall, PET …
Potential Materials For Hydrogen Storage. Synthesis Of Building Blocks For New Metal – Organic Frameworks, Nadia Rampersaud
Potential Materials For Hydrogen Storage. Synthesis Of Building Blocks For New Metal – Organic Frameworks, Nadia Rampersaud
Undergraduate Student Symposium
As reserves of fossil fuel become depleted the need for alternative sources of energy grow increasingly more important. The use of hydrogen gas as a fuel is one potential alternative energy source. However gases such as hydrogen are difficult to store and transport because even small amounts require a proportionately large amount of space. One way to combat this problem may be to create porous materials which may absorb large quantities of gas for storage in a much smaller space. MOF (metal-organic- framework) compounds have been demonstrated to have great potential as candidates for gas storage. MOF compounds are composed …
Mythmaking, National Identity And Balkan History, Tajhira Omphroy
Mythmaking, National Identity And Balkan History, Tajhira Omphroy
Undergraduate Student Symposium
The Balkans, a region seen as “the powder keg of Europe” since the 17th century, is a complex labyrinth of nationalism, ethnicity and religion. Balkan history is best explained in terms of the myths that are the foundation of both religious and nationalistic fervor for the various Balkan ethnic groups. The protagonists of these myths have become not only national heroes, but also saints of the Orthodox Church. In this way, the mythology of each Balkan nation or ethnic group envelops both nationalistic pride and religious beliefs, the result of which is a powder keg that frequently explodes.

The Molecular Basis Of High-Altitude Adaptation In Deer Mice, Jay F. Storz, Stephen J. Sabatino, Federico G. Hoffmann, Eben Gering, Hideaki Moriyama, Nuno Ferrand, Bruno Monteiro, Michael W. Nachman
Biology Faculty Articles
Elucidating genetic mechanisms of adaptation is a goal of central importance in evolutionary biology, yet few empirical studies have succeeded in documenting causal links between molecular variation and organismal fitness in natural populations. Here we report a population genetic analysis of a two-locus α-globin polymorphism that underlies physiological adaptation to high-altitude hypoxia in natural populations of deer mice, Peromyscus maniculatus. This system provides a rare opportunity to examine the molecular underpinnings of fitness-related variation in protein function that can be related to a well-defined selection pressure. We surveyed DNA sequence variation in the duplicated α-globin genes of P. maniculatus …
Understanding Total Quality Management In Context: Qualitative Research On Managers’ Awareness Of Tqm Aspects In The Greek Service Industry, Alexandros G. Psychogios, Constantinos Vasilios Priporas
Understanding Total Quality Management In Context: Qualitative Research On Managers’ Awareness Of Tqm Aspects In The Greek Service Industry, Alexandros G. Psychogios, Constantinos Vasilios Priporas
The Qualitative Report
This study addresses managers’ awareness and familiarity with Total Quality Management (TQM). Eighteen (18) semi-structured, in-depth interviews were conducted with managers working in a variety of service organizations in Greece. The major argument of the study is that although the acronym TQM and some of its concepts and practices are known by a range of public and private sector managers, actual awareness of its “soft” side is often superficial, and managers have a relatively poor understanding of it. TQM is neither resisted nor directly absorbed by them, but they tend to see it from the technical point of view, being …

Mentoring Qualitative Research Authors Globally: The Qualitative Report Experience, Ronald J. Chenail, Sally St. George, Dan Wulff, Maureen Duffy, Martha Laughlin, Kate Warner, Tarmeen Sahni
The Qualitative Report
Authoring quality qualitative inquiry is a challenge for most researchers. A lack of local mentors can make writing even more difficult. To meet this need, The Qualitative Report ( TQR ) has helped authors from around the world develop their papers into published articles. TQR editorial team members will discuss the history of the journal, their philosophy of author development; manuscript development strategies; solutions for managing differences; challenges working worldwide; authors’ feedback; and the collective global futures of TQR and qualitative researcher
Oral History As A Social Justice Project: Issues For The Qualitative Researcher, Valerie J. Janesick
Oral History As A Social Justice Project: Issues For The Qualitative Researcher, Valerie J. Janesick
The Qualitative Report
I am writing this to assist researchers in training and experienced researchers in understanding ways to view oral history as a social justice project. This paper will illuminate the importance of oral history in terms of enriching the knowledge base of qualitative research methods as well. Oral history provides us with an avenue of thick description, analysis, and interpretation of people’s lives through probing the past in order to understand the present .The postmodern appreciation of the study of people and their stories, those stories from persons generally on the outside or periphery of society, offer a unique opportunity to …
Qualitative Research In Counseling: A Reflection For Novice Counselor Researchers, Randolph Bowers, Victor Minichiello, David Plummer
Qualitative Research In Counseling: A Reflection For Novice Counselor Researchers, Randolph Bowers, Victor Minichiello, David Plummer
The Qualitative Report
Counselors practice in a wide range of disciplines, but also represent a distinct discipline separate from medicine, psychology, and social work. Particularly in countries like Australia, Canada, and the Asia Pacific nations, as a relatively new field, counseling is taking up the challenges of encouraging a research culture that can both critique and support clinical practice and counselor education. This paper is thus written to support novice counselor researchers, and to inspire an emerging research culture through sharing formative experiences and lessons learned during a qualitative research project exploring minority issues in counseling.
On Becoming A Qualitative Researcher: The Value Of Reflexivity, Diane Watt
On Becoming A Qualitative Researcher: The Value Of Reflexivity, Diane Watt
The Qualitative Report
Learning how to conduct qualitative research may seem daunting for those new to the task, especially given the paradigm ’s emphasis on complexity and emergent design. Although there are guidelines in the literature, each project is unique and ultimately the individual researcher must determine how best to proceed . Reflexivity is thus considered essential, potentially facilitating understanding of both the phenomenon under study and the research process itself . Drawing upon the contents of a reflective journal, the author provides an inside view of a first project, making connections between theory and practice. This personal narrative highlights the value of …

Cardiac remodeling, which typically results from chronic hypertension or following an acute myocardial infarction, is a major risk factor for the development of heart failure and, ultimately, death. The renin-angiotensin system (RAS) has previously been established to play an important role in the progression of cardiac remodeling, and inhibition of a hyperactive RAS provides protection from cardiac remodeling and subsequent heart failure. Our previous studies have demonstrated that overexpression of angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) prevents cardiac remodeling and hypertrophy during chronic infusion of angiotensin II (ANG II). This, coupled with the knowledge that ACE2 is a key enzyme in the …

Recovery from acute hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection requires a broad, vigorous T-cell response, which is enhanced in mice when chemokine receptor 5 (CCR5) is missing. To test the hypothesis that production of a nonfunctional CCR5 (CCR5Δ32 [a functionally null allele containing a 32-bp deletion]) increases the likelihood of recovery from hepatitis B in humans, we studied 526 persons from three cohorts in which one person with HBV persistence was matched to two persons who recovered from an HBV infection. Recovery or persistence was determined prior to availability of lamivudine. We determined genotypes forCCR5Δ32 …
