Diverse Bacterial Pks Sequences Derived From Okadaic Acid-Producing Dinoflagellates, Roberto Perez, Li Liu, Jose V. Lopez, Tianying An, Kathleen S. Rein
Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles
Okadaic acid (OA) and the related dinophysistoxins are isolated from dinoflagellates of the genus Prorocentrum and Dinophysis. Bacteria of the Roseobacter group have been associated with okadaic acid producing dinoflagellates and have been previously implicated in OA production. Analysis of 16S rRNA libraries reveals that Roseobacter are the most abundant bacteria associated with OA producing dinoflagellates of the genus Prorocentrum and are not found in association with non-toxic dinoflagellates. While some polyketide synthase (PKS) genes form a highly supported Prorocentrum clade, most appear to be bacterial, but unrelated to Roseobacter or Alpha-Proteobacterial PKSs or those derived from other Alveolates …

Section 1201 of the 1998 Digital Millennium Copyright Act provided sweeping protection for technological measures or virtual locks on digital content to protect the entertainment industries-including music, films, games, and consumer electronics. Manufacturers use digital rights management (DRM) authorized under the law to lock down all software embedded in products, movies on DVDs, and audio files sold on iTunes and other Internet sites. DRM unfairly extends copyright and that legal protection is unnecessary to the robust development of new creative works Critics of the DMCA have charged that the law has extended well past its anti-piracy role to undermine fair …

Survey Of Leadership Programs: Valued Characteristics Of Leadership Within The Deaf Community, Deborah Kamm-Larew, Marcia Lamkin
JADARA
This study surveyed leadership programs operating for and by the Deaf community through questionnaire and interview data. Three categories of leadership development were identified as currently operating in the United States for people who are Deaf and Hard of Hearing: youth leadership programs, special interest mentoring groups, and formal leadership training programs focused on professional development and leadership skills. In addition, this study identified common leadership traits and training methods within these programs. Using a randomized list of leadership traits, valued characteristics were identified. The traits chosen most often were empowerment, advocacy, and decision making skills.

The northern extension of the Florida reef tract and a complex of limestone ridges run parallel to the subtropical Atlantic coastline of southeast Florida. Spanning 170 km from the northern border of Biscayne National Park (BNP) in Miami-Dade County to the St. Lucie Inlet in Martin County, the reefs and hardbottom areas in this region support a rich and diverse biological community (Figure 5.1). Nearshore reef habitats in southeast Florida include hardbottom areas, patch reefs and worm reefs (Phragmatopoma spp.) exhibiting abundant octocoral, macroalgae, stony coral and sponge assemblages. Offshore, coral reef associated biotic assemblages occur on linear Holocene Acropora …

The Colonial Zoanthid Palythoa Caribaeorum: Population Dynamics On Southeast Florida Reefs, Joanna C. Walczak
HCNSO Student Theses and Dissertations
The colonial zoanthid Palythoa caribaeorum (Cnidaria, Zoanthidea) (Duchassaing and Michelotti 1861) is a major benthic component of most Caribbean reefs and is an extremely aggressive spatial competitor (Suchanek and Green 1981). This study looks at annual visits to 16 permanent monitoring sites over 3 reef designations (Inshore Ridge Complex, Middle Reef, and Outer Reef) in Broward County, Florida from 2002-2006. The data obtained in this study fills an informational void regarding the role of zoanthids in the southeast Florida reef benthic community. The study was conducted in two parts. Part One used digital imagery analysis to quantify the spatial cover …

The Career Experiences Of Deaf Supervisors In Education And Social Service Professions: Choices, Mobility And Networking A Qualitative Study, Denise Kavin, Kim Brown-Kurz,
JADARA
In this qualitative study, the researchers interviewed eleven deaf and hard of hearing
professionals holding supervisory positions in educational and social service professions regarding factors that have affected their career experiences, specifically regarding choices, mobility, and networking. The respondents shared their experiences navigating the career ladder, including strategies used to move forward in the workplace such as networking and the use of technologies. Common threads such as tokenism and merit, communication access, and self-imposed limitations related to career choices, mobility, and networking were identified and discussed.

What Is The Effectiveness Of A Biopsychosocial Approach To Individual Physiotherapy Care For Chronic Low Back Pain?, Susan I. George
What Is The Effectiveness Of A Biopsychosocial Approach To Individual Physiotherapy Care For Chronic Low Back Pain?, Susan I. George
Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice
A systematic review of randomized controlled trials was conducted to investigate the effectiveness of a biopsychosocial approach to management for chronic low back pain when applied by individual physiotherapists. Eight primary databases and three secondary databases were searched electronically. A manual reference search was also performed. To be eligible, trials had to provide treatment according to biopsychosocial principles in primary care or comparable settings. This approach is a holistic intervention that addresses social, psychological, and biological aspects of chronic pain. Included trials defined chronic low back pain as of greater than eight weeks duration. Primary outcome measures were reductions in …

Loop-Strap Type Does Not Affect Facemask Removal Using An Anvil Pruner, Jeff Seegmiller, Darcie Stechschulte-Musielewicz
Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice
Purpose: To compare time and movement characteristics of four different brands of football facemask loop straps during a cutting task. Methods: Ten certified athletic trainers, age 24.8 ± 3.4, years of experience 2.4 ± 2.5, cut four different brands of football helmet loop straps (ShockblockerTM, ASI (Athletic Specialty), SchuttTM AG (Armourguard) Elite, and RiddellTM) with an anvil pruner. Task completion time was measured with a time code generator. Helmet movement was measured in the lateral flexion plane using 2-dimensional motion analysis. Results:Measureable but non-significant differences were observed between loop strap types (P < 0.05) for dependent variables (time, range movement, and mean movement). Conclusions: Emergency personnel can effectively cut through various brands of football helmet loop straps using an anvil pruner and do not need brand-specific tools for facemask removal. Similar movement characteristics were observed while cutting all four brands of loop straps. Movement occurring during facemask removal may increase cervical displacement and increase injury severity. Measureable differences in cutting time warrant further investigation.

The Language Of Dyspnoea: A Systematic Review, Ashleigh Garrard, Marie Williams
Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice
Dyspnoea is an uncomfortable conscious awareness of breathing. Since the late 1980s, studies on the language used to describe the sensation of breathlessness have emerged in order to understand mechanisms and differences between chronic diseases. This systematic review aimed to consider primary studies of the language of breathlessness in order to describe the evolution of this field, methodological approaches, key findings and, identify areas which require further investigation. A systematic search process was used to identify thirty-five primary studies. This field of study has evolved rapidly over the past eighteen years. Descriptions of the sensation of breathlessness have been acquired …
