The Qualitative Report
Current guidelines for rheumatoid arthritis (RA) treatment state that all decisions should be shared with the patient. Therefore, it becomes necessary to understand in-depth how patients with RA with different levels of health literacy and activation feel about sharing the decision with the health professional and how they experience this process. Grounded theory was used. Data collection included semi-structured interviews with 14 patients with RA. From the analysis of the patients’ narratives, four categories were built: “Accepting the changes: non-shared decisions”; “The patient's rationale: why not share?”; “Reaching the requirements for sharing the decision: expanding the patient’s autonomy"; and "Experiencing …

College Education Students' Learning Experiences On The Advent Of Online Distance Education In The Philippines: A Phenomenological Study, Lalin A. Tuguic, Henry P. Bilan
The Qualitative Report
The introduction of online distance learning in the Philippines was like the emergence of an uninvited houseguest who refused to leave. This pandemic disrupted the status quo of education, and as a result, institutions resorted to using online distance learning methods. The purpose of this research was to explore the home-based learning experiences of college education students. Phenomenological interviews were used to collect information from 15 participants of the study. Overall, a text analysis was structured around their perspectives on learning during the COVID-19 pandemic and found significant themes related to online distance education like methods and means regarding how …

The Qualitative Report
Traditional Islamic educational institution, known as Dayah, has been popular in Aceh for their ability to produce highly qualified Muslim scholars. This popularity was due to its ability to implement a special type of learning strategy known as beut pubeut or service learning (SL) in the Dayah across Aceh. In spite of the emergence of modern teaching approach, the SL in the Dayah is persistent. Therefore, this research aims to discuss the nature of SL and its strengths and investigate the effectiveness of the SL as implemented in the Dayah. As this is a qualitative study, the data for …

Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice
Purpose: Strategies for reducing burnout and improving work-life balance have been recommended for both organizations and individual athletic trainers. Little is known about what types of self-care (SC) strategies are already being used by athletic trainers. The purpose of this study was to explore and describe the number and type of SC strategies used by athletic trainers on a weekly basis. Methods: We used a cross-sectional design with web-based survey to explore the SC strategies used by athletic trainers. The survey instrument consisted of a SC checklist which asked the participants to select all the SC strategies they engage in …

Beyond Employment: Lower Income Participants' Experiences In A Healthcare Training Program For Medical Assistants, Pharmacy Technicians, And Certified Nursing Assistants, Skye N. Leedahl, Emma Pascuzzi, Karen Mccurdy, Nilton Porto
Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to gain a deeper understanding of participant experiences in a healthcare training program for medical assistants, pharmacy technicians, and certified nursing assistants in areas beyond employment procurement or retention. During the year 2020, employment rates decreased and the cost of living increased. Those changes ultimately put lower-income populations at risk for not meeting the basic needs of life, as it became increasingly more difficult to obtain an adequately paying job. Healthcare training programs for lower income individuals allow for participants to gain the appropriate knowledge and experience required for working in the healthcare …

Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice
Purpose: The majority of athletic trainers (ATs) recognize the importance of patient-reported outcomes (PROs) in clinical practice but encounter unique barriers that limit their implementation. There are no studies that have investigated PROs in the military setting. The purpose of this study was to explore the perceptions, practices, and barriers to implementing PROs in the military setting. Methods: We used a cross-sectional, web-based survey design. Emails were sent to 365 potential participants and 67 were eligible to participate (response rate=18.4%, years practicing in military setting=5.9 ± 5.8years). Participants were invited to complete a web-based survey regarding the uses, benefits, and …

Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice
Purpose: Healthcare providers may experience critical incidents, medical errors, or other adverse patient events in their clinical practice.Providers that encounter such events can experience second victim syndrome (SVS), a condition where providers feel psychological, cognitive, or physical reactions rendering care in these instances. Organizational support may mediate the impacts of SVS after an adverse patient event. We conducted a scoping review to explore and synthesize the literature on the support strategies implemented by healthcare organizations for healthcare providers after adverse patient events. Methods: The initial search strategy yielded 244 articles, 84 of which were removed for duplication. The 3-person …

Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice
Purpose: Newer studies have suggested that interprofessional education (IPE) initiatives led by students can be successful in engaging their peers in IPE. Despite this, few studies exist that examine the student response to student-led IPE activities. The objective of this paper is to describe a student-led IPE program where health professional students learn from each other or from practicing health professionals through a seminar series. Method: Three seminars were arranged with presenters representing dentistry, dietetics, and occupational therapy. Student attendees completed a pre- and post-survey to analyze their interest, knowledge, and likelihood to collaborate with the profession featured in each …

Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice
Telerehabilitation is an alternative and complementary rehabilitation method in which information and communication technologies are used to remove the distance between healthcare professionals and clients. The COVID-19 pandemic has led to the rapid adoption of telerehabilitation services, limiting the in-person rehabilitation services available all over the world. The restrictions that started with the COVID-19 pandemic also negatively affected rehabilitation services, clients, and healthcare professionals, and it was considered essential to provide services using telerehabilitation technology. Therefore, this review aimed to examine and inform health professionals' telerehabilitation practices such as remote assessment, evaluation, intervention, monitoring, supervision, education, and follow-up during the …

CCE Faculty Articles
[Summary] There have been a number of advancements in the detection of personal identifiable information (PII) and scrubbing libraries to aid developers and researchers in their detection and anonymization efforts. With the recent shift in data handling procedures and global policy implementations regarding identifying information, it is becoming more important for data consumers to be aware of what data needs to be scrubbed, why it’s being scrubbed, and to have the means to perform said scrubbing. PII-Codex is a collection of extended theoretical, conceptual, and policy works in PII categorization and severity assessment (Milne et al., 2016; Schwartz & Solove, …

The underpinning of Chronic Venous Insufficiency (CVI) is valvular dysfunction, which manifests on a spectrum depending on the severity of insufficiency and duration of the disease. The mainstay of treatment relies on compression therapy of a proper type and intensity. In older adults, special consideration must be taken during the patient encounter to account for age-related factors. This review discusses the clinical presentation, diagnosis, and mimicking of CVI, focusing mainly on older adults. The epidemiology, risk factors, disease burden, and grave complications -- such as thrombosis and ulceration, are reviewed. The physiological impacts of CVI are described, providing the background …

Periodontal Regeneration Risk Assessment In The Treatment Of Intrabony Defects., Robert A. Levine, Muhammad H A Saleh, Debora R. Dias, Jeffrey Ganeles, Maurício G. Araújo, Franck Renouard, Harold M. Pinsky, Preston D. Miller, Hom-Lay Wang
HPD Articles
BACKGROUND: Regenerative approaches performed in periodontics seems to be efficient in treating intrabony defects. There are, however, many factors that may affect the predictability of the regenerative procedures. The present article aimed to propose a new risk assessment tool for treating periodontal intrabony defects by regenerative therapy.
METHODS: Different variables that could affect the success of a regenerative procedure were considered based on their impact on (i) the wound healing potential, promoting wound stability, cells, and angiogenesis, or (ii) the ability to clean the root surface and maintain an optimal plaque control or (iii) aesthetics (risk for gingival recession).
