A Study Of The Feasibility Of The Use Of Tele Presentation Debating In High School Education, Albert Preston Weeks

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

The target school area has experienced a steady decline in the number of schools actively involved in extracurricular competitive debate despite rapid growth in the number of schools in the district. Numerous problems exist. Liability and travel time are cited as critical reasons for school nonparticipation.

Telepresentation Debating eliminates these problems. The feasibility of maintaining the integrity of the debate process was tested by simulating a televised debate among three separate schools in the target area called Telepresentation Debating. Selected teachers, Judges and students evaluated the success of the experiment, declaring telepresentation debating to be a viable solution to present …

Effects Of A Dispersed And Undispersed Crude Oil On Mangroves, Seagrasses And Corals, T. G. Ballou, Richard E. Dodge, S. C. Hess, A. H. Knap, Thomas D. Sleeter

Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Reports

The primary objective of this study was to evaluate the application of dispersant to spilled oil as a means of reducing adverse environmental effects of oil spills in nearshore, tropical waters. The results of numerous laboratory and field studies have suggested that dispersants may play a useful role in reducing adverse impacts on sensitive and valued environments such as mangroves, seagrasses, and corals. However, the use of dispersants has not been allowed thus far in most situations because of a lack of direct experimental data on the various effects of dispersants and the environmental trade-offs presumed to occur as a …

A Study Of The Relationship Between Self-Esteem And State Board Scores Of Senior Nursing In A School Of Nursing., Jennie Ann Stone

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

This study investigated the relationship between levels of self-esteem of senior students in a school of nursing and a measure of professional achievement – the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN). The hypothesis tested was that there would be a significant relationship between scores on the Self-Esteem Index (S.E.I.) and final scores achieved by seniors on the NCLEX-RN. Thirty senior students comprised the research population. The independent variable self-esteem, was quantified into four categories (negative, low, moderate, high), by using the S.E.I., and the dependent variable was operationalized as the score achieved on the NCLEX-RN. The Pearson Correlation …

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

Societal factors and the internal pressures which developed in response to them converged in the 1980's to affect Evergreen Valley College faculty morale. Burnout has been thought to be a major source of low faculty morale. The human services professions are particularly vulnerable to burnout and for community colleges the major area of concern is its effect on the quality of teaching. It was the purpose of this study to assess the level of faculty burnout to determine the necessity for personal and organizational interventions to reduce it.

The Maslach Burnout Inventory was administered to all full-time faculty. The response …

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

The author structured and implemented lessons for a model home economics program to aid limited-English-proficient (LEP) students in an elementary school district where a substantial number of students were identified as being educationally disadvantaged. The program's goals were to help the LEP students increase English language proficiency while acquiring content area skills and competencies.

The program's structured lessons contained six basic components: vocabulary development, scripted lesson, audiovisual presentation, teacher demonstration, student hands-on activity, and teacher/student evaluation. After completion of the eight lessons, the twenty target LEP students demonstrated measurable, significant gains not only in content area knowledge, skills and competencies …

An Affective Strategy To Teach Self-Monitoring Study Skills To Secondary Severely Emotionally Disturbed (Sed) Students., William T. Roach Jr.

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

This author developed and implemented a self-monitoring study strategy with an affective focus. It was designed to address eight target behaviors that interfered with classroom performance. Based on a questionnaire and inventory administered to 34 students and eight teachers the problems identified were directly associated with the process of independent study. The targeted problems were demonstrating impatience, setting goals, allowing distractions to delay, reviewing paper before turning in, rushing through an assignment, expecting assignment to be difficult, requesting assistance appropriately and relying too much on others. The strategy was eventually used with 13 severely emotionally disturbed students at the secondary …

Improving The Proofreading Skills Of Secondary Students Through The Use Of Motivational Devices, Gay E. Parker Jun 1987

Improving The Proofreading Skills Of Secondary Students Through The Use Of Motivational Devices, Gay E. Parker

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

Proofreading to produce a mailable copy in a typewriting class is a major problem. Often proofreading is not taught but assumed to occur naturally as an intrinsic value to students. (Sustaita, 1983) Literature reveals many techniques on how to proofread, but does not address the problem of how to motivate students enough to continually and meticulously proofread their work.

This practicum proposes to address this problem by first testing to measure the students skill in a secondary typewriting class. Secondly, this practicum proposes to teach and to test the use of proofreaders symbols and the identification of errors as a …

As students' fluency increased, the patterns and models given became less structured so that students used more of their own ideas.

Evaluation was conducted through the use of Quality Writing Guidelines as well as student and parent follow-up surveys. Results indicated increased levels …

The Use Of Improvisation And Mapping To Teach A Dramatic Text, Denise Veronica Aloma

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

The majority of ninth grade students indicated a strong negative attitude toward the study of Shakespearean drama. The same students had difficulty comprehending the Shakespearean language, understanding the plot and characters and recalling important information in the play. The degree of difficulty which these students exhibited was indicated by the best average grades earned on a comprehensive pretest of the play, Merchant of Venice, by William Shakespeare. The teaching strategy used to correct the problem was script-based improvisation and mapping. This strategy involved much activity and utilization of all the senses. Students were involved both as actors and spectators. Recall …
