Increasing Levels Of Abstract Reasoning Ability In First And Second Graders Through Instruction In Inferential Thinking And Analogical Reasoning, Shelley Cindy Obrand
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
The ability of first and second graders to use reasoning skills was addressed by the implementation of strategies to develop inferential thinking and analogical reasoning. Piagetian theory was researched in reference to expected levels of cognitive development. The target group of students received instruction in problem-solving to enable them to make inferences. They also received instruction in determining relationships to enable them to solve analogies. Instructional strategies included: modeling, verbal rehearsal, metacognition, peer tutoring, manipulative learning, and discovery learning. The students' progress was measured by Precision Teaching (a monitoring system involving charting to document growth). Inservice training was provided by …

Development, Implementation, And Evaluation Of An Educational And Career Planning Program For Students Whose College Admissions Credential Was The High School Equivalency Certificate, Howard J. Freas
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
The purpose of this major applied research project was to study the academic performance and persistence (retention) of high school equivalency certificate holders (HSEC) who are students at Bucks County Community College. Major issues considered were the skill level of HSBC students as compared to high school diploma (HSD) holders and the belief that HSEC people were less skilled because of under preparation and, perhaps, their motivation was not as strong.
To explore these issues, group grade point averages, graduation rate and retention data were gathered. Other issues include the quantitative impact of the HSEC holder on higher education and …

For the past ninety years Helene Fuld School of Nursing has been preparing nursing students for licensure as registered nurses. The primary objective of this program has been to graduate a competent nurse. It has been assumed that the educators in the school of nursing have the expertise to design a curriculum that would produce competent nurses. Since a major curriculum change for this school of nursing is planned to take place in the next five years, it was essential that all sources should be investigated in order to determine appropriate competencies for curriculum planning. A potential resource that had …

Many English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) students live in areas in which the English language is not the principal means of communication in everyday life. However, because English is the principal language of the broader society, non-English speakers are motivated to attend ESOL classes in order to participate in the mainstream and to receive society's benefits. The classroom is the principal source of meaningful English input for these students. Opportunities for second language acquisition are limited once the students are outside the classroom. This reality makes the quantity and quality of language presented in the classroom a crucial …

This practicum was concerned with the need for recruitment of minorities into the teaching profession. The problem exists that there is a shortage of minority educators while, at the same time a growing minority school population. This discrepancy was documented by a national survey of the states' Department of Education, the narrative responses and research. Although the duration of the implementation period lasted for six months, response to the implementation is still ongoing. Respondents were asked to indicate if the state had a critical teacher shortage. Sixty-eight percent of the states responded to the survey. Eighteen States (53 percent) replied …

Assessing The Role Of Community Colleges In Regional Economic Development In The Riverside And San Bernardino Metropolitan Area, Ronald O. Kibby
Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive
California community college reform legislation enacted in August 1988 was predicated on the willingness of the colleges to assume an increasingly more prominent role in local, regional, and statewide economic development. Many colleges, especially small community colleges, have not clearly defined their potential role as a catalyst and resource for economic development.
This study had three primary purposes related to the role of the community college in economic development. First, the results of this study should assist administrators at Crafton Hills College, a small two-year public community college in southern California, in defining and implementing the college's economic development mission …

Interchromosomal translocations within lymphoid neoplasms frequently involve the antigen receptor genes. We cloned the breakpoints of the t(11;14)(p15;q11) in a CD3-negative T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia cell line (RPMI 8402) in order to identify new genes potentially involved in T-cell neoplasia. An extensive comparison of both breakpoints and their germ line counterparts indicated that an inadvertant recombinase-mediated break at chromosome segment 11p15 recombined with the delta T-cell receptor at 14q11. The derivative 11 breakpoint resembles a coding joint in which 11p15 rather than a variable region was introduced 5' to a Dδ1Dδ2Jδ1 intermediate rearrangement. Conversely, the …
