The Reliability Of Yolo Object Detection On The Amd Versal In A Proton Radiation Environment, Jacob D. Brown May 2026

The Reliability Of Yolo Object Detection On The Amd Versal In A Proton Radiation Environment, Jacob D. Brown

Theses and Dissertations

Object detection is an important operation for satellites to be able to perform, and in outer-space missions it is crucial that machine learning models perform inference on satellite images accurately and reliably. Where size, weight, power, and other constraints exist, meeting this goal for accurate and reliable object detection is challenging. Additionally, soft errors caused by radiation further disrupt and degrade the operation of object detection in satellites. This thesis studies the performance of a deep learning model on an embedded device, the AMD Versal, in the presence of soft errors. The well-known and high-performing YOLO convolutional neural network was …

I Miss My Computer: Online Artistry, Web Aesthetics, And Coming-Of-Age In A Digital Landscape, Catherine Capeci May 2026

I Miss My Computer: Online Artistry, Web Aesthetics, And Coming-Of-Age In A Digital Landscape, Catherine Capeci

Masters Theses

This thesis explores how young artists develop their creative practices in a world informed by digitality. Through survey research of 44 art students between the ages of 14 and 22, as well as a process of autoethnographic inquiry, I examine how artists in high school and college relate to digital imagery, web archives, online gaming, and social media platforms, and how these experiences inform artmaking. I believe that art educators should explore how the internet informs aesthetic and conceptual sensibilities, and how these sensibilities show up in young artists’ work, more so than focus on digital media as its own …

Where My Memory Settles, Rachel Kobb May 2026

Where My Memory Settles, Rachel Kobb

Masters Theses

My memory is blurry but ever present in an atmospheric state. Through my investigations of memory and sensorial experience, this thesis is an attempt to understand how the body recalls the spaces I have spent the most time: my various homes through life.

The output of this thesis is a paper installation that layers and translates spatial qualities of my past homes. The home is not a neutral container, but instead a space that should support a sense of retreat and security. Drawing upon Gaston Bachelard’s zones of experience, I explore how a domestic space is moved through distinct zones. …

Between Nature And Architecture : A Dialogue Of Five Elements, Niexiangyi He May 2026

Between Nature And Architecture : A Dialogue Of Five Elements, Niexiangyi He

Masters Theses

Rooted in classical Chinese cosmology, the Daoist Five Elements (Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water) describe dynamic cycles of mutual generation (sheng)—in which one element produces or supports another—and restraint (ke)—in which elements regulate or limit one another to maintain balance. Rather than a system of symbolic representation, these interactions outline a relational model of equilibrium based on interdependence and continuous transformation. Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water can inform a contemporary design framework for interior and architectural practice. It interprets these cycles as a form of spatial logic that guides material selection, structural organization, environmental modulation, and experiential sequencing, …

Soft Space/Strong Support, Keqian Li May 2026

Soft Space/Strong Support, Keqian Li

Masters Theses

Children with early developmental challenges such as anxiety disorders, ADHD, autism, and sensory regulation difficulties often navigate environments that are not designed to support their emotional, cognitive, and sensory needs. In many educational and community spaces, inclusion is treated as an add-on or a specialized accommodation rather than as a fundamental design principle.

This thesis argues that inclusion should be the standard, not the exception, and that interior architecture can function as an early intervention tool that actively supports children’s development. This project examines how spatial design can influence emotional regulation and social interaction for children with early developmental challenges. …

Jadughar: The House Of Magic, Dhruvi A. Shah May 2026

Jadughar: The House Of Magic, Dhruvi A. Shah

Masters Theses

Jadughar or the House of Magic is what people call a 'museum' in parts of South Asia. The practice of museum making, at its origin, is the act of collecting, preserving, interpreting and representing a culture’s tangible and intangible heritage to make it accessible to diverse audiences. Since the early 19th century such practices have been performed at various kala bhandars (art centers) in India, without the need of a formal or institutional organisation. The British introduced the model of a ‘museum’ in South Asia, with the aim of not only preserving ethnographic collections, but also showcasing their power and …

The Frame You're Holding, Andrea Mato May 2026

The Frame You're Holding, Andrea Mato

Masters Theses

The Frame You're Holding explores how my photographer's eye transitioned into a graphic designer's voice. The projects presented explore how to weave the textural and subjective qualities of photography into a design context. My practice explores how the frames of graphic design – the page of a book, the browser window, or the wall of an exhibition – can be expanded or reimagined. As a designer, I became the translator of content into form, seeking to author the design while collaborating with other voices. The Frame You're Holding is a snapshot of my practice as a graphic designer, encapsulating my …

My Mother The Mountain, Ricky Vasan

Masters Theses

Teach me How to Write a Love Song

I catch a glimpse of my mother sitting on her bed in her bedroom from the bathroom mirror. What a rare occurrence! One I am not fortunate enough to witness as often as I would like. A moment that I know —even before it has occurred—will one day become my dearest desire for wanting to turn back time. This moment is a mirage. Once I return to my senses, after the passing of a twelve-hour lag, it will already be too late.

This is the place where I wish to work from. …

Looking In All Directions, Abby Sunde May 2026

Looking In All Directions, Abby Sunde

Masters Theses

“Looking in All Directions” mobilizes attention towards the concepts of ‘desettling’ through art and ‘desettling’ as a way of being. Desettling constitutes resistance, resilience, survivance, and refusal of current Western modalities within our society. This body of work is a material exploration of these worldviews to find potential ways to embody a practice that aligns ourselves outside of a colonial settler mindset while living within its societal condition. Using glass, sound, and installation work, the artist un-centers expected encounters with an inherited dominant worldview and instead offers an actualized shift in awareness. Concepts of interconnectedness, interwoven time, and embodied memories …

Dead Reckoning, Jeremy A. Grail May 2026

Dead Reckoning, Jeremy A. Grail

Masters Theses

For over a century, conceptual, social, and legal frameworks have governed human relationships with technology by dematerializing data and personal information. From the early twentieth century, when human speech was converted into electrical pulses through telephone wires, to today’s pressure to integrate sensing, computation, and automation into every facet of contemporary life, electronic communications have become increasingly detached from the body and systematically defined as a weightless, immaterial asset.

This thesis refutes the industry-led myth of the “immaterial cloud” by revealing the presence and transmission of data to be a series of physical, tectonic, and spatial events that are woven …

Implementing Cbt-I Coach App Education During Initial Psychiatric Evaluations At The Va Pec: A Provider-Facing Quality Improvement Initiative, Sarah J. Kang May 2026

Implementing Cbt-I Coach App Education During Initial Psychiatric Evaluations At The Va Pec: A Provider-Facing Quality Improvement Initiative, Sarah J. Kang

Doctor of Nursing Practice Final Manuscripts

Objective: This evidence-based practice project aims to increase provider implementation of gold standard insomnia treatment, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I), by integrating CBT-I Coach app education into initial psychiatric evaluations within a VA psychiatric emergency clinic (PEC).

Background: Insomnia is highly prevalent among veterans and commonly co-occurs with PTSD, depression, and anxiety. National guidelines from the VA, DoD, and American Academy of Sleep Medicine endorse CBT-I as first-line treatment. Despite this, pharmacotherapy is the dominating intervention in psychiatric emergency settings. The CBT-I Coach app offers evidence-based CBT-I as a free, VA-developed digital tool, but it remains underutilized in acute …

Playing Into Confidence: A Literature Review, Zoë J. Crowe May 2026

Playing Into Confidence: A Literature Review, Zoë J. Crowe

Expressive Therapies Theses

This integrative literature review examines the relationship between drama therapy and self-efficacy, and its implications for academic success. Traditional measures of achievement emphasize outcomes while overlooking the psychological processes that influence student engagement and persistence. Drawing on interdisciplinary literature, this review synthesizes research on how drama therapy supports self-efficacy through embodiment, role exploration, and structured play. These processes create safe, participatory environments where individuals can rehearse new behaviors and reconstruct self-perceptions. They also align with key mechanisms of self-efficacy development, including mastery experiences and emotional regulation. This review identifies gaps in current research, particularly the limited integration of drama therapy …

Methods: A 30-minute in-service was provided to 14 family practice providers at the clinic. The prescription rate of naltrexone and LAI naltrexone was evaluated for the baseline period of February …

Empowering Recovery: Implementing Ace Screenings To Enhance Care For Patients With Substance Use Disorders, Joshua Wolf May 2026

Empowering Recovery: Implementing Ace Screenings To Enhance Care For Patients With Substance Use Disorders, Joshua Wolf

Doctor of Nursing Practice Final Manuscripts

Objective: This evidence-based practice project evaluated the impact of implementing adverse childhood experience (ACE) screenings for patients with substance use disorders (SUDs) in an outpatient community behavioral health clinic.

Background: ACEs are strongly associated with an increased risk of developing SUDs, chronic medical comorbidities, and negative treatment outcomes. Despite consistent evidence supporting the need for identification of ACEs and implementing trauma-informed care, standardized ACE screening is not routinely incorporated into outpatient SUD treatment, potentially limiting the identification of the need for education and referrals.

Methods: The ACE Questionnaire for Adults was implemented during routine psychiatric visits for patients diagnosed with …

Insects And Arthropods And Their Role In Human Society, Emily Marie Perez-Medina May 2026

Insects And Arthropods And Their Role In Human Society, Emily Marie Perez-Medina

Whittier Scholars Program

With brightly colored exoskeletons, an excess of both eyes and legs, and seemingly  unpredictable behaviors, insects and arthropods come across as unusual and strange to general audiences. For this reason, they are often classified as “gross,” “ugly,” or “scary,” antagonists  in popular culture. What is not recognized when being represented to the masses is how much human society depends on their presence, and how a world without insects would be a world without most things humans know and love. In order to help reduce the stigma of these tiny, yet mighty creatures, this project serves as a call to action …

Intimate Partner Violence Screening And Awareness Pilot Project, Eleasha P. Partner May 2026

Intimate Partner Violence Screening And Awareness Pilot Project, Eleasha P. Partner

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Projects

Background: In the United States, one in four women experiences intimate partner violence (IPV), highlighting the critical need for improved screening and intervention within the healthcare system. Routine visits in healthcare settings present a significant opportunity for healthcare providers to identify and address IPV.

Local Problem: A primary care family practice clinic in San Leandro, California , currently lacks a standardized evidence-based screening toolkit for IPV.  The absence of such a toolkit creates a gap in practice, leaving patients at risk of undiagnosed IPV and its related consequences.  To address this gap, there is a pressing need for the development …

How Should West Virginia Approach Scholarship Granting Organizations, Elaine Waterhouse Wilson May 2026

How Should West Virginia Approach Scholarship Granting Organizations, Elaine Waterhouse Wilson

West Virginia Law Review Online

The One Big Beautiful Bill Act (“OB3”) introduced Scholarship Granting Organizations (“SGOs”) into federal tax law through new Internal Revenue Code § 25F, which creates a federal income tax credit for qualifying contributions to state-certified scholarship organizations beginning in 2027. Because SGOs have long existed at the state level as part of broader school choice initiatives, Code Section 25F delegates to participating states, including the responsibility to certify eligible organizations and establish oversight procedures. West Virginia’s decision to participate in the federal SGO framework, coupled with its recent adoption of the Hope Scholarship Program, places the state at the center …

Collecting Meaning: A Study On Collecting As An Artmaking Practice, Johanna Young May 2026

Collecting Meaning: A Study On Collecting As An Artmaking Practice, Johanna Young

Masters Theses

This thesis explores how we practice creativity and construct narratives through the act of building collections. It examines collecting as both an innate creative impulse and a learned process. Using arts-based research and narrative inquiry, the study considers how our collecting habits reflect the ways we process information and express personal artistic interests. Drawing from personal experiences, this thesis mines the idea of the subconscious through the artistic lens of collecting.

The Ever-Changing Immigration Experience: An Oral History On The Impacts Of Immigration For Connecticut Latine Residents / Una Experiencia En Cambio Constante: Una Historia Oral De Los Impactos De La Inmigración Por Habitantes Latines En Connecticut, Sam S. Arevalo-Hoefer May 2026

The Ever-Changing Immigration Experience: An Oral History On The Impacts Of Immigration For Connecticut Latine Residents / Una Experiencia En Cambio Constante: Una Historia Oral De Los Impactos De La Inmigración Por Habitantes Latines En Connecticut, Sam S. Arevalo-Hoefer

Honors Scholar Theses

This paper is an oral history study focused on Latine immigration experiences in Connecticut from six different individuals sharing their stories and perspectives on the immigration process. I focus on the act of testimony as a source of grassroots knowledge and attempt to spread this notion of community wisdom further through the creation of zines (small-batch, self-published, non-commercial shortform magazines) as a means of making information more accessible and reaching a larger audience on a local level.

I use oral histories as a method of research that can achieve a deeper, more human understanding of how macro level political decisions …

The Ocean of Design is influenced by the shapes of leaves and the clean lines of modern aesthetics, blending functionality with artistic expression. Through this project, I aim to promote my …

Numb., Anna Rapson May 2026

Numb., Anna Rapson

Masters Theses

Social media platforms, from their conception, posed a break in the lived experience of the average human being’s day to day routines. Although access to information has always been shaped by portals into other lived realities—through photojournalism, print legacy media, news broadcasts both on radio and television—social media has posited a novel phenomenological architecture where borders between embodied reality and perception of lived experience are simultaneously blurred and reinforced. This morphed duality of consciousness positions the body and mind in tension, deconstructing pre-social media conceptions of the ontology of lived experience. In a digital world shaped by limitless input by …

Chair For Workplace Morale, Alicia Lee May 2026

Chair For Workplace Morale, Alicia Lee

Masters Theses

Is absurdity frivolous? In contemporary workplace contexts, office workers– from new hires to mid-level managers– are required to maintain composure, attention and productivity amid bureaucratic instability, distractions, and disruptions. This expectation manifests in the form of an office chair.  Since its inception, chairs have represented and disseminated power. Within bureaucratic systems, chairs discipline the body physically and metaphorically, creating the conditions for workers to optimize workflow by remaining comfortable and still for long periods of time.

CHAIR FOR WORKPLACE MORALE disturbs the act of sitting, producing a bounded and altered perceptual environment. Operating within an institutional logic in which humor …

Behind The Curtain: A Strategic Brand Campaign For Rhode, Carolyn Franco May 2026

Behind The Curtain: A Strategic Brand Campaign For Rhode, Carolyn Franco

Student Theses and Dissertations

This capstone project develops a strategic public relations campaign that aims to improve Rhode’s existing brand communication strategy. While Rhode has been highly successful since its launch, selling out its initial product line in minutes and building a waitlist of over 700,000 customers, much of this success has been because of its strong visual branding, organic influencer engagement, and founder-led visibility. However, as the brand continues to grow, expand its skincare line, and introduce new beauty products, its current communication strategy presents several limitations that may impact long-term credibility and consumer trust.

One key challenge is Rhode’s reliance on aesthetically …

The Home And The Self: On Perceptions Of Feminine Virtue, Rebecca Stevens May 2026

The Home And The Self: On Perceptions Of Feminine Virtue, Rebecca Stevens

Masters Theses

Reflecting on my own feelings and experiences with domesticity and on the larger patterns of socialization they reveal, I use decoration and domestic objects to explore my discomfort with the stereotypes of feminine virtue that I grew up around in the American South. These specific ideas of socialized feminine virtue center around domestic service and a focus on appearance. Working primarily in porcelain with the addition of textiles, I embrace materials, styles, and methods of making that are associated with women and girls. Through hand-crafted tableware, dolls, and decorative patterns I critique gendered forms of socialization while questioning historical and …
