A Model To Assist Elementary Principals When A District Changes From A Centralized Decision-Making Process To A School-Centered Decision-Making Process., Tim D. Tarleton

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

This report describes a model created for assisting 15 elementary school principals in making the transition from a district-centered decision-making process to a school-centered decision making process. Issues requiring attention related to culture, trust between principles and central administration, inability of the principals to work together, lack of decision making processes, control of the group by a few principals, and a lack of an agreement upon a process on how they would conduct their business.

The plan included administering a survey to the principals which indicated that there were significant discrepancies between District action and what the principals thought would …

Monologue Or Dialogue In Management Decisions: A Comparison Of Mandatory Bargaining Duties In The United States And Sweden, Timothy A. Canova Apr 1991

Monologue Or Dialogue In Management Decisions: A Comparison Of Mandatory Bargaining Duties In The United States And Sweden, Timothy A. Canova

Faculty Scholarship

Management and labor are adversaries in both U.S. and Swedish industrial relations. The Swedish model, however, is marked by a continual dialogue between the adversaries with the objective of achieving mutual understanding on a wide range of issues. This dialogue has been fostered by Swedish labor law reforms, particularly the Swedish Act on Co-Determination, along with a comprehensive labor market policy to promote employment. The result of such reasoned dialogue is greater labor support for industrial restructurings and management support for the technological modernization of industry. The American system could better be characterized as a monologue. In the U.S. the …

Development And Implementation Of A Community-Drawn Community Life-Based Curriculum For Individuals With Mental Retardation And Developmental Disabilities Living In Summit County., Norman W. Czubaj

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

This report describes a project that resulted in the development and implementation of community life-based curriculum for students in the County of Summit Board of Mental Retardation and Development Disabilities (CSBMR/DD) school program. The Summit curriculum altered the present self contained system of classroom instruction and utilized the community settings as a means to increase the amount of student instruction time in the “real” community environment. The most recent review of the Weaver School programs, by the Ohio Department of Mental Retardation and Development Disabilities suggests that the curriculum and the districts IEP process by re-designed to promote more and …

A Plan To Improve Mathematics Achievement For Students At Central Elementary School, Angela C. Mills Mar 1991

A Plan To Improve Mathematics Achievement For Students At Central Elementary School, Angela C. Mills

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

This report describes a plan for implementing appropriate developmental mathematics practices in the primary grades so that assessment of student needs and knowledge correlated with state required assessment procedures. A large percentage of students beginning at the third grade level had been scoring at or below the national norm on the mathematics portion of the California Achievement Test and had consistently made lower report card grades beginning at the third grade level. Observations and documentation indicated a need for developmentally appropriate mathematics instruction during the beginning years of school so that learning in the mathematics areas was not superficial.

Probable …

Development And Validation Of An Instructional Inservice Program For Higher Education Science Consultants Involved In Florida’S Summer Inservice Institute Program, Susan Elizabeth Chattan Dabb Mar 1991

Development And Validation Of An Instructional Inservice Program For Higher Education Science Consultants Involved In Florida’S Summer Inservice Institute Program, Susan Elizabeth Chattan Dabb

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

The State of Florida requires that all sixty-seven counties within the state participate in a Summer Inservice Institute Program (SIIP) that provides content area instruction to elementary and secondary public school teachers. Critical need areas such as mathematics and science take priority in the consideration for funding and programming in all counties. The state requires that the emphasis in these summer training sessions be placed on college-level content instruction. Workshops presented solely on methods are considered not appropriate.

The rationale for funding the required program is that public school personnel, unlike their postsecondary level liberal arts counterparts, lack content-area training …

The Development Of Procedures For Adopted Policies In The Governance Manual Of The Camden County Educational Services Commission., Anthony R. Sorce

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

This Major Applied Research Project describes a process whereby policies and procedures were developed to correct and eliminate problems which resulted from the deficiency of certain policies in the Governance Manual of the Camden County Educational Services Commission of New Jersey in accordance with federal, state and local regulations.

The present manual was developed in 1982 and was to be updated and/or revised by the Superintendent. However, due to the lack of expertise by the Superintendent and a uninvolved board of directors and instructional staff, procedures were never developed to implement those policies in the Governance Manual. The staff, facilities, …

The Use Of Cooperative Learning Strategies To Improve Achievement And Self Esteem Levels Among A Group Of Middle School Perceptually Impaired Students., John R. Dorney

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

This report described a program for improving student achievement, as measured by the California Test of Basic Skills, and levels of self-esteem, as measured by the Piers-Harris Children’s Self-Concept Scale, in a middle school in a suburban/rural district of middle to upper middle class population.

Analysis of problem symptoms revealed initial perceptual impairments, low levels of self-esteem relative to intellectual and school factors, and a consistent history of below grade level achievement levels. Contributing factors were also found to exist in familial structure and attendance and behavioral factors. The research project sought to improve student performance in these areas through …

Utilizing Integrative Approaches To Increase Academic Efficiency In Eighth Grade At-Risk Learners., Mattie B.H Gay Feb 1991

Utilizing Integrative Approaches To Increase Academic Efficiency In Eighth Grade At-Risk Learners., Mattie B.H Gay

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

This report describes four aspects of a two-year research project to promote an efficacy continuum as a school based paradigm in the face of infusion overload and fragmented instructional delivery system mandates. The targeted group is "at risk" Yellow House eighth grade students for which the project intervenes. The planning and implementation phases of the practicum facilitates renewal, continuity and integration of proposed system goals although the system is in constant upheaval and flux because of the change in two State Chief Officers.

The practicum initiates a school wide metacognitive study- thinking skills program to routinize independent skill development to …

Family Strengths Among Black Families In Alaska: A Case Study, Washington W. Brown Jr. Feb 1991

Family Strengths Among Black Families In Alaska: A Case Study, Washington W. Brown Jr.

Abraham S. Fischler College of Education ETD Archive

The idea of a strong family is a very subjective concept. A strength, according to one set of criteria, could easily be interpreted as a weakness according to another set of criteria--and vice-versa. Most scholars of the family would agree that a strong bond of affection between family members is usually an asset. But if this affection is manifested in extremely dependent and stifling relationships among family members, such a bond would generally be characterized as a "pathological" liability.

The family has traditionally provided the foundation for society, and, though in contemporary America some of its functions have been absorbed …
