The Third: Space Of Place In Transit-Orientated Development, Alex Johnson

Landscape Architecture Theses

This thesis project introduces an urban design concept into the residential suburb of New Hope, Minnesota, connecting social interaction and movement to the hub of the city center. It will illustrate the notion that suburban sprawl is an unsustainable reaction to population growth, and cities need to adapt to these changes by creating smaller habitable spaces that recentralize the urban fabric with mass transit connections. This project is intended to change a suburban neighborhood that has medium to low density into a less suburban setting with mass public transportation integrating accessible ways for the community to connect while remaining in …

Spaces For Developing Sociocultural Capital: A Case Study Of Community Gardens In An Agrarian Community, Jessica Rae Brown

Sociology and Anthropology

Common themes growing out of current research on community gardens center on issues in large urban areas including community-based responses to more healthful food options, local sustainability efforts, and combating urban crime. One area of research that is lacking is how sociocultural capital is generated in smaller metropolitan communities though community gardening. This thesis addresses this void as a means to begin understanding of how the sociocultural networks between community organizations and community gardeners form a symbiotic relationship of interconnected capital production within cities found in historically agrarian regions. This research includes a specific set of methods for investigating Fargo-Moorhead …

Gi Joe: Green Infrastructure For The Average Joe, Zachary Swanson Jan 2012

Gi Joe: Green Infrastructure For The Average Joe, Zachary Swanson

Landscape Architecture Theses

The landscape that supports our cities is often invisible to its inhabitants. This thesis examines how landscape infrastructure can communicate in our lives. The fabric of our cities stitches together the intricate systems we need to sustain our communities. Transportation of goods and services is made possible by a collection of roads, sewers, pipes, power plants, and wires that make up this fabric. How can we integrate green infrastructure into the existing ecological functions of the city? How can these functions intertwine and work cohesively? Suburban environments have the potential to reflect the new urban systems of high-performance landscapes. These …
