Suburban Sequel: A Safer, Walkable Brooks Harbor Community, Haley Lind
Landscape Architecture Theses
Brooks Harbor in West Fargo, North Dakota is a new development that expanded rapidly with the addition of family housing. Due to its sprawl like development pattern, an analysis is done to determine the status of environmental, social, and economic sustainability of the neighborhood. From this analysis and through supporting research it will become known what aspects of sustainability this community excels and lacks in. The end goal will be designing infrastructure and infill improvements through a retrofit of the neighborhood to increase the long-term success of the neighborhood. The early stage of a new development is when the community …

Plant Blindness Represents The Loss Of Generational Knowledge And Cultural Identity, Stacie Blue
Natural Resources Management
Elders from the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa Indians (TMBCI) who have gathered plants within the region have seen the plant numbers reduced and species of plants disappear. Their statements of concern for the plants and their hope for increased plant diversity led to the development of the current research study. Increasing plant knowledge is vital to rebuilding and maintaining the diversity of vegetation within the forest, grassland, and wetland habitats. The present study used an online survey to assess citizens’ ability to identify plants that belong in wetland, grassland, and forest habitats in the area; names of plants; learn …
Chronically Sustainable: Creating A Sustainable Community For The Chronically Ill, Nicole Mathiowetz
Chronically Sustainable: Creating A Sustainable Community For The Chronically Ill, Nicole Mathiowetz
Architecture Theses
In a world that is rapidly changing due to climate change, there is a group of people that are being left behind in the “green” movement. This is not new for these people; the group has often been forgotten and under served by society throughout history. This group is the chronically ill. With a variety of abilities and needs, society has failed to give them the same opportunities in life as the abled body. Buildings are required to have accessible entrances but often time they are far from the main entrances and highlight a person’s disabilities by inconveniencing not just …
Temporary Landscapes: Physically Distanced, Socially Together, Emily Hopfauf
Temporary Landscapes: Physically Distanced, Socially Together, Emily Hopfauf
Landscape Architecture Theses
Temporary landscapes are where things happen, the bread and butter of urban life. Social, political, and economic battles have been waged in the open spaces of our cities. This is where change starts and grows. Even now, during a time when daily life is filled with Zoom meetings, Black Lives Matter marches are happening. Another breed of protesters stormed the capital. While the morality of these actions are in question, things are constantly happening in the temporary which effect how we remember and use spaces. The scope of this design thesis is to understand how to leverage temporary spaces during …
Logistics Of North Dakota State Local Food System: An Empirical Study To Measure Local Food Supply And Demand For Regional Food Hub Feasibility Study, Hamad Alqublan
Transportation Logistics and Finance
Because North Dakota (ND) is one of only four states that do not have a food hub, the purpose of the regional food hub feasibility study was to empirically evaluate whether the ND local food system needs a food hub from a supply and demand perspective. The 21st century has shifted American agriculture and rural life. The number of small and mid-sized farms decreases while the number of more significant farms increases. The food hubs concept has become an increasingly popular response to this agricultural problem. Food hubs cover the gap between farmers and markets and add value to the …
From Brownfield To Permaculture City: Converting A Brownfield Site By Creating A New Community Through Increased Density And Sustainable Permaculture., Kaylee Pierce
Landscape Architecture Theses
Sustainable, permaculture living is a recurring trend in residential design. Society is becoming more aware of the impact humans have on the environment, along with learning ways to minimize an ecological footprint while living a happier and healthier life. Vegetable gardens, fruit orchards, and even chicken coops are becoming more popular to find in a backyard, especially in urban environments. As cities begin to feel the impact of diminishing untouched real estate, developers have turned to brown-field land for residential developments to assist with growing populations. Cities such as Salt Lake City, Utah are experiencing tremendous growth but the city …
Wellness Through Adaptive Reuse, Jared Kramer
Wellness Through Adaptive Reuse, Jared Kramer
Architecture Theses
The International Existing Building Code (IEBC) was first created alongside the International Building Code (IBC) in 1997 to address health and safety concerns in the built environment based upon prescriptive and performance related requirements. Used as a base code standard by most of the United States, the IEBC ensures that existing buildings that are being altered in some significant way are safe and accessible for all occupants. However, little consideration is given to the effects that the built environment has on human wellness in its entirety. Physical and mental wellness are essential aspects of a healthy lifestyle and are even …

O'Donnell Park: Enhancing Downtown Milwaukee’S Economic, Environmental And Social Networks Through Sustainable Design, Justin Flynn
Landscape Architecture Theses
This thesis begins to address, how does a city provide essential resources for a city in a public urban space? A question designers have asked themselves since the beginning of urban design. In this day and age currently, we are getting better at answering this issue, providing urban society with food water, power in ways that have never been done before. However, is what is society doing currently enough? Research begs to differ showing two major problems: First current trends are unsustainable and will not last. Secondly, if fallowing areas of resources are not appealing, users will not use them. …
