Determination Of Growth Inhibitory Effect Of Iminodibenzyl Against Breast Cancer, Harshit Pareshbhai Shah
Determination Of Growth Inhibitory Effect Of Iminodibenzyl Against Breast Cancer, Harshit Pareshbhai Shah
Pharmacy
Breast cancer arises from the culmination of complex process enclosing multiple gene modifications such as cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2). It catalyzes arachidonic acid (AA, downstream ω-6 polyunsaturated fatty acid (ω-6 PUFA)) metabolism to cancer-promoting prostaglandin E2 (PGE2). Hence, COX-2 inhibition was considered an ideal strategy to inhibit the cancer progression. However, COX-2 inhibitors are no longer advised for cancer management due to life threatening cardiovascular adverse events. Recently, we found that inhibition of delta-5-desaturase (D5D, enzyme catalyzing di homo-gamma-linolenic acid (DGLA) metabolism to AA) in breast cancer cells by siRNA/shRNA caused the diversion of DGLA metabolism from PGE2 to anticancer metabolite 8-hydroxyoctanoic …

Does Mom Know Best? The Influence Of Baby-Led Weaning On Picky Eating And Sweetener Use, Savanna Elizabeth Jean Westrom Jellison
Human Development and Family Science
Baby-led weaning, the process of an infant feeding themselves at the introduction of solid foods as opposed to being spoon-fed by a caregiver, is an under-researched area of infant development. There is a significant gap in knowledge regarding how baby-led weaning influences aspects of this critical period of development including picky eating and parental use of sweeteners or additives. The purpose of this research was to better understand the influence that feeding method has on optimal infant development. The central hypotheses were (1) that infants who baby-led weaned would have greater food acceptance and be less likely to be labelled …
Understanding Programmed Cell Death Pathways By Characterizing Barley Disease Lesion Mimic Mutants, Wail Alsolami
Understanding Programmed Cell Death Pathways By Characterizing Barley Disease Lesion Mimic Mutants, Wail Alsolami
Plant Pathology
Programmed cell death (PCD) in plants refers to rapid and localized cell death that occurs as a result of regular biological processes, or in response to infection or injury. Understanding the molecular mechanisms of PCD will fill key knowledge gaps in regard to plant development or resistance mechanisms. Upon pathogen invasion salicylic acid and reactive oxygen intermediate (ROI) signaling responses are triggered that contribute to the PCD outcome. Substantial research efforts have been conducted to identify genes involved in these PCD pathways including the generation and characterization of disease lesion mimic mutants (DLMMs) that spontaneously express PCD and necrotic lesions …
Season Extension Using Supplemental Soil Heat In A North Dakota High Tunnel For Warm Season Vegetable Production, Binu Rana
Plant Sciences
Vegetable production options in North Dakota are limited by environmental challenges. Combining soil heating cables and row covers within a high tunnel could protect crops from frost, extending the growing season. Three planting dates at three-week intervals, low tunnel coverings (clear plastic, light frost blanket, and heavy frost blanket), and supplemental soil heating (untreated and soil heating coils) were examined in Absaraka, ND for the effects on two basil and two snap bean cultivars. Soil heating cables increased cumulative harvested basil height by 20% over the untreated control in 2018, but not 2019. Overall, early basil plantings provided the greatest …
Logistics Of North Dakota State Local Food System: An Empirical Study To Measure Local Food Supply And Demand For Regional Food Hub Feasibility Study, Hamad Alqublan
Transportation Logistics and Finance
Because North Dakota (ND) is one of only four states that do not have a food hub, the purpose of the regional food hub feasibility study was to empirically evaluate whether the ND local food system needs a food hub from a supply and demand perspective. The 21st century has shifted American agriculture and rural life. The number of small and mid-sized farms decreases while the number of more significant farms increases. The food hubs concept has become an increasingly popular response to this agricultural problem. Food hubs cover the gap between farmers and markets and add value to the …

Exercise And Nutrition To Counter Age-Related Decrements In Muscle Health And Function, Kara Ann Trautman
Health Nutrition and Exercise Science
Muscle atrophy and strength decrements can occur following disease (e.g., cachexia), with increasing age (e.g., sarcopenia), or from disuse related to injury or occupational environment (e.g., microgravity). High-load resistance training and adequate protein and amino acid intake are effective countermeasures. However, high-load training may not be feasible in all populations. Lower intensity resistance training with blood flow restriction (BFR) is an effective alternative and its benefits may be increased when combined with supplementation of protein and leucine. Two studies explored the relationships between nutrient intake and physical activity and the effects of short-term combination on muscle health in middle age. …

Effect Of Livestock Species On Floral Resources And Pollinators In Low-Diversity Grasslands, Jasmine Antonia Villamarin Cutter
Effect Of Livestock Species On Floral Resources And Pollinators In Low-Diversity Grasslands, Jasmine Antonia Villamarin Cutter
Range Science
Livestock management influences the extent to which grazing lands provide resources for native species. We compared how livestock species – sheep or cattle – affected floral resources and bee and butterfly communities in low-diversity, post-Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) pastures managed with patch-burning. We sampled bees and butterflies three times per season 2017-2019 and counted flowering stems within 1 m of transects. Pastures grazed by sheep had significantly fewer flowers and significantly lower floral richness than cattle pastures. Native bees were three to sixteen times more abundant in cattle pastures compared to sheep. Butterfly communities were similar between grazing treatments, because …
Factors Affecting Metabolism During Non-Feeding Stages In Insects, Liz Doralyn Cambron
Factors Affecting Metabolism During Non-Feeding Stages In Insects, Liz Doralyn Cambron
Cellular and Molecular Biology
Although feeding is important for optimal development and growth in insects, there are several points during the insect life cycle that are non-feeding: metamorphosis, pupation, and overwintering. Non-feeding periods also occur in response to internal cues, such as feedback from nutrient thresholds and immune responses being activated. Additionally, as an insect goes through different developmental stages, its nutritional requirements change in response to or in preparation for non-feeding periods. Most physiological responses like feeding are regulated through an interconnection of pathways, but how these networks change in response to different energy demands, such as immune challenges or changes in metabolism, …
Mapping Ur-6, A Bean Rust Resistance Gene In Common Bean, Peter Edward Beerbower
Mapping Ur-6, A Bean Rust Resistance Gene In Common Bean, Peter Edward Beerbower
Genomics and Bioinformatics
Bean rust, caused by the fungus Uromyces appendiculatus (Pers.:Pers) Unger, is a disease of common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) prevalent in the Americas and Africa. The most cost-effective countermeasure to bean rust is genetic resistance. While 17 dominant rust resistance genes (named with Ur- symbol) have been identified in common bean, not all of these genes have been genetically fine-mapped. To expand our knowledge of rust resistance genes in common bean, Ur-6 was mapped in the common bean genome. A GWAS analyses suggested that Ur-6 is present on chromosome Pv07 of P. vulgaris. Two InDel markers tightly linked to Ur-6 were …

The Effects Of Agricultural Factors On Foodborne Bacterial Pathogen Isolation, Attachment, And Survival, Autumn Lea Kraft
The Effects Of Agricultural Factors On Foodborne Bacterial Pathogen Isolation, Attachment, And Survival, Autumn Lea Kraft
Microbiological Sciences
The pathogens enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli (EHEC), Salmonella enterica, and Listeria monocytogenes are prominent causes of foodborne illness. If they reach the pre- or post-harvest environment of produce, they can survive for extended periods of time and transfer to post-harvest processing to reach consumers. There are a multitude of factors that influence this survival, bacterial attachment, and isolation, which have been identified for pre- and post-harvest conditions. However, how these pathogens respond to the changes in these systems requires more work to inform effective control methods. To compare the efficacy of an isolation method in different types of matrices, we used …
Risk Perception, Bias, And Resistance To New Food Tech: The Case Of Gmos, Michael David Wanlass
Risk Perception, Bias, And Resistance To New Food Tech: The Case Of Gmos, Michael David Wanlass
Agribusiness and Applied Economics
GMOs are very controversial among consumers. Many fear that they may have risks scientists are not accounting for. Some GMOs, such as GMO soybean oil, have concerns over their processing methods as well. Traditional risk assessments that only account for hazard do not take these fears into account. Including risk perception, bias, and resistance is a way to account for consumers’ fears. Risk perception, bias, and resistance together create an aggregate that in turn affects willingness-to-purchase. A discrete choice experiment assessed risk perception of, bias towards, and resistance towards GMOs. Respondents revealed their preferences between buying GMO or non-GMO soybean …

Soybean Quality And Market Factor Influence On North Dakota Origin Basis Values, Ryan Wayne Thompson
Agribusiness and Applied Economics
In North Dakota, origin soybean basis values place risk on market participants involved with trading the commodity. Researchers study market factors that influence origin basis values in order to better understand basis movements. Quality is an important component of basis values, but soybean quality in the form of crude protein and essential amino acid content may be implicitly reflected in the basis rather than explicitly in the flat price. A panel data set is created comprised of ten years of data ranging from 2009-2018 and across eight North Dakota agricultural statistics districts. This thesis utilizes principal component analysis to identify …
