Improving K-Nn Search And Subspace Clustering Based On Local Intrinsic Dimensionality, Arwa M. Wali Jul 2018

Improving K-Nn Search And Subspace Clustering Based On Local Intrinsic Dimensionality, Arwa M. Wali

Dissertations

In several novel applications such as multimedia and recommender systems, data is often represented as object feature vectors in high-dimensional spaces. The high-dimensional data is always a challenge for state-of-the-art algorithms, because of the so-called "curse of dimensionality". As the dimensionality increases, the discriminative ability of similarity measures diminishes to the point where many data analysis algorithms, such as similarity search and clustering, that depend on them lose their effectiveness. One way to handle this challenge is by selecting the most important features, which is essential for providing compact object representations as well as improving the overall search and clustering …

Applications Of Big Knowledge Summarization, Ling Zheng Jul 2018

Applications Of Big Knowledge Summarization, Ling Zheng

Dissertations

Advanced technologies have resulted in the generation of large amounts of data ("Big Data"). The Big Knowledge derived from Big Data could be beyond humans' ability of comprehension, which will limit the effective and innovative use of Big Knowledge repository. Biomedical ontologies, which play important roles in biomedical information systems, constitute one kind of Big Knowledge repository. Biomedical ontologies typically consist of domain knowledge assertions expressed by the semantic connections between tens of thousands of concepts. Without some high-level visual representation of Big Knowledge in biomedical ontologies, humans cannot grasp the "big picture" of those ontologies. Such Big Knowledge orientation …

Novel Image Descriptors And Learning Methods For Image Classification Applications, Ajit Puthenputhussery

Dissertations

Image classification is an active and rapidly expanding research area in computer vision and machine learning due to its broad applications. With the advent of big data, the need for robust image descriptors and learning methods to process a large number of images for different kinds of visual applications has greatly increased. Towards that end, this dissertation focuses on exploring new image descriptors and learning methods by incorporating important visual aspects and enhancing the feature representation in the discriminative space for advancing image classification.

First, an innovative sparse representation model using the complete marginal Fisher analysis (CMFA-SR) framework is proposed …

Practical Vortex Beam Generation, Nedime Pelin Mohamed Hassan Salem Jul 2018

Practical Vortex Beam Generation, Nedime Pelin Mohamed Hassan Salem

Dissertations

Vector vortex beams are monochromatic electromagnetic wave fields carrying spin angular momentum (SAM) and orbital angular momentum (OAM). Spin angular momentum is associated with the polarization of the field, whereas OAM yields an azimuthal field dependence of the form exp( jqφ), where φ is the azimuthal angle, and q is an integer designating the helicity order, which is also known as the topological charge of the vortex beam. Vortex beams owe their names to the characteristic on-axis phase singularity and amplitude null.

In this study, a new method to generate vector vortex beams in the microwave regime is devised …

Theoretical Studies Of Photoinduced Dynamics And Topological States In Materials With Strong Electron-Lattice Couplings, Linghua Zhu Jul 2018

Theoretical Studies Of Photoinduced Dynamics And Topological States In Materials With Strong Electron-Lattice Couplings, Linghua Zhu

Dissertations

First, we study the nonequilibrium dynamics of photoinduced phase transitions in charge ordered (CO) systems with a strong electron-lattice interaction and analyze the interplay between electrons, periodic lattice distortions, and a phonon thermal reservoir. Simulations based on a tight-binding Hamiltonian and Boltzmann equations reveal partially decoupled oscillations of the electronic order parameter and the periodic lattice distortion during CO melting, which becomes more energy efficient with lower photon energy. The cooling rate of the electron system correlates with the CO gap dynamics, responsible for an order of magnitude decrease of the cooling rate upon the gap reopening. The work also …

Borehole Communication Via Drill Strings In Oil Wells, Ali Hamdan Alenezi May 2018

Borehole Communication Via Drill Strings In Oil Wells, Ali Hamdan Alenezi

Dissertations

The performance of multichannel and single channel accelerometers used as uphole communication receivers is studied. Using measured channels from the drill string testbed, it is shown that one tri-axial accelerometer can provide nearly uncorrelated signals when compared to two single channel accelerometers. Having uncorrelated signals at the uphole receiver provides a diversity which in turn can lead to an increase in the communication system performance. The use of a strain sensor as a receiver in borehole communication is proposed. Using measured channels from the drill string testbed, the performance of a strain receiver with a single-accelerometer receiver is compared. The …

Secure Entity Authentication, Zuochao Dou May 2018

Secure Entity Authentication, Zuochao Dou

Dissertations

According to Wikipedia, authentication is the act of confirming the truth of an attribute of a single piece of a datum claimed true by an entity. Specifically, entity authentication is the process by which an agent in a distributed system gains confidence in the identity of a communicating partner (Bellare et al.). Legacy password authentication is still the most popular one, however, it suffers from many limitations, such as hacking through social engineering techniques, dictionary attack or database leak. To address the security concerns in legacy password-based authentication, many new authentication factors are introduced, such as PINs (Personal Identification Numbers) …

Survival Analysis Using Archimedean Copulas, Xieyang Jia May 2018

Survival Analysis Using Archimedean Copulas, Xieyang Jia

Dissertations

This dissertation has three independent parts. The first part studies a variation of the competing risks problem, known as the semi-competing risks problem, in which a terminal event censors a non-terminal event, but not vice versa, in the presence of a censoring event which is independent of these two events. The joint distribution of the two dependent events is formulated under Archimedean copula. An estimator for the association parameter of the copula is proposed, which is shown to be consistent. Simulation shows that the method works well with most common Archimedean copula models.

The second part studies the properties of …

Development And Evaluation Of Cooperative Intersection Management Algorithm Under Connected Vehicles Environment, Slobodan Gutesa May 2018

Development And Evaluation Of Cooperative Intersection Management Algorithm Under Connected Vehicles Environment, Slobodan Gutesa

Dissertations

Recent technological advancements in the automotive and transportation industry established a firm foundation for development and implementation of various automated and connected vehicle (C/AV) solutions around the globe. Wireless communication technologies such as the dedicated short-range communication (DSRC) protocol are enabling instantaneous information exchange between vehicles and infrastructure. Such information exchange produces tremendous benefits with the possibility to automate conventional traffic streams and enhance existing signal control strategies. While many promising studies in the area of signal control under connected vehicle (CV) environment have been introduced, they mainly offer solutions designed to operate a single isolated intersection or they require …

Numerical Simulations Of Thin Viscoelastic Films, Valeria Barra

Dissertations

This dissertation is developed in the field of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and it focuses on numerical simulations of the dynamics of thin viscoelastic films in different settings. The first part of this dissertation presents a novel computational investigation of thin viscoelastic films and drops, that are subject to the van der Waals interaction force, in two spatial dimensions. The liquid films are deposited on a flat solid substrate, that can have a zero or nonzero inclination with respect to the base. The equation that governs the interfacial dynamics of the thin films and drops is obtained within the long-wave …

Design, Analysis And Optimization Of Visible Light Communications Based Indoor Access Systems For Mobile And Internet Of Things Applications, Sihua Shao May 2018

Design, Analysis And Optimization Of Visible Light Communications Based Indoor Access Systems For Mobile And Internet Of Things Applications, Sihua Shao

Dissertations

Demands for indoor broadband wireless access services are expected to outstrip the spectrum capacity in the near-term "spectrum crunch". Deploying additional femtocells to address "spectrum crunch" is cost-inefficient due to the "backhaul challenge" and the exorbitant system maintenance. According to an Alcatel-Lucent report, most mobile Internet access traffic happens indoors. To alleviate the "spectrum crunch" and the "backhaul challenge" problems, visible light communication (VLC) emerges as an attractive candidate for indoor wireless access in the 5G architecture. In particular, VLC utilizes LED or fluorescent lamps to send out imperceptible flickering light that can be captured by a smart phone camera …

On Distributed Mobile Edge Computing, Xiang Sun May 2018

On Distributed Mobile Edge Computing, Xiang Sun

Dissertations

Mobile Cloud Computing (MCC) has been proposed to offload the workloads of mobile applications from mobile devices to the cloud in order to not only reduce energy consumption of mobile devices but also accelerate the execution of mobile applications. Owing to the long End-to-End (E2E) delay between mobile devices and the cloud, offloading the workloads of many interactive mobile applications to the cloud may not be suitable. That is, these mobile applications require a huge amount of computing resources to process their workloads as well as a low E2E delay between mobile devices and computing resources, which cannot be satisfied …
