Culturally Sensitive Care For Hispanic Americans, Christopher Dodson, Courtney Hall Nov 2021

Culturally Sensitive Care For Hispanic Americans, Christopher Dodson, Courtney Hall

Scholars Week

The number of individuals that speak another language that is not English as their primary language is at an all time high in the United States, and this can make healthcare harder to access for this portion of the population. This research examines what barriers are present for those who do not speak English as their primary language, such as miscommunications, reduced trust in their provider related to being unable to speak directly with them, parts of their cultural practices and alternative medicines being ignored or misunderstood by healthcare providers, and not feeling secure enough to reveal sensitive information to …

Preventing Ventilator Associated Pneumonia, Ally Samuel, Anna Grace Terry Nov 2021

Preventing Ventilator Associated Pneumonia, Ally Samuel, Anna Grace Terry

Scholars Week

Ventilator Associated Pneumonia is a serious infection in the lungs that affects individuals who are being mechanically ventilated. These patients, who are already critically ill, have decreased defense mechanisms that allow pathogens such as bacteria to invade the sterile respiratory tract (Cooper, 2021). Many of the risk factors for the development of VAP may be preventable, and it is up to the ICU nurses, who care for these mechanically ventilated patients, to play a role in the implementation of certain guidelines and/or bundles that may help with the prevention of ventilator associated pneumonia ( Aysegul et al., 2020). Although ventilator …

Acuity Based Staffing, Halie Lewis, Perri Hogan

Scholars Week

For decades nurses have been fighting for safe nurse to patient ratios. Thousands of studies have been done proving that an increased patient load leads to burnout, job dissatisfaction, occupational injuries, adverse events, and patient mortality. In an effort to keep nurses at the bedside, California passed The Patient Safety and Quality Improvement Act of 2005. This act was the first of its kind as it established legislatively mandated nursing ratios and required staff to take several breaks throughout the day. However, mandated ratios come with a cost that most institutions cannot afford and therefore is not appropriate as a …

Evidence-Based Im Administration, Sarah Simpson, Amanda Bailey

Scholars Week

Abstract

This evidence-based study of literature investigated best IM injection practice. The review was based on evidence from 3 main sources, all found on the CINAHL database. The three studies were reviewed and assessed, and best practice was found to be recommended. The first article found that several healthcare workers use different methods and techniques when administering IM injections, this leads to incorrect administration or injections not evidence based. The second article found that in order administer IM injections effectively, 5mm penetration into the muscle is needed. Therefore, skin bunching is not recommended for the reasoning that it creates a …

A New Approach To Bedside Nursing: Bedside Reporting, Regan Hancock, Samantha Mcclure Nov 2021

A New Approach To Bedside Nursing: Bedside Reporting, Regan Hancock, Samantha Mcclure

Scholars Week

End of shift reporting in our chosen hospital has shown a level of unorganization and ineffectiveness. Currently, the practice is that the nursing staff are seated in or around the desk allowing for interruptions from phones, families, and other staff members. Interruptions like these allow for misinterpretation and communication errors which could lead to a decrease in a patient’s outcome and safety. Through utilization of three different theoretical frameworks along with evaluation of several meta-analysis and research based articles, we evaluated the effectiveness of bedside handoff reporting. The evidence is in favor of bedside handoff reporting. Therefore, the hospital should …

Construction Of An Apartment Building And Parking Garage, Kirsten Wilson, Kirsten R. Wilson Oct 2021

Construction Of An Apartment Building And Parking Garage, Kirsten Wilson, Kirsten R. Wilson

Honors College Theses

Construction projects are known far and wide to all people. Buildings we need for daily survival would not exist if it were not for the construction industry. Our homes, healthcare facilities, groceries, and other necessary amenities would be gone if it were not for the structures they are housed in. This project aims to simulate the lifespan of a construction job from the design phase to the preconstruction phase and stops at the final presentation before an agreement to start construction.

To create the simulation for the students, a fake RFP, or request for proposal, was created and given to …

Intein Inhibitors As Novel Antimicrobials: Protein Splicing In Human Pathogens, Screening Methods, And Off-Target Considerations, Diana A. Wall, Chunyu Wang, Kenneth Mills, Christopher W. Lennon Oct 2021

Intein Inhibitors As Novel Antimicrobials: Protein Splicing In Human Pathogens, Screening Methods, And Off-Target Considerations, Diana A. Wall, Chunyu Wang, Kenneth Mills, Christopher W. Lennon

Faculty & Staff Research and Creative Activity

Protein splicing is a post-translational process by which an intervening polypeptide, or intein, catalyzes its own removal from the flanking polypeptides, or exteins, concomitant with extein ligation. Although inteins are highly abundant in the microbial world, including within several human pathogens, they are absent in the genomes of metazoans. As protein splicing is required to permit function of essential proteins within pathogens, inteins represent attractive antimicrobial targets. Here we review key proteins interrupted by inteins in pathogenic mycobacteria and fungi, exciting discoveries that provide proof of concept that intein activity can be inhibited and that this inhibition has an effect …

The Effect Of Ewom From Identity And Non-Identity Social Media On Movie Sales., Ismail Karabas, Nik Nikolov, Brittany Wood Oct 2021

The Effect Of Ewom From Identity And Non-Identity Social Media On Movie Sales., Ismail Karabas, Nik Nikolov, Brittany Wood

Faculty & Staff Research and Creative Activity

Social media platforms differ in the extent to which users reveal their identities, as well as users' ability to detect others' identities, both of which could lead to differential effects of social media generated word-of-mouth (eWOM) on actual consumer behavioral responses. Based on prior research on social identification, and relationship orientation of social networks in marketing, the authors examine whether eWOM on identity-focused (e.g., Facebook) and non-identity-focused (e.g., Youtube) platforms impact an objective consumer response variable: motion pictures box office sales. Using social media posts data for 58 randomly selected movie releases across all platforms during the period November 2014 …

Keleigh Mabry Art 399 Portfolio, Keleigh Mabry

Professional Practices (ART 399)

I have always wondered what it’s like in other people’s minds. Sonder - the realization that each random passerby is living a life as vivid and complex as your own. The comfort I find in realizing everyone’s lives are as terrible and beautiful as my own has been an inspiration for my artwork. I began journaling in 2019 and taking psychology courses my Sophomore year. I've learned that these things naturally go together for me.

Our beautiful and complex lives can also be laced with mental health issues. Depicting mental health in visually intriguing images drives my current body of …

Reactive Chlorine Species Reversibly Inhibit Dnab Protein Splicing In Mycobacteria, Christopher Lennon Dr, Daniel Wahl, J. R. Goetz, Joel Weinberger Ii Sep 2021

Reactive Chlorine Species Reversibly Inhibit Dnab Protein Splicing In Mycobacteria, Christopher Lennon Dr, Daniel Wahl, J. R. Goetz, Joel Weinberger Ii

Faculty & Staff Research and Creative Activity

Intervening proteins, or inteins, are mobile genetic elements that are translated within host polypeptides and removed at the protein level by splicing. In protein splicing, a self-mediated reaction removes the intein, leaving a peptide bond in place. While protein splicing can proceed in the absence of external cofactors, several examples of conditional protein splicing (CPS) have emerged. In CPS, the rate and accuracy of splicing are highly dependent on environmental conditions. Because the activity of the intein-containing host protein is compromised prior to splicing and inteins are highly abundant in the microbial world, CPS represents an emerging form of posttranslational …

Measuring Palatability As A Linear Combination Of Nutrient Levels In Food Items, Jeffrey S. Young Aug 2021

Measuring Palatability As A Linear Combination Of Nutrient Levels In Food Items, Jeffrey S. Young

Faculty & Staff Research and Creative Activity

It well known that palatability and nutritional quality of foods and/or diets are viewed as being in tension with one another. While there exist multiple measures of healthiness, there are no such measures for tastiness. This gap limits the degree to which researchers can investigate this tension and its implications for dietary behavior and hence public health and nutrition policy. The scope of future work concerning the dietary behavior of Americans would expand greatly if researchers better understood consumers’ willingness to eat certain foods, which matters as much as recommending those foods for them to eat in the first place. …

Monitoring Protein Splicing Using In-Gel Fluorescence Immediately Following Sds-Page, Joel Weinberger Ii, Christopher W. Lennon Aug 2021

Monitoring Protein Splicing Using In-Gel Fluorescence Immediately Following Sds-Page, Joel Weinberger Ii, Christopher W. Lennon

Faculty & Staff Research and Creative Activity

Inteins garner significant interest from both basic and applied researchers due to their unique catalytic abilities. Herein, we describe a protocol for accurately monitoring protein splicing without purification using in-gel fluorescence immediately following Tris-Glycine SDS-PAGE. Following expression in Escherichia coli, cells are lysed by sonication, cell supernatants are separated using Tris- Glycine SDS-PAGE, and superfolder GFP (sfGFP) fluorescence is directly visualized within gels. This method is rapid, with sfGFP immediately imaged following SDS-PAGE without staining. Further, sfGFP can be specifically detected in complex samples such as E. coli cell supernatants, proteins run at expected masses, and all steps can be …

Acceptance: A Research Overview And Application Of This Core Act Process In Aba, Dr. Michael Bordieri, Phd Aug 2021

Acceptance: A Research Overview And Application Of This Core Act Process In Aba, Dr. Michael Bordieri, Phd

Faculty & Staff Research and Creative Activity

Acceptance describes mediating behaviors in which an individual reduces escape and avoidance behaviors in response to unwanted private events while also encouraging increased appetitive control. Given the recent resurgence of interest in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy/Training (ACT) in ABA, a review of this core treatment process is warranted. Acceptance enjoys strong empirical support within the psychological and contextual behavioral science literatures, with treatment outcome studies, self-report measures research, and behavioral laboratory tasks all supporting the process. A review of select publications in behavior analytic journals found that acceptance also enjoys preliminary evidence of effectiveness across a variety of populations and …

A Comparison Of The Dermal Swab And Waterborne Methods For Measuring Corticosterone Levels In Amphibians For Use In Wetland Condition Assessments, Andrew W. Sisson, Andrea Darracq, J.B. Moon Aug 2021

A Comparison Of The Dermal Swab And Waterborne Methods For Measuring Corticosterone Levels In Amphibians For Use In Wetland Condition Assessments, Andrew W. Sisson, Andrea Darracq, J.B. Moon

Student Scholarship & Creative Works

Wetlands are some of the most biodiverse ecosystems in the world but

have been declining in condition across the United States for decades.

Methods such as the National Wetland Condition Assessment, which

focuses on foliage health, nutrient enrichment, chemical contamination,

and surrounding land usage, are used to catalog the condition of those

wetlands that remain. It is unknown if and how these current measures

of condition related to the physiological responses of the organisms that

inhabit these systems. Amphibians can serve as a model organism for

assessing the linkage between organismal health and wetland condition

due to their high species …

Exploring Donation And Purchase Intentions To Corporate Owned Vs. Corporate Sponsored Foundations, Amanda Swift, Ismail Karabas, Skyler King Aug 2021

Exploring Donation And Purchase Intentions To Corporate Owned Vs. Corporate Sponsored Foundations, Amanda Swift, Ismail Karabas, Skyler King

Faculty & Staff Research and Creative Activity

This study examines the donation intentions and purchase likelihood toward corporate-owned and corporate-sponsored foundations. A cross-sectional sample of Amazon’s MTurk respondents is obtained. Results of the experiment indicate that relative to foundations sponsored by a corporation, corporate foundations are perceived to be more trustworthy and have a greater perceived impact on a cause, which leads to higher purchase intentions. Additionally, donation intentions to foundations are higher among the corporate foundations because of perceived impact. Implications of these results are discussed from both practical and theoretical perspectives.

Effects Of Parenting By Lying In Childhood On Adult Lying, Internalizing Behaviors, And Relationship Quality, Bailey Dodd, Esther K. Malm Jul 2021

Effects Of Parenting By Lying In Childhood On Adult Lying, Internalizing Behaviors, And Relationship Quality, Bailey Dodd, Esther K. Malm

Faculty & Staff Research and Creative Activity

Parenting by lying is a phenomenon in which parents lie to their children, usually for a positive goal, and has been the subject of new parenting research. This study tested the associations between parenting by lying in childhood, lying to parents in young adulthood, and parent–child relationship quality. Secondly, we examined the mechanisms through which these constructs were all related to internalizing behaviors in young adulthood, specifically—stress, anxiety and depressive symptoms. Young adult participants between the ages of 18 and 24 (N = 206) responded to questions about parenting strategies experienced in childhood, their current adult functioning, lying to parents, …

Preservice Teachers' Attitudes And Knowledge Towards Assistive Technology: Exploring And In-Class Workshop Approach, Stacey Keown, Moriah Smothers, Tori Colson Jul 2021

Preservice Teachers' Attitudes And Knowledge Towards Assistive Technology: Exploring And In-Class Workshop Approach, Stacey Keown, Moriah Smothers, Tori Colson

Kentucky Teacher Education Journal: The Journal of the Teacher Education Division of the Kentucky Council for Exceptional Children

The Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act (2004) mandates that all students receiving special education services should be considered for assistive technology; therefore, it is imperative that teacher preparation programs prepare preservice teachers to select, implement, and evaluate assistive technology for their future students. This mixed-methods study explored the influence an in-class workshop had on preservice teachers’ feelings of preparedness to use assistive technology in their future classrooms. The participants were all enrolled in a 400-level special education methods course, and their perceptions were assessed by administering a pre- and post- survey. The workshop consisted of an independent online training …

The Experience Of Sex Guilt: The Roles Of Parenting, Adult Attachment, And Sociosexuality, Jana Michelle Hackathorn, Esther Malm Jul 2021

The Experience Of Sex Guilt: The Roles Of Parenting, Adult Attachment, And Sociosexuality, Jana Michelle Hackathorn, Esther Malm

Faculty & Staff Research and Creative Activity

Sociosexuality, comfort with sex outside the confines of a committed relationship, and parent–child dynamics have been associated with experiences of sex guilt. However, the mechanisms through which family dynamics are related to sociosexuality and sex guilt are still unclear. Using a developmental framework, in a cross-sectional study, we examined whether attachment styles and parent–child relationships would be associated with the development and maintenance of sociosexuality. We hypothesized that insecure attachment styles and sociosexuality would independently and positively mediate the relationship between parent–child relationship quality (accepting/rejecting) and sex guilt. Findings support past research and suggests that parental rejection predicts insecure attachments, …

An Examination Of Transformation Of Evaluative And Consequential Functions Through Derived Relations With Participant-Generated Values-Relevant Stimuli, Emily K. Sandoz, Michael J. Bordieri, Gina Q. Boullion, Ian Tyndall Jul 2021

An Examination Of Transformation Of Evaluative And Consequential Functions Through Derived Relations With Participant-Generated Values-Relevant Stimuli, Emily K. Sandoz, Michael J. Bordieri, Gina Q. Boullion, Ian Tyndall

Faculty & Staff Research and Creative Activity

Values-affirmation interventions have demonstrated efficacy in increasing approach behavior in the context of potential threat. In other words, writing about values seems associated with changes to the functions of previously aversive events. Evaluative conditioning and derived relational responding have been offered as possible mechanisms by which values interventions change behavior. The current study aimed to extend the extant literature by demonstrating derived relational responding and subsequent transformation of evaluative and consequential functions with values-relevant stimuli. Participants were 34 undergraduate students. Participants generated personally meaningful values-relevant stimuli after engaging in a values-affirmation task and were subsequently trained through matching to sample …
