The Value Of Advanced Degrees In Agricultural Communities, Classrooms, And Ffa Chapters Of Georgia Agriculture Education, James L. Hunter
The Value Of Advanced Degrees In Agricultural Communities, Classrooms, And Ffa Chapters Of Georgia Agriculture Education, James L. Hunter
Murray State Theses and Dissertations
The Smith-Hughes Act of 1917 established federal funding for vocational education in the United States, and school-based agriculture (SBAE) programs are a result of that act. SBAE teachers face the same challenges that other educators face. The attrition rate of SBAE teachers is in line with the national average of teachers in other content areas, and researchers have studied to try to ascertain why some teachers stay while others leave the profession. Many factors contribute to a teacher remaining within the education profession, while other factors lead to a teacher changing professions. The study examined the impact of advanced degrees …

Spatial Analysis Of American Chestnut (Castanea Dentata) Distribution And Ecology In Kentucky’S Federal Lands, Jacob Raymond Pease
Murray State Theses and Dissertations
Anthropogenic factors have been the cause of the decline of tree species across the globe. From unsustainable logging and development to disease and improper management, threats to forests have taken their toll. The American chestnut (Castanea dentata) was once an integral basal tree species in Appalachian forests, but chestnut blight drove the species to functional extinction by the mid-1900s. The recent creation of genetically modified chestnuts gives hope for future restoration of the species throughout its historical range. Despite blight resistance, effective restoration will require optimal site selection for finding and planting chestnuts, which will maximize limited resources. …

Assessing The Behavioral And Health Effects Of Turtle Racing On Eastern Box Turtles (Terrapene Carolina Carolina), Michelle Weaver
Murray State Theses and Dissertations
To make informed management decisions regarding box turtles (Terrapene spp.) and other turtle species, one must understand what influences them at multiple levels of biological organization. Common influences include the pet trade, urbanization, habitat degradation, and disease. One factor that has not been studied but could influence turtles at multiple levels of biological organization is turtle racing. It is common practice to use wild caught turtles at these events because there is a lack of regulation and enforcement. My study focused on evaluating the effects of turtle racing on eastern box turtles (Terrapene carolina carolina; hereafter EBTs) …

Military Spouses And Family Support: A Human Services Perspective, Hannah L. Prewitt
Integrated Studies
Abstract
Mental health problems among service members and veterans continue to be one of the many challenges that service members encounter. Clearly, the cultural, structural, and institutional barriers that exacerbate these concerns need to be urgently identified. Extensive interventions include resiliency training, policies assuring confidentiality, and awareness campaigns; however, stigma is a powerful reason why service members avoid mental health treatment. The paper reviews the development of military mental health awareness throughout history, the multidimensional construct of stigma, public, self, and structural forms, and the role of perceived career risk in modulating help-seeking behavior. Social identity theory and labeling theory …

A Personal Touch: Intergovernmental Organizations And The Mechanism For Mayor-To-Mayor Relationships, Matthew L. Howell
A Personal Touch: Intergovernmental Organizations And The Mechanism For Mayor-To-Mayor Relationships, Matthew L. Howell
Commonwealth Review of Political Science
Much of the research on intergovernmental cooperation starts with cities that are already in a relationship or are co-participants in an intergovernmental organization and then look at which relationships get developed into cooperative agreements. In this article, four potential methods by which local officials might form those precursor relations are tested. First, cities work within a network context where intergovernmental organizations might matter for several reasons. The intergovernmental organization might reflect similarity in the organizations, called homophily. Second and third, existing intergovernmental organizations may matter directly by serving as a social focus, or a Tertius Iungens. Finally, the professionalism of …
Factors Affecting State Budget Stabilization Fund Access, Jeremy Phillips, Lashonda Stewart
Factors Affecting State Budget Stabilization Fund Access, Jeremy Phillips, Lashonda Stewart
Commonwealth Review of Political Science
Since their inception in the 1980s and early 1990s, budget stabilization funds (BSFs) have been seen as a way to avoid recurring crises like those experienced by states after the 1980-1982 recession. In hindsight, we may wonder if other motivations were not at play. For example, states with tax expenditure limitation laws (TEL) were more likely to adopt BSFs with less stringent deposit and withdrawal requirements. Previous research has suggested that TELs may have motivated some states to adopt BSFs. Although our analysis does not provide evidence of collaboration with these earlier findings, it strongly suggests that there are several …

Glutamate Receptors At The Zebrafish Neuromuscular Junction, Trenton Randall
Glutamate Receptors At The Zebrafish Neuromuscular Junction, Trenton Randall
Honors College Theses
Glutamate is the main excitatory neurotransmitter in the CNS, but at the neuromuscular junction, that role is taken by acetylcholine. However, during embryonic development, non-cholinergic receptors, including those for glutamate, are also present at the NMJ, which are not maintained unless used. These receptors can still form functional circuits, as evidenced by a process called neurotransmitter respecification, in which a neuron changes which neurotransmitter it releases, and is accompanied by the upregulation of the corresponding receptor by the muscle. This process has been observed in frogs and in rats. We predict that zebrafish also exhibit this neurotransmitter plasticity. To assess …
