Greece And Harm Reduction Efficacy, Callie Wagers
Posters-at-the-Capitol
An overview of the significance of harm reduction strategies in public health, highlighting Greece's innovative approaches recognized by the Healthy Cities Award. Harm reduction encompasses a range of policies and programs designed to minimize the negative health and social impacts associated with substance use, emphasizing pragmatic and compassionate solutions rather than punitive measures. Greece's successful initiatives—such as syringe exchange programs, supervised consumption sites, and comprehensive addiction treatment services—serve as a model for addressing public health crises. Kentucky, facing significant challenges related to substance use disorders, can adopt and adapt Greece's harm reduction methods to enhance the well-being of its communities. …

Analyzing Whether Different Types Of Taste Nerve Fibers Have Different Innervation Patterns Through Proximity And Colocalization, Abdel-Rhman M. Al-Azzawi
Posters-at-the-Capitol
The taste system not only allows us to perceive and distinguish various flavors but also plays a vital role in detecting nutrients and avoiding toxins. However, the precise organization of the neurons that convey taste information to the brain remains largely unknown, making it a critical area of research This study aims to determine if different types of taste neurons (as determined by genetic expression) exhibit distinct innervation patterns. This was accomplished by analyzing their proximity and colocalization with different types of taste bud cells. Taste bud cell types include Type II cells, which detect sweet, bitter, and umami flavors, …

Post-Traumatic Stress Dissorder In Law Enforcement, Todd C. Dearmond
Integrated Studies
Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a condition that has been linked primarily to military personnel. However, first responders experience the same symptoms due to their extended exposure to traumatic events, the stress of the job, and having to make high-risk decisions daily. Symptoms of PTSD include reliving the event, hyper-arousal, and avoidance. These symptoms typically develop over a period of three months but can also take years to emerge after the traumatic event. The treatment and management of PTSD in first responders calls for a multifaceted approach because one treatment style does not fit all personnel. The effectiveness and management …

The Effects Of Parenting Styles On Childhood Memories And Resilience Building, Nathaniel Paredes
The Effects Of Parenting Styles On Childhood Memories And Resilience Building, Nathaniel Paredes
Murray State Theses and Dissertations
One of the most significant agents of shaping children early in life is their parental figures. There has been extant research into parenting styles and outcomes later in life. The current study sought to understand how parenting styles can influence the formation of positive and adverse childhood experiences (PCEs and ACEs), which in turn lead to the development of resilience later in life. It was expected that participants who reported higher levels of authoritative parenting would be significantly correlated with higher levels of positive childhood experiences, and lower levels of adverse childhood experiences. Secondly, authoritarian and permissive parenting would be …

Equine Hair Cortisol Concentration And The Effects Of Season, Storage Method, And Personality Traits, Savannah M. Rivers, Grace A. Robertson, Thomas Powell, Lydia O'Sullivan, Shea Porr
Murray State Theses and Dissertations
Stress exists everywhere, for survival, adaptation is necessary. These adaptations directly reflected the stresses the animal experienced and demonstrated the ability to cope. An animal that could not cope could not survive. Stressful experiences resulted in behavior patterns for each animal. Consistent behavior can be defined as personality [1]; therefore, stress could directly influence personality by changing behavior.
Stress research helped analyze and identify animal personality traits, especially horses. Human-horse pairings partially relied on personality traits and, when considered, often led to improvements in welfare [2]. There are various tools to assess personality, one being Equine Personality Assessment [3]. The …

Out Of The Circle: Exploring Religious Ostracism In Cyberball, Ralph D. Stewart Iii
Murray State Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to investigate the psychological effects of social ostracism in group settings, particularly in relation to social identity theory (Tajfel & Turner, 1979) and the need to belong (Baumeister & Leary, 1995). Collective self-esteem, hostility, and belonging were examined to see if they changed significantly with the implementation of ostracism through the Cyberball paradigm (Williams, 2000). The relationship between ostracism, hostility, and religious fundamentalism was also explored. Though insignificant results from subsequent analysis were obtained, these results suggest weaker ostracism effects for interpersonal measures rather than intrapersonal measures consistent with findings by Hartgerink et al. …
Understanding Bird Diversity: A Modeling Approach In An Urban And Wetland Ecosystem, Clay Bliznick
Understanding Bird Diversity: A Modeling Approach In An Urban And Wetland Ecosystem, Clay Bliznick
Murray State Theses and Dissertations
The global increase in anthropogenically-driven shifts of land cover has resulted in losses to many natural communities such as prairies and wetlands. These ecosystems take on artificially-derived characteristics such as croplands, buildings, and roads to the extent that they no longer resemble the areas they once were. This process often results in the loss of biodiversity, ecological integrity, and valuable ecosystem services in these environments. Attempts to restore the condition and function of these disturbed areas are often implemented, but due to the complexity of factors driving these restorations, there is often a lack of practical insight needed to optimize …

New Psychoactive Substances Detected In Wastewater Samples Collected Along The Interstate Highway Rest Areas In Kentucky, Durga Prasad Kodati
Murray State Theses and Dissertations
The rapid emergence and proliferation of new psychoactive substances (NPS) pose significant challenges to public health and law enforcement. The potential for abuse and toxicity of these substances, which are intended to mimic the effects of controlled drugs, has been raising concerns as these compounds are designed to evade being regulated. There are traditional methods of tracking NPS, such as seizures and forensic toxicology, but they are delayed and seldom effective because these substances continue to evolve rapidly. Wastewater-based epidemiology (WBE) has emerged as a promising tool for real-time surveillance of drug consumption. The primary objective of this research was …
Bridging Diversity And Discipline: Stakeholder Perceptions Of Dei And Technical Rigor In Agriculture Education, David A. Yarbrough
Bridging Diversity And Discipline: Stakeholder Perceptions Of Dei And Technical Rigor In Agriculture Education, David A. Yarbrough
Murray State Theses and Dissertations
School-based agricultural education (SBAE) serves as a foundational model for preparing students through classroom instruction, Supervised Agricultural Experiences (SAEs), and FFA involvement. This study examined the perceptions of Georgia high school agricultural educators regarding how diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives impact technical rigor and traditional agricultural knowledge within SBAE programs. Educators reported that DEI efforts did not compromise technical rigor, and traditional elements, such as SAE and FFA, remained central to program success. These findings suggest that inclusion and tradition can coexist, with DEI seen as a complement rather than a conflict with SBAE goals. The results provide valuable …
