Wendy's Story In J. M. Barrie's Peter Pan, Jessica Hedrick
Wendy's Story In J. M. Barrie's Peter Pan, Jessica Hedrick
Steeplechase: An ORCA Student Journal
Although known today as simply Peter Pan, J.M. Barrie’s classic children’s novel was originally titled Peter and Wendy. This paper explores the famous children’s story from Wendy Darling’s perspective, taking particular interest in the narrator’s contradictory stance on Wendy her agency in the original novelized text. Peter Pan may be the most well known of Barrie’s characters, but the novel’s story is Wendy’s. The relationship between a mother and her children forms the crux of the novel; without Wendy, without her relationship with her own mother and her desire to play grown-up, there is no story. Peter Pan …

Same Words, Different Impressions: How Accent Upstages Words In Communication, Alexandria Farris
Same Words, Different Impressions: How Accent Upstages Words In Communication, Alexandria Farris
Scholars Week
The current study investigated how different non-native accents of English are perceived. A person's accent can be used to take the place of the individual's race or any other marker used to make judgements (Shuck, 2006). Participants listened to a recording of one out of five non-American female speakers of English from Mexico, Russia, Germany, India, or China, or a female native speaker of American English; the participants heard either a formal or informal text and then evaluated the speaker on factors of competence, caring/goodwill, and trustworthiness. Demographic data on age, gender, languages spoken, extent travelled, and time lived in …

Abstract
We believe large wedding advertisers are creating a bias perception of cultural weddings and wedding parties. From preliminary research, we have found that large, international, wedding opinion leaders such as David’s Bridal and Tiffany and Company are setting a perceptive standard of same-ethnic couples within one wedding advertisement. Although they cover a wide range of ethnic backgrounds through traditional wedding scenes, they do not cross cultures within a single advertisement. Recently, there has been an increase of homosexual wedding advertisements, but all advertisements we have studied so far …
Framing The Talk: Scholarship As Conversation In The Health Sciences, Candace K. Vance
Framing The Talk: Scholarship As Conversation In The Health Sciences, Candace K. Vance
Faculty & Staff Research and Creative Activity
Scholarship as Conversation, one of the threshold concepts in ACRL’s Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education, is and always will be an important concept for students to understand. The idea behind this frame has traditionally been introduced to students across the disciplines in the context of citing sources correctly, giving scholarly attribution, and avoiding plagiarism. These tenets are repeated in English class lectures, library orientations, as well as many other classes requiring research and writing. The Scholarship as Conversation frame continues to reflect these tenets in the knowledge practices; however, the frame has much broader implications that are crucial …

GSP at Murray State University
Libraries have been the source of innovation throughout human history. People today do not understand the importance of libraries and the resources they can provide to a community or society. This causes libraries to not receive the appropriate funding to support both their programs and new literary materials. The inspiration for libraries of the future is derived from the trends that will attract the citizens of tomorrow. Libraries will be more involved in the community and provide the public with accessible technology. Our ideas to improve libraries will gain the public’s interest and keep the fire of knowledge alive. Some …

The Importance Of Intentional Language And Literacy Development In Early Childhood, Shannon M. Alsman
The Importance Of Intentional Language And Literacy Development In Early Childhood, Shannon M. Alsman
Integrated Studies
Abstract
Literacy and language development in early childhood has been shown to be closely correlated with future academic performance (Gullo, 2013). A strong foundation in literacy and language has the potential to affect all areas of educational growth (Copple & Bredekamp, 2009). Moreover, the role of the adult in facilitating the process of literacy and language development is highly critical for success (Heroman & Jones, 2010). Developmental theorists have variations in their views as to how children develop and learn, yet one common denominator exists with them all—the adult’s role in guiding children’s learning (Charlesworth, 2008). Researchers have compiled a …

Everyone has “issues”. However, those “issues” can range from a numerous of things: self, family, work, mental, physical, or emotional (i.e “daddy issues” or “mommy issues”). According to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, childhood exposure to trauma has been linked with alcohol dependence, suggesting that adverse childhood experiences contribute to this environmental risk.
For this paper, I plan to discuss child maltreatment and the effect it could or could not have on one throughout childhood, adolescence years, and adulthood. Also I’m addressing alcoholism, in which child maltreatment could possibly contribute a connection along with factors, such as …

Why Physical Education Should Be Mandatory In Schools(K-12), Jonathan Stark
Integrated Studies
Abstract
My paper is about physical activity being mandatory in schools. It is very important for students to start physical activity early in life. One reason for starting physical activity early is to get in a habit of working out to where it is a part of your lifestyle. Another reason is it helps you as a person to be healthy; mentally and physically. If you are healthy, you feel better about yourself. Physical activity is being less talked about more and more each day. It is one of the reasons why our country is number one for obesity rates.

Abstract
Status of Women in the Universal Church
This paper will be looking at the status of women from biblical times to their current position in the universal church. Throughout recorded history women have been considered the weaker sex. This concept is taken from biblical writings in the third chapter of 1 Peter “Likewise, ye husbands, dwell with them according to knowledge, giving honor unto the wife, as unto the weaker vessel, and as being heirs together of the grace of life; that your prayers be not hindered” (1 Peter 3:7,King James Bible (KJB)). Although the text says “honor” …

During the review it was found nonverbal communication makes an impact on the type of individuals in another’s life whether it is consciously or unconsciously done. It was discovered individuals leave a lasting impression with their audience and they do so with the type …

For my project, I am going to be talking about instructional technology. Before being in the program I was once an elementary education major and I thought that technology in the classroom had served a major role in today’s education. According to the Association for Educational Communications and Technology: “Instructional technology is the theory and practice of design, development, utilization, management, and evaluation of processes and resources for learning.” Instructional technology is important in today’s classroom because it gives students another way to learn and comprehend ideas in learning about different topics. If I decide to go back to elementary …

Abstract
Female participation in business leadership, throughout the world, has traditionally been significantly less than their male counterparts. Various factors have been mentioned to be the cause of this issue. These include gender biases in the workplace and in cultural obligations, familial responsibilities, access to education, lack of female mentors and role models in leadership roles, as well as obstacles in advancement and gaps in compensation. It has been shown that gender bias is a strong motivator for the lack of female presence in business overall, but significantly so for leadership roles. Based on the expectations in our culture as …

Research has shown that learning a foreign language at a younger age is actually easier for students, versus waiting until high school to introduce a foreign language. I will be addressing issues such as why schools wait until high school, the harm in waiting till high school, why this is a problem, oppositions of this topic, and more. Specifically, this paper will discuss …

Research validates the premise that a workplace environment built on Christian principles will not only succeed in the basic sense, but it can thrive. This paper is a comparative analysis of Biblical and non-Biblical perspectives …

Red Alert is an app using voice recogni3on so people can call for help. The app is similar to “Hey Siri” present in iPhones and the Cortana feature in Androids. When a person uses his or her first preset keyword, the phone’s voice recogniton software accesses the app, which starts an audio recording, and when the second keyword is used, the app alerts the police. The primary consumer for Red Alert is high school to middle-aged women, with a secondary focus on those who live in urban areas. The technology exists, so the only needed recourse is programming.
