When In Doubt, Go To The Library, Phyllis Albright
Integrated Studies
Abstract
This paper is about the history of the public library system from the establishment of the first free modern public library, and how the face of the public library system has changed dramatically over the years. What was once just a place to peruse book titles and pick up the latest new release, has turned into a safe, open space to hold meetings, workshops, arts and crafts activities, programs on many subjects, and even research your genealogy. It is a place where patrons can come to and find help with a wide variety of subjects.

Kentucky Public Charter Schools, Pamela Manning-Hamilton
Kentucky Public Charter Schools, Pamela Manning-Hamilton
Murray State Theses and Dissertations
Kentucky public charter school law was introduced in 2017, the purpose of the new innovative schools were to close the achievement gap among the education system within the state. Charter schools are new-age schools that have a smaller class size, use differentiated instructional strategies that integrate technology to promote engagement, which in turn increases student growth and success. Advantages of charter schools within other states include differentiated environment, culture, and performance. Disadvantages of charter schools involve taking resources from traditional schools, higher resource costs, and demands. The study was approached using a basic qualitative research method. The purpose of the …
Teacher Resilience, Kristen Whipple
Teacher Resilience, Kristen Whipple
Murray State Theses and Dissertations
Abstract
The main purpose of this quantitative research study was to explore the influences that impact teacher resilience. Seven factors that potentially protect teacher resilience were chosen: competency, self-efficacy, agency, relationships, organizational culture, altruism, and sense of humor. These factors were tested against years of service categories and self-perceived resilience scores to determine if relationships exist. A two-part online survey gathered demographic information, self-perceived resilience scores, and resilience factor data from American PreK-12 teachers. To answer the three guiding research questions, the statistical tests of multiple linear regression, Pearson’s r correlation coefficient, and chi-square test of independence were utilized. The …

Career Readiness Of Recent Graduates, Bobby Stewart
Career Readiness Of Recent Graduates, Bobby Stewart
Murray State Theses and Dissertations
Formal education in the United States starts at five or six years old. Once formal education begins, it guides children into their working life as an adult. P through 20’s (P-20) process of starting educational structure early in the life of a child and guiding the skill development for young adults is critical when considering the skill gap current employees are facing. Skill development is a cost to many organizations and there are many opportunities for skill development in K-12 or post-secondary education. Learning how to better prepare the next generation of workers will provide higher skilled workers. Organizations are …
Bottom-Up Effects Of Degradation Outweighs Stabilizing Potential Of Omnivores, Hannah Marie Moore
Bottom-Up Effects Of Degradation Outweighs Stabilizing Potential Of Omnivores, Hannah Marie Moore
Murray State Theses and Dissertations
Anthropogenic activities have led to degradation in streams throughout much of Western North America. In particular, cattle grazing has led to a loss of riparian vegetation resulting in higher water temperatures and an increase in nutrient runoff. The effects of degradation on food quality and quantity for aquatic consumers could have large implications for stream communities. Since omnivores feed at multiple trophic levels, they may be resilient to altered food webs, which may allow them to stabilize communities in degraded environments where resources have been reduced. To test the hypothesis that omnivores positively impact community stability in degraded conditions, I …

Murray State Theses and Dissertations
Abstract
According to the National Association for Gifted Children (2019) up to 10% of the population can benefit from receiving gifted services. Due to wide variability in definition, identification and services offered, the NAGC recognized that gifted students have been and continue to be overlooked (NAGC, 2019). Not only are gifted students under identified overall, the ratio of identified students who are Black, Latine, special education, and female was lower than the ratio in the population and occurred at a significantly lower rate than their white counterparts (Ecker-Lyster & Niileksela, 2017). The issue of underrepresentation within the gifted population has …

The Role Of Glis3 In Zebrafish Endocrine Development And Regeneration, Tasha Swenney
The Role Of Glis3 In Zebrafish Endocrine Development And Regeneration, Tasha Swenney
Murray State Theses and Dissertations
Maintenance of proper blood glucose homeostasis is governed by the endocrine cells of the pancreas. Dysregulation of blood glucose is characteristic of the disease, diabetes mellitus. Relatively little is known about the molecular mechanisms that underlie diabetes. The genes associated with more common forms of diabetes remain more enigmatic and likely have less direct roles in blood glucose homeostasis such as glucose sensing, insulin secretion, and β cell maintenance. GLIS3, a transcription factor involved in pancreatic development as well as the transcriptional regulation of insulin has been identified as a risk locus for type 1 and type 2 diabetes …

This quasi-experimental investigation compared the effect of ethics training embedded within a curriculum to formal ethics training on the ethics knowledge and self-reported comfort levels of first-year graduate students in speech-language pathology. Two equal, non-randomized groups of participants completed …
Finite Index Right-Angled Mock Artin Groups In Right-Angled Mock Reflection Groups, Zachary Marcum
Finite Index Right-Angled Mock Artin Groups In Right-Angled Mock Reflection Groups, Zachary Marcum
Murray State Theses and Dissertations
Associated to any graph Γ are several groups where their presentations are encoded by Γ. Two such groups are right-angled Coxeter groups and right-angled Artin groups. By introducing more structure to Γ, what we call "local involutions," the graph Γ becomes a right-angled mock reflection system and encodes the presentation of two more groups: right-angled mock reflection groups and right-angled mock Artin groups.
Here we show that every right-angled mock Artin group associated with an n-gon graph with local involutions is a finite index subgroup in some right-angled mock reflection group. We employ a strategy similar to the one Davis …

A Personalized Values Intervention To Increase Health Behaviors In College Students, Jessica M Criddle
A Personalized Values Intervention To Increase Health Behaviors In College Students, Jessica M Criddle
Murray State Theses and Dissertations
College students in the United States face unique health risks such as problematic alcohol use, poor nutrition, low sleep quality, and low rates of exercise. Research increasingly shows interventions utilizing individualized approaches lead to longer term pro-health behavior change. Values-centered Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is a useful framework to for development of personalized, effective interventions. One reason for this may be that impersonalized interventions and researcher-generated target behaviors common in other literatures may not hold the same evocative effect and connection to health behaviors for each or every participant. In ACT, valuing increases the probability of values-consistent behavior, such …
