Artist Statement

Katlyn Hall

January 20, 2019

Communicating through illustration and graphic design sums up most of my work. Using drawing as my main medium to concept ideas ranging from a story that needs to be told to a client’s desire to make their message in a design applicable to their audience. Storytelling is universal. I don’t consider myself a fine artist in the terms of communicating in the traditional sense through oil painting, sculpting, etc. (some expertise in those) Art is becoming more digitized and commercialized through the digital area. Styles in animation, graphic arts, and conceptual are moving …

Mental Illness In Young Adult Literature: A Classroom Approach, Claire Ghent May 2019

Mental Illness In Young Adult Literature: A Classroom Approach, Claire Ghent

Honors College Theses

As high school curriculum in the 21st century evolves, the need to increase exposure of diverse literature that reflects culture, gender, and ethnicity is growing. One crucial area often overlooked by educators, parents, and publishers is literature that provides attention to mental illness, in spite of the growing amount of adolescents who suffer from a mental illness. By increasing awareness of mental illness in the classrooms, teachers can reduce stigma and increase empathy in their students while still providing challenging and engaging literary interactions. One of the best vehicles to deliver mental illness and stigma education is young adult literature …

Scattered, Siany Riegger Apr 2019

Scattered, Siany Riegger

B.A./B.S. Practicum Group Exhibit (ART 499)

What viewers should be able to see in my artwork revolves around the concepts of the sublime and of nature in general. This is done by utilizing the theme of predator and prey relationships to portray the sublime. One side of this work involves the predator and prey relationships with animals, particularly birds. This is where I am inspired by wildlife, which makes me curious about the idea of nature presented in my work. By using the theme of “survival of the fittest” in my artwork, it can bridge the gap between horror and nature to create the sublime. For …

Scattered, Casey Johnson

B.A./B.S. Practicum Group Exhibit (ART 499)

My art comprises one unifying idea: the body. We are our bodies, and with these bodies we experience life, death, and countless emotions. With my drawings and other work I embrace these experiences and depict stark symbols relating to the body.

I explore traditional symbols of play—such as toys and games—as well as images tied to life and death. The body is more than just a thing that can live and die. With our bodies, we feel emotions and interact; with these ideas in mind, I compose pieces related to color and our capacity for connection and interaction. In this …

Women Of The War: Female Espionage Agents For The Confederacy, Sarah Stellhorn Apr 2019

Women Of The War: Female Espionage Agents For The Confederacy, Sarah Stellhorn

Steeplechase: An ORCA Student Journal

Although historians have frequently examined the role of women on the home front during the Civil War, women who contributed to the cause in more direct ways, such as espionage, are often neglected. An in-depth examination of specific females spying for the Confederacy, such as Rose O’Neal Greenhow and Belle Boyd, proves that their actions, both remarkable and uncharacteristic of women at the time, had a direct impact on the war. A vast network of spies and smugglers existed not only in the southern and border states but also throughout the North, even in Washington D.C. itself. This network was …

Wei's Kitchen, Wei Hu

B.F.A. Practicum Exhibition (ART 498)

使用的主要软件是Adobe Photoshop,Adobe Animate和Adobe After Effects。该视频侧重于中国传统食品。视频包括食材,香料以及如何烹饪中餐。我希望通过非传统的教学媒体,我会引起新人们学习中国烹饪的兴趣。

Chemical Free Edible Flowers, Elise Abbott

Scholars Week

Nature is equipped with all the right systems and services in order to be self sustaining. But in the global flower industry, growers are battling insect infestations like never before because of stricter import laws by the United States Department of Agriculture. In order to ensure the processing of their flowers, growers douse them in pesticides making them inedible and harmful to those who work with them. As edible flowers are making their way into the market on cakes and desserts, fresh salads, specialty spreads and much more it's imperative that they are grown in a sustainable and safe manner. …

Soil Responses To Various Farming Systems In Western Kentucky, Samantha Peterson Apr 2019

Soil Responses To Various Farming Systems In Western Kentucky, Samantha Peterson

Scholars Week

The interactions among the farming systems and the soil, water, biota, and atmosphere control the effects of cultivation on soil properties. Land conversion from forest or pasture ecosystems into crop fields altered soil properties due to the loss of soil organic matter (SOM) and the increase of soil compaction. However in Kentucky, the magnitude of the changes varied among the soil properties. Therefore, the objective of this research was to investigate the changes of selected soil properties include SOM, soil pH, and compaction under different crop fields such as corn-soybean-tobacco rotation (Field #1), continuous corn field (Field #2), hemp field …

The Piping Plover Problem: A Review Of Management Issues For A Threatened Shorebird, Andrew Lydeard, Gerry Harris Apr 2019

The Piping Plover Problem: A Review Of Management Issues For A Threatened Shorebird, Andrew Lydeard, Gerry Harris

Scholars Week

Andrew Lydeard and Gerry Harris

The Piping Plover (Charadrius melodus) was federally listed in 1986. Since listing, Piping Plovers have been a focus of conservation and management efforts, particularly on their breeding grounds in the Northern Great Plains, Great Lakes, and northern Atlantic Coast. Despite management efforts that have resulted in range-wide population growth of the Piping Plover, growth in individual populations is often slow and reasons for this are poorly understood. A bias towards understanding drivers of declines on breeding sites compared to wintering and migratory stopover sites may be an underlying cause of this lack of …

Purpose – This paper aims to examine consumers’ opinions and behavioral intentions toward foods labeled as containing genetically modified (GM) (transgenic) ingredients across plant and animal-based categories. In light of marketplace changes (i.e. labeling requirements), we explore behavioral measures based on labeling options.

Design/methodology/approach – Three studies, one online projective survey using a convenience sample of consumers and two experiments conducted with Amazon mTurk adult US participants, are included.

Findings – Consumers have negative associations with GM products vs non-GM and are more likely to purchase unlabeled GM products. GM products may offer positive economic, societal and environmental benefits. However, …

Chemical Regulations And The Effect On Manufacturers, Dustin Smith Jan 2019

Chemical Regulations And The Effect On Manufacturers, Dustin Smith

Integrated Studies

This paper examines two major regulatory systems chemists and chemical manufacturers must deal with on a day-to-day basis. There are dozens of different sets of regulations that affect the chemical industry throughout the world. Many countries have their own specific rules that govern the chemicals manufactured or imported inside their borders. Specifically, this paper will examine the rise of the European Union’s REACH system, the failure and reform of the United States’ TSCA and finally, the effects these two systems have upon each other.

Why Do Serial Killers Kill, Candace Gillette Jan 2019

Why Do Serial Killers Kill, Candace Gillette

Integrated Studies

This study seeks to identify and understand the possible motives of serial killers. The study suggests that serial killers kill because of the impact of exposure to physical abuse, drug abuse, and alcoholism from an early age. Brain injury and mental disorders also play a significant role. Serial killers come from all walks of life and are usually abused in childhood by their parents or someone close to them. They typically show signs early on that they have issues, but those signs often go unnoticed because their families are either ashamed, don’t have the knowledge or resources, or for some …

An Overview Of The Drug Epidemic In The United States With A Focus On Opioids, Cocaine, And Marijuana, Gregg Lincoln

Integrated Studies

The prescription drug epidemic and illegal drug crisis has been at a steady incline for the last few decades. The United States have recently seen a rapid increase in overdose deaths, E.R. visits, and reports of misuse of prescription opioids and drug abuse (Meyer, Patel, Rattana, Quock, & Mody, 2014, p. 380). Part of the problem stems from doctors that write prescriptions for any ache or pain without thought for the potential addiction and destruction that it can cause if not used responsibly (Malinowski, 2018, p. 1032). As of 2016, at least 174 people die every day in the U.S. …

Prescription Drug Abuse In America, Je'vonte Hughes

Integrated Studies

Prescription drug abuse in America is responsible for over 70,000 deaths a year in the U.S. in 2017 and 2018. This issue is the result of Americans misusing prescribed drugs and medicine for personal use and illegal distribution. If started as a teenager prescription drug abuse can become an uphill battle for their later years. This study tackles the issues that are causing these numbers and found that there is a relationship between drug dealers and doctors who write illegal prescriptions and how Americans are getting their hands on these medications. This study also found that depression, lack of work/low …

Rural Social Work And Environmental Justice, Pamela C. Twiss Jan 2019

Rural Social Work And Environmental Justice, Pamela C. Twiss

Contemporary Rural Social Work Journal

While social work education and literature includes a growing body of work focused on environmental justice and the role of social work in addressing environmental injustices, limited attention has been paid to the disproportionate impact of these issues in rural areas. Many rural places can be more accurately described as rural-industrial in character. They produce the world’s food through highly mechanized agro-businesses, its timber, and much of its fossil fuels through large mining and drilling operations, each presenting threats to the surrounding environment and local peoples. This work describes environmental issues and injustices common to select large-scale rural industries, discusses …

A People So Different From Themselves: British Attitudes Towards India And The Power Dynamics Of The East India Company, Eric Gray

Murray State Theses and Dissertations

Gray, Eric, A People So Different from Themselves: British Attitudes Towards India and the Power Dynamics of the East India Company. Master of Arts (History), April, 2019, Murray State University, Murray, Kentucky.

Today, many characteristics of the nineteenth- and twentieth-century British Raj are well ingrained in the public consciousness, particularly Victorian Era Britons’ general disdain for numerous aspects of the many cultures found on the Indian Subcontinent. Moreover, while many characteristics of the preceding East India Company’s rule in India were no less exploitative of Indian peoples, evidence shows a much different relationship between British and Indian cultures during the …

Very Superstitious: The Relationship Between Desperation And Superstitious Behavior, Christopher Evan Hannan Jan 2019

Very Superstitious: The Relationship Between Desperation And Superstitious Behavior, Christopher Evan Hannan

Murray State Theses and Dissertations

Superstitious behavior has been found to emerge during situations of uncertainty and often used by those who desire control. Desperation, a negative emotion that motivates behavior, tends to also occur in uncontrollable environments. This study attempts to analyze the possible relationship between desperation and the use of superstitious behavior in circumstances that leave individuals with little to no control. This was achieved by simulating an uncertain environment through a computerized card game involving chance (i.e. War). Results from this study demonstrated that those who felt desperate due to uncertainty engaged in superstitious behaviors, and desperation was a greater predictor for …

Relate, Shelby Horton Dec 2018

Relate, Shelby Horton

B.F.A. Practicum Exhibition (ART 498)

Humans have a tendency to be self-absorbed; because of that we’ve evolved our ability to communicate to one another, in many different ways, more advanced than any other animal on the planet. Humans always express themselves to one another through the emotions they feel in a certain situation. One form of communication that seems universal for humans is the way we react emotionally to each other. Through the processes of printmaking, etching and lithography, I am expressing a certain situation I may experience myself but also connecting my own experience with others; making my viewers feel relatable and connected with …

Graphic, Xinyi Liu

Professional Practices (ART 399)

When I was young, I was attracted by Animate and Comics, started drawing childish colorful lines on blanket paper. I can easily draw those cartoon characters vividly, which has plant an art seed deeply inside of my heart. As I get older, I was being trained in school to draw much more professional ways. I work hard to invest in as many kinds of media as I can, but still focus on graphic design and digital drawing, especially for video games and movies, which brought me to art area.

I want to do concept design mostly in the future, like …
