Copyright, Fair Use, And Creative Commons: An Active-Learning Exercise For Studio Art Students, Arthur J. Boston

Faculty & Staff Research and Creative Activity

This article describes an active-learning exercise intended to help teach copyright, fair use, and Creative Commons licenses. In the exercise students use a worksheet to draw original pictures, create derivative pictures on tracing paper, select Creative Commons licenses, and explore commercial usage, fair use, and copyright infringement. Librarian-instructors may find the completed worksheets to be useful aids to supplement copyright lectures; student perspectives will be integral because they are generating the examples used in discussion. Although a scholarly communication librarian developed this exercise to help introduce some basic copyright information to an undergraduate studio art and design class, the exercise …

A Progressive Addiction Recovery Approach, Sara Meuth Jan 2020

A Progressive Addiction Recovery Approach, Sara Meuth

Integrated Studies

Abstract

Addiction is a complex chronic disease that plagues our society today. Understanding addiction requires a deep understanding of the relationship between the brain, mind, body, soul and others; in turn, its solution requires the same. Current research has made much progress and replaced the previous biomedical model for health and well-being with a biopsychosocial model. This same multi-dimensional approach is beginning to be applied to addiction recovery; however, there is much opportunity for progressive treatments to incorporate new components into current intervention models. Although there have been some studies to research the effects of the psychological component to recovery, …

Human Impact On Global Extinction, Ashley Carter Jan 2020

Human Impact On Global Extinction, Ashley Carter

Integrated Studies

For this project, I wanted to look at how heavily humans are impacting the current rate of global extinction. Many scientists and experts believe that Earth is either on the brink of experiencing a sixth mass extinction or that is it already occurring. The rate of extinction is argued to be happening at a much faster rate than during the Earth’s five previous mass extinctions which were before the evolution of humans. This project explores the different ways that humans are impacting global extinction, between a significant contribution to global warming, poaching, deforestation, and other factors. There is a limited …

Is Intermittent Fasting The Missing Element To Proper Health?, Joseph Harris

Integrated Studies

Food is more accessible than ever, yet it is ultra-processed and loaded with many chemicals and preservatives. Most foods today are not made to be healthy, just to taste good, and it is making people sick. This research paper will look at the ancient practice of fasting and the health benefits associated with it. There have been numerous theories on how to lose weight and how to live a healthful life, but most people who try to follow these ideals do not succeed at them. Why is obesity becoming a rapidly growing epidemic? Is there a link between obesity and …

Mental Health Advocacy: Building An Interdisciplinary Program For Agriculture Professionals, Abby E. Blankenship, Erica E. Nason, Olivia Hayes, Sebastian Bliss Jan 2020

Mental Health Advocacy: Building An Interdisciplinary Program For Agriculture Professionals, Abby E. Blankenship, Erica E. Nason, Olivia Hayes, Sebastian Bliss

Contemporary Rural Social Work Journal

The suicide rate among agriculturalists is 3.5 times higher than the general population. A number of external factors related to the farming and veterinary work put individuals in agricultural populations at risk for poor mental health outcomes, including economic variables (e.g. tariffs, market prices), environmental factors affecting yield (e.g. drought, pests), and exposure to difficult or traumatic life events (e.g., mistreatment of animals, loss of crop). Rural values including self-reliance, work orientation, and individualism combined with logistical and systemic barriers to competent behavioral health care further increase risk. Project GROW (Generating Resilience in Our Workforce) is a multifaceted full semester …

Stinky Water And Other Ills: Environmental Justice For Rural Services, Michael R. Daley Jan 2020

Stinky Water And Other Ills: Environmental Justice For Rural Services, Michael R. Daley

Contemporary Rural Social Work Journal

Environmental justice concerns affect rural communities and the people who are members of them. Social workers’ long-standing involvement in improving living conditions of the people and communities with whom they work make environmental justice an important responsibility. Yet there is a rural-urban divide on topics related to the environment, and rural and urban communities tend to establish different environmental priorities. Rural communities tend to prioritize local conditions and solutions over global and societal ones. Rural people distrust national policies especially those established by governmental as not being responsive to their interest. Some common environmental rural problems are identified. Environmental justice …

Incorporation Of Hempseed In The Broiler Chicken Diet, Mallorie Alexzandra Snider

Murray State Theses and Dissertations

Hempseed has become a popular supplement alternative due to the confounding nutritional benefits it possesses; however, the legality of hempseed, and other hemp products, prevents the use in animal feeds. Particularly, broiler chickens that grow fairly quickly in a short amount of time. Evaluation of hempseed in the broiler chicken diet is needed to conclude if it is a possible replacement for other broiler nutrient sources, such as soybean meal (SBM). Thus, the objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of hempseed (HS) on the growth, feed conversion and carcass yield of broilers. This study consisted of 48 …

Effects Of The Asian Clam, Corbicula Fluminea, On Native Freshwater Mussels And Biofilms, Kiersten Youngquist Jan 2020

Effects Of The Asian Clam, Corbicula Fluminea, On Native Freshwater Mussels And Biofilms, Kiersten Youngquist

Murray State Theses and Dissertations

As native, freshwater mussels continue to decline in the United States, successful conservation and management plans are essential for their survival. Understanding the drivers of native mussel declines, how the ecological roles mussels play within aquatic systems may be affected by declines, and the conservation status of our mussel fauna in different watersheds is critical to inform management and conservation efforts. The Asian clam (Corbicula fluminea, Müller, 1774) is an invasive species found throughout the United States that can reach densities of greater than 1000/m². Given these high densities, Asian clams have been linked to declines in native mussels …

Professional Practices (ART 399)

Love is everywhere, we see it all the time. It is something that I myself have even become obsessed with. Showing love through a surreal childlike eye with a twist of tongue-in-cheek, I desire to evoke the sense of complication through maximalism. My generation really inspires their endless influx of media; how Instagram profiles have turned into perfectly planned out color schemes, with set saturations and grain levels. I make work about millennials, the love within us. Exploring how we portray ourselves on social media, and the fantasy of how we portray this curated life, combined with pop culture is …

Professional Practices Portfolio, Sarah Cox

Professional Practices (ART 399)

As human beings, we want to look away from something that makes us uncomfortable, but we can be enthralled by it. I am currently creating work about the idea of restriction and confinement, specifically addressing body image. There is an underlying theme of the attraction-repulsion concept. Confronting audiences with less than desirable imagery creates a tension between my work and viewers. Creating that relationship fuels my work and allows me to cross uncomfortable boundaries and discuss our bodies in a contemporary way.

I use charcoal and graphite to create work, occasionally with a limited but vivid color palette with soft …

El Laberinto De Regreso Al Pasado Hacia El Futuro: La Influencia De Borges En Beltenebros De Muñoz Molina, Tanya Romero-González Dec 2019

El Laberinto De Regreso Al Pasado Hacia El Futuro: La Influencia De Borges En Beltenebros De Muñoz Molina, Tanya Romero-González

Faculty & Staff Research and Creative Activity

The present article explores the connections between Antonio Muñoz Molina's Beltenebros (1989) and Jorge Luis Borges' work. Specifically, I explore how the reappearance of the past is depicted in Muñoz Molina's novel as compared to Borges' short stories "La muerte y la brújula" and "El sur", and how these connections are embedded in wider critical discourse about memory, history and their postmodernist reinterpretations. While other critics have pointed to the connection between these two authors, my comparative analysis reveals the depth of the so-called Borges effect. Firstly, the doubling of characters and the interconnections among them suggest the necessity of …

Evidence Of Variable Climate And Resources During The Late Pleistocene And Holocene At Gona, Ethiopia, Marie White Nov 2019

Evidence Of Variable Climate And Resources During The Late Pleistocene And Holocene At Gona, Ethiopia, Marie White

Steeplechase: An ORCA Student Journal

The African Humid Period (AHP) spanned a period of approximately 15 to 5 thousand years ago (ka) and resulted in Northern and Eastern Africa being wetter than today. This climate change event impacted flora, fauna, and humans to an unknown extent. Much of the work on the AHP across Eastern Africa utilizes lacustrine and marine proxies rather than river-based (fluvial). Gona, located in the Afar region of Ethiopia, is known for its extensive archaeological and fossil records in fluvial deposits. However, the paleoenvironment of the AHP at Gona has not been investigated. This study uses stratigraphy, geochronology, and paleopedology to …

Hemp As A Livestock Feedstuff: A Review Of Current Literature, Sarah Mead, Alyx Shultz Oct 2019

Hemp As A Livestock Feedstuff: A Review Of Current Literature, Sarah Mead, Alyx Shultz

Posters-at-the-Capitol

Hemp was removed from the list of controlled substances in the 2018 Farm Bill, making regulated hemp production legal in the United States. Kentucky agriculturalists and entrepreneurs are at the cutting edge of the United States hemp production and processing industries. Hemp production generally falls into one of three categories: grain, fiber, or floral (CBD extraction). Each production category also produces byproducts; one such byproduct is meal. In order to make hemp oil and fiber processing viable, markets for the remaining meal must be found. The high fiber, fat, and protein of hemp meal make it a potential feedstuff for …

Cannibidiol (Cbd) Supplementation In Horses: A Pilot Study, Kiara Jones, Evan Thomas, Shea Porr Oct 2019

Cannibidiol (Cbd) Supplementation In Horses: A Pilot Study, Kiara Jones, Evan Thomas, Shea Porr

Posters-at-the-Capitol

Cannibidiol (CBD) is sold for various uses in humans and animals. Thus far, CBD has not demonstrated effects similar to delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the psychoactive component of marijuana. While some animal species have demonstrated responses to CBD supplementation, published literature on equines is absent. The lack of FDA approval and studies to support claimed benefits make regulating product quality and recommending dosages difficult. The objectives of this project were to: 1) determine dosages that allowed for CBD detection in equine blood; and 2) evaluate time required for the appearance of maximum concentration and half-life of CBD in equine blood. Two …
