Enhanced Second Harmonic Generation In A Plasmonic Particle-In-Cavity Nanoantenna, Xiaoyan Y.Z. Xiong, Li (Lijun) Jun Jiang, Wei E.I. Sha, Yat Hei Lo
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Plasmonic nanostructures that support surface plasmon resonances potentially provide a route for the development of nanoengineered nonlinear optical media. A strong enhancement of second harmonic generation (SHG) in a particle-in-cavity nanoantenna (PIC-NA) is proposed and theoretically demonstrated in this work. The fundamental and second harmonic responses of the PIC-NA are calculated using a self-consistent boundary element method. Through a comparison with the linear field enhancement spectra, the SHG from PIC-NA is boosted by the strongly enhanced fundamental and SH fields arising from the cascaded focusing of large optical energy into the small gap. The proposed 3D plasmonic PIC-NA functions as …

A Novel Coordinate Transformation Based Self-Coupling Computation Approach For The Method Of Moments, Li Li, Lijun Jiang, Sheng Sun, Thomas F. Eibert, Weng Cho Chew
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
A new highly accurate and efficient coordinate transformation algorithm is proposed for the evaluation of the self-coupling in the Method of Moments (MoM), which produces usually the strongest contributions to the MoM system matrices. The new algorithm provides an effective solution to remove the singularity due to the Green's function inside the self-couplings. Moreover, the new solution reduces the integral dimension from 4-D to 1-D. Thus, better accuracy and efficiency are obtained for the self-coupling integrals.

A Patch-Resonator-Based Butler Matrix With New Triangular Phase Shifters, Xianshi Jing, Li (Lijun) Jun Jiang, Sheng Sun, Lei Zhu
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
In this paper, a new novel patch based Butler Matrix using 3-dB square-patch coupler and triangular-patch wideband phase shifter is presented. By inserting a via hole along the symmetrical plane of the triangular patch, the bandwidth of the transmitting response is significantly increased. In order to obtain a 45° phase difference and a wideband phase response, a reference line with high characteristic impedance is applied and the length of the feeding line for the triangular-patch structure is adjusted correspondingly. As an application, a patch-based Butler Matrix is designed and fabricated around 4 GHz. The measured patch-based Butler Matrix shows a …

Besides amplitude, phase and polarization, wave-front is also an important property of electromagnetic waves. EM waves with helical wavefront carrying orbital angular momentum (OAM) attract more attentions recently for its promising applications in communications. The OAM generation for microwaves was rarely reported. And existing designs are usually very complicated and suffer low efficiency problems. We propose composite PEC (perfect electric conductor)-PMC (perfect magnetic conductor) metasurfaces to convert the LCP (RCP) plane wave with zero OAM to the RCP (LCP) helical EM wave with desired OAM at microwave regime. The conversion efficiency can nearly reach 100%.

Chiral structures are composed of periodically arranged asymmetric particles. The asymmetry of chiral particles results in extraordinary properties like negative refraction index, giant optical activity and circular dichroism. Consequently, they have applications in super lens and various polarization controllers. There are two types of chiral structures, namely planar and 3D structures. The planar ones usually have three- or fourfold rotational symmetry, which limits the polarization tuning capability. On the other hand, the 3D prototypes are difficult to fabricate and measure. Here, we propose a highly tunable sub-wavelength 3D chiral structure. It can be conveniently manufactured on the single-layer double-side printed …

A New Multiple Access Wiretap Channel Model, Mohamed Nafea, Aylin Yener
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
A new model for the two-user multiple-access wiretap channel is considered. In this model, the legitimate (main) channel is a discrete memoryless channel (DMC), and the wiretapper chooses a fixed-length subset of the channel uses where she has perfect access to the transmitted symbols of both users, while observing the remainder of the transmitted codewords through a second DMC. As such, it generalizes the existing multiple-access wiretap channel models and extends the recently proposed new wiretap channel model to a multiple access setting. An achievable strong secrecy rate region for the model is derived. The achievability is established by solving …

The arsenic (As) to selenium (Se) ratio in AsxSe1-x glasses ranging from x = 0.2 to 0.5 was varied in order to examine the effect of chemical and topological ordering on the glass' thermal transport behavior. The fundamental thermal properties of glass transition temperature (Tg), thermal conductivity (k), and heat capacity (cp) were experimentally measured using differential scanning calorimetry, transient plane source method, and ultrasonic testing. Based on topological constraint theory, inflections in Tg and k were found at the structural coordination number «r» of 2.4, whereas a slight increase in heat …

We consider the accuracy improvement of the high frequency scattered fields from the 3-D convex scatter by the Fock current and the incremental length diffraction coefficient (ILDC) technique. We propose the numerical contour deformation method to calculate the Fock currents, and treat them in the scatterer's lit and shadow regions, separately. Then, by adopting the ILDC technique, high frequency scattered fields are clearly formulated in the lit, shadow and transition regions of the 3-D convex scatter, respectively. Compared to the PO scattered field from the 3-D convex sphere, numerical results demonstrate the significant accuracy enhancement of the scattered field via …

Rifampicin monooxygenase (RIFMO) catalyzes the N-hydroxylation of the natural product antibiotic rifampicin (RIF) to 2′-N-hydroxy-4-oxo-rifampicin, a metabolite with much lower antimicrobial activity. RIFMO shares moderate sequence similarity with well characterized flavoprotein monooxygenases, but the protein has not been isolated and characterized at the molecular level. Herein, we report crystal structures of RIFMO from Nocardia farcinica, the determination of the oligomeric state in solution with small angle x-ray scattering, and the spectrophotometric characterization of substrate binding. The structure identifies RIFMO as a class A flavoprotein monooxygenase and is similar in fold and quaternary structure to MtmOIV and OxyS, which are enzymes …

Schottky barrier radiation detectors were fabricated on 12 μm n-type 4H-SiC epitaxial layers grown on a 4° off-axis highly doped 4H-SiC substrate (0001). Schottky barrier junction properties were characterized through current-voltage (I-V) and capacitance-voltage (C-V) measurements. A diode ideality factor of 1.29 and Schottky barrier height of 1.10 eV were determined from the forward I-V characteristics using a thermionic emission model. A built-in potential of 1.91 V and effective carrier concentration of 1.03 x 1015 cm-3 was calculated from a Mott-Schottky plot of the C-V measurements. Radiation detector performance was evaluated by alpha pulse height spectroscopy (PHS) in …

Direct Strength Prediction Of Cold-Formed Steel Beam-Columns, American Iron And Steel Institute
American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) Specifications, Standards, Manuals and Research Reports (1946 - present)
The Direct Strength Method (DSM) of cold-formed steel member design employs local, distortional, and global cross-section elastic buckling analysis with empirically derived “direct” expressions to predict member strength. DSM is an accepted design method in national design specifications (e.g., AISI-S100-16) and enables a unified, robust, and flexible design approach. However, for beam-columns DSM in current design specifications employs simplified linear interaction expressions based on combining the isolated axial and bending elastic buckling and strength response. Today, local, distortional, and global elastic buckling under any combination of axial load and bending moments may be found using elastic buckling analysis tools such …

The purpose of the panel is to raise the common questions about diversity and multiculturalism training in library schools, and engage the audience in a meaningful discussion about diversity and multiculturalism. We will discuss the importance of diversity and multiculturalism training in library and information science curricula by examining multiple countries/regions as case studies. We would be seeking answers to two major questions: "What do responsible library science educators need to do to educate librarians on diversity/multiculturalism/internationalism?" and "How can we educate future librarians so that they will have a greater perspective on diversity and multiculturalism?".

The behaviors of tip displacement, maximum stress, and natural frequency of vibration as a function of blade length are investigated for extendable wind turbine blades. A three-dimensional linear elasticity finite-element model of the blade is used along with a typical profile and representative material properties. The quasi-linear response and free vibration behavior are investigated for a sequence of blade geometries. These estimates are intended to give approximate measures of expected changes in the elastic and dynamic field as the operating length changes and provide preliminary guidelines for this novel class of structure.

Runtime noise management systems typically rely on on-chip noise sensors to accurately capture voltage emergencies. As such, the threshold voltage for noise sensors to report emergencies serves as a critical tuning knob between the system failure rate and false alarms. Unfortunately, the problem of optimal threshold voltage computation remains open in literature despite its importance. The problem is further complicated by process variations, which introduce significant variations in load currents and thus in noise across different chips. A uniform noise margin may not work optimally for all the chips. In this paper, we first formulate the problem of minimizing the …

In recent decades, "post-WIMP" interactions have revolutionized user interfaces (UIs) and led to improved user experiences. However, accounts of post-WIMP UIs typically do not provide theoretical explanations of why these UIs lead to superior performance. In this article, we use Norman's 1986 model of interaction to describe how post-WIMP UIs enhance users' mental representations of UI and task. In addition, we present an empirical study of three UIs; in the study, participants completed a standard three-dimensional object manipulation task. We found that the post-WIMP UI condition led to enhancements of mental representation of UI and task. We conclude that the …

This paper presents updated estimates of source parameters for GW150914, a binary black-hole coalescence event detected by the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory (LIGO) in 2015 [Abbott et al. Phys. Rev. Lett. 116, 061102 (2016).]. Abbott et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 116, 241102 (2016).] presented parameter estimation of the source using a 13-dimensional, phenomenological precessing-spin model (precessing IMRPhenom) and an 11-dimensional nonprecessing effective-one body (EOB) model calibrated to numerical-relativity simulations, which forces spin alignment (nonprecessing EOBNR). Here, we present new results that include a 15-dimensional precessing-spin waveform model (precessing EOBNR) developed within the EOB formalism. We find good agreement …

A novel mechanism of rifampicin (Rif) resistance has recently been reported in Nocardia farcinica. This new mechanism involves the activity of rifampicin monooxygenase (RifMO), a flavin-dependent monooxygenase that catalyzes the hydroxylation of Rif, which is the first step in the degradation pathway. Recombinant RifMO was overexpressed and purified for biochemical analysis. Kinetic characterization revealed that Rif binding is necessary for effective FAD reduction. RifMO exhibits only a 3-fold coenzyme preference for NADPH over NADH. RifMO catalyzes the incorporation of a single oxygen atom forming an unstable intermediate that eventually is converted to 20-N-hydroxy-4-oxo-Rif. Stable C4a-hydroperoxyflavin was not detected by rapid …

The first observational run of the Advanced LIGO detectors, from September 12, 2015 to January 19, 2016, saw the first detections of gravitational waves from binary black hole mergers. In this paper, we present full results from a search for binary black hole merger signals with total masses up to 100M⊙ and detailed implications from our observations of these systems. Our search, based on general-relativistic models of gravitational-wave signals from binary black hole systems, unambiguously identified two signals, GW150914 and GW151226, with a significance of greater than 5σ over the observing period. It also identified a third possible signal, …

We investigate the zero-temperature superfluid to insulator transitions in a diluted two-dimensional quantum rotor model with particle-hole symmetry. We map the Hamiltonian onto a classical (2+1)-dimensional XY model with columnar disorder which we analyze by means of large-scale Monte Carlo simulations. For dilutions below the lattice percolation threshold, the system undergoes a generic superfluid-Mott glass transition. In contrast to other quantum phase transitions in disordered systems, its critical behavior is of conventional power-law type with universal (dilution-independent) critical exponents z=1.52(3), ν =1.16(5), ß/ν =0.48(2), γ/ν=2.52(4), and η = -0.52(4). These values agree with and improve upon earlier Monte Carlo results …
