Among recent advances toward efficient semiconducting materials, rational design guidelines have emerged focusing on the synergy between various intermolecular interactions to improve the solid-state order of π-conjugated molecules in organic electronic devices. Herein, we focus our attention on halogen bonding (XB) interactions and the crucial role of electron withdrawing substituents (e.g., nitro and fluoro) toward influencing solid-state properties via secondary interactions. Employing iodoethynyl benzene derivatives (F2BAI and (NO2)2BAI) and thiophene/furan-based building blocks equipped with pyridyl groups as self-assembling domains (PyrTF and PyrT2), co-crystals driven by XB, and π-stacking interactions were formed and studied. Spectroscopic and thermal analysis of 1:1 mixture …

A study of the right-hand side effect for an iterative solver is presented. The right-hand side determines whether a mode can be excited under certain excitation. Based on the matrix equation system Ā · x = b, different formulations are discussed including the electric field integral equation (EFIE), Calderón preconditioned EFIE with electro-quasi-static problems, and the magnetic integral equation (MFIE) with magneto-quasi-static problems. Detailed spectral analysis shows the importance of the weighted right-hand side effect in both the convergence and accuracy of iterative system.

Cerebroretinal vasculopathy, hereditary vascular retinopathy, and hereditary endotheliopathy, retinopathy, nephropathy and stroke are neurovascular syndromes initially described as distinct entities. Recently they were shown to be one disease caused by C-terminal frame-shift mutations in TREX1, which was termed ‘retinal vasculopathy with cerebral leukodystrophy’. Here we defined the genetic and clinicopathologic spectrum of this clinically and pathophysiologically poorly characterized and frequently misdiagnosed fatal neurovascular disorder. We identified five different TREX1 mutations in 78 members from 11 unrelated families and by using a standardized study protocol we retrospectively reviewed and aggregated the associated clinical, neuroimaging, and pathology data. Findings were similar across …

Genetic Algorithm Optimization Of Sos Meta-Architecture Attributes For Fuzzy Rule Based Assessments, Andrew Renault, Cihan H. Dagli
Engineering Management and Systems Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
The analysis of an acknowledged systems of systems (SoS) meta-architecture requires a preliminary method for potential trade space exploration to ensure compliance to evolving capability requirements. It is important to assess the SoS meta-architecture concept to ensure that it satisfies all stakeholder needs and requirements in the early stages of development. There are numerous linguistic terms called key performance attributes (KPAs) that could be used to assess the different aspects of the architectures capabilities, however, too many KPAs could complicate the assessment. The initial population of suitable KPAs is reduced through non-derivative based optimization employed by a genetic algorithm (GA) …

We consider an abstract hyperbolic equation with a Lipschitz continuous operator, where the main operator is self-adjoint and positive definite and represents a sum of two similar operators. For this equation, we construct a decomposition scheme of high order of accuracy. This scheme is based on rational splitting of cosine-operator function.

We present results from a search for gravitational-wave bursts coincident with two core-collapse supernovae observed optically in 2007 and 2011. We employ data from the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory (LIGO), the Virgo gravitational-wave observatory, and the GEO 600 gravitational-wave observatory. The targeted core-collapse supernovae were selected on the basis of (1) proximity (within approximately 15 Mpc), (2) tightness of observational constraints on the time of core collapse that defines the gravitational-wave search window, and (3) coincident operation of at least two interferometers at the time of core collapse. We find no plausible gravitational-wave candidates. We present the probability of detecting …

We report results of a deep all-sky search for periodic gravitational waves from isolated neutron stars in data from the S6 LIGO science run. The search was possible thanks to the computing power provided by the volunteers of the Einstein@Home distributed computing project. We find no significant signal candidate and set the most stringent upper limits to date on the amplitude of gravitational wave signals from the target population. At the frequency of best strain sensitivity, between 170.5 and 171 Hz we set a 90% confidence upper limit of 5.5 x 10-25, while at the high end of …

A System of Systems (SoS) architecting problem requires creating a selection of systems in order to provide a set of capabilities. SoS architecting finds many applications in military/defense projects. In this paper, we study a multi-objective SoS architecting problem, where the cost of the architecture is minimized while its performance is maximized. The cost of the architecture is the summation of the costs of the systems to be included in the SoS. Similarly, the performance of the architecture is defined as the sum of the performance of the capabilities, where the performance of a capability is the sum of the …

Entity resolution is an important application in field of data cleaning. Standard approaches like deterministic methods and probabilistic methods are generally used for this purpose. Many new approaches using single layer perceptron, crowdsourcing etc. are developed to improve the efficiency and also to reduce the time of entity resolution. The approaches used for this purpose also depend on the type of dataset, labeled or unlabeled. This paper presents a new method for labeled data which uses single layered convolutional neural network to perform entity resolution. It also describes how crowdsourcing can be used with the output of the convolutional neural …

Evaluating Forecasting Methods By Considering Different Accuracy Measures, Nijat Mehdiyev, David Lee Enke, Peter Fettke, Peter Loos
Engineering Management and Systems Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Choosing the appropriate forecasting technique to employ is a challenging issue and requires a comprehensive analysis of empirical results. Recent research findings reveal that the performance evaluation of forecasting models depends on the accuracy measures adopted. Some methods indicate superior performance when error based metrics are used, while others perform better when precision values are adopted as accuracy measures. As scholars tend to use a smaller subset of accuracy metrics to assess the performance of forecasting models, there is a need for a concept of multiple accuracy dimensions to assure the robustness of evaluation. Therefore, the main purpose of this …

A System of Systems architecting problem aims to determine a selection of systems, which are capable of providing a set of desired capabilities. A SoS architect usually has multiple objectives in generating efficient architectures such as minimization of the total cost and maximization the overall performance of the SoS. This study formulates a biobjective SoS architecting problem with these two objectives. Here, we consider that, by allocating funds to the systems, the SoS architect can improve the performance of the capabilities the systems can provide. The resulting architecting problem is a biobjective mixed-integer linear programming model. Specifically, the system selection …

This paper highlights and validates the use of shape analysis using Mathematical Morphology tools as a means to develop meaningful clustering of historical data. Furthermore, through clustering more appropriate grouping can be accomplished that can result in the better parameterization or estimation of models. This results in more effective prediction model development. Hence, in an effort to highlight this within the research herein, a Back-Propagation Neural Network is used to validate the classification achieved through the employment of MM tools. Specifically, the Granulometric Size Distribution (GSD) is used to achieve clustering of daily traffic flow patterns based solely on their …

Using Neural Networks To Forecast Volatility For An Asset Allocation Strategy Based On The Target Volatility, Youngmin Kim, David Lee Enke
Engineering Management and Systems Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
The objective of this study is to use artificial neural networks for volatility forecasting to enhance the ability of an asset allocation strategy based on the target volatility. The target volatility level is achieved by dynamically allocating between a risky asset and a risk-free cash position. However, a challenge to data-driven approaches is the limited availability of data since periods of high volatility, such as during financial crises, are relatively rare. To resolve this issue, we apply a stability-oriented approach to compare data for the current period to a past set of data for a period of low volatility, providing …

To investigate the mechanisms for the initiation and early-stage evolution of the nonvolcanic southernmost segments of the East African Rift System (EARS), we installed and operated 35 broadband seismic stations across the Malawi and Luangwa rift zones over a 2 year period from mid-2012 to mid-2014. Stacking of over 1900 high-quality receiver functions provides the first regional-scale image of the 410 and 660 km seismic discontinuities bounding the mantle transition zone (MTZ) within the vicinity of the rift zones. When a 1-D standard Earth model is used for time-depth conversion, a normal MTZ thickness of 250 km is found beneath …

Numerous investigations of the mature segments of the East African rift system (EARS) have significantly improved our understanding of the structure and processes associated with well-developed continental rifts. In contrast, knowledge of rifting processes at their early stage is still significantly limited. Here we present results from a teleseismic P-wave tomography investigation of the incipient Okavango rift zone (ORZ), which is located at the southwestern terminus of the EARS. P-wave relative travel-time residuals recorded by 17 recently deployed portable seismic stations were manually picked and inverted for three-dimensional upper-mantle and mantle transition-zone tomographic images beneath the ORZ and its adjacent …

A make to order business has to produce the products that are customized to the customer's current need. The customization can be realized by assembling different standard parts with various 'configurations'. The oil field service industry is a typical example where most products produced are cylindrical assemblies made up of standard parts customized in their size, material specifications, coating specifications, and threading suited for the particular load rating and environment. As business cycles go up and down, hiring and firing of personnel is the routine of the day. Thus, it is very hard to keep experienced inspectors due to high …

A transient gravitational-wave signal, GW150914, was identified in the twin Advanced LIGO detectors on 2015 September 2015 at 09:50:45 UTC. To assess the implications of this discovery, the detectors remained in operation with unchanged configurations over a period of 39 days around the time of the signal. At the detection statistic threshold corresponding to that observed for GW150914, our search of the 16 days of simultaneous two-detector observational data is estimated to have a false-alarm rate (FAR) of < 4.9 x 10-6 yr-1, yielding a p-value for GW150914 of < 2 x 10-7. Due to the mirror symmetry breaking, chiral structures show fantastic electromagnetic (EM) properties involving negative refraction, giant optical activity, circular dichroism and asymmetric transmission. Aligned electric and magnetic dipoles excited in chiral structures contribute to the extraordinary properties. However, the chiral structures that exhibit n -fold rotational symmetry show a limited tunability of the chirality. In this paper, we propose a compact, light, and highly tunable anisotropic chiral structure to overcome this limitation and realize a linear-to-circular polarization conversion. The anisotropy is due to simultaneous excitations of two different pairs of aligned electric and magnetic dipoles. The 3-D omega-shaped structure, …

Three different architectures of 3D carbon fiber woven composites (orthogonal, ORT; layer-to-layer, LTL; angle interlock, AI) were tested in quasi-static uniaxial tension. Mechanical tests (tensile in on-axis of warp and weft directions as well as 45° off-axis) were carried out with the aim to study the loading direction sensitivity of these 3D woven composites. The z-binder architecture (the through-thickness reinforcement) has an effect on void content, directional fiber volume fraction, mechanical properties (on-axis and off-axis), failure mechanisms, energy absorption and fiber rotation angle in off-axis tested specimens. Out of all the examined architectures, 3D orthogonal woven composites (ORT) demonstrated a …

A water-soluble borate glass substrate serves as the structural platform on which thin film device is built. The glass substrate completely dissolves in a saline solution in approximately 40 h. Intentional failure of the spiral device (RLC resonator circuit) as a result of rapid structural disintegration by dissolution is demonstrated in DC, AC, and RF ranges that agrees well with simulation. Adopting water-soluble glass elements is expected to be a viable approach to develop reliable all-inorganic biodegradable devices that are fully functional during an intended operational …

Stochastic Galerkin Methods For Transient Maxwell's Equations With Random Geometries, Yongtao Cheng, Li (Lijun) Jun Jiang
Stochastic Galerkin Methods For Transient Maxwell's Equations With Random Geometries, Yongtao Cheng, Li (Lijun) Jun Jiang
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
The generalized polynomial chaos expansion was broadly introduced to model systems with uncertain inputs, including random material properties and random computational geometries. This paper focuses solving electromagnetic field when the geometry contains multi-randomness. A linear transformation always maps spatial random variables into grids with fixed length. Hence a great advantage of the method is that the numerical mesh is not changed despite geometrical variations. We applied efficient stochastic Galerkin methods to time-domain Maxwell's equations when thicknesses of two-layer media are uncertain. High-order Runge-Kutta discontinuous Galerkin methods were performed on the resulting system of the expansion coefficients.

A thorough study on the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulation of the Maxwell-Schrödinger system in the semi-classical regime is given. For the Maxwell part which is treated classically, an alternative approach directly using the vector and scalar potentials (A and Φ) is taken. This approach is stable in the long wavelength regime and removes the need to extract the potentials at every time step. Perfectly matched layer (PML) is developed for this system. For the Schrödinger and quantum mechanical part, minimal coupling is applied to couple the charges to the electromagnetic potentials. Simulation results agree with the theory of quantum coherent …

Characteristic Analysis For Optical Antennas: A Generalized Equivalent Circuit Model For Nanoparticles, Ying S. Cao, Li (Lijun) Jun Jiang
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Optical antennas, which are considered for many potential applications, are antennas which work at optical frequencies. At this frequency range, the materials, such as Al, Ag, Au and so on, formerly treated as perfect electric conductor (PEC), now have dispersive and complex permittivity, which complicates most of the methodologies. In this paper, a generalized equivalent circuit model is developed for nanoantennas not only to deal with the dispersivity of permittivity, but also to provide more physical insight. Several examples are used to benchmark the method.
