Identifying Design Parameters Controlling Damage Behaviors Of Continuous Fiber-Reinforced Thermoplastic Composites Using Micromechanics As A Virtual Testing Tool, Ditho Pulungan, Gilles Lubineau, Arief Yudhanto, Recep Yaldiz, Warden Schijve

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this paper, we propose a micromechanical approach to predict damage mechanisms and their interactions in glass fibers/polypropylene thermoplastic composites. First, a representative volume element (RVE) of such materials was rigorously determined using a geometrical two-point probability function and the eigenvalue stabilization of homogenized elastic tensor obtained by Hill–Mandel kinematic homogenization. Next, the 3D finite element models of the RVE were developed accordingly. The fibers were modeled with an isotropic linear elastic material. The matrix was modeled with an isotropic linear elastic, rate-independent hyperbolic Drucker–Prager plasticity coupled with a ductile damage model that is able to show pressure dependency of …

Triply Differential Measurements Of Single Ionization Of Argon By 1-Kev Positron And Electron Impact, J. Gavin, O. G. De Lucio, Robert D. Dubois Jun 2017

Triply Differential Measurements Of Single Ionization Of Argon By 1-Kev Positron And Electron Impact, J. Gavin, O. G. De Lucio, Robert D. Dubois

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

By establishing coincidences between target ions and scattered projectiles, and coincidences between target ions, scattered projectiles, and ejected electrons, triply differential cross-section (TDCS) information was generated in terms of projectile energy loss and scattering angles for interactions between 1-keV positrons and electrons and Ar atoms. The conversion of the raw experimental information to the TDCS is discussed. The single-ionization TDCS exhibits two distinguishable regions (lobes) where binary and recoil interactions can be described by two peaks. A comparison of the positron and electron impact data shows that the relative intensity of both binary and recoil interactions decreases exponentially as a …

Hypoelliptic Multiscale Langevin Diffusions: Large Deviations, Invariant Measures And Small Mass Asymptotics, Wenqing Hu, Konstantinos Spiliopoulosï Jun 2017

Hypoelliptic Multiscale Langevin Diffusions: Large Deviations, Invariant Measures And Small Mass Asymptotics, Wenqing Hu, Konstantinos Spiliopoulosï

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We consider a general class of hypoelliptic Langevin diffusions and study two related questions. The first question is large deviations for hypoelliptic multiscale diffusions as the noise and the scale separation parameter go to zero. The second question is small mass asymptotics of (a) the invariant measure corresponding to the hypoelliptic Langevin operator and of (b) related hypoelliptic Poisson equations. The invariant measure corresponding to the hypoelliptic problem and appropriate hypoelliptic Poisson equations enter the large deviations rate function due to the multiscale effects. Based on the small mass asymptotics we derive that the large deviations behavior of the multiscale …

Reducing Costs While Maintaining Learning Outcomes Using Blended, Flipped, And Mastery Pedagogy To Teach Introduction To Environmental Engineering, Daniel B. Oerther Jun 2017

Reducing Costs While Maintaining Learning Outcomes Using Blended, Flipped, And Mastery Pedagogy To Teach Introduction To Environmental Engineering, Daniel B. Oerther

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

As part of a cost-savings initiative, an existing course of 'introduction to environmental engineering' offered using a 'traditional' format of didactic class meetings supplemented with hands-on laboratory sessions, was changed significantly. The 'modified' format uses 'blended', 'flipped', and 'mastery' approaches to teach "2601: Fundamentals of Environmental Engineering" to approximately 60 sophomores pursuing baccalaureate degrees in environmental, civil, or architectural engineering, each semester. This paper presents a summary of the results from eight course offerings over a period of four years to more than 450 total students. Assessments included student grades; open-ended invitations for anonymous feedback at the end of each …

In Vivo Effects Of Long-Term Cigarette Smoke Exposure On Mammary Tissue In Mice, Shannon Kispert, Susan Crawford, Grant Kolar, Jane Mchowat

Biological Sciences Faculty Research & Creative Works

Cigarette smoking is the leading cause of preventable death worldwide and has been linked to the development and progression of cancer. Many cohort studies have described the link between patients with breast cancer and those with long-term smoking history. Despite the claim of correlation, the mechanism by which cigarette smoke alters normal breast epithelial cells and stroma and contributes to tumor cell growth remains undefined. To investigate whether cigarette smoke promotes ductal epithelial cell hyperplasia by stimulating stromal endothelial cell proliferation, we exposed mice to cigarette smoke for 6 months. We observed epithelial proliferation, increased fibrosis, increased vascularity, and mast …

Review: “Jeffrey Geiger And Karin Littau (Eds.): Cinematicity In Media History”, Andrew Behrendt Jun 2017

Review: “Jeffrey Geiger And Karin Littau (Eds.): Cinematicity In Media History”, Andrew Behrendt

History and Political Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Let the appearance of jargon in this book’s title deter no one: Cinematicity in Media History is an inviting, interdisciplinary collection of essays on the question of what it has meant to interact with moving images in the modern era. The volume mounts a welcome opposition to the teleological pitfalls of what W. Russell Neuman has termed the “heroic” and “systemic” models of media history, whereby valiant geniuses produce revolutionary inventions and each new media format/device is destined to give way to the next and disappear dutifully into obsolescence (Neuman 2010: 6–11). The essays in Cinematicity strike a collective blow …

Responsiveness Of Mining Community Acceptance Model To Key Parameter Changes, Mark Kofi Boateng, Kwame Awuah-Offei Jun 2017

Responsiveness Of Mining Community Acceptance Model To Key Parameter Changes, Mark Kofi Boateng, Kwame Awuah-Offei

Mining Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The mining industry has difficulties predicting changes in the level of community acceptance of its projects over time. These changes are due to changes in the society and individual perceptions around these mines as a result of the mines' environmental and social impacts. Agent-based modeling can be used to facilitate better understanding of how community acceptance changes with changing mine environmental impacts. This work investigates the sensitivity of an agent-based model (ABM) for predicting changes in community acceptance of a mining project due to information diffusion to key input parameters. Specifically, this study investigates the responsiveness of the ABM to …

Corrosion Map For Metal Pipes In Coastal Louisiana, Sanjay Tewari Jun 2017

Corrosion Map For Metal Pipes In Coastal Louisiana, Sanjay Tewari

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Transportation agencies often allow metal pipes as an option for cross drains under/along roads and highways. Metal culverts can corrode over time at various rates based on their environmental conditions (e.g., corrosive nature of coastal soils, high water table, and saltwater intrusion).

This project was focused on applying available soil data, such as spatial distribution of soil types and soil characteristics (e.g., pH and conductivity), towards creating a Geographic Information System (GIS) based map to identify corrosion zones in coastal Louisiana. The effect of the soil characteristics (pH and conductivity) was incorporated in to the published corrosion models for calculating …

Raman Spectral Variation For Human Fingernails Of Postmenopausal Women Is Dependent On Fracture Risk And Osteoporosis Status, J. R. Beattie, M. C. Caraher, N. M. Cummins, O. M. O'Driscoll, R. Eastell, S. H. Ralston, Mark R. Towler Jun 2017

Raman Spectral Variation For Human Fingernails Of Postmenopausal Women Is Dependent On Fracture Risk And Osteoporosis Status, J. R. Beattie, M. C. Caraher, N. M. Cummins, O. M. O'Driscoll, R. Eastell, S. H. Ralston, Mark R. Towler

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Patients diagnosed with osteoporosis have reported loss of fingernail resilience as the disease progresses. Keratin is the predominant protein in human nail tissue, and its structure has been postulated to be different in fingernails clipped from subjects who have sustained fragility fractures and those who have not, which may offer a window into the donor's bone health. This study was designed to qualify these differences, which may lead to the development of a novel screening tool for fracture risk. Raman spectroscopy was used to measure the fingernails of 633 postmenopausal women who presented at six fracture clinics located across the …

Quantum Griffiths Phase Inside The Ferromagnetic Phase Of Ni₁₋ₓvₓ, Ruize Wang, Adane Gebretsadik, Sara Ubaid-Kassis, Almut Schroeder, Thomas Vojta, For Full List Of Authors, See Publisher's Website.

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We study by means of bulk and local probes the d-metal alloy Ni1-xVx close to the quantum critical concentration, xc ≈ 11.6%, where the ferromagnetic transition temperature vanishes. The magnetization-field curve in the ferromagnetic phase takes an anomalous power-law form with a nonuniversal exponent that is strongly x dependent and mirrors the behavior in the paramagnetic phase. Muon spin rotation experiments demonstrate inhomogeneous magnetic order and indicate the presence of dynamic fluctuating magnetic clusters. These results provide strong evidence for a quantum Griffiths phase on the ferromagnetic side of the quantum phase transition.

We present high signal-to-noise galaxy-galaxy lensing measurements of the Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey constant mass (CMASS) sample using 250 deg2 of weak-lensing data from Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope Lensing Survey and Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope Stripe 82 Survey. We compare this signal with predictions from mock catalogues trained to match observables including the stellar mass function and the projected and twodimensional clustering of CMASS. We show that the clustering of CMASS, together with standard models of the galaxy-halo connection, robustly predicts a lensing signal that is 20-40 per cent larger than observed. Detailed tests show that our results are robust to a variety …

Surface-Modified Polyacrylonitrile Nanofibres As Supports, Chris Ademola Bode-Aluko, Omoniyi Pereao, Olanrewaju Fatoba, Leslie Petrik

Mining Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Polyacrylonitrile nanofibers (PAN-nfs) are one of the most studied nanofibers because of their excellent characteristics, such as good mechanical strength, chemical resistance, and good thermal stability. Due to the easy dissolution in polar organic solvents, PAN-nfs are mostly produced via electrospinning technique. The electro spun PAN-nfs surfaces are relatively in-active and hydrophobic, and, therefore, hinder some potential applications; however, chemical surface modification reactions, such as amination, reduction, hydrolysis, and amidoximation, have been carried out on them. These reactions bring about functional groups, such as amine, hydroxyl, carboxylic, imine etc., to the surface PAN-nfs and invariably make their surfaces active and …

Transient Thermal Analysis Of 3-D Integrated Circuits Packages By The Dgtd Method, Ping Li, Yilin Dong, Min Tang, Junfa Mao, Li (Lijun) Jun Jiang, Hakan Bagci

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Since accurate thermal analysis plays a critical role in the thermal design and management of the 3-D system-level integration, in this paper, a discontinuous Galerkin time-domain (DGTD) algorithm is proposed to achieve this purpose. Such as the parabolic partial differential equation (PDE), the transient thermal equation cannot be directly solved by the DGTD method. To address this issue, the heat flux, as an auxiliary variable, is introduced to reduce the Laplace operator to a divergence operator. The resulting PDE is hyperbolic, which can be further written into a conservative form. By properly choosing the definition of the numerical flux used …

Heteromer Nanostars By Spontaneous Self-Assembly, Caitlin Brocker, Hannah Kim, Daniel Smith, Sutapa Barua

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Heteromer star-shaped nanoparticles have the potential to carry out therapeutic agents, improve intracellular uptake, and safely release drugs after prolonged periods of residence at the diseased site. A one-step seed mediation process was employed using polylactide-co-glycolic acid (PLGA), polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), silver nitrate, and tetrakis(hydroxymethyl)phosphonium chloride (THPC). Mixing these reagents followed by UV irradiation successfully produced heteromer nanostars containing a number of arm chains attached to a single core with a high yield. The release of THPC from heteromer nanostars was tested for its potential use for breast cancer treatment. The nanostars present a unique geometrical design exhibiting a significant …

The Upper Mississippi Embayment (UME), where the seismically active New Madrid Seismic Zone resides, experienced two phases of subsidence commencing in the Late Precambrian and Cretaceous, respectively. To provide new constraints on models proposed for the mechanisms responsible for the subsidence, we computed and stacked P-to-S receiver functions recorded by 49 USArray and other seismic stations located in the UME and the adjacent Ozark Uplift and modeled Bouguer gravity anomaly data. The inferred thickness, density, and Vp/Vs of the upper and lower crustal layers suggest that the UME is characterized by a mafic and high-density upper crustal …

Energy-Efficient Multi-Core Scheduling For Real-Time Dag Tasks, Zhishan Guo, Ashikahmed Bhuiyan, Abusayeed Saifullah, Nan Guan, Haoyi Xiong

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this work, we study energy-aware real-time scheduling of a set of sporadic Directed Acyclic Graph (DAG) tasks with implicit deadlines. While meeting all real-time constraints, we try to identify the best task allocation and execution pattern such that the average power consumption of the whole platform is minimized. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first work that addresses the power consumption issue in scheduling multiple DAG tasks on multi-cores and allows intra-task processor sharing. We first adapt the decomposition-based framework for federated scheduling and propose an energy-sub-optimal scheduler. Then we derive an approximation algorithm to identify …
